I'd say they were being compounded …. when its the coaches job to mask those deficiencies....

OB needs to go - Yesterday.

We've got one year left on Watson's rookie deal , either you know what you have by the end of next season or you are setting yourself up for 4 more years of mediocrity or worse.

From what I've seen, Watson is *potentially* the best QB in Houston since Warren Moon. However, it is obvious he is not improving, and the team itself is totally mired in mediocrity. If fact, if anything, Watson is getting worse as time goes on and injuries and repeated hits take their toll. Another year working for OB will do nothing but damage Watson even further.

Did anyone else just happen to listen to Greg Cosell on the Sean Salisbury show?? He gave some really insightful commentary regarding what he see's as far as Deshauns struggles and the system itself. He is saying that Deshuan's mechanical issues (not planting the back foot and delivering strong throws, mainly - and im sorry im going off of memory i think there was somthing else) seems to be what is causing his biggest issues throwing off the timing of the entire play(s). He says that since Deshuan has made so many ridiculous plays, and has done some impressive stuff already that many feel he's like a 10 year vet. He states that for this particular system (im guessing he's talking about the EP) that it takes a QB 4 complete years to "truly master it"

Sean Salisbury then asks him about the system here and Cosell made an interesting comment regarding the iso routes that get run mainly here .. those longer routes that rely on your receiver beating his man. He loves Hopkins and says usually he will, but its the NFL. Sean asks why dont the Texans look around the league to other successful offensive teams and try to see if any of those concepts might help Deshaun, Cosell says that he doesnt know what goes on in the Texans house, but he did say that Kyle Shanahan watches offensive film on the Patriots EVERY SINGLE WEEK. He states that the TExans COULD entertain the idea of running different combination routes as he calls them and take advantage of the mismatches those tend to create vs man or zone coverages.

I hope someone may find the true audio because Im not doing it any justice, but i found it revealing beyond the surface level stuff that has been discussed so far. I cut out right before they started to talk about the coming matchup with the Falcons so maybe someone else can finish the thought.

A good listen, thanks for the pointer. I respect Greg Cosell's opinion on tape breakdown more than anyone.

LOL @ "the defense is fine"

wow some of you guys are really confused. Game days RAC gets crucified around here. Now he's a strength? its just funny to me. I agree he's probably the best coach we have on the staff, but cmon now. Giving up the NO game was bad. JAX was another lucky win, if Minshew is allowed to make a play we lose. We can make fantasy scenario's all day. Lets stay grounded and devoid of speculation. The defense on the strength of scheme is middle of the pack right now. If they had some quality players on that side of the ball sure it could probably catapult them higher, but currently they stand at 17th overall defense, 16th vs the run and 21st vs the pass and the teeth of the schedule still to hit.

We should be concerned because the defense has historically been near the top 10 in most categories and the identity was that you could not run on the ball on the HOuston Texans. Thats not the case anymore.

You don’t dump #1 overall pass rushing diva for a box of rocks. Your wrong, defense always needs playmakers and backend is weak so you need to pressure opposing QB’s.

We're in complete agreement …. OB is not part of the solution and even if he is not the problem (fairly obvious he is part of the problem) - He needs to go before he does any more damage.

On Watson getting worse - its not only the hits and injuries but the bad habits he's developing as a result of all this garbage.

Setting up an offense for this guy to be successful in seems easy to me ….

First things first - I'd put him under center be it one or two back sets - play action just works so much better that way.

Run it down their throats then run it again..

I'd simplify the reads in the passing game - first and second reads literally in the same frame of vision - that doesn't necessarily mean the receiver is in the same frame (the read is often the a DB) Always give him an easy check down option and drill it in his head that sometimes chucking it in the stands is the best option.

Play action play action play action and more play action …. literally every play appears the same up to the point of a handoff - or not. Make them honor the run on every damn play.

Edumacate these jokers how to set up an RB screen - probably the best blitz / pressure beater in the playbook.

Tear page 1 out of the playbook …. that's the one where multiple receivers end up outside the numbers on the same side of the field in close proximity.
Tear page 12 out of the playbook …. that's that damn bubble screen.
Tear out that last page too …. that's the DHop pass.

The pass catchers also need some coaching …. no more just run a route out of the tree. Your route is based off of a read of the defender … everything they try to take away opens up something else.

Hey!!!!! When your QB is running for his life …. , make your numbers available - Come back to the ball!

I honestly don't know what folks see in Cal McNair to make them believe that he is capable with regards to evaluating and hiring a head coach and GM.

Everything about the man screams the exact opposite to me.

I see what you mean...

Why, just because you don’t like his decisions? Hate to tell you this but Texans are privately owned, none of us has the right to tell any of the McNairs what they should or shouldn’t do with it.

So glad you pointed that out.

What about reporters? Can they tell the McNairs what they should or shouldn't do?

He spent the first 3 years not knowing his system is trash because he couldnt find a QB and the last 3 years not knowing his system is trash because he cant teach it to DW4.

If his excuse will be that he never had a QB, how many coaches get 6 years in if they can't identify a QB?

He identified QBs, he just never identified QBs that could play at an NFL level. I'm actually starting to wonder if BoB best potential is the college HC level. You go back to look at what he did at Penn St and it was a miracle they were able to have a winning record with all the sanctions and punishments that were dropped on them. Plus he did make who was it Hackenberg look like an NFL ready QB when the kid has no business anywhere near an NFL team. We maybe seeing the Peter Principle in action.

The whole thing is a good listen.

https://sportstalk790.iheart.com/fe...wn-deshaun-watson-and-looks-ahead-to-falcons/

Best part for me: Cosell -- I'd like to see more more route concepts and combinations in tandem where the concepts present receivers open and quicker defined throws.

Salisbury has a great show. Very knowledgeable football wise and his guests too seem to be highly respected NFL guys. It somewhat justifies the eye test when people on game days are saying "they are just lining up 4 guys and telling them to get open" .. no true strategy or foresight. routes take forever to develop, your receiver is not going to win every battle. If you watch Deshaun from last game on some replays he has to eat the ball a few times to prevent from throwing a possible INT.

I also really liked the portion about Deshauns mechanics and how he needs to improve on certain fundamentals in order to see the field better and deliver a proper throw, explains the windows in the NFL and how the bad timing of a play due to whatever (route concept, poor QB play, OL play etc) will be the difference in that step or two that is needed to complete the pass.

Cosell says that Kyle Shanahan watches film on the New England offense EVERY WEEK! As bright an offensive mind as he is independently obviously he see's something that McDaniels does as having enough merit to replicate - but yet McDaniels would be a bad hire for Houston?

Im assuming you mean dump JD? That ship has sailed my dude. I agree defense needs playmakers, but this team decided that the defense would have to be sacrificed in order for the offense to "get better" I guess.

I think the Texans are middle of the pack in everything defensively. Mercilus has been a nice stat surprise, but everyone knows ONE defender will hardly move the needle. ILB play started off slow again this year, but they are starting to put it together. Should be the strength of the team (McKinney/Cunningham) but they struggle vs the pass. DJ Reader is becoming a force, but I wouldnt expect him to hang around, he will seek out a higher payday elsewhere since he so far has rejected the HOU offers to extend.

So you're stuck with a stud safety who's shoulder is hanging on by a thread. The "TE Whisperer" who cant cover tight ends. Father Time at one corner and the 10 Million Dollar Man at the other (who's tackling prowess would make Deion Sanders blush). JJ Watt has his moments, but he no longer is a game changer by himself.

So yeah .. not getting consistent pressure, PLUS a bad backend = 17th total defense. 16th vs the run. 21st vs the pass. Wait til we have to play ATL, KC, NE, Ravens and hell even the Raiders and Bucs have had offensive explosions recently.

RAC's Triple B Defense hopefully can hold them around 20ppg and the offense needs to carry the team like the GM/Coach designed it to do.

After reading this post it's hard to believe that they are a58 yd FG and a missed sack away from being 4-0

Seattle was one running play away from beating the Pats in the SB. Saints were one blown call away from playing in the SB.

So whats your point?

I think he is saying that it is unbelievable that the Texans could be 4 and 0 with such a shitty head coach.

Pretty sure that's absolutely a right everyone here has.

Doesn't mean the McNairs or anyone else has to waste one instant listening or obliging.

After seeing how much it cost to be a season ticket holder...... I can't believe there hasnt been a riot.

I'd rather put that money into something... that I could at least say is high quality and I could enjoy many years from now..... IF I had that kind of money sitting around... of course.

To those that have it, more power to ya, but Id personally demand more for my money.

Ah crap... you're telling me the Texans and OB are a young team?

I thought the OB led Texans got old pretty dang fast...man... perspective is an amazing and tricky thing it seems.

Bwhahaha he gets stuck on a false narrative and stick with it. This team is not young like that.

Who is a valid reporter?

That's a guy with valid media credentials - actually covering the games and interviewing players & coaches.

All these websites compiling stats and posting opinion / second hand information - Not so much.
(Not that they aren't informative but I wouldn't call them "Reporters")

John McClain?

Yes …. That guy has ties throughout the league.

Have talked to him a few times over the years …. he knows more about football and its history than damn near anyone.

Yeah , he writes fluff pieces now …. but times have changed.

Back in the '70's... when he had competition from the Post and only newspaper articles to write, he was THE MAN for pro-football in Houston

Even later he was still pretty good , just when the Texans came to town he didn't have any ties to the team and the team would get their panties in a wad for writing anything critical about the team making it hard for any writer to be objective.

I'd take Pancakes and his football savy over some 20something girl who hasn't a clue about the game and got the job for her looks.

We could tell them with our wallet, but us Texans fans are so loyal we just keep renewing our PSL's like clockwork
Bengals fans paid for years of mostly mediocrity. Fans hope for the best time and again and the owners allow for the same crap not really caring about the teams success as long as they make a profit. Then when the fans do stop producing a profit they threaten to move the teams. There are a lot of people who would love to have a pro team represent their city or state. It sucks.

We on this board forget we are a very small part of the overall Texans fan base and most of them seem to be fairly happy with the team not so much because they like BoB or his scheme but because most games Watson makes it fun to watch and Watt pushes faces in.

Most people that go to the game are going for he experience and the tailgating as much as they are the game itself. It’s one reason that ticket prices are so high even though the team hasn’t had the same level of success or history as the teams with similar prices. We are victims of our love of football.
