Although true, there was enough time to call timeout when someone saw the gunner uncovered. I don't know if OB was discussing the upcoming series with Watson and was not looking at the field, but a coach on the sidelines or in the booth should have been yelling in his ear.

It also shows a lack of leadership on the team that not even a player was jumping around and yelling to call a timeout.
 
O'Brien's contract and his good relationships with the GM and QB mean he'll be coaching in Houston at least through the 2019 season. I give him until 2020 unless he miraculously discovers how to manage a clock, timeouts, and two-minute play calls. That's just the reality of it.

That's the thing though...the punt returner (Ervin) is normally the guy that counts and is supposed to point that stuff out...STF was he doing back there?

In my opinion, Andy Reid is one of the better offensive minds in the NFL and calls his own plays. However, even Reid is prone to abandoning the run too soon or making terrible game management decisions. He has an OC and from time to time, will even let the OC call plays.

As an offensive guru, when you compare OB's resume to Andy Reid, it's very thin. The Texans should have an OC on staff. My point? Better coaches than OB have an OC. Better coaches than OB have an OC calling plays.

Isn’t it a coaches job to get players to “play”? Their is adequate talent on this team. Adequate Coaching is what is missing.

Not gonna argue that, but players have to do their job also. I think everyone will agree RAC is an excellent DC, but did you see all the missed tackles today? And everyone said Seeley (sp?) is a great STC, but did you see that fake punt?

I'm not yet on the fire OB bandwagon, I want an experienced OC on the team. If O'Brien is still learning how to be a HC, I don't understand why the McNairs and Gaine have allowed him to go without an experienced offensive mind on the staff. It's at the point that it appears he is putting his ego ahead of what's best for the team and his success as a HC.

We had Hoyer-Mallet, then Osweiler, then last year's OL and we say "it can't possibly get worse."

And yet it does.

The only reason he's still employed in Houston is because the losing seasons were blamed on the subpar QB's. Those excuses were validated when Watson became a college-ball TD slot machine last year, but now that he's having to adopt an NFL offense, the same old O'Brien flaws are surfacing and losing us games. After this season there are no more excuses. But again, his GM and QB relationships will buy him an extra year.
 
There are no options for head coach or offensive coordinator in NFL or college football? Seems players have to compete to maintain their position but not HC? I'm frustrated and tired time to get some sleep. Hope I don't have nightmares.

The pass blocking steadily improved and at the time of the back to back screens the O-line was run and pass blocking well.

There was no reason to overthink things at that point. Smash mouth football was working.

O’Brien won the power struggle with Rick Smith since Smith chose his wife over the team. O’Brien then got to hand pick the GM who is essentially his puppet. Guy who threatened to leave 3 yrs in a row now has the keys to car.

This is the same stuff that went on with the Oilers. Ladd won the power struggle with Bum back in 1981. Went the other way then (GM won over the HC) The coaches he hired were all his puppets and beholden to him until he got the boot for being a giant ass. Eventually when Glanville split Bud Adams decided to be more hands on and that led to things like Pardee and Buddy Ryan.

I'm not really sure what would be described as McNair being hands on. I always looked at Capers/Casserly as fairly intelligent hires considering who was available and what the man knew about the business at that time. I mean Capers had done the expansion team thing before, had a good reputation as a defensive coach, and was a man of decent character. Casserly was proven to be more of a snake oil salesman than front office genius at the time but he did know how to run an NFL team so it could have been worse. There were better options maybe but they would have required a more adventurous owner who maybe knew more about the league to make and McNair wasn't ready to do that yet.

McNair seeking out Dan Reeves for advice on his next coach/GM wasn't a particularly bad idea. Reeves gave him what I think was good advice and hiring Kubiak was smart. Letting Kubiak choose the GM was odd to me. I see Bob McNair asserting himself in moves like choosing to send Casserly packing along with Capers (good move) adding Wade (great move), and going after Ed Reed (WTF move).

He's done another WTF thing by letting O'Brien pick Gaines I think.

Gary picks Smith (bad), Smith yes-man's the pick of O'Brien (bad), O'Brien hand picks Gaines.....? Who knows how that turns out but it doesn't look like a positive trend to me.
 
Smith backstabbed Kubiak (not sure if there was a power struggle with him, doesn't seem like a thing Kubiak would do).

But kind of funny that 3 idiots McNair, Rick and O'Brien ended up together. No wonder we're 1-11 in the past 12 games.

Gaine is just O'Brien's yes-man. He should be gone when O'Brien is gone, unless the new coach wants him.
 
O'Brien is just a dog and pony show. He has hamstrung this organization for years. He will stunt QB development. He will mismanage and lose games because of poor decision making. No situational awareness. No instinct.

Bill Obrien should be that coach who walks up and down the sideline after a demoralizing play screaming his lungs out, neck veins popping trying to keep everybody fired up and attentive. Bill Obrien should not be making down and distance play calls, timeout decisions, challenges, or any other critical choice that could alter the outcome of the game.

I believe this was all obvious in his 1 year OC stint in New England. Patriots fans had those complaints back then. Texans didn't do their due diligence with the hire.

Everybody needs a yes-man or two around so who knows? Maybe he'll keep him if he swears allegiance to the new HC.

Yeah it was defensive coordinator Ed Biles I believe, him and Ladd worked together to get Bum thrown out, Biles had a big presentation to Bud Adams with charts and diagrams and snitched him out about a bunch of rule violations or something, once Bum was out Biles got the head coaching job and they were the worst team in the NFL for a few years as a result.

I thought Kubiak deserved another shot after 2013, if nothing else I would have liked to have seen Wade take over as HC. I was not a fan of O'Brien hiring, his credentials just were not impressive, he was OC for the Patriots during a time when they DID NOT win a Super Bowl and I believe that Belichick lets guys go for good reason, either the game has passed them up or he has somebody better he wants to promote to their job(with O'Brien I believe he wanted Mcdaniels back). O'brien did grow on me, I liked his personality and I defended him the whole Brock Osweiler season. Last year was the last straw for me though, that team was about as spineless as I've seen in 16 years watching the Texans, hell some of the 2002-2004 Dom Capers expansion teams had more injuries a tougher schedule and more heart than that team last year. I felt like it was time to clean house and start fresh building around Watson. Now this year is wasted and we missed out on some good potential replacements, really in hindsight people who were saying we should have fired him after the Osweiler season were right.

I mean what do fans really expect from a team with a bunch of star players that are coming off of seroius injuries, didn't have their 1st/2nd rd draft picks, chose to sit on 26 mil in cap space and not protect their franchise qb who's coming off of his 2nd ACL?

With that said Ithink BOB is getting worse in his decision making over the yrs. But I want to see what he does with a complete team and sorry to say that's going to take another couple of yrs to cleanup the mess Ricky left behind. They are off to a bad start on the cleanup. but it looks like they had a productive draft last offseason and good times could be around the corner.

O'Brien is part of it. He wanted hoyer, mallet, switchable ol, and so many picks spent on dumb gadget players who never pan out (Braxton, Ervin, strong, etc)

He did pick the QB's.

The draft pick/FA's not so much. You can see the difference in Gaine's 1st draft class.
 
All of you are correct on the criticisms of the first 2 games. I, in my opinion, blame it on the lame NFL's preseason stance on not playing any players that will be on the first squad in game 1. I would look at the rookies in practice, but make the regulars play at least 3 preseason games to gel together. I hate having to suffer through 4 or 5 regular season games in order to have players gel with each other. This is of course my opinion that you should take with a grain of salt....lol..kind of like OB's play calling..

yup running 2 tunnel screens from the Titans 38 that got us no where instead of just running the ball when we are averaging like 5 yards a carry was such great play calling
