Injury Thread

Grade II are usually associated with only mild instability and seldom require surgery. However, Grade III or fractures accompanying Grade II are usually associated with significant instability and therefore indications for surgery.
Not to be seen again until 2017 ?

Would an immediate surgery lead a quicker return to the field do you think than say just the typical lingering high-ankle sprain?

Outcomes for high ankle sprain surgeries when indicated when performed soon after the injury are significantly better.

If a commonly used technique which includes screw fixation is employed, the screws are not removed until ~3 months. Many surgeons do not allow walking on that leg during that period because of concern over breaking of the screw. Rehab after this depends on the exact nature of the injury, but would be expected to be an additional 1 to 3 months

Are screws common for a high ankle sprain?

This is not good. Hopefully it'll be a case where he can be put on ir designated for return.
We'll have to get used to Mancz in the mean time.

He's a rookie, I think he's already missed too much time. If he's not going to be ready over the next 8 weeks alone, I'd just as soon stick with Mancz, unless he's performing much worse than we've seen so far.

Continuity is key.

Hitting the waiver wire!

Bergstrom was signed as a Center/Guard and may be better than Mancz just due to his play experience and years in the league. The only reason he didn't start at Center in this game was because he was covering for Jeff Allen at Guard. I think if Martin is going to be out any length of time they will probably play Bergstrom at Center with Mancz as a backup Center/Guard and stash Martin on IR This would give him a year to heal up and come back ready for next season, kind of like they did with Savage last year. The O-line has definitely had it's problems since BOB has been here. They really need to get this shored up in next years draft!

Except for the fact that it was Mancz starting last week against Frisco and not Bergstrom. And I believe Bergstrom got yanked pretty quick in favor of Aboushi last night. He may make the team because the Texans are just running out of bodies, otherwise he'd probably be getting cut.

Change Bergstrom to Stromberg and let him line up backward and show the other team his ass. Har, har...:ahhaha:

If his leg is immobilized for three months, it'll be atrophied when the ligament is healed. That's an entire offseason of strength and conditioning training out the window. Not to mention the critical rookie reps missed. He'd might as well pack it up for 2016.

Greg Manz played 38 starts at guard and tackle despite knee injury missing last two games 2013. January 2014 he tore labrum during east-west game. I am hoping he can hold position down even if he does not excel this season. He is intelligent and in college was known to be a calming influence on teammates which could be useful with this line. He played in a ZBS offense three years at OG and 2014 at center. Having long time vet Allen on his right should be very good for Manz. If Brown returns, X has another year of improvement and Newton has another 2014, we could have a pretty good line. Brown, Clark, X and Newton have played together, Allen as a vet should adjust quickly. Coach knows what he has in DB and Newton so at least other are getting playing time. (optimistic smiley goes here).

Manz if a season starter will be one of the best deals we have ever had financially. 2015, 2016 and 2016 $1.581 [80 out of 97 centers]. Looks like Covington will be another at $1.575 for same three season plus 2018 at only $705,000. I will gladly give Smith credit if this happens.

Sorry didn't mean to step on any toes, since some of the previous post were not strictly injury I didn't see the harm, I will adhere to your request. Thanks for pointing out my error. Also thanks for the link much appreciated.
Nooooo!

Yep, it's true! Just saw this in the Chron: http://www.chron.com/sports/texans/article/Texans-Nick-Martin-has-season-ending-ankle-9183920.php
Just got out of surgery and saw this................From last Sunday's reports that the injury was "severe" and "surgery MAY be required," I was just waiting for this to be made official............the delay?.............not a matter of what needed to be done, but a matter of who would be chosen to perform it.............it in no way came as any surprise to me.

BTW, on Martin.........if anyone begins to speculate that ultimately he could still return later this year as the "IR Designated to Return" player, after this type of surgery, it isn't going to happen.

CnD can you please explain why an ankle sprain requires a surgery that causes Martin miss the entire season. Maybe I just have a different mental image of what a sprain is compared to the medical definition of it.

Doc, usual recovery time for this kind of injury?

I posted this last Sunday:

......and that doesn't include the time to catch up to game playing shape/speed.

Holy Mother of All Reaches, Batman!

CND, help us out here. Are high ankle sprains normally caused by a traumatic event, or are they compensatory injuries related to knee injuries that happened three years ago? What is the correlation/causation between high ankle sprains and previous knee injuries?

It is unlikely that Martin was affected by these 3-year-old injuries in that he did not demonstrate continued problems through the 2014 and 2015 seasons. Martin was just coming off a back problem, which after he returned, he was found to actually have difficulty holding the line, most likely due to residual discomfort/weakness of his back. The play in which he was injured, he was being pushed back, which indirectly contributed to being placed in the position where the RB ran onto and rolled his ankle. But it was the acute "collision" that was the direct cause of his severe high ankle.

I posted this last Sunday:

Thank you for info as always. Meaning, it all depends on how fast he can be back in playing shape. 3 months not allow to walk + 3 months for rehab + 6 months to get back in playing shape. Sounds like he should be back this time next year (may not be 100% but, should be able to play hopefully).

So......How'd his surgery go Doc?

Patch up that ankle?

Can we keep this thread for injury reporting?
Thank you, JB. I think it's the least I can expect in return for my attempts to keep this MB well-informed concerning our players' injuries. Efforts on everyone's part to evaluate which thread is most appropriate for their posts BEFORE they post are way less time-intensive than the time I put into trying to consolidate injury information in the Injury threads. I have called for this several times in the past and still this request for gesture of common courtesy has fallen on deaf ears.

Nick Martin Out 16 Weeks after Surgery

The Texans sustained two huge blows to their offensive line on Thursday.

Second-round pick and projected starting center Nick Martin is expected to miss the entire season due to an ankle injury that requires surgery, according to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport.

The 23-year-old drew comparisons to his brother, Cowboys guard Zack, and was a favorite of head coach Bill O'Brien's heading into the regular season. Martin sustained the injury a week ago during a practice against the New Orleans Saints.....

Brown and Newton should be ready to go by game 1....i mean we are still 3 weeks away.

Rapaport has been the Grim Reaper today for us. Duane is NOT going to be ready Game 1

RapSheet:
More on #Texans Oline: I’m told LT Duane Brown (torn quad) is not expected to be ready for the season. HOU being cautious, may remain on PUP
