NFL Random Thought of the Day

UDFA WR Justyn Ross has been signed to the Chiefs 90. This is one player that if I were a team physician, I would NEVER even consider clearing him to play.

Watch him stay healthy and play well for the next 5 yrs.

What's his chances of getting paralyzed?

If you understood this birth defect and how its "repair" leaves him at just as high risk for paralysis, you would understand that his risk of paralysis is much greater than him ever making it intact to even close to 5 years. This is the type of decision that should be taken out of a player's hands without question. The only supportive voice has been his own surgeon which led to the unwise decision by him and, of course, Clemson to return for a limited encore in 2021. Hits in the NFL will make those he took at Clemson look like love taps. He underwent removal of an upper cervical disc with total fusion of the C2 and C3 vertebra utilizing bone grafts, which leaves him with decreased neck range of motion and placed much more significant stress on the adjacent vertebral segments above and below the fused vertebrae. Even without playing football, these adjacent segments are known by natural history (and without additional direct neck trauma) to develop bone spurs and degenerate and require additional future fusions. Thus the 2020 surgery he has undergone sets him up perfectly for any further significant trauma to his neck allowing his neck to potentially snap like a twig and severing his spinal cord.

Just to be clear, Ross has Klippel-Feil syndrome (KFS)............a complicated congenital disorder presenting due to abnormal fusion of cervical vertebrae at C2 and C3, produced by a failure in the division or normal segmentation of the cervical spine vertebrae with compression of the spinal cord occuring in early fetal development.

NFL tweaks the rules for interviewing head-coaching candidates
May 28, 2022, 10:26 AM EDT

As the NFL tries to nudge the owners toward a more fair, thorough, and inclusive process for interviewing and hiring head coaches, the league has made a couple of important tweaks to the hiring process, aimed at giving all candidates more time to get ready for their interviews.

This week, the league issued a resolution that makes two important changes to the process.

First, teams cannot interview a head-coaching candidate who is employed by another NFL team until the third day after the conclusion of that team’s Week 18 game. This specifically applies to assistant coaches working for teams that did not qualify for the playoffs or that earned a first-round bye. For teams that play in the wild-card round, assistant coaches cannot be interviewed until the following Tuesday (for Saturday and Sunday games) or Wednesday (for the Monday game).

Second, no in-person interviews are permitted with candidates who are employed by other teams until after all wild-card games have ended. Before the end of the wild-card round, in-person interviews may occur only with candidates employed by the team hiring a head coach or candidates not currently employed by the NFL.

The resolution, which amends the language of the league’s Anti-Tampering Policy, applies through May 31, 2024.

It’s a far cry from the suggestion made on Super Bowl Sunday by Hall of Fame coach Tony Dungy, that the entire process be paused until the playoffs end. But it’s a step in that direction. Maybe more steps will be made in that direction, until the league’s standard approach becomes conducting no interviews until after the last piece of confetti falls in mid-February.

Antonio Brown says he’s not playing in 2022
Posted by Charean Williams on May 28, 2022, 10:06 PM EDT

When we last saw Antonio Brown on an NFL football field, the receiver was doing a shirtless sprint to the locker room during a Jan. 2 game between the Buccaneers and Jets. Was that the last game of Brown’s career?

Brown has received no interest in free agency after his meltdown, which prompted the Buccaneers to release him, as well as his refusal to undergo ankle surgery without a commitment from a team.

Interviewed during a Fan Controlled Football game, Brown said he is done with the NFL.

“Obviously, we live the game, but you can’t play forever,” Brown said. “I think I’m a great player that’s done everything in the game.”

Asked if he would suit up in 2022, Brown said, “Nah, don’t play yourself looking at me to play.”

Earlier this month, out of the blue, Brown stated on social media a desire to retire as a member of the Steelers.

Gladney's accident occurred around 2:30 a.m. He was was one of two victims in the crash. The second victim has not been identified. No details on the cause of the crash, as the accident remains under investigation.

As an aside, Gladney is a defendant in a civil assault lawsuit brought by a woman, in which a hearing was scheduled for Aug. 1. The woman was seeking more than $1 million in damages. The suit alleges Gladney "punched, choked and abused" her for more than two hours on the night of April 1, 2021, and later attempted to bribe and threaten her into silence. A criminal case against Gladney previously was not successful.

Where does this go from here?

More information on the Gladney crash.

Police said a preliminary investigation found that a white vehicle was speeding and clipped a second vehicle from behind. The white vehicle then lost control and hit a freeway pier beam, killing the man and woman inside, the press release stated. The second vehicle was also occupied by a man and woman, who were not seriously injured.

Since he's so insistent on retirement, he's just tired of the game and won't show much effort anymore. So retirement is the right thing to do.

Seven time 49ers center Pro Bowler Alex Mack has announced that he is hanging up his cleats after 13 seasons. No doubt, the decision was encouraged by the significant concussion he sustained in Dec of last year. The 49ers will have a difficult time replacing him this season.

The Eagles have placed Brandon Brooks on the Reserve-Retired list. For those not familiar with this designation, if a player retires prior to the expiration of his contract, the team can place him on the Reserve/Retired List and retain its rights to the player under the player's contract.

I predict that gambling will eventually be the NFL's downfall. Maybe not soon, but it's just a matter of time before the inherent greed and corruption that gambling brings infects the NFL and there is little that Roger can do to "protect the shield" once the perceived integrity of the league has been destroyed.

Gambling has a been a part of every sport in the world for who knows how long, and it hasn't brought any of them down yet. Nothing lasts forever, so eventually all of this will crumble, but not any time soon. Gambling is just another revenue stream, and it will work just fine.

This isn't about winning/losing.

It's about voting against publicly funding sports stadiums, which obviously by looking at the Titans stadium is a bad investment.

But hey, it appears you're part of the heard that doesn't mind paying more in taxes for bad investments. Just as long as you get to eat some bbq and drink some beer in the parking lot and maybe/maybe not watch a little football. Good news is that you will be seen, which is what's most important to a vast majority of the crowd.

This post wasn't meant for you personally.

As things stand now, there are more communities desperate for a pro sports team than there are pro sports teams. As long as that is the case, and the American sports system stays the way it is (vs for example the European system, which also isn't perfect, where any town can have a pro team competing on some level with promotion/relegation), the taxpayers will continue to fund these cathedrals of greed.
