Why worry about Peters picking off a fresh rookie QB in his first start? Are you not watching the Bengals run the ball all over the field? Over 100 yds in the first half, with no passing game to compliment it. And I'll take Houston's run attack over Cincy's 11 times out of 10. I'm watching this game thinking Houston could have a huge running day, keeping Jackson on the sidelines.

I would think Baltimore gameplan is keep Watson on sidelines. I really look forward to texans Run D v ravens rush offense. Gonna be fun stuff.

Definitely going to be fun. I'm wanting to see both teams running the F out of the ball all game long, and see who comes out on top. I'm betting on a fast, low scoring, tight game.

I think the Houston run game feasts on BAL D. If they do, play action is going to be good for some shots as well.

I'm ready to fast forward to next week.

Who wouldn’t be? He plays him next week? It’s going to be a exciting game.

But dw plays with that chip on his shoulder a undrafted superstar free agent plays with. I think Ljs the same. Dw truly feels he’s the best player in his draft class so having 11 guys go before him pushes his drive even more. I think Watson will show the world whose the better passer. Lj is a faster runner, sure. Throws a beautiful spiral but he lacks something that Watson has...

That is what is most baffling. I love Watson as well. Not as much as you guys I'm sure, but I don't have to make stuff up to make Lamar seem better.

Watson's accomplishments are enough, he doesn't need some crazy mental gymnastics to make him better than another. Watson and Lamar are to future of the AFC so let's just see how it plays out instead of making stuff up
 
Texans have no one who is athletic enough that can tackle LJ in the open and perhaps one on one, but that's not just us that's a problem for most of the NFL. The Ravens OL is strong in the run. The defense MUST play discipline and the defensive front must be stout. This is the one game where the d-line needs to play lights out and with pressure. I would absolutely take away Lamar's primary read and commit to stopping the run.
 
I think it's going to start with discipline against the zone read. Backside defender can't crash down allowing Jackson into the open field.

You’re right. I haven’t watched him this season enough yet. After all, they just beat Brady so maybe I’m wrong. I thought I praised him well enough. I said he throws beautiful spirals. He was a beast in college and I know he has that dawg in him but he still lacks some key intangibles and I’m glad he has a good defense to bail him out unlike Mahomes and Watson. It’s really going to help him grow. I honestly believe people have it confused with the best rivalry in the afc to come. I think it will be Lj and Watson instead of Mahomes.

As for LJ - I wasn't sold in the early part of the season , said he was just another running QB who couldn't pass.

He's making me eat my words week after week …. Dude can flat out play football. He's not your typical QB , he's a real oldschool football player …. playing QB. Its almost like watching a highschool game - the best athlete on the field is the QB - that's not the norm in the NFL.


Have to give Harbaugh a hell of a lot of credit for building an offense around LJ's talents rather than trying to make him fit into an offense that doesn't suit him - We've had just that here in Houston for most of Watson's starts and its ugly to watch. Most of us cant stand OB.

It will be very hard for any one defender to stop Jackson. The defense will have to seal his running routes off and take him by committee. Take his lanes away from him and attack before he can take off.
They will have to be disciplined to the extreme to seal the edges and keep Jackson from bouncing outside. They will have to funnel him into the middle of the Texans defense where they are very strong against the run. Jackson will continuously run into a wall if the Texans can keep him contained.

Posted a perfect passer rating but on 17 attempts for 220 yards. He has a great game, but it was backed up by 2 defensive TD’s and little scoring threat by the opposing QB.
This will be a tough game and Lamar is doing great, but isn’t infallible. If the D can take away the big play through the air and slow him somewhat on the ground, then we can put the game in Watson’s hands.
I worry about using Reid as a spy vs Jackson, he may well be the most favourable matchup we have but when Jackson is at full speed in the open field is his shoulder going to hold up all game?

Cunningham isn't anywhere near fast enough to spy Lamar Jackson. It has to be a db, and a fast db at that.

They can't stop him individually. They'll have to play disciplined football and plug the gaps. Gap integrity and sealing the edge will be of utmost importance. Then attack him by committee and converge on him from every direction. Not one on one.

Texans can not have a slow, conservative start to this game or they could find themselves down by 14-17 points by the half and that would be fatal.
They must come out and play with full enthusiasm.
Ravens rush more than any other team in the league and this has been in the past something of a problem for Watson. Yes, he is getting the ball out faster these days but OB is gonna have to come up with a good game plan to defeat that fierce pass rush.
Ravens have not been solid against the run so a good dose of Hyde and Johnson is going to have to be a part of Texans success.
This is going to be a tough game and the team that wants it more will likely be the winner.
Tough one to predict here.
Looks like I have to eat my words here - before this week Ravens allowed the second fewest rushing yards in the league. Ouch.

I'm not eating mine. Jackson won't last as a starter in the NFL past 5 years. I still doubt that he is even upright by the playoffs. His injury is coming. I've seen this show one to many times, and that big hit will end all of that in one play. He takes to many chances running the ball, because he has to. He can't sit bak there and break teams down in the pocket. This is still a passer's league and it always will be. We'll always see guys like this have a good season or two running the ball half the time, but it never lasts unless they develop into really strong passers and Jackson simply doesn't have that type of arm that will once his athleticism isn't at the extreme that it is. An ACL surgery or some other injuries like that could stifle his future big time, because so much of his success on each down is based on his legs.

That being said. I do like him and he's fun to watch. I hope that he does develop long term based on the excitement of his performances. He seems like a good dude as well.
 
One thing is certain, our oline is going to have their hands full so they will have to play one of their best games.
We simply cannot give them any advantage with penalties - a very disciplined game is needed here.
Hopefully us being more refreshed will make a difference.
 
Its gonna have to be a team effort on defense the more i think about it. Crennel's most likely going to play some version of a contain... bend don't break defense where the edge guys will not be getting up field but will be setting the edge. We should also expect more zone coverage in the secondary. Can't have these guys playing man coverage with their backs turned on LJ.

Zach, B-Mack and Cole are going to have to hold down the middle & if this game is on anyone, its gonna be on those guys. Its going to be critical for them to man the middle & keep Ingram II & pearce in check on those zone reads & traps while Mercy & Scarlett try to prevent LJ from getting loose on the edges.

I like Jackson, I just don't think he's there as a passer......yet. Its also pretty obvious Harbaugh doesn't want him throwing too much...right around 20-25 times a game. Games where he's had to throw it more than that they are are only 3-2 in and his TD/int is 6/5. If you watch them play, they're usually boom or bust. It's either big explosive plays in the run game or over the top in the passing game, or its a bunch of short crossing route stuff...nothing really intermediate. LJ is typically 1 read & he's gone. In watching that Pats game, they got a lot of help. The Pats uncharacteristically didn't convert in the red zone........twice and they also had 2 critical TO's by Edelman and Brady of all people that led to 14 pts for them.

Where i think we can win this is if we can keep LJ on the sidelines by running the ball..they can definitely be had there...mostly on the edges but also in DW4 & his escapability. Unlike them, we have very credible threats on the outside & even in the backfield so i don't think spying DW4 will be an option for them. NE ate them up in the screen game as well.

Where i think we have the potential to lose it is if we can't keep LJ in relative check & force him into becoming primarily a passer...we want them desperate enough to abandon their run game which is what their offense is primarily based around. The other way I think we have the potential to lose this game is if we let them get too far out in front b/c b/c they are a fast starting team. We will either have to match them (which seeing as we've not scored a 1st qtr TD all season...:dontknowa ) or we will have to be just that much better on defense.

Either way though, it should be a good game. Can't believe it hasn't been flexed.

That's why you need more than 1 QB with this style if you're going to run this offense. He doesn't have to be the same type athlete Watson/Jackson is but he needs to have the same style.

Not necessarily. It seems that way, but there are plenty of situations where an opposite style QB comes in and does really well and it works to the benefit of that team, because now defenses have a totally different style QB to prepare and adjust to. Its really about the Oline you have in place and if they can help the new style of QB. Matt Schaub routinely came in for Michael Vick in ATL and usually always played well and gave their offense a new look. Big reason why we spent two 2nd rounders on him which felt like a lot at the time. Nick Foles would come in there and play well behind Michael Vick in Philly when Vick was still holding onto that starting job. Foles eventually took over that job after the team got to see him enough times while Vick was always getting sidelined from injuries in both of those cases. The Titans ended up going like 14-1 with Kerry Collins after having a highly mobile QB in VY which was a huge difference in style.

Also in contrast when a pocket passing QB goes down, and a super fast dual threat style QB comes in, sometimes that can also become a huge benefit to the offense, because defenses also have a hard time adjusting to that type of mobility and scrambling tactics without seeing it on film enough or not properly preparing their defense for those different threats throughout a game. I hear what you're saying though.
 
Heard that the stadium was shouting MVP for Lamar Jackson.

As others have said, I echo the statement that I can’t wait to see Watson show the world what he is capable of and who the real MVP is.

so many good/great NFL players were on that field when these teams played for all the marbles. Its a big component of what I value in a player - whether or not he's had to perform AND excel in these types of situations vs the cream of the crop competition-wise. Deshaun was also a day 1 starter as a freshman in high school which was a powerhouse team from Georgia and led that squad to a state championship as well.

Winners just know how to win. Lamar Jackson has alot of the same intangibles, he had a rough playoff game last year also and still has to show some postseason success like Deshaun has to. LJ strikes me more as a great "Playing in front" type QB which to me means he's awesome when the team is moving along, and everything is clicking and on time. He doesnt have many game winning drives or come from behind wins and I think that above all is what a great QB is all about, not just pure stats, but the ability to ALWAYS be able to bring the team back. Deshaun Watson has 7 game winning drives/4th quarter comebacks vs 2 for Lamar Jackson. Granted Deshaun has played a season more, but its still enough of a sample size to place a value on a "clutch" metric since in Deshauns first full season he accounted for 5 of those comebacks. Still some time for LJ to make ground on that niche stat, but its worth noting.

He is in San Diego. Or LA. Or London. Wherever that team is. The team is the Chargers. And just like a growing portion of California’s population - is searching for a new home.

I agree. He has the intangibles, no denying that. We still haven't seen how he faces adversity. Lamars father was killed when he was younger. Has a little brother that looks up to him and was drafted after 31 players. I think that puts a chip on anyone shoulders. The raven fans should be very happy right now. Top 10 defense that can bail lj out. Just beat brady and the pats. This is there window of opportunity with watson and mahomes having weak defenses at the moment. People were upset when I said mahomes wasn't a winner, I think he lost yesterday lol. I think Ljs a winner. I dont see how he dropped to 32. Kind of ridiculous if you ask me.

If none of the Texans defenders are fast enough to stop Lamar Jackson who runs a 4.3 something 40, how is it that they are able to stop speedy running backs who also run the 40 in the 4.3s?
That makes no since at all guys. They are plenty fast enough.
The Texans have the 3rd best run defense in the NFL. And that's going against some teams that have very good running games with very speedy running backs.
Just keep that in mind the next time you want to try and spew that negative garbage that is based on uneducated opinion and not fact.
Yes the Texans defense is fast enough and capable of slowing Lamar Jackson and the running game of the Ravens way down.

Stopping a scrambling QB vs. a designed run with an RB is a completely different animal to defend. It's the same reason teams fear Watson.

Sure, the Texans have the 3rd best run Defense...largely due to our abysmal Pass Defense being a much more inviting target.

This is just acceptance of who the Texans are and the opponent they face this week. It's not particularly "negative", and is based on sound facts.

Optimistic approach is great and you're right. But the Patriots run defense was either 1st or 2nd and they couldn't stop him. But like I stated earlier on, the Browns and Chiefs jumped on that ash early and won those games in dominant fashion. Jackson still got his though.
 
I think our front 7 is truly stout against the run. You can look at stats or look to see who slowed the best runners and the Texans did that to a hot Fournette, Jacobs etc. Agree running QB is different, and I think Addae can share the Chargers plan last year to more deeply understand then just tape. I do think they will make some plays, but I think Texans offense can run and pass over their defense so I expect Texans to get that extra stop or two to win the game. Penalties and turnovers probably big, so hope the mental aspect is cleaned up. I actually could see a blowout either way or a good game and not be shocked anymore in the NFL, but likely a pretty physical game with some long sustained drives so possessions will be critical. I like Texans red zone scoring, need 6 each crack down there
 
Some "light" reading for those guys who like to dive deep and see what historic or statistical principles can be applied when dealing with the biggest fear of the upcoming matchup - "mobile QB". I'm not as vexxed as some, because I think Baltimore's offensive style plays right into what the Texans LOVE to do defensively already ... 2 gap the hell out of the OL and play a zone blitz (think 3-5 alignment with the occasional CB blitz) Cover 4 where they keep everything in front. Hopefully Roby is back and his speed can be put on Hollywood Brown. The article alludes to the "old school" pitch responsibilites here, and some guys have already touched base on making sure Jackson is accounted for, and is reminded that when he's a runner - he's fair game. Not saying put a bounty on the guy, but I AM saying make him hurt every single time he is a runner. Anyway here you go:
