Let's remember this also when evaluating Stroud.
Houston Texans QB C.J. Stroud has been a star throughout OTAs, solidifying a strong case to start for the team in week one against the Ravens. And the No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 draft is turning more heads.
Following Monday's practice, Stroud caught high praise from former Dallas Cowboys QB and current Houston radio host Clint Stoerner who remarked that Stroud is "second to none."
"It's elite, folks," Stoerner said. "It's just a matter of time before C.J. Stroud takes the reigns here."
Stoerner went on to detail the parts of Stroud's game that stuck out most. He labeled his effortlessness, pace and carry on touch throws and ability to change arm slot and speed up his release, to name a few.
Over two years at Ohio State, Stroud tallied 8,123 passing yards and 85 touchdowns with just 12 interceptions en route to a 2022 Heisman finalist bid.
Stoerner himself tossed nearly 7,500 yards and 57 touchdowns in college, en route to playing two seasons for Dallas before turning to radio. While the numbers may not line up with Stroud's, he's got an eye for the position.
And he sees Stroud as a soon-to-be star for a Texans organization that is all but forced to line the rookie up behind center on snap one this fall.
And we're not actually evaluating them, we're just interpreting what others are saying they are seeing. We've only been getting short clips (some in slow motion for effect) of players in training camp. TBH, I'll "like" some of that content posted on this board to play along. But I want to see it for myself at full speed against comparable competition. Not Tank, or whoever that was catching a pass over Cobi Franics, a second year UDFA that has been an on-again off-again practice squad player.Let's remember this also when evaluating Stroud.
Has anyone noticed that we have gotten even less than previous years real-time reporting? In fact, we have receive no information that hasn't been thoroughly filtered...............nothing worthwhile for our own eyes to interpret.............except isolated short clips that are highly selectively plucked out. According to what we are almost made to believe then is that the Texans are having an offseason of only rainbows and unicorns.................must be no QB interceptions, WR drops or wrong routes, DB and LB missed coverages, OL misteps, muffed punts, etc.And we're not actually evaluating them, we're just interpreting what others are saying they are seeing. In short, what Thorn said.

Do you really trust players, coaches and owners to give honest evaluations when they are not subject to fact checking by those not having skin in the game?

As long as the unicorn looks like this lol. It’s OTAs and mini camps. I don’t remember a lot of pertinent info emerging from these. I do remember fans going to training camp and relaying their opinions. I hope we see that again.
In the meantime, what’s so bad aboutand
?

I've noticed a decline in real reporting for several years, now.
It's just the way things are now. The internet opened up so many ways to get news to the public. Teams don't have to deal with news papers, TV & radio being the only outlets anymore. Most of the power has shifted to the teams. If a news source wants access they have to pretty much play ball or be excluded. Hell most of the people involved in reporting from OTAa are on the Texans payroll.I've noticed a decline in real reporting for several years, now.
I went back to an OTA thread from 2008. Most of the information then was from houstontexans.com. In fact, @Texans_Chick encouraged members to go to the team site rather than the Chronicle for the correct information.Hell most of the people involved in reporting from OTAa are on the Texans payroll.

She has a blog on chron.comIs Texans chick still reporting news somewhere? I miss all her stuff.
I'm 55 years old and I have never been more skeptical of people in general, but specifically in media. And for 30 years I was very isolated and cynical drunk.Has anyone noticed that we have gotten even less than previous years real-time reporting? Heck yeahGeneral question re Stroud - if he is in the top half of the QB's in his rookie season, would you be satisfied?
Me - yes.
With his rookie season? Sure. Maybe. Most likely.General question re Stroud - if he is in the top half of the QB's in his rookie season, would you be satisfied?

Can august come yet please ! I want see this dude in action. Finally a QB in houston.
This guy said a similar thing about Baker Mayfield having his best season when he shared a QB room with Keenum. Did n't see a direct quote though. You didn't read the article very carefully.
This is the complete quote from Goff:
“There’s so many things I learned from him on and off the field,” he added. “I think the number one thing that he kind of imparted, he wasn’t super highly touted coming out of college and he made his career by working hard. That hard work is something I tried to grasp as much as I could and pick up little pieces here and there. So, I think that could be one thing that I learned him for sure is his work ethic, everything he’s gotten in this league I think he’s earned and fully deserves.”
.....
Work ethic wasn't the only thing that Goff learned from Keenum; it was just one of many things.
Do we need a class on rookie QB’s and their struggles. Payton Manning is but one such example of many. I don’t care about his “rank” as a rookie per se. what I look for in a rookie is signs that he has the general skill set to be the man and can he make a play a fair amount of time when needed. In other words, does he look competent? Is he improving at recognition, and the mental part of the game? Do the things we saw in college like great accuracy carry over or do his mechanics go out of whack and he sails passes, etc. what about the leadership side? Various intangibles - do they start to show themselves? Does he make a mistake one week, and then show he can make the adjustment the next. Just lots of different things. But I couldn’t care less if the experts think he is 15th or 30th this season.

Not really concerned with ranks in a rookie season. I want to see progression throughout, learning from mistakes, learning to play the game, etc.General question re Stroud - if he is in the top half of the QB's in his rookie season, would you be satisfied?
Me - yes.
It'll definitely be a learning curve so progression is desirable. Not really concerned with ranks in a rookie season. I want to see progression throughout, learning from mistakes, learning to play the game, etc.
And rookie QBs typically don't win a lot of games their rookie season either. Sure there's the outliers, Big Ben 13-0 his rookie season, Dak 13-3, Wilson 11-5, but most are 6 wins or fewer. Herbert 6-9, Allen 5-6, Burrow 2-7-1, Lawrence 3-14, Cam 6-10, Peyton 3-13, Stafford 2-8, even Rodgers was 6-10 the 1st year he started (4th in the league).
So yeah, if Stroud ended up top half this season, you ******* take it all day every day, but I'm not setting the bar so high that if he's not top half or the Texans only win 6 games that it will be a disappointment and I'll fight the idiots on here that will say he's a bust. Rookies struggle much more often that not. Just show me improvement over the course of the season and that he's getting it.

The Purdy learning curve, with the same exact offense? It'll definitely be a learning curve so progression is desirable.
Will it be the same exact offense without Shanahan? The Purdy learning curve, with the same exact offense?
No excuses
Lowered expectations.
Difference is this team has the talent to win in short order. The teams you listed and the QB's you listed did have near the talent around them that Stroud has around him. No excuses

Same principles, look at LaFluer as what I expect the offense to look like. They have the same type talent Green Bay's offense has. Young QB's, really good RB's, WR's are comparable, the Texans should have the better OL. No excuses, with health and decent QB play this is a 10 win team. I think they win 6-7 games. Will it be the same exact offense without Shanahan?
Stroud needs to play better than Mills did in his second season. And capitalize on game winning drives that Mills failed at.
No excuses.
True, expectations should be that Stroud is as good or better than Purdy. After all, Slowik had a big hand in helping develop Purdy. Since Stroud supposedly is more talented than Purdy, expecting less is lowered expectations. Unfortunately if Stroud fails, it will be all Slowik's fault. Even though Slowik has proven he can develop QB's like Purdy. No excuses

I think Caserio finally has a coach who he can agree with and ownership is staying out of the way. How much did the scouting department change?
I never said Purdy. I said Mills’ 2nd season.
Purdy doesn’t even know if he can play like Purdy’s rookie season.
And to say that Slowik developed Purdy without any credit going to Shannahan is being willfully ignorant. You know better.
No excuses.
Are you really going to compare SF and Hou situation with a straight face?
How does that prove Caserio's shortcomings? Or are you like TK that believe's that Caserio should overrule the owner?Proves Caserio can’t punch his way out of a wet paper bag without better leadership around him. See stick go fetch stick.
If you truly believe in Stroud 10 wins with this schedule/coaching staff and offense should be expected.
How does that prove Caserio's shortcomings? Or are you like TK that believe's that Caserio should overrule the owner?
Not at allAre we clear?
Neither.
Talent evaluation skills are not his forte’.
How many times do we need to discuss this?
I’m dealing with acceptance in his role, just long as he’s not making the picks or trading away so *** **** many future picks.
Are we clear?
He’s BAD at it. Is that clear? He's a gm. Talent evaluation IS or should be his forte'.
No. I am not clear.
On paper.Lowered expectations.

Not overrule. Influence, win a debate, convince a lesser intellectual of a better course of action. How does that prove Caserio's shortcomings? Or are you like TK that believe's that Caserio should overrule the owner?
This is why he traded a kings ransom for Will Anderson Jr. A sure thing. He figures a bird in the hand is worth 3 in the bush (when you’re not a confident evaluator of talent). There are numerous examples of him trading away plus value to acquire who he considers, premium talent.Nope. Remains to be seen.
Clear?
