Ed Reed agrees to terms with Texans

This is the bad part imo, & reason the Texans should have egg on their face.

:vincepalm:

If you're going to go all, "Moving on up" on him, send out the Jet, roll out the red carpet, wine & dine.... then get all "unrealistic" when it's time to start talking money, then what's the point?

I'd guess they were taking out all stops for the things they could offer outside of the salary cap, because they are limited with the actual cap.

If I'm not mistaking they offered 5mil per year to Reed, that seems like a fair offer for a player at his stage in his career, no?

If Reed isn't liking what the market thinks he's worth, he should retire.

The Texans need to move their ass on to plan B at the position and quit dickin with this guy if he's looking to get overpaid. Personally, I don't think he's even worth what we're currently offering.

THREE years???? A three year contract???? I hope if that report is accurate, the first 2 years are the only ones that have significant guaranteed money!

Rumor is that people are seeing him here in Chicago..not talking to the Bears but shopping at the American Girl Doll store on Michigan avenue...he is a doll collector...allegedly. Take that for what its worth.

If I were Reed, I would stick around for another year or two before retire as there still money to be made. We are talking about at least 4~5 Mil $ x 2 years right? Would you retire and give up that kind of money? After retirement, there's no guaranteed money. I would like to secure with more money before my retirement. Wouldn't you?

Obviously someone thinks that was "unrealistic" that's what was in the quoted article.

Personally I think $5M is a good number, but I don't know if it's a "need to jump on it right now" good number. Bringing him in as early as we did in the FA period, sending out the Jet & overall making a big deal out of it, if we weren't prepared to throw out a "need to jump on it right now" good number, we shouldn't have wasted our time.

"We'll guarantee you $5.5M in 2013. We'll guarantee you $5.5M in 2014. What are you willing to guarantee for an extra $1.5M?"

Because I'm willing to pay a man of Mr.Reeds stature & reputation $7M but I need some guarantees. Guarantee me 16 games & I'll get you $500K. Guarantee me 5 INts & I'll get you $500K. Guarantee me less than a dozen missed tackles & I'll get you $500K. Guarantee me a touchdown & I'll get you $500K.

I should have been an NFL general manager

We would get the equivalent of Ken Stabler in Houston, Joe Namith in LA, and Earl Campbell in New Orleans.

I'm beginning to agree with you. Although Joe Montana gave K.C. a playoff run they hadn't had in years when he showed up in their red uni. The other guys, not so much.

Why should we pad Ed Reed's retirement fund? I'm starting to think this is a really bad idea.

Go get Dumervil.

The article contradicts itself. I don't understand it.

Begins saying the Houston deal is better, then says reed expected to remain a raven...

If the Texans have the best offer and no other team is in it, then Reed needs the Texans.

If that were the case he'd have already signed or the texans would have backed out.

Reed would have caught his own flight to Houston and we wouldn't have wined and dined him on bob's personal jet.

I have a hard time being mad at Rick Smith for offering Reed around $5m a year (if reports indicated are true). I think $6m is a little too much (which isn't to say that I'd completely hate the signing) and $7m is even more so.

LoL...they changed the article...

Still kind of poorly written at the end and it's unclear what exactly its saying to me...

Hey can anyone confirm if IBNSportsWrap- is legit? Have they ever been right before anyone else announce it?

Incarcerated Bob is known for saying anything and everything is a possibility in hopes that something sticks. He's been right before only because he uses a "shotgun" approach to breaking sports news stories.

Texans should just give him a take it or leave it offer.. thats it,,

we need to move on...Quality Free Agents are still out there to be had...

Maybe Dumervill will take 6 mill a year you never know..

I've been stoked for so long and it's hard to keep up the level of exitement... Right now I'm starting to not give a damn... make something happen... :)

He announced the deal with Reed was official a week ago. When he was wrong he deleted the tweets.

Dude's just a fan.:swatter:

lol. Is Ed Reed still playing the Texans? Texans need to move on. There are plenty of vet safeties that wont cost what Ed will cost. Huff is just one example.

Agreed. Cut ties with the Reed situation and move on. I'd much rather the Texans throw that money at Dumervil and see if he bites.

Maybe the deal was official a week ago and every Texans fan is just in a timewarp where they don't know it yet.

Not news:

There's a bit of drama that circles Ed Reed. Not unusual for him to take his time, stretch things out. He was eternally unhappy with his being

disrespected by the Ravens organization all last offseason. Lot's of "Will he or won't he?" media. Yada, yada, yada.

However it works out will be fine.

Pat Kirwan was interviewed on 610 a few minutes ago. He stated that, according to discussions around the owners' meeting, expect the 49rs to jump into the mix within the next 2 days.

McNair didn't sound too positive about signing Reed in his tone. He also said that the Quin, Casey and Barwin losses tied into resigning Cushing and Watt next season.

If that is true, then the money issues are related to McNair's budget and not the limitations of the cap. It appears the organization may be using the salary cap very conventionally as a way to justify minimal expenses. I hope I am wrong, but it is appearing increasingly likely to be the case.

So they offered him closer to 4 million than 5??? Lol Rick smiff

It's a more realistic price point for his production. Good on Texans F.O. for sticking to their guns. Can't throw dumb money around like Redskins have & Dolphins did -- freaking flat cap crap means you'll pay for it later.

Then they need to pull the offer and look elsewhere. No need to wine him if they were going to make an offer like that.

Good for Rick Smith...only time I'm agreeing with him.

Spending most of your cap space on Ed Reed is not smart. If they think they could get him at 4 million a year, then you could spend the rest on say Eric Winston or another pass rusher.

This is the point, you go get a cheaper guy that can fill in until you draft someone....Sensabaugh (not a great option but knows Wade)...and forget throwing higher amounts of money at an older guy like Reed. Move along and get past it.
