I’ll call it bitter payback. OB was pizzed Hopkins wanted a new contract. OB didn’t have the cap space to give him his fair market value. Since Hopkins isn’t going to budge OB decides to trade him. OB also decides to make sure Hopkins knows what happens when you challenge the Boss....he trades him to the Cardinals and Bidwell thinking he really stuck it to him in the end. Personally, I don’t think OB expected Bidwell to give Hopkins the extension.
No, OB ducked up in the trade. Not one person associated with the NFL has stated that OB pulled off a great trade b/c it favored the Texans.
Of course you would say that
If OB felt the need to trade Hopkins for whatever reason, so be it. The shock of it was an issue at first, but real problem is and will always be, having that caliber of talent and not getting adequate value in return. I don’t care if Johnson rushes for 2,500 yards and 30 TDs, you did NOT get back what you should have for a 3 time All Pro player, when those with lesser accomplishments are getting teams more. No amount of spinning changes that.

At the end of the day the trade has to equate to better results to be scored a success. If you think it was a financial move then the replacement parts must contribute to more overall success. If you think it was motivated by "other stuff", then there is no metric to measure that against. Nuk got what he wanted so let's hope what the Texans got yields in the results they want.
It takes two to tango
And there’s 30 other teams to tango with.
And if you think OB didn't put out feelers to all of them or turned down any 1st round trade offers, you're naive
We got a guy on the team now that’s never been to a Pro Bowl, much less been named All Pro, that’s been traded twice for a 1st. If you can’t get at least that for a 3 time All Pro with 3 years left on his contract, GM is not for you.
Cooks never held out, nor did he demand a new contract with three years remaining on his current contract that is only two years old
Hopkins never held out either. And who cares if he asked for more money? He had 3 years left. You could have said no, not no get out right now I’ll take pennies on the dollar in return.
He did hold out, albeit was only one day. If you tell him know then you either force a holdout or have a disgruntled player in the locker room
Should be required reading for anybody that wants to discuss the trade.
I don’t give a damn if he put out feelers or not. Part of the problem is, the league has a book on OB. They know they can take this dude. So maybe you’re right and that’s all he could get. If that’s the case, this guy doesn’t need to be an NFL GM.

In essence, you're right. We can't put the toothpaste back in the tube. If O'Brien can make this a championship team, everything he's done is right. If not, he should be fired, from both jobs.He just better get this team to the AFCCG ismy only concern

At least that's how it should be. Tired of arguing with the apologists. The season starts today.
I don't see where it takes into account any of the issues that led to the Texans seeking a trade, initially. After the dust settles, it's easy to justify how the $$$ was spent. Giving Mercilus and Martin extensions played a part in squeezing the cap, also. A lot of this is based off getting rid of Cooks and David Johnson's deals. Which makes those trades look even worse. There were many ways to spend the Texans cap room and draft capital. I'm certain a real NFL GM would have gotten more value. What do you think about the article CnD posted?
I agree with your post though

Sorry, O'Brien is not a genius GM. Unless, he wins big. Otherwise, he's an unmitigated failure as a GM who tied the hands of the HC.
Your scenario. of the trade of Hopkins reminds me of Old School coaches. Go against them and you paid for it.I’ll call it bitter payback. OB was pizzed Hopkins wanted a new contract. What did the Jags get for Ramsey?it doesn’t take any of it into account b/c it’s largely irrelevant. The big drivers for his trade were b/c he wanted more money. The big drivers for the compensation we ultimately received for him were b/c ..............he wanted more money and teams clearly didn’t want to give up a 1st for him.
Hated the trade as much as the next guy, but this team needs more pieces than just Hopkins to be a contender
AgreedRight, and practically giving him away like they did isn’t going to get you those pieces.
I thought it was a bad thing for one receiver to get most of the targets?14 for 151...
The other receivers had 13 for 79
& they beat the conference champs

Kyler Murray ran for a c-note........
And if the Texans first game is any indicator of things to come, Watson is going to just lock onto his next favorite target Will Fuller. If that turns out to being the case, getting rid of Hopkins cured nothing at all. Indeed, it may have made the offense less potent.I thought it was a bad thing for one receiver to get most of the targets?![]()
Wow. I bet that kept the 9er defense on their heels.

I understand there may have been some hidden motives in jettisoning Hopkins out of town for less than fair market value for a receiver of his caliber, but that may not change how Watson plays or how HC O’Brien functions. We’ll see.

But will those numbers matter in the end? Chances are probably not.

When your WR avg 10ypc, I think it's indicative of a broken offense.
So lots of yards and no points.Well let’s bring this up while the salt is still being rubbed into the wound.
I guess the Texans locker room cancer turned into the Cardinals locker room Cancer....the zodiac sign!!! 14 catches out of 16 targets for an eye-opening 151 yards and what should’ve been a TD.
This was his first game experience with Kyler Murray. Anyone care to speculate as to what kind of season he may deliver in this offense once he gets a little more time with KM?
By the way.....DHop delivered these results on the road and against one of the better NFL defenses.
Perhaps those hidden motives were not about changing how Watson plays or how coach functions. Perhaps it was to move Hopkins. What came in return was just that. No bad GM decision but a Janice McNair decision. Agree with it or not.And if the Texans first game is any indicator of things to come, Watson is going to just lock onto his next favorite target Will Fuller. Going forward I expect to see Watson running wisely for many yards forward, not side to side or backwards.Any time the 1 guy not accounted for in the run game goes off like that, it sure as hell does.
If the Texans 1st game is any indicator of things to come for other teams, its that KC's defense is seriously underrated. We had Nuk against them in the playoffs last year & it didn't seem to matter a whole lot.
As far as Nuk...I said he'd put up numbers out there...Kingsbury's offense is a high play volume type of offense & you gotta work real hard to not put up numbers in that system. But will those numbers matter in the end? Chances are probably not. Nuk put up those vintage Brandon Marshall numbers today. Those type of that he used to put up when he was playing in Denver.......when he was Jay Cutler's only real option out wide. 14-15 reception games. They look great on paper, but when you watch the games not a whole lot of them factor into the outcome of the game. Good for him, that's what he wants, to be targeted alot...
So lots of yards and no points.![]()
