Game 5...Extreme test...Minnesota Vikings!

Eh... Vikings had 5 sacks against them the last time they played as well.

No doubt the offense has been a slow starter all year, but Week 1 was with Shaun Hill at QB. You may not like Bradford, but he's at least twice as good as Hill.
You should have been on this board when you guys gave up a 1st for Bradford. The folks who were saying you paid too much were the nice ones.
LoL
It made sense to me. Here's my post from back in Sept...
Would you like to be the GM who tells his fanbase (you know all those season ticket holders) we're just gonna sh*t-can this season (and maybe part of the next one) because *I* didn't want to pay the 1st and 4th for an experienced starter who could possibly salvage it?
I absolutely saw the necessity and logic in getting Bradford.

hmmmm, maybe I should bump that thread :D

How about your guys' thoughts on the matchup. Which areas do you see the Texans taking advantage of?

Our secondary is aiight. They're not going to allow many big plays. If we don't turnover the ball, Sam Bradford ain't going to dink & dunk a 70 yard drive on us.

I'm anxious to see how your LDE does against Newton (our RT). For the most part, he's strong enough to defend against any power rusher, but he's susceptible to a quick first step. Your (96 Robison) guy looks pretty strong, not particularly quick though. But when you sub in 99 (Hunter) it may start to look like a turnstile over there.

I really like our TE, Ryan Griffen. I don't understand why we don't target him up the seam more often. Hopefully the Texans will add that to the game plan, to keep your LBs honest, if nothing else, & create some room for our running game.

Haha I think it's still fair to say they overpaid. But what were they going to do? They lost their starting QB 10 days before their regular season opened up with a Super Bowl type roster (or fringe Super Bowl roster).

These windows are far and between (I know as a Vikings fan). The Browns wanted a 2nd and Anthony Barr level player for Mccown as did many other teams. Sam at least has some upside and youth.

They made the best of an awful situation. I would have watched the games, but all the buzz and momentum with the team and stadium was gone until that game against the Packers. Now, this will probably be one of the best three seasons in the last 20 years (98, 09, and now 16). They needed to make the first year in the new stadium a memorable one.

Robison has been a solid end for a while now, but Hunter is the guy to watch for. Robison is more luxury depth than anything. Hunter is just an animal. He and Griffen are relentless and you have Linval Joseph up the middle and Sebastian Thunderbucket.

Eh... I understood the move as well, but it's a little early to start tooting that horn. Bradford is injury prone. If he gets injured in the next few weeks & is out for the season, they spent a 1st & 4th for 4~6 weeks of Sam Bradford.... then they'll be like, "They should have known."

We're also getting into the part of the season where defenses are figuring out what offenses are all about. They know what offenses like to run in certain situations & they'll be ready for it... won't be falling for the banana in the tail pipe.

Bradford's been playing above his past history (as pointed out by Sandman). He will return to the mean.

I'm just saying I'd wait until Thanksgiving before the "I told you so" comes out.

look, it's this simple...

Ok. The Vikings defense is good in the middle of the field. They take that area away from an opposing offense. They cover the deep ball well. Stopping the run hasn't been a big point for them since they haven't had to really face a running game since the Titans. They get ahead and force an offense to pass. That plays right into the hands of that smothering defense.
So, quick short passes that get the ball out of Osweiler's hands quickly to avoid any rush and edge running plays that spread out the defensive front will be the key. Force their long and outside defenders to come inside and open up the outsides for Fuller and Hop.
That will open up the long field and maybe even those intermediate routes in the middle.
Dink and dunk to start. I know you guys hate to hear that, but the Vikings defense is susceptible to the short plays.
When they start working, it will bring the defense in and spread it out.
Basically, O'brien and Osweiler need to come in and be predictable at first, then open up the unpredictable plays.
Short stuff that opens up the long stuff.
On defense, the Texans just need to keep doing what they've been doing. The Vikings O-line hasn't faced a front 7 like this one yet.
Getting after Sam and hitting him allot will throw him off his rhythm. That's when he makes mistakes.
Put Clowney back at outside linebacker and when they line up in the 4-3 at the outside defensive end. That way he can seal the edge and rush the passer. Allow him space to rush the passer and he'll be unstoppable. Mercilus needs to be the nasty player he has been so far and just go after the passer on every down. Simon needs to play outside and stop their short passing attack. Bring Bouye in there to assist as he has been incredible at stopping those short dinks and dunks, especially against tight ends. Cushing needs to get confidence in his legs and just play his game. McKinney will be great in the middle against the run and slowing down the short passing attack of the Vikings.
Basically, it'll be how well the defenses play that determines this game. I think the Texans offense is just a shade better then the Vikings and the Texans defense is on the same level.
Special teams can not give the Vikings any breathing room. No turn overs to the Vikings in the red area. Down the ball in the endzone on kick offs. Don't risk and fumbles. On punt team, block and allow the runner some room to get yardage. If the Texans win the field position battle and don't give the ball away, it could be a big step towards a win.
It's going to be an exciting game to watch. Let's hope our Texans go in there to play.

GO TEXANS!!!

With Watt, you have a case. Without Watt, I'll gladly take the Panthers' front 7.

You are right on the offensive approach, though. That's pretty much the only choice you have. The Giants failed at it but doesn't mean the Texans will. I will say that the Vikings have two really fast linebackers in Barr and Kendricks. Zimmer also loves to mix up which player on the line is blitzing so you are somewhat susceptible to a quick turnover if you happen to throw it the wrong direction.

With Watt out, that simply means the other guys have to step up. This will be Antonio Smith's second game back from retirement. Don't count him out on making plays.

GO NINJA!

And quite frankly, Watt has been playing injured the first 3 games. He wasn't him self. He wasn't dominant at all as a matter of fact. Even still, the Texans defense has been great. The Vikings haven't faced a defense like this. 4 games and you've faced the Titans, Packers, Panthers and Giants. They all have decent Defenses, but, none are even close to the level of the Texans. Even without JJ.
I can't see that being even close to a factor.
Your defense is good. Our defense is good. Our offense is slightly better then yours.
It's going to be a close, hard fought game.

Funny, but that puts us just ahead of the Vikings by 2 spots.
So how true is it when it comes to this game?

No you stated that the Vikings haven't faced a defense close to the level of the Texans. Do you not even know what you posted?

This is what I bolded and and was responding to

In points per game Green Bay is better than ours, and the Giants and Panthers not far behind...

Let's talk defense then.

Yards Per Play Allowed:
Minnesota - 4th
Houston - 7th

Yards Per Rush Allowed:
Minnesota - 8th
Houston - 29th

Yards Per Pass Attempt Allowed:
Minnesota - 4th
Houston - 5th

Scoring Defense:
Minnesota - 2nd
Houston - 8th

Takeaways:
Minnesota - 1st
Houston - t-19th

Notice any outliers there?

A big part of the Vikings' defense has been the phenomenal Special Teams play. Jeff Locke is having his best year and Marcus Sherels and Cordarrelle Patterson are two of the best gunners in the game. Teams aren't getting any chance to field the ball. In fact, they caused that fumble against the Giants.

What does this even mean? Stats posted were defensive stats... you even read?

It's ok to be all rah rah but when you make outlandish comments then expect to be called on it

It's not all rah rah. The defenses are pretty close. The Vikings take the ball away better however. There is more of a separation on the offensive side of the ball.
The special teams are no contest. The Vikings are much better in that area. Izzo needs to address this and make some major adjustments.

Not sure it will be a huge difference, but Kyle Rudolph is clearly Bradford's favorite target. His wife just gave birth to twins last night. Could be a factor if they are out of sync on Sunday (assuming he plays).

It's one thing to be all poms-poms and rainbows, it's another to do it with your eyes closed.

You do realize the Vikings have held Aaron Rodgers, Cam Newton and Eli, OBJ & friends to 34 points combined, right? While the Texans are giving up 27 to a 3rd string rookie making a 1st ever start and 20 to the Titans who didn't play well at all. Maybe because of the Texans D but still 20 points.

I'll give you the Texans D is good but don't act like they're far and away better than anybody out there. That just makes you look dumb.

Never said they were far and away better then any one else. I said they are up there with the vikings defense ands is true. The Texans defense is ranked 5th in the NFL right now. Also said that the Vikings offense hasn't faced a defense like the Texans this year witch is also true.
The Titans, Packers, Panthers and Giants defenses are not in the top 5.
Never said they were bad, just not as good as ours.

Look. This is going to be a very tough game. The Vikings defense is top 3, ours is top 5.the offenses however are both in the bottom of the league. It's a close match up. The special teams will be the difference as well turnovers. The Vikings are the best in the league at getting turnovers and the Texans are no where near that mark.
That has to change in this game for the Texans to have a chance.
I'm not stupid. I've watched all of the same games as everyone else here.
Do I think the Texans will win? No. I don't.
But, they have a chance if the mistakes are dealt with and reduced.
The Vikings force mistakes.
The Texans will have to resist mistakes and force some to have a chance.
That's my point.

I first want to applaud you for being a logical opposing fan. You came in here to talk football, not just stir sh*t up, like most opposing fans do.

Now onto the game. I think OBrien will have a game plan to try to eek out a low-scoring game. Ultra-conservative on offense, rely on the defense, and hope the ball bounces our way.

Question for you. If there are zero turnovers this game by either team, who do you think wins?

As a fan of both, I still pick Vikings if turnovers are even.
If it were in Houston and that occurred, I would say straight toss up coming down to 1 lucky or unlucky break.
Having been to US bank for the GB game after the bears opener at NRG, there's just more energy there. More belief.

I'll be there Sunday, rooting for cheese curds and drinking beer.

I stated earlier that I would be going and I have heard nothing but amazing things on US Bank Stadium. The clear roof has a way of intensifying the sound from what I have heard. One of the best home field advantages in the league for a few years to come by the sounds of it. Even though I'll be in battle red wishing for the best I still can't wait to enjoy the scenery/experience regardless of outcome.

Where are your seats?
I know a handful of Houston people going.

I really don't see an advantage, what it's going to come down to is forcing your offense to beat our defense. Essentially controlling turnovers. I predict we'll go with safer passing options this game like screens, throws to the RBs, we'll also probably lean on the Stretch run game a little more. At most we'll see 4-5 deep balls if they get a look, but it'll be the "Lets see if I can overthrow Fuller" game, just to keep your safeties back.
I know we're ranked low in offense. But talent wise, I'd take our team in a heartbeat! Miller over Asiata/McKinnon. Our WRs is a big over their WRs. I do like Rudolph over our TEs. I don't know much about their OL, but we may get Brown back, and they lost Kalil. I also rather have Os over Bradford, but I can understand if that's not true for everyone. In other words, I think our offense "should" be better than theirs. That should be our advantage on the field, but we have yet to see it.

Thanks man! I always think it's awesome to talk football with another team's fan base. I get tired of hearing the same opinion from the same fans. I'm impressed with the knowledge of this board. By far the most knowledgeable I've seen so far (probably the Texas thing, Saints boards I've been on are the worst).

If there are zero turnovers, I think the Vikings win due to field position. That's honestly been the most underrated key to the Vikings winning streak (aside from the Titans game perhaps). Jeff Locke has been absolutely awful in his career. Everyone wanted him cut, but he's having a career year and part of it may be the addition to Cordarrelle as a gunner. Him and Sherels can collapse on returns quickly allowing Locke to find a nice balance of distance and hang time.

Packers- they dominated the field position game. Packers blocked a punt and scored on that possession (I think) but other than that their punter was awful and our pinned them inside the 20 numerous times.

Panthers - They were kind of kicking the Vikings' butt until they pinned them inside the 5 and Hunter got that safety. Then they got good field position again and Sherels returned the punt.

Giants - This was more of a combo of things, but still won the field position battle.

Giants - This was more of a combo of things, but still won the field position battle.
That sounds discouraging for us, because our STs have been inconsistent.

Our blocking of the gunners has been horrible, except for the one punt return for a TD we had. If this comes down to a battle of field position, I don't like our chances.

They all have decent Defenses, but, none are even close to the level of the Texans.

If you didn't say that then somebody is hacking your account.

We got beyond lucky to score these seats.
Keep me in mind for next year. We've already sold the remaining games we can't make it to for this season. Will go if(when) they host a home playoff game.
Maybe you've posted it on this board already, but how was your experience?

The place is amazing.
The only thing we noticed at all bad was long men's room lines.
Atmosphere was awesome outside, crazy inside.
Tailgating was a bit....weird. instead of our normal prison camp parking lots here in Houston, all of their lots are open. With less noticeable area restrictions. Also mostly surrounded by buildings. More like college if your college is in a large city.
The building is amazing. The doors are cool. If they had run one display and the a/c duct behind it differently, the view would be amazing. It was still pretty nice.
It's all shiny and new. And awesome.

Yeah I thought they may as well. But they did have a nice tribute during the game against the Packers.

Prince imo was the greatest musician ever. He was set to play the first concert at US Bank Stadium which would have been unbelievable.

Prince WAS the greatest musician singer/songwriter ever. And then Metallica ended up christening the stadium. At least they could have had Bob Dylan.

But screw it, I hope the Texans beats y'alls asses into a stupid purple cum sock this Sunday.

If not, well, I've never had anything against the Vikes as an organization for any reason unless the Oilers/Texans were playing them. Have a good game. We cannot control the outcome, but we can be entertained (or not). Cheers!

I agree with JamTex. we're four games in & people are over rating the Vikings defense, & under estimating ours.

that changes Sunday.
