Clowney is everything yet nothing you want as the #1 overall pick.![]()
"He is a remarkable player," McNair said, via the team's website. "He's one of these players that's really a once-in-every-10-years kind of physical specimen that comes along."
Now, that doesn't mean the Texans will draft Clowney; and McNair is a graduate of South Carolina.
...
"He's not a J.J. Watt," McNair said. "You know, J.J. didn't have that natural ability. He worked. He developed his. And one of the things I said to J.J. I said, 'J.J., I don't know what will happen, but if we get Clowney, we want you to instill in him the same kind of work habits that you have.' He said, 'If he's in the same room with me, then he'll have them.'"
Mmm, Texans taking Clowney or, more likely, trying to strum up interest for another team to trade up ahead of the Rams and take him?
Anyone who believes this is a bafoon. They're putting this out there because they are fishing Clowney to see if anyone wants to trade the farm. My guess is they really like Teddy (maybe JFF, but I doubt Rick gambles his job on him). This looks like they are open to getting multiple picks which could very well let them trade back up and get their QB with something on the side.
Yeah, let's show our hand and have JJ Watt baby sit our 1st pick. Yeah fkn right..
If we were to draft Taj Boyd at 2-1, or Aj McCarren at or Zach Mettenberger would that satisfy our QB need? We'd still be able to take Clowney.

Rumblings building around Jadeveon Clowney #NFLdraft - much more than speeding, some say off-field and attitude issues could impact his stock
A dang fool! Haha.
But seriously, I question someone who believes the Texans were to hint who they wanted in January.
Still early but source beleves if its up to Bill O'Brien expect Blake Bortles/UCF at 1st pick or Zach Mettenberger/LSU at the top of rnd 2

This is where I was originally.
However, after some thought, if the Texans believe there is something that separates Teddy Bridgewater, Blake Bortles, & Jonny Manziel, or some combination of the three, from Mettenberger, McCarron (who I'm really starting to like), & Boyd, then trading down is not an option.
Those three will be gone within the first 5 picks.
But if you think someone like Met, McCarron, or Boyd can be a franchise QB, then yeah. Trade down.
No way Cleveland gives up that much for the first overall. I think expecting their 4 and the Colts pick is reasonable, but adding in their #68 an their 2015 1st rounder is expecting way too much in my opinion. Although I do like your first three picks, Manziel-Amaro-Murhpy
I'd be OK with this. Clowney is a big risk but then I think Bridgewater is one as well (and I understand that not everyone shares that belief) so looking at what's available at the top I'm told RT's aren't an option at 1-1, Bridgewater is not much more "special" than a guy I can get at 2-1 or worst case scenario trading back up into the bottom of the first round.
In that case I go Clowney 1-1, Mettenberger 2-1 (hopefully) and consider myself fortunate.
Just nit pickin, but I believe SD edges out Cleveland for the 25th pick with a worse record. This would give Cleveland their own 1-4 and Indianapolis' 1-26.
Houston 1-1 3000
Cleveland 1-4 1800
Clev by Ind 1-26 700
Cleveland 2-36 540
This is approximately fair value. A 2015 first round pick would be close to Cleveland's second in 2014. So the suggested trade isn't too far from book. Maybe 200 -300 points above value.
From Houston's point of view, unless QBs go 1, 2, 3 Teddy, Johnny and Blake (not necessarily in that order), then they still get a hot QB along with the extra picks. Even if they do? They get a Clowney, Matthews or Barr (or any other hot pick). Not a bad scenario. I'm still convinced Keenum can start while any QB needing seasoning learns the ropes.
Now if Oakland or Minnesota want Carr badly, another trade down might be worthwhile.
This! I don't understand when people say, I would trade down and take Manziel at four but not at number 1. If he's (or any other player) good enough to take at 4, he's good enough to take at 1.

Because Manziel is worth less than Manziel and another 1st round pick or TB and another first round pick or BB and another first round pick if you think they all have a similar risk. But if everybody agrees with the risk assessment, then no trade will happen.
Well , given the bust potential of all three .... any of them could be a reach. The driving force here is the demand for the position.
A buffoon who can't spell?
That pick is worth more now than ever before with the rookie scale contracts. That's actually less than what Washington gave up to move up to #2.
Washington gave up 3 first round picks and a second rounder.
With Houston needing a QB in such a bad way , to get them to give up their choice of the three , a team is really going to have to come up with a significant offer .... I would accept nothing short of 4 , 24 & 36 (or something similar if the deal isn't with Cleveland) if I wasn't getting a #1 next year.
What's with the Mettenberger love? He looks exactly like Schaub to me.

I'm sure JJ and Jadeveon would go down just like this....
JJ: Alright man listen.....I'm J.J, you're Jadeveon, I'm in charge of mentoring you so let's just get this over with alright?
Jadeveon: Mentoring?
JJ: Yeah.
Jadeveon: It don't matter what I tell you, you ain't gonna never know nothing about me.
JJ: Hey, hey listen! I ain't babysitting you every day anymore okay!
Jadeveon: Look, what I got to say you don't really wanna hear cuz honesty ain't too high up on your people priority list.
JJ: Honesty? You want honesty? Honestly......I think you're nothing. Nothing but a pure waste of God given talent! You don't listen to nobody man! Not even Romeo or Rick. Shiver push on the line every time, man. You blow right past 'em! Push 'em! Pull 'em! Do something! You can't run over everyone in this league, and every time you do, you leave on of your teammates out to dry....Brian in particular!
Jadeveon: Why should I give a hoot about Brian, huh? Or anybody else out there? You want to talk about a waste, you the captain?
JJ: Right
Jadeveon: Captain's supposed to be the leader, right?
JJ: Right
Jadevon: You got a job? You been doing your job?
JJ: I've been doing my job.
Jadeveon: They why don't you tell your white buddies to block for Arian better? 'Cause they have not blocked for him worth a plugged nickel, and you know it! Nobody plays! Your self included! I'm supposed to wear myself out for the team? What team!? No. No, what I'm gonna do is...I'm gonna look out for myself.....and I'm gonna get mine.
JJ: See, man? That's the worst attitude I ever heard.

B. You've never seen Mettenberger play.
Have you gotten to see Brett Smith? Tell me how different he is from Teddy?

The LSU OL is almost unfair. Men amongst boys.
It won't be the same in the NFL. He is slow. Really slow.
Unless this guy turns out to be the next Brady in delivery speed/ball placement, i have my reservations about a slow, post-ACL QB.
I'm sure JJ and Jadeveon would go down just like this....
So you haven't watched him, got it.
You heard it here: pocket-passers have no place in the NFL.
He wasn't exactly mobile beforehand, so don't trump up the injury like it would significantly change his style of play.
I have seen him play. He's made some good throws and improved. Then the ACL took him out. It is what it is. I think I have a pretty good reason to want the top "rated" or "hyped" (which ever you prefer) QB instead of a guy who played good football for one year and then got an ACL. He reminds of the recent Arkansas QBs that had decent years. Tall in the pocket and strong arms can only do so much. Sorry if I'm not vibrant if that's our answer to QB after all the crap I've seen as a Texan fan.
I called out your post for attributing his success to his offensive line, which tells me you haven't watched all his games.
Yep, sure haven't seen every play of Mett's only worthy season. It sure doesn't hurt to have a good one and be surrounded with a borderline NFL talented team. He's a tall, immobile QB who had one good year then tore his ACL. Sorry, doesn't excite me. I get the whole "great value for a later picked QB," but I'm tired of that route. I'm a "Keep it simple, Stupid" guy this year because we'll most likely won't be in this position for a QB for a while. We'll see what happens.
What I'm saying is that you don't know what the hell you're talking about, and thus should refrain from doing so. Downplaying Mettenberger for having one good year and then throwing his success at the feet of his team (and especially the Oline, whose play can be best characterized as bipolar this past season) is evidence of ineptitude regarding this discussion.
Please buzz off.
Hahaha, what?! You're acting like I denounced your religion. You must be a pleasure to be around. Watch out for this tough guy.
