Because this stuff is a crap shoot, you probably ought to get somebody who has at least been through the ringer, the grind, and all of that jazz, not somebody who's never ******* done it.Remember that one time we hired the best name HC that was out there? What was his name?
Oh that’s right! Bill O’Brein. He was lauded by experts as the best pick for HC that season.
This stuff is a crap shoot.
This isn’t an endorsement for McCown.
But I am just saying.
Because this stuff is a crap shoot, you probably ought to get somebody who has at least been through the ringer, the grind, and all of that jazz, not somebody who's never ******* done it.
Yes, there's tons of people with a ton more experience, who have fallen flat on their faces. Everybody keeps bringing up those names in the "non-endorsement" of McCown. But I have yet to see all of the coaches who've been successful who didn't have a lick of experience and were given the top coaching job there is. I don't know, maybe that list is so vast it's still being compiled, so the wait continues.
I just think it's amazing watching people so desperate for their team to do something right and have success, trying to spin and justify this bullshit with McCown. It's the dumbest ******* thing I've ever seen. And I'm beginning to think Caserio thinks it is too, which is why McCown hasn't been hired yet. I think, I hope, there might be some head butting going on between him and the Pastor on this.
Does anyone here remember all the sports talk we heard when out of the blue with hardly a resume, kliff Kingsbury got hired?
Stay in this era please. Who has Mike Brown hired in the last 10 yrs? How many 30 yr olds did they sign once they fired Lewis? Simple questionMike Brown has made plenty of questionable HC hires over the yrs. (Ever hear of David Shula?) Plenty of other ones since then too. I expect the Texans to be true contenders within the next 4 yrs. Maybe even sooner if Derrick can beat the rap and the Texans get the type of talent Badboy/OT think Caserio's going to get in a trade. (Highly unlikely) hope I'm wrong.
Burrow is the key to their success, but having weapons like Mixon/Chase/Boyd/Higgins/Uzomah certainly helps. I'm hoping this offseason Caserio can put a few weapons like this around Mills as well. I would love to see a guy like Pickens or Ross added to the WR corps and find a TE/RB as well as adding a couple of FA/draft picks to help the OL.
This can be done in 1 FA/Draft yr.
What makes you think that I think Caserio can do no wrong? I've pointed out things I would do differently like hiring O'Connell or Lombardi, re-signing DJ etc...
Just because I think Mills is the future and I like the draft/FA strategy Caserio had last offseason doesn't mean I'm a fanboy of his. It means I'm willing to give him a couple of full drafts/FA periods before I begin to judge him. Obviously your mind is already made up. You can disagree with how Culley was treated. 21 mil has a way of letting bygones be bygones. He was never made to be the long term answer and you cant seem to accept this.
Dan Quinn is from Carroll as well as the dude who was in Jax. Doug Pedersen did win a superbowl. I get your point.it’s relative really. Reid’s tree looks good from the standpoint of initial overall success but only 2 of his guys are still currently employed (Harbaugh/McDermott).
Belichick’s tree looks dismal, & his guys have only seemed to thrive under him. But all of his guys are coming back up for 2nd opportunities now so we’ll see how it goes.
i dont believe any of Pete Carrollguys have even got a HC gig…& he’s been in place for damn near 15 years.
Harbaugh is 0-1 if you count Culley under his tree
What do you consider true contender?Mike Brown has made plenty of questionable HC hires over the yrs. (Ever hear of David Shula?) Plenty of other ones since then too. Pep?McVay called all of the offensive plays...........O'Connell will need a strong OC
I think Caserio can add 2-4 FA's like Thomas/KGH/Smith a yr, while adding 2 star level players plus 2 long time solid starters from the draft each yr for the next 2 yrs. Maybe even more depending on how the Derrick fiasco turns out. Bottom line is this will all workout fine if Caserio hits on Mills and I like what I've seen from Mills so far. Do you?
Not everybody wants to leave in FA like you suggest. Thomas/Smith have already re-signed and KGH/Kirksey/Martin have said they want to re-sign. Things aren't as bad as the media are making them out to be. IMHO
No on free agents. Free agents worth a damn are what you start doing big when your on the brink. We are 2 really good off-seasons away from anything worthwhile.
This can be done in 1 FA/Draft yr.
Now, it sounds like you guys are saying we need more than 1 FA/Draft year.
Eventually I hope things will normalize, but I'm not holding my breath. It's a lot easier to lose your reputation than to then rebuild it.That's what I'm saying and only if Mills evolves.
Bum Phillips described the type coach a long time ago that I want.Good question.
Is there a GM out there who is notorious for hiring really good coaches and coaching staff?
It's a lot easier to lose your reputation

"He could take his'n and beat yours and yours and beat his'n."

You are jumping to conclusions about what people posts. I don’t know if you are looking for some sort of validation or every time scream in the streets with you that McCown is a bad choice. Or if you want to be the guy that says I told you so. There are plenty on the board so join the crowd.
I said upstream that the HC for the Bengals had several years of coaching experience prior to becoming a HC. You repeated what I said and added some adverbs. But it’s pretty much the same post. At the end you added McCown had not. Well - yea that was part of my point.
I was thinking it shouldn’t be this hard finding a coach. Go with the best candidate and be done. Then that reminded me of OB. Which made me think the best option may not be what is best. You don’t know until you know.
That’s why I said it wasn’t a endorsement for McCown. Because I didn’t want people to jump to conclusions that is what I was saying.
But here we are. You jumped. Twice.
Full disclosure - I didn’t want Caserio. I wanted Dorsey. I wanted nothing to do with NE. I will give him the benefit of the doubt though for another 2 drafts.
If they are going to be Patriots South go all the way. It only makes sense to hire a person with NE connection. McDaniels, as much as that guy is a **** head, is my first choice. He is gone. So then Mayo or Flores. Or someone that has been in the NE circle and know that way of life. IMHO it would be a mistake to do otherwise. McCown doesn’t make sense unless Caserio wants the control and Easterby the culture.
Just don’t jump to conclusions about posts.

Please clarify. So in 4 yrs you expect the Texans to be in the AFC championship game. Am I quoting you correctly?I would say a team like the Bills/Chiefs/Bengals.
Teams that you feel like if they play well they will win. Not something like when the Pats used to slap the crap out of the Texans every yr and the best you could hope for was to keep the score close and get lucky at the end.
Wasn't great. But better than whatever it is now. What was their reputation?

Moving the goalposts again. What you're doing is trying to prescribe antibiotics without knowing the problems. My argument is your coach should always be viewed as your longterm coach whether you're rebuilding or not. There were coaches who would've taken the job as long as they were allowed to do their job. What does that mean? Control of the 53, hire their own coaches, and being the leader of the franchise. When the quality coaching prospects realized that wasn't going to be the case, you get David Culley, the puppet. Even when he came out of the blue and it was between he and Frazier, Frazier backed out because they already had Lovie signed up as DC. If you know anything about Frazier and Lovie relationship, you knew Culley hiring was bs. So now Jack Caserio is on his 2nd coach already. How many coaches did Smith get? Just to note, I hope it works out, I guess we will see in 4 years.I'm guessing Taylor,
He let Lewis hang around in mediocrity for a decade, then hired a young guy. Kind of like what I hope Caserio does after the Culley hire. Anyway if you think hiring a 65 1st time HC was a long term move. Then we will just have to agree to disagree and I'm going to move on.
I expect them to play like the Bills did even though they didn't reach an AFCCG.
But you already know this because you read my previous post and now are just being contradictory.
Bills made the afccg last year correct?I expect them to play like the Bills did even though they didn't reach an AFCCG.

For realIf the question was generalized as 'who thinks it's a good idea for a team to hire a head coach with no coaching experience?' - we'd make fun of any other team considering it. But now that the goofballs running this team come up with the idea and hey, maybe it's not such a bad idea. Weird.
Maybe McCown doesn't get the job and they make a great hire. Still doesn't change the fact that someone is goofy enough down there to keep pushing for it. And that someone obviously has a lot of sway.
Scariest part is the report that Cal was the one with the sense to not hire McCown last year. You know you're in trouble when Cal is the smartest guy in the room.
If the players don't respect the coach, your organization is dead, which was the Texans last year. Jack and Nick better make the hire as if their football lives depends on it. I mean they couldn't even get an interview with Daboll or McDaniels. Two guys they have alot of history with. Does that not say something? What does this have to do with RS? This just in Bob McNair is dead.
Is this about RS not getting to pick the HC and Caserio getting to pick his? If so, LMAO
And no Culley never was a long term option. He wasn't hired for that reason You may not like it, but I'm pretty sure Caserio doesn't care want we think. He's going to run this org the way he sees fit. This HC hire is very important and I bet Caserio goes the safe route and hires Flores. Not what I would do, but I'm still going to be a Texans fan and hope I'm wrong.
Yes that scheme is fun to watch. Give me O’Connell or Mike McDaniel, offensive coordinator, San Francisco 49ers.Best possible scenario. Don't know why he would take the job. I'm sure there will be better offers, now or down the line. Just hope this happens.
Hiring a NFL player straight out of retirement to a head coaching position hasn't been done in over 60 years (Norm Van Brocklin in 1961). That should tell you a lot, right there. And they can't show much beyond team speeches on Hard Knocks because teams don't want to let their opponents know the actual X's & O's of the game plans.
Ask yourself why only the Texans are considering a head coach with zero coaching experience. This isn't a sitcom on Apple TV. This is real life team in a $multi-billion business. Who does business like this?
Texans just concluded an interview with Rams OC Kevin O'Connell per 610
He's really low on my list .... That team is loaded with talent on both sides of the ball and has used 6 first round picks in the last two years in trade. They don't have a #1 until 2024.
They got where they are on talent more than anything else.
McDaniels is off the table. Who are you endorsing?
This is the guy who had people quit their jobs to join him in Indianapolis than backed out. Like Matt Eberflus. Luckily for those guys Indy let them even though Josh dodged his commitment.
I am glad Josh McDaniels was hired by someone else. I didn't want him. There is just something about him that doesn't sit right with me. I wanted Hackett, but he's gone too. My next choice would be O'Connell or a
Bum Phillips described the type coach a long time ago that I want.
"He could take his'n and beat yours and yours and beat his'n."
It was about Shula.I think he was referring to Don Shula at the time but I'm not 100% sure on that.
You're quote is not exact, but very, very, close. But I'm pretty sure he was talking about Shula. Maybe someone as old or older than me can confirm.
