Ed Reed agrees to terms with Texans

Its dumb for the Texans to be haggling over 2 million if this is indeed the case. Meet in the middle and make it work. Yeah, it sounds silly for me to make it sound so easy but its also silly to send your GM on the team plane if you're not willing to do what it takes to get him signed.

I don't think we're haggling. Reed is trying to get what we offered from Baltimore. At least that's how I see it.

Baltimore Ravens starting safety Ed Reed told Adam Schein of SiriusXM NFL Radio today that he's "not 100 percent committed" to playing this season, triggering a collective gasp among Ravens fans who have dealt with more than their fair share of upsetting news regarding their defense this offseason.

This isn't the first time in his career that Reed has threatened to hang up his cleats, and it's certainly not the first time in 2012 he's declared interest in retirement. In March, the matter seemed to be weighing on Reed's mind. He claimed, practically in the same breath, that he wasn't sure if he'd play this season and that he'd like four or five more seasons with Baltimore.

Then, just a few days later, Reed spoke out again, saying that he felt the Ravens "disrespected" him, presumably because they didn't respond to his earlier comments about wanting to stick around. Reed is in the final year of his contract, and he clearly hoped that his claim that he has up to five seasons left in him would have them come calling with an offer.

Indeed, NFL Network's Albert Breer believes that Reed's latest comments are part of his strategy to land a new contract with the Ravens. I am prone to agree with this sentiment; Reed is attempting to play a high-risk game of chicken with Baltimore in order to gain leverage in contract negotiations.

This is Ed from LAST year......you never know with him.

period!

Hey Uncle Rico, can you play safety as well as you can throw a pigskin which I heard you can throw over them mountains?

Heck yes he can. And they'd have made it to the state championship game if the coach had put him in.

If the Texans already knew they were not going to money whip Reed, they had pull out another type of sales job. Even when dealing with Baltimore, Reed has come off as having a good bit of diva to him.

Edit: BTW, i am not sure that the Texans would not be off signing two or three boring, but solid need fillers than messing around with the "name-brand" player here. this is really out character for them.

Naw, I don't see that. Reed is a warrior. He knows that his shelf life is short and wants to maximize it.

I wouldn't mind if we signed Reed but I'm not going to be upset if we don't, either.

He's old and he's past his prime. I'm not expecting him to come here and rejuvenate the defense like JJo and Manning did. I see him as a stop-gap, patch-up-the-position for a while player. I expect us to draft a mid-round safety and try to bring him along quickly.

I wish we'd sign some guys soon so we'd know more about the plan for the coming season. I hope we're not planning on pinning all of our starter and depth holes on rookies.

Getting an all-pro, championship caliber player in FA would certainly be out of character.

As the Houston Texans continue to haggle with the agent for veteran free safety Ed Reed following his free agent visit last Friday, the Super Bowl champion Ravens haven't closed the door on trying to retain the former NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

To characterize the situation as a true financial competition would be a bit of an overstatement, though.

The Ravens' tight salary-cap situation could preclude them from making Reed a major negotiating priority. Plus, the 34-year's old age, durability concerns and decline in range could work against a reunion with the Ravens.

The Ravens would like to have Reed back, but not for $6 million annually and definitely not for the $7.2 million he made in the final year of his expired six-year, $44.5 million contract.

As for the Texans, a league source with knowledge of the situation characterized the Texans' initial three-year offer as low enough that a fast deal was unrealistic. Talks are ongoing with the Texans and Reed's agent, David Dunn, who has kept Ravens team officials informed of what's going on as both teams and Dunn attend the NFL owners meetings in Phoenix.

And players for both the Ravens and Texans remain hopeful that Reed chooses their team, but it appears that the Texans are willing to commit more money to the nine-time Pro Bowl selection.

"Any team that's fortunate enough to get him is getting a Hall of Fame player," Texans quarterback Matt Schaub told The Baltimore Sun tonight at the Ed Block Courage award banquet at Martin's West. "He's one of the best if not the best safety to ever play the game and still in his prime. If you can add that kind of player, the leadership, the intensity he brings to his job, he's going to make the whole team better. It's the nature of the business. We'll see what happens."

Ravens wide receiver Torrey Smith, who attended the event and accepted Ravens outside linebacker Terrell Suggs' award on his behalf, said he has remained in touch with Reed throughout the process.

"That's the business side of it," Smith said. "It's tough for a lot of people to understand, especially the fans. We'll see what happens. I hope he ends up back in Baltimore. I've been texting him, not about what's going on, but just talking to him and seeing how he's doing. W'ell see.

"He always has a positive attitude. Fans are killing him on Twitter, but he's taking it in stride. He's enjoying it."

Former Ravens cornerback Chris Carr, who was in town to accept an award for San Diego Chargers teammate Quentin Jammer, is hopeful that Reed will conclude his career in Baltimore by signing one more contract with the Ravens.

"It's difficult," Carr said. "Once a player starts getting older, organizations don't want to invest in a player that's older. Ed Reed has been such a special player and he means so much, not only on the football field, but as a leader and teaching a lot of the young guys what to do in that secondary. Especially with Bernard Pollard leaving, I think it's really vital for the Ravens to sign him back.

"As a fan and a former Raven, I hope he stays here in Baltimore. It's unfortunate so many players who were part of the success are gone. It's the business and the salary cap doesn't give you too much wiggle room.
"

No, I cant play safety, thats my nephew, he has the moves!

to me it sure sounds like a ringing endorsement from Schaub in that quote. Hmmmm i guess Ed Reed is Texan material after all, I mean if Schaub says it I'm sure some of the dudes on the fence will definitely be all for it now! LOL

Low balling....

Do you really blame them for low balling when they have limited cap resources , many holes to fill and nine draft picks four of which are in the top 100 ?!

And it sounds like y'all are no balling...... so let me ask you this..... will the Ravens fans be happy if he comes back because y'all have been trashing him.

I can't or shouldn't speak for the rest of Ravens fandom so I will say this:

My opinion is that I would like to see Ed play out his career in Purple- Ravens purple like Jon Ogden and Ray Lewis; the other two HoF'ers.

I always wish the iconic players would stay with their team and retire rather than chase a paycheck- It broke my heart to see Johnny U in powder Blue for a year...

My sources continue to say Ed Reed is definitely not signing with the Texans, but might sign with the Texans, or not, and possibly will sign with the Ravens, or the Texans, or retire...and he was spotted skydiving into Lambeau Field where he met with Brett Favre....so, either this means Ed Reed is maybe signing with the Packers OR we're getting Favre as our QB.

Don't blame me. That's what my sources are saying, while tripping balls on rad shrooms in the danky basement of some old lady's house in Pearland.

Why can't E.Reed just retired?!?!?! If not for his relationship with AJ, these talks should of been over. We are basically holding hostage by Reed, who clearly trying to get top dollars from his first choice the Ravens. If not for his new agent that he just hired, this would of been a done deal for both teams. We will be doing this next season again when he tinkers with retirement again.

I saw Ed Reed at the corner store, he was 3 cents short, took a a dime out of the "give a penny take a penny" dish.... waited for the change, and kept it. :wadepalm:

Burn %: Quin - 48.4%, Reed 55.6%
Yds allwed rec.: Quin - 334, Reed - 457

Also, Quin was better in tackling, while Reed had 4 INTs to Quin's 2. How that translates across systems is anyone's guess, but neither one are a scrub or worthless. Neither one is head and shoulders ahead of Reed. I think Quin was the better player last year, and I think Quin will never be half the player Reed has been over his career. Do with that what you will, I guess.

I understand what you're saying. & I know what the stats are saying. But how do you compare the burn rate of a FS to the burn rate of a SS, especially when they play in completely different schemes.

Ed Reed is normally hanging back, playing centerfield, watching 2 players or more where Quin is normally in some kind of man responsibility whether he's backed up or in the box.

I like Quin. I don't think Reed can play the way Wade used him. I don't think Jarius Byrd or any of the Safeties rated higher than him can play like he does.

If we were talking Byrd vs Reed, those stats would hold more water (with me), or Pollard vs Quin.

If I had my rathers, I'd prefer Quin & Reed, but the Texans weren't going to sign Quin, drop Manning, & sign Reed.

I think we have the same source. Says something will happen in the next 48 hours.

Your source has no credibility. I defy you to find a basement in Pearland.

I don't see it that way. I think his preference is to get as much money in his last contract as possible. I think he'll take it from anyone.

I don't know. I feel like he would have taken $7M back to the Ravens if that's what we had offered him.

However, I wasn't sitting in the room with him, so my "feel" may be way off base. I'd like to think if Rick Smith thought he would sign for $7M it would be a done deal.

Now, I used to sell cars for a living (that was a long time ago) & I know many times it's not the deal itself that is important, but the perception of it. Like the Barwin deal, I'm sure there is a way to structure this thing so that Reed can walk away saying he's got a $7M/yr deal when only $5.5 is guaranteed this year.

I think I could have closed him. Understand I am talking out of my ass being that I've never talked to anyone about "settling" for $5.5M/yr

This is the bad part imo, & reason the Texans should have egg on their face.

:vincepalm:

If you're going to go all, "Moving on up" on him, send out the Jet, roll out the red carpet, wine & dine.... then get all "unrealistic" when it's time to start talking money, then what's the point?

Probably exactly why they took out all the stops. Look at our beautiful facility, look at how good we treat our players, look at our great city and look at how excited the fans are.. now please come play for us on the cheap.

Ive been really busy lately so I havent been able to keep up with the Texans like I usually do.. but from someone who is just reading the headlines.. it appears as though we are dead set on not making the playoffs for a third time.

If things dont improve soon we are gonna be looking at another few years of rebuilding come 2014.

If I'm Ed reed I'd take a little less money to go back to Baltimore. Really I'd have little interest in joining the texans for several reasons.

This is a dead issue as far as I'm concerned.

My sources tell me the Texans put on the whole dog & pony show out of respect for A.J.'s desire to have his buddy here -- but it stopped at an exorbitant contract number.

My sources also say Taylor Swift is about to write a song about Matt Turk -- who knew they were dating? -- and that may delay the Texans bringing Turk back into the fold. :kitten:
