NFL Draft 2010: Day 2

I absolutely love this pick! I have been on the Tate bandwagon for months. Perfect fit for us and if we can get DT & FS or Ol in the 3rd this will be a great draft!

I guess the judgement is that Gerhart is not a franchise back.

I think he's a guy you throw out there when you know the defense is going to blitz and you want a safety-valve to toss the ball to.

Because he will get the ball out in space and will eat up DBs trying to run up to stop him. Dallas Clark'ish, IMO.

Smith/Kubiak worshipers - (or Smithiak, whatever):

Anybody who thinks Tate is as good as Gerhart didn't watch CFB last year. That guy would have helped to put us on the map.

Except Toby can neither catch nor block

Ok, ok. I have cooled down a little. If the third is a good pick, then I will be perfectly happy. As I have said a couple times now, I give the pick an A-. I did not like the trade back, but as someone pointed out, I lost objectivity. I believe I have regained that (somewhat, it is hard to due in the blink of an eye, but I am working on it), and can move on.

Good man, who do you want with that third?

No, I think you are entitled to your position. Don't apologize for it, by any means. And I wasn't trying to bust your chops.

I have been 100% uninvolved in studying the run-up to the draft. I participated in ZERO mocks, and I didn't do all the hours of research and watch all the coverage.

You obviously did. And I think you see something in him that we could have used. Kaiser Toro saw something in Cody that we could have used. Smithiak must have had Tate on their brain the whole way!

Toby might do better in Minny than he would have here. I don't think Michael Irvin would have prospered on a multitude of other teams had he been on any team other than the Cowboys. So perhaps Smithiak felt that Tate is what's needed and Toby (while a nice player) would not provide the specifics that they desire, considering what we currently have to work with.

The thing about Tate, from everything I've read, he has some issues with fumbling. You can really get in Kubiak's doghouse not holding onto the ball, so I'm a little surprised with the pick.

I was not apologizing for my opinions on Gerhart and Tate, because I still think I was right, but for my gross overreaction.

You were right to say I lost objectivity, I needed to read it.

Fine, let us wait to see what they do with that pick. It is just that I believe that you dont pass on franchise caliber backs in the second. You just dont.

If Gerhart was a franchise caliber RB he would've gone in the first. He's not. Not saying he's a bad player.

Other thing I think is he doesn't fit well with what we're looking for from our RBs. He's not known for decent hands out of the backfield, don't think he blocked well or had to at Stanford. Also he doesn't have great initial burst.

I think he's going to fit well in Minnesota. The line there can open up holes for him to run through and they likely won't ask him to be a major target out of the backfield. The move makes a lot of sense especially if Favre decides to not come back. No matter who the QB is he's going to have a pounding run game to fall back on.

You can get in Kubiak's doghouse with fumbling, but you can also get away with it if you're the guy, evidently. Slaton was allowed to fumble a lot more than Jacoby, for instance. I'm not sure JJ has 7 career fumbles lost (maybe he does, dunno), but Slaton had 7 in half a season.

Colts got a damn fine player in Iowa's Pat Angerer :(

Not looking forward to playing against that D twice a year with that stud on it!!!

This is the last post regarding Gerhart for me tonight, as I am on board with the Tate pick, just a little disappointed.

The draft is not a perfect science. Teams miss franchise players all the time.

Ok, a 3rd round wish list before I go cook dinner.

Asamoah
Arthur Jones
Geno Atkins
J D Walton
Mike Johnson
Morgan Burnett
Major Wright
Max Tennant
Mitch Petrus
Donovan Warren

Anyone up for picking another CB in the 3d? Seems like some nice guys are left here, and you can never have enoughs CBs... might even push Quin to FS.

I've been reading some scouting reports on Ben Tate, and it would seem most of them agree he's a good fit for a ZBS or one-cut and go systems. The most consistent knock on him I've found is he doesn't always show up for all his games.

Does he at least send a proxy?

It's hard to show up for all your games when you play in the SEC.
