Brooks Reed - signed w/Falcons

I had my choice of jerseys to wear yesterday to the game and decided to wear my #58 Brooks Reed jersey. I felt like the smartest guy at NRG Stadium because I was probably the only guy wearing his jersey and was very proud of him having a great game. That was Brooks' best game since the 2012 Divisional Playoff game against the Ravens where he and Watt had a sensational game.

Brooks was one of my favorite players from our 2011 season. I have always had a soft spot for him and was excited when we drafted him. He looked great and Crennel really seemed to know how to put him in the best spots to get the most out of him. I was very happy at how we seemed to get pressure from lots different sources and places. What do y'all think?
 
The entire defense looked revitalized, especially the front 7. Even DJ Swearinger was out there doing it up big (not as much so in coverage), and Merci even looked more aggressive and better at rushing the passer than he ever has.
 
it was the redskins, we'll see how they perform against better teams.
i'll be interested how they do against short coverage against tight-ends up the middle.
 
Reed had his best game as a Texan - easily. He was playing with his hair on fire. He was an animal out there, and was the 2nd best player on defense. Terrific game. I really, really hope this is the new Brooks Reed and not an anomaly because he can help take our D to a whole new level.

Crennel really dialed up some jailbreaks.

Really enjoyed watching our side of the chess match this week.
 
I'll stop calling him Brooke Reed if he keeps it up, cautiously optimistic. I think him working out with Watt this off-season has helped a lot.
 
It's the defense. Crennels defense is much more exotic. He puts players in position to make plays.

Wades defense was overly simplistic man to man which would be picked apart by elite qbs.

I disagree. On a bootleg play that ran away from him, Reed instantly recognized it and exploded from his shoes to cut off rg3 for sack. Last year Reed would recognize it too late while stumbling toward the containment area. That kind of plays comes from maturity and hard workouts.

This is the first time the Texans special teams have dominated a game on all levels/ returns and defense

This is the best-coached linebacking group I've seen from the Texans. Their coach is MIKE FRICKIN' VRABEL for cryin' out loud.

The offense, though out of sync and under talented at QB, showed excellent poise throughout the game. Gone was the Kubiak-era "WTF!" we grew so accustomed to.

I look for this unit to get even better. They played a well-disciplined game on all sides of the ball Sunday.
 
Reed was awarded one of the Game Balls for his performance. In his interview today, and after watching game film Sunday night, OB said Reed's play was perfectly what he was called on to do. Referring not just to his high-light plays, but to his entire game, he said Reed's performance was a pleasure to watch.
 
Brooks Reed, likely to test market...
The Texans have had meetings or set meetings with many of their pending free agents, but haven't started negotiations with Brooks Reed. The clock is ticking, and their pause might mean Reed hits the market, which would increase the chances the Texans lose him. General manager Rick Smith made it clear yesterday that just because a player gets to free agency, that doesn't mean the Texans don't want him back.

I think he believes he could get a Barwin like contract when even in his best season rush the passer he had half of Barwin's season best in sacks. I won't say we'd be better off without Brooks Reed but he'll look for his payday.
 
I think this says a lot for both Clowney and Mercilus. I thought that Mercilus came along this year. Seemed to me that during the last 6 games he started to "get it". That was a lot more than what was said for Reed.

Clowney may be showing that the rehab is moving along as scheduled.

John Simon also had a better season than Reed IMO.

Put all that together along with what is out there in the draft....writing is on the wall for Reed.

None of those 3 you mentioned play the same position as Reed
 
What I'm saying is we got some good OLBs that can rush the passer. It's a lot harder to replace those guys than a Brooks Reed. I also think Simon can make the switch, I thought during the Steeler game Simon and Mercilus were out there together.

Whitney Mercilus: 767 snaps, 72.2 percent

Brooks Reed: 751 snaps, 70.7 percent

John Simon: 219 snaps, 20.6 percent

Jadeveon Clowney: 142 snaps, 13.4 percent

Ricky Sapp: 22 snaps, 2.1 percent

Jason Ankrah: 16 snaps, 1.5 percent

He showed a lot of good flashes, I thought. I noticed him in a lot of games.

Well, good luck with that. Like you say, Reed doesn't have the numbers that Barwin had.
 
If Reed gets to FA he's gone.

Hopefully Simon can stay healthy and play 16 games next yr. If this happens and depth is added in the draft then Reed wont be missed.

It is because Smith's too incompetent to keep any talent he has, and BoB (did I get that right?) is too cheap to pay for any talent he has. Double whammy. He's as good as gone.

Nope, not at all, Reed would only be kept at a reasonable price. If some team is willing to overpay let them and draft a LB in the draft.

Reed is a solid OLB, but could certainly be upgraded upon. For instance drafting Paul Dawson and signing Justin Durant would be a huge upgrade. You could rush the passer better and be tetter in coverage. I also think if healthy Simon is just as good as Reed.

If you haven't noticed I'm the kinda guy who believes in only paying for elite FA's and drafting young cheap depth behind them. This theory only works if you can add talent in the draft. So far Smith & Co. have only been avg at best and never add elite talent in FA and this is why the Texans are who they are today. A middling franchise at best.

BTW, have you noticed when FA's hit the market they very rarely re-sign with their original team. Or atleast that's my perception.

So if you're signing all this elite talent in FA and and just getting cheap depth in the draft, you're not drafting elite talent like JJ? If you do draft elite talent, then do you let them walk so you can sign an elite FA? How you gonna pay 22 elite guys?

Of course you hope every player drafted is an elite player. That's unrealistic. So you go with the known and hope you can draft 2 elite players a yr and a bunch of Crick/Blue type players with the rest of your picks.

The scenario you described is a problem the Texans have never had to worry about. Having to choose which elite player to let walk.

That worked for the early-aught Yankees. Can't think of another instance where it has, though.

Pretty tough to execute that strategy in a league with a salary cap.
