NFL Random Thought of the Day

Do you ever see a point where someone can clear the concussion protocol, but they have had so many the NFL forces a medical retirement? I'm sure this would have to be negotiated in the CBA.
Again not a CBA thing, but a team doctor/team thing.

At some point, NFL’s doctors and/or teams may keep Tua Tagovailoa off the field

A narrative has emerged in the aftermath of Tua Tagovailoa‘s latest placement in the concussion protocol. It goes like this: “Tua should not play again this year.”

That makes little sense. If/when he’s cleared to return to play this season, why shouldn’t he? Certain concerns regarding optics could prompt the Dolphins to not use him despite being cleared (like they did against the Vikings in October), but if he’s cleared, he’s cleared.

The more relevant question isn’t whether he shouldn’t play again this year, but whether he shouldn’t play again, ever. The issue has apparently emerged among the player’s family; NBC’s Cris Collinsworth explained during a Steelers-Dolphins game earlier this year that, when Tua was asked whether his parents are OK with him continuing to play, Tua said, “I don’t know.”

Although Tua won’t want to walk away, he may be facing greater family pressure to stop. And, at some point, he may find himself unable to get any doctor to clear him to play, similar to former NFL running back Jahvid Best. The physics aren’t on Tua’s side; he’s smaller than most quarterbacks, and he has shown an inability to date to protect himself against hits that cause his head to strike the ground.

The broader question is whether Tua’s concussion history will become a scarlet letter, prompting the Dolphins to move on from him and other teams to shun him. With so many quarterbacks never having concussion issues, a player who has several of them runs the risk of becoming the latest victim of unspoken collusion, where 32 supposedly independent businesses make business decisions aimed at advancing their collective best interests.

Right or wrong, the people who truly run the league surely realize that it’s not good for business to have periodic controversies regarding one player’s propensity to suffer concussions. And so the broader football machine, made up of interchangeable parts that are regularly changed out, would potentially reject Tua in order to get past this question of whether and when and if he’ll have yet another concussion.

Despite the league’s general belief that there’s no such thing as bad publicity, constant concussion discussion is bad for everybody. It gets parents to start thinking about not letting their kids play football. Which threatens to choke off the supply of future pro football players.

So, for the NFL, the best outcome could be for Tua’s parents to get him to stop playing. If he doesn’t make that decision on his own, the NFL’s doctors and/or the NFL’s teams may eventually make it for him.

Derek Carr about to be benched in Vegas. A prelude to cutting him this off-season.

Would not be surprised to see many of the bad contracts the Raiders have get traded. Adams, Waller, Chandler Jones. This team is about to go into a massive tank job. I can't believe McDaniels and Zeigler get to keep their jobs after the ridiculous moves they made last off-season. When will the league learn to stop hiring from the Belichick tree?

Add the Raiders to the teams that may want to trade up to that 1 spot in order to add Young,

Mike McDaniel confirms Tua Tagovailoa has a concussion, won’t say if he can play Sunday
Posted by Michael David Smith on December 28, 2022, 11:44 AM EST

Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has been diagnosed with a concussion and his status for Sunday’s game against the Patriots is uncertain, coach Mike McDaniel said today.

The Dolphins had previously said Tagovailoa was placed in the concussion protocol, although that doesn’t always mean a player was actually diagnosed with a concussion. Today McDaniel confirmed the diagnosis.

McDaniel said the Dolphins will prioritize Tagovailoa’s health first and foremost and that the medical professionals will make the call about whether he is capable of playing.

This is the second time Tagovailoa has been formally diagnosed with a concussion this season, following the scary incident on Thursday night of Week Four when he was knocked unconscious on the field. There is also a belief among many NFL observers that Tagovailoa had suffered another concussion just four days before that Week Four game.

Given Tagovailoa’s history, it seems hard to believe the right thing for his health would be to put him back on the field on Sunday against the Patriots. It seems likely that Teddy Bridgewater will start for the Dolphins on Sunday.

Here is a thought on the Patriot way -

Last year Carr looked better than this year. Now getting benched for a back up QB from the Patriots.

How many times have we seen a Patriots assistant try to install the Patriots system and not be able to find a QB that can run run it?

Then look at San Fran with Garrapolo and then Brock Purdy. Seattle with Wilson then Geno Smith.

And as we all know - look at the Texans the years OB couldn’t find a QB…

Dr. Allen Sills cops out on this last concussion, saying that Tua showed no signs of concussion during the game...............he doesn't bother to explain that after an obvious severe hit to the head even without immediate observation of overt signs of concussion, it is not unusual that the diagnosis is made by the standard concussion tests that were never performed.

I read an article earlier today that stated he did not have a concussion questionsmart I'll try to find it. This is just nuts!

Edit: After refresh, I saw your latest post of Dr Sills. That is one i read earlier.

Things got ugly

As I mentioned in another post....Raiders will release Carr before his contract becomes guaranteed. No GM will bail the Raiders out by trading for him either. He's going to be an UFA, that can sign with any team of his choice.

Funny, how they're beginning to talk up a Tom Brady reunion with Josh McDaniels. That works if the Raiders draft his replacement in 2023.

Will Adams be traded too? He said he signed with the Raiders because of Carr.

It was because McDaniels got a bigger, better deal from the Raiders. Mark Davis is a dream owner compared to Cal.

Lol.

I know it’s the hip thing to do to make fun of Cal and since Cal inherited the team there is plenty to criticize.

However to say Mark Davis is a dream owner compared to Cal is over the top. This is the guy who gave Gruden a ridiculous contract. And now is falling for the “Patriot Way” song and dance.

Looking at the body of work Davis has completed he is nothing to call a “dream owner”. Maybe to people like Gruden or McDaniels who can talk an owner in to stupid things make Davis a dream owner. But they haven’t accomplished anything since Davis inherited the team except for moving to Vegas.

In fact there are more similarities between Davis running the team with his mom and Cal running the team with his mom that give me concerns.

Funny - I started this post to defend Cal and now I brought him down to Davis.

SMH.

If the Raiders were interested in trading for the #1 pick (for Bryce Young) I’d ask them to include Devante Adams in any package they come up with.

Adams is on the affordable side of his contract for 2023 and 2024….if Adams were to be performing, renegotiate a front loaded extension since his current contract is paid in full at the conclusion of the 2026 season.

Adams, Collins, and Metchie would be a nice receiving group…..especially if the team selected WR, Quentin Johnston (TCU) as insurance.

Um, that’s why Davis is a dream owner to prospective head coaches. That and he doesn’t fire head coaches on an annual basis.

LOL. SMH.

Who’s throwing to Davis? Still need a QB.

From Sept 19:
Titans LT Taylor Lewan went down with a right knee injury. Reviewing the film, he appeared to go down without contact. I'm concerned that he may have suffered a retear of his ACL. He tore his right ACL in 2020.

The Titans avoided characterizing his injury at the time. BUT.............have now confirmed that he suffered a torn ACL against Buffalo back in September...............ACL #48.
