NFL Random Thought of the Day

Forbes started only seven games in two seasons and played in only six games in 2024 with one start. He was benched both years, but also suffered from various injuries that sidelined him. If Forbes goes unclaimed on waivers, he would count $9.1 million against their salary cap in 2025.
I just saw this about Forbes. He was a very polarizing figure during the 2023 draft discussions here. Picked up by the Rams on waivers, so about 15 teams passed on Forbes. Needs to dedicate himself in the weight room and become more physical.

Lions are also losing Montgomery. It's a blow, but one they can survive. Gibbs becomes the ace and takes more of the workload. The Lions are becoming this years version of the walking wounded.

And BTW, I love Dan Cambell, but with a guy like that you live with the sword and die by the sword. Down by 10 and still roughly 11 minutes in the game and you do an onsides kick? Especially with this crappy ass idiotic "we have to tell the other team it's an onsides kick" rule the NFL has now. That's got to be the dumbest of the dumbest rule changes ever and there are some doozies.

But back to my point lol. Why on Earth are you trying an "announced" onsides kick at the 11-minute mark down by ten? That's some cray cray **** right there.

** Prayers up for Randy Moss. I hope he is still with us in 5 years but Doc hasn't encouraged me that it's likely. Hope he gets more time on Earth. Cancer sucks!

Thanks CND. Fortunately he was well off enough to stay at home with hospice so he felt no real pain the last couple weeks. His mother, at 66, died of pancreatic cancer also.

My doctor has told me it’s not genetic however I just started having symptoms of EPI, sure enough that’s what I have so I’m on Creon now and I’ve stopped all alcohol for good. Fingers crossed.
EPI is commonly a function of having chronic inflammation of the pancreas............most commonly from alcohol and smoking.
Creon is an appropriate treatment...........of course, diet restriction of high fat, especially fried fatty foods along with abstinence from alcohol and smoking needs to accompany the treatment. Typically patients can do very well on this regimen, as long as the diagnosis and the severity of the damage is correct. Many patients will have associate illnesses that have more effect on the prognosis for long life.

Good to see you are taking it seriously. BTW, make sure your vitamin K, A, D, and E are checked, as they are fat dependent for absorption and their deficiency can cause significant problems themselves.

Good luck!

For those upset the Texans didn’t go get a guy like Johnson at the deadline: This is the risk when you do a midseason trade and don’t have a chance to vet a player or acclimate them to your offense. What if it takes time to get them to the level they can contribute to your offense? And what if that player is a diva who doesn’t want to put forth the effort needed to break into your team’s rotation?

If that is true, no way he plays Saturday.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes has a high ankle sprain that the Kansas City Chiefs "don't think [is] bad," a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Monday.

The diagnosis was revealed through testing done Monday. The Chiefs will evaluate Mahomes through the week to determine if he has a chance to play Saturday against the Houston Texans.

Mike Tomlin has been able to manage and coach personalities like James Harrison, Le'Veon Bell, Ben Roethlisberger, and Antonio Brown. Yet, gave up on Diontae Johnson and traded him for a 6th round pick. Trading for him was a boom or bust move by the Ravens and right now, he's not worth the headache.

This is his 3rd high ankle sprain...............left in 2019, right in 2023, and this one on the right. With a short week coming up, the Chiefs would be ill-advised to have him play Saturday and even the next game.................a re-injury could put him out during the playoffs. Even with a "mild high ankle," this being on the right, his plant/push off foot, his ability for hitting forceful tight windows and long passes would undoubtedly be severely compromised.

About time! I've been waiting to see this kid. They should've done it last night, it would've made the game much more entertaining.

Kyle Shanahan: 49ers “obviously made a mistake” signing De’Vondre Campbell
By Michael David Smith
Published December 18, 2024 05:18 PM

The 49ers have suspended linebacker De’Vondre Campbell for the rest of the season after he refused to play on Thursday night, and coach Kyle Shanahan is acknowledging that in hindsight he wishes he’d never brought Campbell to San Francisco in the first place.

Playing for the Packers last year, Campbell seemed disgruntled, and when Green Bay cut him this offseason he badmouthed the team. Shanahan was asked today if the 49ers thought about those issues before signing him. Shanahan said the 49ers knew about the red flags with Campbell but were desperate to sign a linebacker after Dre Greenlaw had torn his Achilles tendon in the Super Bowl.

“Yeah, of course,” Shanahan answered. “We look into all that. It was tough losing Dre. We knew we were going to need a starting-caliber linebacker. We had two guys that we thought we had committed that we lost in free agency. Then another guy got cut after that and became available.”

Shanahan said his own experience with Campbell on the Falcons and conversations he had with others in the league who knew Campbell made him think things would be OK.

“I was with De’Vondre his rookie year in Atlanta, so I knew what he was capable of,” Shanahan said. “Not that I was real close with the defensive guys, being the offensive coordinator there, but I know we liked him in that building. I know a lot of guys who have coached him who have been good. And we obviously made a mistake. It’s not something that we didn’t look into.

We look into everything. You weigh the risk-reward of stuff. You weigh the situation that you have and what decision you can make in terms of the options. By no means was it our first option. But at the time, with what went down, we thought it was our best option. And it didn’t work out.”

It certainly didn’t work out for the 49ers, and it may serve as a cautionary tale for every team when considering signing a player who has worn out his welcome in his last stop.

The bolded piece at the end is very true. Just how many malcontents turn it around to the point of being “worth it” for their next team?

Several reports have stated that Cowboys LB Overshown has undergone "successful" surgery for tears of his ACL, MCL and PCL and his surgeon feels he could return to play sometime next year mid to end of season. His return is not a given at all...........and if it does occur, 2026 is a more realistic attempt at return. History make his return anywhere close to previous performance extremely unlikely.

Rehabilitation and Return to Sport in Athletes

Postoperative Rehabilitation and Return to Sport Following Multiligament Knee Reconstruction

Fifty athletes from the National Football League were observed following MLKR to find that 70.8% of ACL/MCL tears and 55.6% of ACL with PCL or FCL involvement returned to play at 305.1 ± 58.9 and 459.2 ± 245.1 days, respectively. Return to previous performance was 43.5% for ACL/MCL and 18.5% for ACL with PCL or FCL.

Given the severity of MLKI and the complexity of multiligament knee reconstruction (MLKR), return to sport (RTS) has historically been considered highly unlikely. RTS data have been inconsistent and incomplete, but existing evidence cites a RTS rate of 53%,11 with competitive athletes having a lower RTS rate of 22%.11 While surgical proficiency with MLKR has improved, RTS may be hindered by concerns regarding long-term joint health. MLKI patients show high rates of concomitant injury to articular cartilage (28.3%-48%) and menisci (37.3%-55%) at the time of initial injury

Am I missing something on the DROY vote? Why aren’t Bullock and Lassiter being talked about more as serious contenders for this award? I would understand if the Texans were a “bad team” but they just clinched the division and the defense is very very good.

In particular, why is Mitchell the CB from Philly more likely to win than either Bullock or Lassiter when he has 0 INTs?

Defensive Rookie of the Year

Jared Verse
Los Angeles Rams · OLB
The 19th overall pick, Verse received 15 votes -- evidence of what a force he has been in the Rams’ recovery from a 1-4 start to regain control of the NFC West. He has 4.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. He leads all rookies in tackles for loss (11) and QB hits (17).

Eagles cornerback Quinyon Mitchell, who was taken three picks later, finished second with six votes. He has started all 14 games and been credited with 10 pass breakups.

Rams defensive end Braden Fiske (second round, 39th overall) received three votes. Commanders cornerback Mike Sainristil(second round, 50th) and Texans safety Calen Bullock (third round, 78th) received one each. One executive abstained.

Ok, so WTF was Campbell doing kicking a ******* onside kick with 12 minutes LEFT??
I was even more confused by the direction of the kick. With the new onside kick rules teams can use unbalanced formations for onside kicks: Six players on one side of the kicker, with four on the other. So why in the hell did he kick to side with only four players?

As Gomer Pyle said surprise, surprise, surprise!

Probably because Verse is by far the best pick this year on Defense.

Reminds me of the stories about Cal (before DeMeco was hired). End of the day, you aren’t given ownership of an NFL team based on merit. They buy (or inherit) the franchise and can run them however they want.

Obviously, the more hands off they are (provided they hire the right people) the more successful they will be with the on-field product. But they’ll make money either way, so some owners can’t resist playing with their toy even if it results in a subpar on-field product for the fans.

I would put Bullock/Lassiter on par with the impact Verse has made. Definitely moreso than Mitchell or the other DBs.

Bullock in particular 5 INTs and 1 FR. That’s a DROY season.

I agree in isolation, our guys are definitely making plays and playing solid.

Verse is making offenses shift their entire schemes.

I thought they stayed at square one when they drafted him. Was very happy with their pick there and the Inbreds taking Levis too.
This is what happens when you try to draft a Lamar Jackson who unlike Lamar, isn't a very good QB.

This is not an accurate account of what is going on with Diggs. This is not really a simple bone graft. It is a bone/cartilage (osteochondral) graft.............an alternative to microfracture surgery (more extensive) to replace missing articular cartilage. The procedure is also known as a knee cartilage transplant, is a surgical procedure that replaces damaged cartilage in the knee with healthy cartilage from another part of the joint that is non-weight bearing.

I wouldn't count on him ever returning to anywhere close to previous performance...................if he can even return at all.

Trevon Diggs to undergo bone graft surgery on his left knee
By Charean Williams
Published December 20, 2024 09:39 PM

Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs has cartilage damage in his left knee that will require a bone graft surgery, Clarence Hill of alldlls.com reports.

The surgery requires a longer recovery time.

The Cowboys already anticipated Diggs would miss the start of the 2025 season. The rehab now will be even longer.

“I hope it’s definitely sooner,” coach Mike McCarthy said Friday. “But this is a big recovery for Trevon. It’s way too early for me to speculate on that.”

Diggs will have bone tissue transplanted into his knee to repair damaged bones to stimulate growth and strengthen the area.

It’s the same knee that needed surgery early last season to repair a torn ACL, which kept him out 14 games in 2023.

He played 10 games this season despite groin and ankle injuries and the cartilage issue in his knee.

His base salary of $9 million for 2025 is guaranteed for injury.

How bad of a mistake was it really?

Garrett wants out:

I roll my eyes when I read about a professional athlete wanting to be traded to a contender. Garrett has two years and around $15 million left on his deal. He wants an extension and he knows the Browns can't afford it. It's always about the money. Especially when they say they just want to win.

Having said that, the Browns should trade Garrett. Head into the rebuild full bore and use you most valuable resource to accrue draft picks. There are enough teams looking for a premier pass rusher to create a bidding war,

Agreed, as much as we all like JJ his exit from Houston was similar.

“Just want to win, go to a contender…”

But he went to the highest bidder instead of the team that gave him the best chance of winning a ring.
