NFL Random Thought of the Day

Jaguars RB Leonard Fournette "the NFL is not as fast as I thought it would be" Fournette (shiney new 1st rnd/1st pick) has not been practicing for a while because of a "foot injury." Fournette was plagued with chronic recurrent ankle ligament sprains (tears), missed 5 games last season, voluntarily missed his Bowl game, and probably should have had his loosened ligaments surgically repaired the end of last season, instead choosing continued rehab. This foot injury is likely a compensatory injury due to his decision not to address the ankle surgically. He will likely have ongoing progressive lower limb problems until he no longer has a choice.

Tough luck for the Bills who trade with the Eagles for Jordan Mathews who was to replace Sammy Watkins. He has suffered a fracture of his sternum (breast bone) in his first practice with the Bills. They are calling it a "chip fracture" a term that I have not really come across in my extensive trauma experience, but I believe it refers to a fracture of the xiphoid process of the lower end of the sternum. At his age the xiphoid is cartilaginous (it will not become a bone until ~age 40). You would think that the xiphoid process does not have any critical functions. However, it works as an anchor for several important muscles. It acts as a lower rib insertion and an insertion for the rectus abdominis (washboard muscle) and transverse abdominis muscles that compress and flex the abdomen. Its fracture can cause severe pain and tenderness. Not unlike fractures of the coccyx (tailbone), these fractures can cause long-term/permanent chronic severe pain and tenderness well after "healing." Mathews' return to play could be from just a couple of weeks to much longer, and will be dictated primarily by his pain tolerance.

NFLN released the letter yesterday. There were multiple incidents concerning abuse and his behavior. Seems to me that Elliot wasn’t so forthcoming about all the facts.

Seems to you believe a proven liar (God'ell) and Freel a woman who wouldn't have a job if she doesn't find something wrong, over Zeke and the investigators Jerrah hired to look into the matter.

Of course God'ell (Judge/jury/executioner can do these kinds of things. I bet the next CBA looks quite different than the current CBA.

As of now the current system will be voted against by owners of the Pats/Boys/Saints/Vikes/Raiders/Steelers.

The Ravens have signed another QB...............Thaddeus Lewis, who hasn't thrown a pass in 4 years. Wonder when the Ravens are going to admit that Flacco is not dealing with a simple back muscle pull. It was to be a 1 week recovery.........it's been 4 weeks with no end in site.............As I said before, he is most likely dealing with a disc. He didn't need an MRI just to diagnose a simple muscle pull.

My guess is that despite the controversies, the owners will not agree to relinquish the Commissioner's (whoever that may be) power of final say in any future CBA.

We shall see, but with God'ell unfairly in some cases hammering these teams, if the NFLPA gets its crap together change will happen. IMHO

I know you disagree with me about how God'ell disiciplines players, but I just wanted to say thanks for all of the time you put in to keep us updated on injuries around the NFL. This is just another example of what makes TT the best MB on the interweb.

Marquis Lee Jags' hi 2nd round 2015 Draft pick went down Sunday with what was originally reported as a run of the mill ankle sprain. Looks like it's turned out to be a significant high ankle sprain. He is unlikely going to be recovered by week 1, and his season as a whole could be in jeopardy.

49ers S Chanceller James has suffered an ACL tear...........it's the 3rd time he's torn it.................#18.

Goodness CnD.

I sometimes wonder if they make the shoes so good that the body(knees) aren't able to handle it is why the injuries ok

Shoes dig and don't give

I twisted both knees rounding 3rd base one year in softball. Shoes grabbed and both knees twisted.

Sometimes i wonder if the persuit of perfect cuts in running has done more harm than good

Buccaneers backup quarterback Ryan Griffin suffered a shoulder injury during the team’s first preseason game. The team says that he will be out "weeks." From what I can gather, he has suffered an A-C joint sprain.

Hmmm....

ESPN: Saints fire two doctors who misdiagnosed Delvin Breaux
Posted 9:28 AM, August 16, 2017, by WGNO Web Desk

NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Saints have fired two team doctors after they misdiagnosed Delvin Breaux’s arm injury, ESPN writer Mike Triplett has reported.

Team orthopedists Dr. Deryk Jones and Dr. Misty Suri originally diagnosed Breaux with a contusion, but Breaux’s injury has been upgraded to a fractured fibula, according to Triplett.

Breaux is expected to miss four to six weeks after an upcoming surgery to repair the break.

Reports have been swirling recently that the Saints were considering trading Breaux due to repeated injuries, and specifically his slow rebound from what was thought to be a contusion, Triplett said.

The revelation of the misdiagnosis and the firing of the two doctors seems to have had a drastic impact on Breaux’s future with the team.

“It was accurately reported that the team has had an issue with Breaux’s string of nagging injuries in the past, but this case is different,” Triplett wrote on ESPN.com. “And it seems unlikely at this point that the team will be as eager to trade or release Breaux.”

Looks like someone need to go back to medical school if this is true!:toropalm:

LB Justin Horton who Rick Smith showed significant interest in back in May, was "snatched" up by the Jags shortly thereafter.........just to be placed on IR for an "undisclosed injury.".............missed a bullet

I'm sure CND will cover this in the injury thread later:

Colts center Ryan Kelly to have surgery, will miss time during regular season
http://www.indystar.com/story/sport...ry-miss-time-during-regular-season/575792001/

Center Ryan Kelly will need foot surgery, Colts coach Chuck Pagano announced Thursday after the team's final practice of training camp.

"You always err on the side of caution and see if the thing is going to, with a little bit of time, heal on its own. That’s not the case. So, Ryan is unfortunately is going to have surgery," Pagano said. "He’ll make a full recovery but he’s going to have to miss some time. How much time? I don’t know. I don’t have a timetable yet."

...

Kelly suffered a foot injury on Aug. 10 during practice. At the time, it was expected that he would miss several weeks but be ready for the start of the regular season.

Kelly started 16 games as a rookie in 2016

The team is also without free agent center signee Brian Schwenke, who is on the physically unable to perform list due to a foot injury. Deyshawn Bond started at center in Sunday's preseason opener with guard Jack Mewhort also taking snaps in practice. The team's top offensive line reserve, Denzelle Good, has experience at guard and tackle.

With Jeruh being so indignant over Elliot's "unfair" treatmentt by Goodell, Jeruh made a much more egregious judgement against Lucky Whitehead without any "research" into the facts of the situation. Jeruh, take your indignation and stuff it where the sun don't shine.

Lucky Whitehead: Cowboys 'pretty much' called me a liar

Still surprised there hasn't been a lawsuit for lost wages and maybe defamation against WalMart, police department, and possibly Cowboys.

Saints firing doctors brings up questions, challenges

The New Orleans Saints’ firing of two team orthopedists is unprecedented in its timing, extremely unusual on multiple levels and raises numerous questions.

An ESPN report on Wednesday said the doctors were fired after a misdiagnosis of cornerback Delvin Breaux’s leg injury. After Breaux was diagnosed with a bone contusion two weeks ago, a second X-ray by a different doctor revealed a fracture in his fibula. Breaux reportedly needs surgery and will miss four to six weeks.

Saints players have reportedly had issues with the team’s medical staff for a lengthy period.

There are likely many layers to this story that the media and public doesn’t know – and never will.

NFL team physician history.

Changes to medical staffs happen from time to time. But they almost universally occur in the offseason. And these position changes are usually handled internally and not played out in a public forum. Medical changes are usually announced through a carefully crafted press release. I do not recall a time where a team physician was called out in a leaked media report.

Further, while doctors must absolutely be held accountable, the acts detailed here do not seem to rise to a level as egregious as what the public narrative has become. Perhaps a pattern of behavior warrants the transition, but the suddenness and timing of the change is odd.

Moreover, it is highly problematic to remove a team doctor without a replacement lined up. The Saints have acknowledged they will commence a search for a new physician. If a kicker misses one too many field goals, he may get cut – but not before a new one is brought in.

The only other time I recalled a team not having a head team physician in place was when the Browns switched their medical sponsorship in 2014, but that was in the offseason.

Either Saints head coach Sean Payton made a rash decision or he felt he had no choice. Because of this quick change, the team is now stuck finding an orthopedist on short notice – one willing and able to clear his schedule. THE REST OF THE STORY

***********************************************************

It's amazing to me that the Saints official website lists only 2 team orthopedic surgeons on staff........the 2 that were fired. The Texans, for example, have 6.

This incident in itself does not seem anywhere close to some of the things our injured players have gone through evaluation-wise in the past. In the past I have posted that when there is a minor bone fracture, it can many times not show up initially on x-ray. It may take several days to clearly show up, as the fracture site decalcifies. At that time, if the player is still having symptoms, repeat x-rays should be obtain to rule out a fracture that was not originally apparent. It took a 2nd opinion surgeon to order another x-ray much later.

Seeing the Bucs cut their kicker who they drafted in the 2ND ROUND last season got me thinking... if you're that hard up for a kicker how about you offer that 2nd rounder for an established kicker?

What would it cost to get Justin Tucker for example?

Cam Robinson looks like he can handle LT at an acceptable level for the Jags.

Good news is Bortles still sucks.

USA TODAY is reporting that Oakland's Sean Smith has been arrested and charged with felony assault and felony batter with serious bodily injury. He is supposed to have had a "heart-to heart" discussion with his sister's boyfriend............before beating and stomping his head like a watermelon on July 4.

Saw an article saying the Nflpa is saying it is almost inevitable that there will be a strike after the 2020 season. They want nba players money.

Sigh.I fear Die hard Fans are going to be run out and corperation perks will fill the seating

I vaguely remember that someone on this forum is related to Marcus Johnson, the former Longhorns WR. Sounds like he's going to make the roster in Philadelphia.

https://www.cbssports.com/fantasy/football/news/eagles-marcus-johnson-expected-to-make-team/

...Johnson spent a good portion of training camp filling in for Alshon Jeffery with the first-team offense while Philadelphia's No. 1 receiver was sidelined by a shoulder strain. Jeffery's return to health has pushed Johnson back to the second unit, but it seems he took advantage of the opportunity to make a strong impression on the Eagles' coaching staff. With Jordan Matthews no longer in the picture, Johnson likely will open the season either fourth or fifth on the depth chart. He spent some time on the Philadelphia practice squad as an undrafted rookie last year.

I've got an idea...................let's contract the NFL roster to 28 (14 x 2 to fill both sides of the ball; NBA roster~14).......and expand the schedule to 82 games.................I'm all in! :chef:

I too want NBA...not going to happen, just like the NFL. Should've played basketball instead.

In the midst of all the ugly news we hear about NFL players, I wanted to post one with potentially a good ending. I wish the young man well.

Sober for seven months, Austin Seferian-Jenkins has never felt so good
August 18, 2017, 7:41 AM EDT

Austin Seferian-Jenkins was arrested for drunk driving once in college at Washington, and again last year while playing for the Buccaneers. That second arrest got him cut, and suspended for the first two games of this season.

Now with the Jets, Seferian-Jenkins said he’s had a wakeup call and has been sober for seven months, and he says giving up alcohol has changed his life.

“I’ve never felt as good as I do today,” Seferian-Jenkins writes in the New York Daily News. “When I wake up, I’m excited to go play football and excited to get in the meetings. I’m excited to see my friends. I’m excited to see my teammates. I’m excited to see my coaches. I’m excited to practice. I’m excited for life.”

Seferian-Jenkins says giving up alcohol has been such a lifestyle change that he’s lost 33 pounds and now feels energized about working out and getting ready for the season.

“You start changing your lifestyle and you don’t want to drink,” he writes. “You want to get healthy. I didn’t know what to do with all this free time. I’ll do hot Pilates. I’ll run. I’ll do an extra workout. I’ll go hiking. I’ll go walking around the mall. You got a lot of time in the day. I’d get two or three workouts done by 3 p.m. So, what do I now? I might as well work out again.”

After he serves his suspension, Seferian-Jenkins says he’ll be more ready to go than ever before.

They would probably settle for more guaranteed money in their contracts.

Derek Carr signed a contract for $125M with only 40 guaranteed. After the 40 anything can happen. Gordon Hayward signed one for 128 has the total value of the deal at signing. Also extensions are added to contracts like Hardens vs being reworked in the NFL.

To me its the guaranteed money I would be eyeing.

Former Ravens linebacker Zach Orr is wanting to "unretire" after retiring following the discovery of a C1 (cervical/neck) spinal vertebral stenosis (abnormally small tunnel for the spinal cord to pass) at the end of last season (IR'ed) when he was being evaluated for a cervical herniated disc injury he sustained. Just a week earlier, he suffered a "stinger" of his neck, and in addition during another play he was previously placed through the concussion protocol and quickly passed it, as it appears his type of anatomy/injury mimicked these symptoms without any direct brain injury. The Ravens were pushing for Orr to not retire, while the medical staff advised that he do so. Knowing details of his history, I'm not understanding where he is getting his present guidance.

Former Baltimore Ravens linebacker Zach Orr visited the Texans prior to the start of training camp.
Ultimately, it didn't result in a deal as the team evaluated his medical situation.

Now, Orr has announced his retirement for good in a piece he authored for The Players Tribune.

The veteran free agent had explored relaunching his NFL career after originally deciding to retire in January due to a congenital condition discovered by Ravens team doctors that showed a vertebrae at the top of his neck wasn't completely formed. The birth defect was discovered when Orr sustained a pair of herniated disks in his neck late last season.

Orr met with the Detroit Lions, Indianapolis Colts, New York Jets, Texans and the Cleveland Browns, among others.

A second-team All-Pro selection from North Texas, Orr led the Ravens last season with 132 tackles and intercepted three passes.

"Today, I'm officially retiring from professional football ... again," Orr wrote. "And I'm even more at peace this time around because the teams have spoken. If there was any way I could come back, I would. Now, I know that's not possible. But it's just bad timing. Sometimes, that's how life goes. LINK

#Patriots 3rd rd pick DE Derek Rivers tore his ACL & sprained his LCL, per the initial MRI. 2nd opinion coming to confirm surgery is needed.

8:33 AM - 18 Aug 2017

I hope we are not going to revisit rehab and stem cell approach with Rivers..............another Tannehill fiasco. Again, if they are debating rehab vs surgery for what might be "only" a partial ACL tear, I strongly feel the conservative approach is inappropriate and bound to fail in an elite NFL player.

Are you sure that they want NBA players money? I thought they wanted salaries fully guaranteed as they are in MLB and the NBA but not necessarily a salary increase (not that they wouldn't take one).

Cam Newton threw just a couple of days into TC............was so sore that he has hardly thrown since. It was reported that he threw just a total of 10 times during recent joint workouts with the Titans. He is now again on the shelf for the next preseason game.
