Draft Tracker 2025

Lachey

Pre-Draft Analysis

Lachey suffered a season-ending ankle injury in the third game of the 2023 season and didn't put up big numbers in Iowa's run-heavy offense in 2024. He averaged 14.2 yards per catch in 2022, though, and has some upside. He is fast enough to make plays down the seam and stays focused on the ball when there's a chance he takes a big hit. Lachey is strong, fights to stay on his feet and drags defenders for yards after the catch. He is a big target who sits in pockets and boxes out defenders working against zone looks. He stays square, works his hands inside and fights to sustain as a blocker. -- Steve Muench

Luke Lachey TE Iowa
I will be gobsmacked! I really liked this youngster in 2023 before he wiped out his season in the injury. I think he could be steal of the draft.

I love this draft…but if NC says he doesn’t draft for need he has a damn funny way of showing it.
My guess is they have a board, and they the draft off that board. That board probably looks nothing like any draftniks' boards. If you build your board based on your needs AND "good football players", then it looks to you like you're just picking the best player off your board regardless of need.

I'm giving some expert opinion and advice here. The Houston Texans' history of draft picks has been mediocre and average AT BEST. The File Clerk, aka the Master Trader is no Eliot Wolf or Les Snead. This is just stating the obvious, unless of course, you are a regular customer who dines at the 1-star Caserio Cafe where OBVIOUS is not on the menu. I do hear they serve up some marvelous Kool-Aid, though.

I am willing to bet Eliot Wolf will be unemployed before Nick Caserio.

Caserio drafted guys like tank Dell, Anderson(traded his own pick to do so), stroud(didn’t fall for bryce young), Stingley, found bullock and traded down and got Lassiter, drafted Nico in the 3rd who is now a top 10 wr, did well on the Deshaun trade, got Danielle Hunter to come here, got Mixon for nothing, Kenyon green was bad but got cjgj out of it, and still has a nice haul for next year’s draft picks too while winning a playoff game the last two years. He also got demeco to cosch here after having two lame duck coaches. He’s really turned this team around

Definitely would have been drafted if he didn’t get an ACL injury at East/West Shrine Bowl practices. Similar prospect to Jaylin Smith but older and not quite as much upside.. Started HS football as a senior and was a 0 star recruit. Played 4 years at East Tennessee State and 2 years at North Carolina.

2 PR TDs at North Carolina.

At this point it is no more than a hope and a wish for the Oline. Despite the previous coaching factor, there are too many obvious weak points in several of the Olinemen we are keeping from last season. Weaknesses that I don't believe will be able to be compensated by new coaching.
Blake Fisher, Juice Scruggs, Paterson... you ready to move on?

I totally agree with you. It’s like your body needs certain nutrients from certain foods. The need is primal. But you also happen to like that food so by acquiring it you just think you are eating something that you really think tastes good.

They have basically said the OL issues were scheme and not talent related with their moves this offseason. Quite the black mark on Slowik’s resume. If the Fins fold this year, he’s gonna be coaching at an FCS school at this rate.
But they dumped 3 out of 5 "starters"

Schematic?

They essentially swapped similar talent vets for the ones cast off. Tomlinson for Mason, Ingram for Green. Tunsil to Robinson is a downgrade but offset by the picks added from trade and Robinson not being “bad” but average.

A lot of hope is pinned on scheme and young OL recently drafted developing. Three seconds drafted by this org, time to develop one.

If BPA, why Higgins over Emmanwori or even over Burden? Other than some on this message board, almost every mock I saw had both of those guys over Jaden Higgins. We could probably do that pic by pic. Best player available always sounds dynamic and correct and no one wants to think their team has dire needs. I don't care what Nick calls it as long as he keeps on producing as he has the last two drafts and looks like 20 25 draft also, for the most part. There was disagreement in 2024 draft if Lassiter or Bullock should have been chosen at their spot. As season progressed, we all became very happy that they were selected.

Not Fisher.........he needs time to develop. But if Scruggs doesn't get stronger and Paterson doesn't have a better healthy start to the year, and Zach Thomas doesn't get better than last year, I have no problem moving on from them early in the year.

Come on TK. You know Green was horrible mostly because of injuries and some scheme. Mason was because of aging out and cost factors. Tunsil was primarily because of him wanting an extension. As much as we despised his penalties, 2024 was nothing new just the first couple of games were focused on by refs.

I agree but Scruggs needs more than strength as he needs to set the line and pick up stunts. Patterson should be healthy. If not, who's our center? I guess long snapper or hunt up FA?

I don't draft for need and just take bpa is a a fallacy all GMs tell their fans. GMs do both. If there's a damn good player that fits a need at their spot, they'll pull the trigger, and if not they'll pull the trigger on best value. Every smart GM does both, I don't know why fans get so hung up on this every year, and I don't know why GMs get so defensive about it either.

Let's see what Chatgpt has to say about the Texans draft -

The Houston Texans' 2025 NFL Draft strategy has garnered a mix of cautious optimism and skepticism across the league. General Manager Nick Caserio executed multiple trades, culminating in a nine-player draft class that emphasizes depth and scheme versatility over marquee talent.Battle Red Blog+2Houston Chronicle+2SI+2

Key Draft Picks and Strategy

  • Jayden Higgins (WR, Iowa State, Round 2, No. 34): A 6'4" receiver with a 4.47-second 40-yard dash, Higgins is expected to contribute immediately, especially with uncertainties surrounding Tank Dell's recovery from a major knee injury in 2024. ESPN.com
  • Aireontae Ersery (OT, Minnesota, Round 2, No. 48): Selected to bolster an offensive line that allowed quarterback C.J. Stroud to be sacked 52 times in 2024, Ersery will compete for the left tackle position, aiming to reduce pressure on Stroud. ESPN.com
  • Jaylin Smith (CB, USC, Round 3, No. 97): Smith adds depth to the secondary, aligning with the Texans' focus on versatile defensive backs who can adapt to various schemes.
  • Woody Marks (RB, USC, Round 4, No. 116): Acquired after trading up, Marks is expected to provide depth behind Joe Mixon, offering a dynamic option in the backfield. SI+2PFF+2Battle Red Blog+2

League Consensus and Analysis

Analysts have generally assigned the Texans' draft a grade in the B to B+ range, acknowledging the team's efforts to address specific needs without securing standout talent. The emphasis on players who fit the Texans' system suggests a belief that coaching and scheme can maximize the potential of these selections. Reddit

However, some observers note that the Texans made several picks earlier than projected, indicating a reliance on internal evaluations over consensus rankings. This approach underscores a confidence in their developmental system but also introduces risk if these players do not meet expectations.

Overall Outlook

The Texans' draft reflects a strategic choice to prioritize scheme fit and depth, banking on their coaching staff's ability to develop talent. While this method has the potential to yield positive results, it also carries the risk of underperformance if the selected players do not adapt as anticipated. The success of this draft class will largely depend on the organization's capacity to cultivate these players within their system.

Wow. Was this being said in media or by a source you know?

Edit: Never mind, I see you said "from what I've been told." I'm just surprised that didn't already leak out, though I'm sure it will now.
I am pretty sure that it was out before the draft. I saw an article, didn't read it just read the title. And it said "Why Sanders visit with the Giants went south" and another "Sanders interview with the Giants tanked" judging by the titles, 3 days before the draft, I think the cat was out of the bag. Whoever was writing the articles had a source that was in the know. And they must have written something that had teams rethinking drafting him. So, IMO the source must have been reliable and teams called the Giants (likely other teams also) who talked to him and found out what had happened.
