Hall of Fame Game Aug 1 2024

Hall of Fame Game featured eight kickoffs, one touchback, a long return of 31 yards

The NFL’s new kickoff rules were put to the test for the first time Thursday night.

The Texans and Bears met in the Hall of Fame Game, with everyone watching the great kickoff experiment. One of the most entertaining Hall of Fame Games in memory ended because of inclement weather with 3:31 left in the third quarter. The Bears won 21-17.

The teams combined for eight kickoffs, with only one resulting in a touchback, though two other kickoffs reached the end zone and could have been downed for touchbacks. The receiving team takes over at its own 30-yard line after a touchback.
Of the seven kickoffs returned, the average starting position was the 25.6-yard line.

The longest return was a 31-yarder by Bears receiver John Jackson.

Each team had an illegal formation penalty, both of which were declined.

Texans punter Tommy Townsend held the ball on the tee for kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn to start the third quarter, with Townsend running off the field as soon as the ball was kicked.

It gave teams around the league a first look at what is supposed bring a dead play back to life, and it likely will be a work in progress for awhile as teams try to figure out what works and what doesn’t.
I don't hate the new kick off format, like I thought I would. It actually promotes more runbacks instead of just downing it in the end zone. However, I think that teams will figure out blocking schemes that will result in long gains. Once the returner is past the first wave, there is only the kicker.

I thought Bullock looked like a solid tackler throughout the game, which is pretty good based on his (quote/unquote) reputation. There was a touchdown in the endzone where he was around, but it's hard to tell if that was his assignment or if he flowed there after someone else missed their assignment.

The middle of the defensive line was very weak and the gap assignments with the LBs left enormous running lanes. The bears run game dominated us. Hopefully that's a second/third team issue, but I'd still like to see some lane discipline.

Of course, the result of the game is just film material. I'm hoping that the 2nd/3rd team gets coached up and shows improvement over the course of the preseason.

It’s over?

Hutch had a nice showing.

Both Mills and Case combined for 77.3% completion percentage, 8.2 Y/A, 2 TD, no picks.
Still, you don’t want to see either past August, and you still can’t sell me on Mills being an adequate backup. Sure, he looked good against lesser talent, but dude still has just 5 wins in 26 starts. Could be easier for him with the firepower around him now, but I’d have to see it first, and again, I don't want to see either of those guys past August unless they’re finishing off a blowout game.

Though the run game was a zero (2.6 YPC), I liked what I saw of Akers. Doesn’t appear the Achilles will be an issue.

Caleb Bullock is the only one who stood out to me on defense.

And that’s about it. D gave up 5.7 YPC, and allowed 3 Bears QBs to complete 75% of their passes with 3 TD and no picks, and they allowed the Bears to zoom down the field in 58 seconds at the end of the 1st half.

Just one day closer to Sep. 8.

I didn't finish this post.. Keenum is our 3rd string QB and he's 36 years old.. chances of him ever pushing for a serious regular backup role here (Mills here or not) are zero. They should be trying to find someone who can replace that role who is younger with potential, and has a chance to replace him.

I respect the heck out of Keenum and would rather see him join the coaching staff (He's a coach's son.), with Slowik leaving, I'd rather see him on that side of the staff. That is never going to happen with bringing in QBs like Boyle who are 29 yo camp arms.. who stink. How many good practice reps do we even get out of him?

Regardless, I bet you Case ends up on our staff somewhere after this season.
Slowick leaves eventually replaced by Jerrod Johnson who is replaced by Case Keenum?

Hannah asked me to give you this. I think you know what to do with it.

I would have one of the players lined up at the 40 in the center drop back when the ball is in play to be sort of a free safety in case runner gets loose. I don't want my kicker to be the only stop gap for a long run.

Regarding those ‘dynamic’ kickoffs, I think when most, if not all, teams when they get done evaluating, they’ll just say screw that noise and tell the kicker to kick it out of the end zone and spot it on the 30.

Edit: if they want to change the kickoffs all that much, they should eliminate it all together.

These have been recommendations since 2006....................I have confirmed that Soldier Field pathetically does not have adequate lightning protection built-in or added on.

When lightning threatens an outdoor activity, it is usually postponed so that people may seek a safe location. When lightning threatens a large outdoor stadium, the game or event itself is usually postponed, but it is often difficult to ensure the safety of tens of thousands of spectators. Although stadiums may employ a general evacuation plan, complete evacuation is often counterproductive for efficient lightning safety. Outdoor events, which fill stadiums to capacity, are at the highest risk because there is little room for people to move and crowd panic becomes a real possibility. Lightning safety recommendations exist for both players and spectators during outdoor activities, however, most venues do not have a lightning action plan. This study recommends that stadiums and other outdoor venues develop a lightning action plan, which should include continuous education for stadium personnel, players, and spectators about the proper actions to take should lightning threaten a venue. The action plan should also distinguish safe locations within the venue that could provide shelter for players and spectators and delineate responsibility to stadium personnel for crowd management. Further, stadiums should consider the use of additional air terminals and caternaries (lightning rods and shield wires) to protect not just the stadium infrastructure from a lightning strike, but the entire spectator area as well.

Now about the game last night, my takeaway was John Metchie.

Like where TF was he? I keep hearing that he’s tearing it up in camp, he’s faster than he’s ever been, blah blah. He suited up and was on the field like Hutchinson was, but I never his name called. I heard he was only targeted twice? Why? He couldn’t get open like Hutchinson did??

Or, were they just showcasing Hutchinson so they can get a 7th for him? That would PISS ME TF OFF!

I don’t think that’s the “case”. Why would she give me a case for birth control pills unless she wants me to refill them again and give them back to Lucky so he can give them back to her. Wow the things pretty younger women are always asking me to do 🦸‍♂️💪

Not sure why you trade Mills. I agree with the person who said you aren’t trading him for a 4th. Best you get for Mills is a 5th. He did make some mild improvements over last preseason, but still went brain dead a few times. He was more accurate at times…then wasn’t so much. He is a #2 in this league and they could do better next year. For this year, keep him. If he walks, he walks. Let someone else overpay him.

If the Texans know they don’t want to resign him you don’t let him walk, you trade him during the year if/when some team gets desperate. He will be interesting to watch this preseason.

For me…Arrows up

Hutch
Cam Akers
Fischer
Juice
Kenyon Green
Broeker (inside outside flexibility)
Mills (small up arrow)
Cade Stover
Calen Bullock
Ben Storonek (sp)

Arrow down…
Metchie - if you are looking for a shocking camp cut, look here. He most likely makes it…but if Hutch keeps outplaying him in these games, it could get really interesting.
Quinton Tarantino - he played well…then gets hurt. I haven’t seen a diagnosis, but there’s something they call guys that can’t stay healthy - insurance salesman.
3rd team oline as a whole
Secondary and LB not named Bullock and to a lesser degree Ford.

And if CJ gets hurt you are ok rolling out an elderly Case? And then who backs up Case when he goes down? Boyle? Someone off the street? No way Jose. The juice isn’t worth the squeeze. Now if some team is stupid and says I will give you a second…I’ll take my chances but that’s a pipe dream.

League is saying Teagan suffered a knee injury but didn’t give more detail. BTW shouldn’t Dare Ogumbuwale be on your list? Nobody has mentioned him but I thought he had a good game.

I’m pretty sure these questions will be in clearer focus near year end. There is plenty of time to upgrade the roster.

Case's arm was never great to begin with................his arm now is weaker. At this point in time, even with Mills having occasional lapses, he has improved and is much more consistent and better equipped in this scheme if Stroud is injured.

1. The one handed catch by Skowronek that was behind him was incredible.
2. Cam Akers looks like he can play.
3. Back up QB's looked good (against lesser talent).
4. WR room is going to be one of the best in the league.
With his bilateral Achilles rupture history, I would have to consider this early small sample look fool's gold. Certainly, given a little more time, a perfect setup for re-injury/compensatory injury.

It was a bar of soap
Thanks. He…couldn’t get a handle on the scale of that thing. Plus What’s up with that plastic looking base? If it’s a soap tray why is it form fitting? But that was a good retort.

And Mills has had good preseason games before. Is there a point?

If CJ goes down I don’t think it really matters. Though Case has winning experience, he is older, and no one else has proven they can win.

Like I said, Mills has had PS games where the stats look good, but last night both teams were very vanilla with their pass rush. That catch Skowronek made was a bad throw. There were consecutive plays where he made a nice connection with Hutch but on the very next play he should have been picked. And wasn’t there another that was floated that could have been a pick 6? Might have been Case though, don’t remember.

Point is, if CJ goes down, the QBs currently on this roster aren’t taking this team anywhere.

If the Texans are serious about competition and making a real push at a Superbowl, then Metchie probably should be cut...I'm actually not sure that it would be all that shocking if he is let go...other than because of where he was drafted.

I count 6 or 7 guys that look like they'd provide more value for this season as a wr and/or special teams.

On the first kick off return for the Texans....I'd like to see them put a couple back up offensive linemen out there. Lots of smallish guys out there trying to block. At least give me some TE, FB types...I know with the amount of space they want guys that can move and cut guys off, but once they make contact they don't know how to hold their blocks. I'd like to see some bigger bodies out there that are used to blocking guys just to see how it looks.

A few plays in now and Kenyon Green is moving really well. Fisher looks solid as well. They are handling business on that left side. Juice looks nice also. Looks like they have a guy listed as a guard playing RT Nick Broeker and he looks good as well. Kendrick Green not looking too shabby at RG either. Not sure if this is due to the level of competition they are facing but they look good. Mills being decisive with the ball is helping a lot too.

First TD throw the left side of the line absolutely stonewalled the pass rush. Gave up almost no ground. Mills had a very clean pocket and had plenty of time. It looked like all the receiving options were open except Metchie. But he ran off screen so it's hard to tell if he got open late...But doesn't look like it. Mills made decision with the ball though. Others would have been a slightly more difficult pass, and/or may not have resulted in a TD. Initially looked like he was wanting to throw the short curl to his left, but decided against it and came back to his right and found Quitoriano. Q looked good on this drive/TD as well. He moves really well for being the biggest TE on the roster.

Texans kickoff...We look like we have a sharper special teams unit than the Bears...We look more crisp and decisive.

First play Bears bust it up the gut...The DT's (Hinish and Khalil Davis I think) look like they are doing what Demeco wants, which is to penetrate up field and attack. This isn't a read and react defense. BUT, they both ran out of talent when it came time to make a play on the ball carrier. The DT's in this aggressive upfield style should play the run on the way to getting up field. Due to the nature of how they play they are probably going to be a bit more susceptible to giving up yards in the run game. Fatukasi is the biggest DT on the Roster so I'm curious to see how they look against the run with him in the game.
Barnett was the playside DE on that side as well. He didn't do anything to help either. Was easily blocked and made 0 impact on that run.

Now the LBers didn't help at all either. Phillips got blocked without any resistance. Hansen over ran it just a bit, but folded back inside and made the tackle. Bullock did come down from his FS spot and help put the finishing touches on the tackle.

So Cam Akers, who actually looked painfully slow, gets kudos for looking good against 3rd stringers yet Mills doesn’t sell you as a decent backup?

Perhaps it was the injury history of Acres compared to that of meals.

I heard it said this morning that what Davis Mills does well, he improved on Thursday. What he has historically not done well, he maintained that level.

Weird thought of the day. That new kickoff rule scares me. If the returner busts through that wave of tacklers there’s only Fairbairn back there to save the day. Less than ideal for multiple reasons. We have seen that Dare has a good leg. I realize it’s a long shot and would require a crap ton of training and repetition but could Dare be the primary kickoff specialist? I’d rather see him as the last line of defense than Fairbairn.

Ps - I already hate the new rule. It sucks donkey balls, but it is what it is.

Defense ends up getting the stop on the first series. Marcus Harris made a nice play to stop the run on third down. Bears were going to go for it on fourth but a penalty pushed them back and they end up punting.

2nd series looks like they brought in a new RG. Reed. Davis with the really nice juke to buy time and find Skrownek down field but with the awful throw on the next play.
Next play after looks like Mills had Metchie open for a big gain but throws short to Hutchinson for a short gain. Looks like maybe he didn't think he could get the ball up over the DE that dropped into coverage to hit Metch. I think this is maybe an example of a decision/throw that separates someone from Mills from someone like CJ. I think CJ gets that ball to Metchie for the big gain down the middle.

Ended up with a field goal. The running game was nothing to write home about. Mills had some good moments and overall looked like a vet with good control of the game.
