Head Coach Candidates

I’ve got my eye on the Patriots new OC. They’ve been a juggernaut on offence for years.
I heard he is a qb whisperer. He was instrumental in bryce young overcoming his physical limitations so much so that he is now considered the highest rated qb in the draft. That same patriots oc had previously took a late round draft pick in new england and turned him into the goat named tom brady. This guy is going to make a great head coach.

Interesting to hear the turn off for some of these coordinator candidates with certain teams has been what staff members they’re being told they’d have to retain, & also the time it would take to acclimate & educate current staff to their scheme & system, per a league source.

Texans are at it again. Sounds just like Caserio.

God I hope not, but bet it is.

No coach on this staff is anywhere near being worth this, like not even in the same galaxy.

Mills sucks Elephant balls. You're never getting a decent HC in here if you're selling him on the idea that Mills is the guy we want for another year. That's absolutely never going to happen in 10 million lifetimes. Mills is terrible and wouldn't start on 31 other teams...but ya let's give him 100 starts because you know...lack of experience.

Getting back to some form of reality...

I had a dream candidate this fall before any speculation started, and his name was Demeco Ryans. After Lovie was predictably jettisoned I wanted an OC...with one exception, and this was the one and only DC that I felt was worth the exception. He'll be the best HC this team has ever had. I'm crossing my fingers, my toes, and the one hair that's left on my head is tied in a bow hoping that I don't jinx it.

He's the guy that will take this team to levels it's never achieved. Now does he need some help...of course. Nick needs to draft well, and they need to get the QB right at 1.2. I'm hoping for Young, but Stroud has good upside as well. Only Jesus can turn water into wine. But if Nick gets most of these high picks right, Demeco will turn this thing around so that by 2024 we're a real contender.

So, I've been on the Ryans bandwagon for months. He's the guy I want and I'd be more pumped for that move than any HC we've had by far. If for some reason, Demeco turns the gig down, I'm going after Shane Steichen, and I can get solidly behind that guy. I think he could do some really good things too, but Ryans has that it factor that really separates him from the field.

There's really nobody else I'm interested in seriously. I want Ryans or Shane...preferably Ryans.

But If Shane also turns down the gig, I suppose Gannon would be ok...but I have serious doubts about him taking this team to the promised land. But in this group of 7, I suppose he's in 3rd place for me. Mr. big head is 4th. But he's yesterday's news and will cost us too much in draft capital, which is why I have him 4th. I could get behind Sean, but only if the draft capital is reasonable. 1.12 BUT...with a pick back, like their 3rd. Or you can have 2.2. Still...I'd rather have Ryans straight up even on an apples to apples comparison. Ryans is a star HC in the making.

After that list of 4, I'm telling the other 3, thanks for the interview but we're not interested at this time.
Only read first few sentences. Josh Allen looked bad his first two years and then just took off. A lot of Phili fans wanted Hurts gone after his second year. Good thing they gave him one more chance.

I can't see that being the case for the Texans. Unless they are talking about our STs guys. I'd like to keep Frank Ross and his assistants, but I think we should replace all of the others.

Interesting that Pep turned down an OC interview this week. Frank Ross would be a good keep, though.

Also, we need to consider that Josina was playing for team "DePredator".

What will it take to just wipe the coaching staff clean???

Interesting. I suppose it could be Pep forcing the Texans to buy out his remaining contract and he can watch his son play high school football on their dime.

But sounds like the new HC will have their staff picked out for them mostly (again) :(

Both Allen and Hurts showed improvement after their rookie seasons and that improvement has continued. If anything, Mills showed regression year 2. In no way, shape, or form are these the same.

So just to be clear yes I’m all in for Kafka, but I’m not optimistic, I’m not cautiously optimistic, I’m pessimistic about Kafka becoming the Texans HC. Why? Because there 4 other empty HC jobs available. It’s another case of thanks, but no thanks. I think it is impressive that he just interviewed on Sunday and the 2nd interview is on Tuesday. The Evero interview maybe for a future DC.
Texian, I get Kafka's offensive chops and QB development and would love him as OC, but what do you see in the way he talks and acts that make him look like a leader of men? I don't feel any energy, or charisma that people need to get folks to follow through walls. Not saying I need rah rah, but this guy is so milk toast vanilla, I would not follow him passionately in the work place much less in a sports franchise. The way you communicate at that level is key to me

If Pep is the OC next year it is time to start handing out the pink soap - Fire Caserio.

Is he worth losing the candidate you want for the HC opening?

If Ryans, or Kafka, or any of the others want to clean house totally; why not let them.

The Texans made this mistake last time, and if they make it again…there is no hope for them being other than the doormat of the AFC South
I would ask the candidates in the interviews if they would have an issue with keeping Ross on staff. If they had a problem with this then I would ask them who they had in mind for the position. Keeping Ross wouldn't be a deal breaker for me.

Gannon and Ross have history together, so if Gannon is the hire then there's no issues.

OK but Andy Reid does not seem to share your concerns. Brian Daboll doesn't share your concerns. The Giant players on offense don't seem to share your concerns. In fact, the Giant players appear to respond rather well to Mike Kafka's demeanor.

What do I see? He's smart, probably the only candidate who was recruited by Stanford. An honor student. He got his degree in Communication Studies so he knows how to communicate with people;

Communication studies or communication science is an academic discipline that deals with processes of human communication and behavior, patterns of communication in interpersonal relationships, social interactions and communication in different cultures.

Kafka is a good communicator.

Zac Taylor is also a former college QB who also has a degree in communication studies.

Not to worry, I highly doubt Kafka is going to agree to Caserio picking his coaching staff and agreeing to run Caserio's X and Os systems.

I seriously doubt Caserio picks any of these HC's staffs. He may ask the candidates if they would consider keeping Ross on the staff. I doubt if one of the candidates doesn't want to keep Ross on staff that this would be a deal breaker, particularly since Janice/ Cal hire the HC's.

I wonder if the next HC is going to have as loud of a voice in the draft/FA as Lovie had. This undercuts the GM's ability to do his job, especially if Janice/Cal refuses to hire the HC that Caserio recommends Janice/Cal hire.

Nothing has changes in the last 2 decades in the way the meddling McNair's run their franchise. Their model of how to run a franchise will never lead to bringing a championship to Kirby. At least Bob McNair had great business accumen. Right now the Texans orgs big decisions like hiring a GM/HC are being made by an 85 yr old housewife and her mentally challenged son. SMH

This is a rather easy peasy. Nick Caserio is setting the table in Houston just like he did in NE. Except now he's doing it for Cal instead of Belichick. Nothing has really changed. If the new HC insists on final say on the roster including the draft and Cal agrees, that is the way it will be and Caserio will do what he does best and set the table. There is nothing in Caserio's history to suggest he knows how to build a roster, manage the salary cap, negotiate contracts, and manage a franchise. This HC search cycle has exposed this with Payton's comments to Cowherd about a zoom call circus and Anderson's tweet about dysfunctional front offices.

Thanks, helps me understand better. I admit we only see snippets of these guys, and it so far has not resonated with me. I respect the guy and resume, just have done a lot of leadership roles and training and he does not fit the stereotype in the snippets I see which to be fair is not a good judge. Without being in the interviews, we are all making a call without too much information. I still like the list and only Brown would truly make me go ah crap

With a new HC who appeared to be a dink and dunk passing game. I can see why any QB would regess. Again, Mills is not Brady or Manning, but he also could be much better with a better OC. If they for some reason keep Pep, they better only have him working with QBs. I think that's the only reason why Mills went backwards. I could be wrong but what he did in the last game seemed like it was Lovie telling him to play loose and that the game plan was designed by someone NOT named Pep. Seeing it looked totally different from what we had seen to that game this season

I wouldn't give you a 1923 wooden nickel, and no GM worth a damn is either. Maybe a 6th, and that's pushing it.
Funny, I remember hearing the same thing about Case Keenum......yet, Rams GM did come forward and gave the Texans a RD7 for him.

Pray we get Meco but Kafka is a good 2nd or 3rd child. I think Meco would delegate OC and DC positions. I'm ok with that. Meanwhile, Kafka being an offensive coach is what I feel we need. Meco is smart and knows that he is better coaching D. Maybe like I heard on a podcast- Meco as HC/D and we bring in a guy like Kubiak to run the offense and be an advisor to Meco for a couple years. Allowing Meco to get better at the offensive side of the ball. I think Kubiak would be happy to be in that role as well. The guys on 610 also mentioned this situation if Meco is selected as HC

He needs to trademark that, has a nice ring to it......"Kool Aid Brigade"

That doesn't make any sense.

We pass on a couple of successful offensive co-ordinators, hire a defensive co-ordinator to be our new HC, , and bring in a former coach to teach our new coach how to run an offense.

Sounds like a Texans thing.:(

And some thought hiring McCown would be stupid.

I wonder how many people here would want Demeco had he played for the Cowboys and not the Texans.
He'd still likely be my first choice, but my familiarity with him just makes my choice that much more solid. Knowing first-hand his personality, his drive and determination, his ability to teach, to motivate...and guys look up to him. This is a rock star pick that will be the best HC this team has ever had IF he is given the tools, the talent, and the runway to succeed.

Like all new coaches, I'm sure he'll mess the bed a few times early in his career, but I expect a relatively smooth transition. The Texans would be absolute fools to pass on him, assuming Demeco is interested...as it appears. He's my choice by a country mile.

I think Pep isn't interested in other OC positions. His son is a sophomore in high school. and already has offers from Texas A&M and another school, so I don't think Pep wants to go anywhere. I think he'd rather be fired, and paid, than take a job somewhere else, and have to move his family.

Yet Caserio had a really good draft and has the 7rh most cap space in the NFL, with the ability to easily create 30-35 mil more in cap space if needed.

Really, I don't understand why Cal even hires a GM if he's not going to follow his recommendations. No wonder the org is where it's at right now.

Do they have free refreshments?
Yes, Bulgarian goat milk. But you have to squeeze it out yourself. 🐐

As silly as it sounds now, Watson v Mahomes was debatable during that draft season. Mahomes was considered as having a really low floor because of bad habits even if he had the highest QB ceiling in that draft. In a lot of ways, Watson was the safer of the two, but still had plenty of flaws.

"Lacking Elite Talent" sounds really familiar to the 2023 discussion.
Funny thing is Mitch Trubisky was rated higher than both of them before the draft.

Which is why I don't put a lot of stock in Bryce Young being rated so high right now.

Pre-draft predictions seem to miss more than they hit.

I like Ryans, he's a leader, players go to war for guys like Ryans, he can build the rest of his staff and let them go to work. He reminds me a lot of Tomlin and not because their both AA but almost the same age, (36 and 38) couple years as a DC and now getting a shot to be a HC because they are seen as leaders and we've seen what Tomlin has accomplished even with lesser talent lately. Ryans doesn't have the early SB as a DC that Tomlin has but there are some similarities. Just my 2 cents on Ryans.
I like the comparisons to Tomlin, but he inherited a much better team and a vastly better organization that Demeco would with the Texans. That would be my primary concern.

😁 I get the jest.. but Tom Brady was already crapping his NFL Depends by the time (())'Brien came on board.
I heard yesterday that O'Brien is the only OC that Brady did not win a SB with at NE. :hmmm:
