Fast Mock Draft 2.0

With the 20th overall selection in this years draft, the Houston Texans select:

Ryan Mathews
Running Back
Fresno State
5'11" / 218 lbs

The Texans were 30th in rushing last season, and one of those reasons was not having a legitimate running back. Steve Slaton being injured, partially caused massive turnovers and game changing results.

Mathews is a legit every-down back who can share carries with Slaton to give the Texans the 1-2 punch they have been desperately looking for since their inception as a franchise. Knows how to pass block, and can even get out in the flats and catch a pass. Will break tackles and get us the tough yards between the tackles that we so desperately need.

I also considered Kyle Wilson who was recently selected. Earl Thomas who has already been selected. Devin McCourty who is still on the board. Taylor Mays who is still on the board, but rates out as more of a SS. In the end I chose a player who would fill one of our biggest needs, and was the higher rated player on my board.

Never really considered Iupati in round 1 (even though he was just selected) since we signed Wade Smith, and have Mike Brisiel coming back. Possibly Chester Pitts as well.

lol ill see what I can do.

I know people are split on this kid, but I felt like with my options available, fixing the RB position was the thing to do.

Actually with who was available you weren't exactly spoilt for choice. If your not feeling Pouncey, your kind of stuck with Mathews.

Man this mock is really making me realize how much I'd like the Texans to trade down. The talent just isn't THAT much better than late 1st early second. I'd be leaning towards Mathews in this situation as well.

Sorry for the delay. I'll come up with a pick in a couple minutes.

The Cincinnati Bengals select Sergio Kendle, LB from The University of Texas.

Wow, where do I begin? TE is a need and that's the most popular pick for us but I just can't bring myself to pick any of these TE's at 21 overall. FS could use an upgrade but Thomas is gone, Nate Allen seems to be a reach. Taylor Mays is a popular name for this selection, but I can't spend the 21st overall pick on a guy I'm not convinced is going to be a significant upgrade over Chinedum Ndukwe or Roy Williams at SS. DT could use a guy but Price is starting to worry me here and Odrick seems a bit overrated here. I really wanted to take Dez Bryant but feel like I need to pass since I just spent some capital on Antonio Bryant to pair with Ochocinco. Wasn't too keen on any OG prospects right here so... I chose Kindle because he's every much the athlete and prospect of anyone on the board. He can rush the passer, chase the ball carrier, drop into coverage and cover those TE's.

With the 22nd pick the Patriots take the BPA, who plays a need position, in Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State.

It is reported that Tom Brady tried to do the robot after hearing the news.

I was hoping he was going to keep falling all the way to the Jets. Hard to believe he lasted this long.

I feel your pain, these mid round picks have a lack of value for money.

I like Kindle, he'll find a way to contribute for them early and often.

With 25th pick, the Philadelphia Eagles select Sean Weatherspoon, LB, Missouri

As the Eagles GM, I'm starting my second mock draft haul by selecting the best OLB in the draft, Mr. Whitey Tighties. While this doesn't solve all of our problems with the LB position, it's definitely a step in the right direction. Weatherspoon is a vocal leader with great size and speed. He's just the type of player we're looking for and we're very fortunate that he's still on the board at #25.

26.) Arizona Cardinals - Texan4Ever - 7AM WEDS

27.) Dallas Cowboys - Kaiser Toro

Agreed. I hate this pick for the Texans but honestly their weren't really any great picks available for us. I'd have chose Maurkice Pouncey or Sean Weatherspoon though in that situation.

This draft fell really badly for people who don't like RBs or Mathews. I'd take Pouncey here but I think we'd be in the huge minority and a lot more people would hate that pick.

With the 26th pick, the Cardinals select...

Golden Tate, WR

500x500_328272f8-8695-40dd-8a1d-d1056ed74e63.jpg

The players I needed that are first-round talent have been taken so with a new QB under center and in need of a playmaking WR, the Cardinals select Golden Tate who is probably the most productive WR of this years class.

With the 27th pick the Jerryboys take Bruce Campbell, OT/Truckasaurus/Killer of the Undead, Maryland

Sunday! Sunday! Sunday! If you miss this, you'd better be dead... or in jail...
And if you're in jail, break out!

Just to give yall a little insight on how I see it.

My choices were Mathews, Mays, Weatherspoon, Pouncey, Bryant, Price, Robinson, and McCourty.

Taylor Mays has questionable ball skills, which is what I want in a FS. With Pollard getting resigned for the SS position it doesnt make sense.

Sean Weatherspoon would be addition at an already stacked position in my eyes. Cushing, Ryans and Diles are a great group. Don't see the need to add another linebacker in round 1.

Maurkice Pouncey was interesting, but where am I going to put him? You know we don't plug rookie centers in the lineup. And we have enough guards with our FA signing of Wade Smith, and Mike Brisel coming back.

Dez Bryant was really low on my list of needs. Even though he was high on my big board. Firs off the dude is kinda slow and dim witted. Secondly I am a big fan of Kevin Walter who we signed to a multi-year deal, and also think Jacoby Jones is a star in the making. So scratch him off.

Devin McCourty/Patrick Robinson were interesting, but I feel that this being a deep draft at CB, we can get a player in a later round to compliment Quin and Reeves.
Brian Price shows flashes of being able to shoot the gaps, but from the video I saw he ends up on his knees too much. Plus I would probably hang myself with another DT selection in the first round.

So i decided to grab the running back and shore up the position. We desperately need a stud RB. There is no denying that. Mathews and Slaton should give us that RBBC so we can grind out games, and put some on ice on our way to the playoffs.

One of the best Simpsons quotes of all time. You are on fire sir.

Thanks for the insight into your thought process.

As to this point, I would look to put Caldwell into C, have Pouncey play one of the guard spots and one of the vets (or best case scenario, Pitts) play the other one.

This is my thinking as well. As much as I'd rather spend our 1st on someone else and get Tate/Dwyer/Gerhart later... I really don't know what I would of done with this pick and most likely would have taken Mathews like you did. If Kubiak isn't 100% in love with Mathews though, I pray we could find a trade down partner. Maybe someone would like to snag Dez Bryant up b/c they know he's going to get taken soon, or Taylor Mays? or someone we're not even thinking about ala Joe Flacco.

Good point! And it is possible that Clausen might fall, or a team enamored with Colt might want to trade back into the first.

So I think we all agree that if the draft falls this way we need to seriously consider any trade back offers. But I think if we did take Mathews we would still have quality picks to upgrade other positions.

With the 28th pick in the NFL Mock draft the San Diego Chargers select Terrance Cody DT Alabama.

Cody helps replace Jamal Williams and is a perfect fit at NT in the Chargers 3-4 defense.

Although many will disagree I have Cody rated as the number 1 NT in this draft

Out of how many NT's this year...three? JK, if Cody can control his weight and develop his stamina he would be a good selection.

PM me your pick if you can.

Thanks TPN for PM'ing me your selection!

The New York Jets Select: Arrelious Benn, WR, Illinois

ArreliousBenn1.jpg

Thanks, SM, but dayum.

Benn was 3rd on my list and I really didn't want to pick him. According to the Jets fans, WR is their #1 priority in the draft. They are unimpressed with Braylon Edwards and from what I got. Benn is the 3rd best receiver in this draft but the problem is, he's the second coming of Braylon Edwards. But he was the top of the board for me at this spot. So there you go.

I really wanted Tate or Odrick here. Terrence Cody was my 4th pick. And my fifth was Hughes.

The board just really didn't fall out well for the Jets this time around.

Yeah thats what I was thinking. When you sent that to me people started taking your players left and right.

Super Mario, I thought I had the Panthers. In the results thread it shows you with the Panthers, but in the original assignment message in this thread, it says I have them.

What's up?

You have the Panthers. I got us mixed up on the Panthers and Bears who both dont have first round picks.

I'd have chosen Pouncey and knowing Kubiak would never start a rookie at C I'd have played him at LG for a year beside Myers so that he can learn to read the defenses and make the blocking assignment calls. Pouncey would then make Myers a backup or expendable in the 2011 season. Pouncey will be a Pro Bowl C/OG for someone in the next couple years if he's not injured.

As I stated earlier in the thread, Caldwell is the C for my money, Briesel can play the other guard spot.
