Brandin Cooks to the Texans

What are the Texans supposed to accomplished this year, in your opinion?
You can keep griping about what the Texans are doing wrong, or come to understand they obviously aren’t trying to accomplish what you think they should be trying to accomplish.

I agree with you, doesn’t look like tanking is on the menu.

I don't necessarily want them to tank.
I want them to be more fiscally conservative.
When your work hours are reduced, you need to watch your spending.

Is Texans Brandin Cooks The Most Underrated WR In NFL?
In seven years, Brandin Cooks never has received the respect he deserves in the NFL
Cole Thompson1 hour ago

HOUSTON -- In a sea of pass-catchers and touchdown machines, Houston Texans wide receiver Brandin Cooks has been forgotten. As the Texans prep for another season, Cooks returns to NRG Stadium as the team's go-to weapon.
The NFL just sees a lowly franchise without a direction, thus casting Cooks to the side in their rankings. And it's not just the NFL, try every major outlet and see if Cooks' name is mentioned in the top 15?
Top 20? Top 25 even? Few will at least give him that respect.

Cooks' career in the NFL has been defined by two things: trades and speed. Since coming out of Oregon State, he has been one of the most consistent No. 2 targets in the game. Last season he proved he can be a No. 1 with the right quarterback.

So, he's good, but not top-20 good, right? That's where the debate begins.

In seven seasons, Cooks has recorded five 1,000-yard seasons through the air. On all four teams, he's passed the 1K mark — twice with both New Orleans and Los Angeles.

Known for his speed and ability to win as a perimeter route-runner, Cooks' game has allowed him to be dangerous in the open field. In six of his seven years, he's averaged at least 13 yards per catch.

In that same span, he tallied at least 60 catches on five different occasions. He's also finished top two in receiving yards and receptions on his roster every season outside of 2019 with the Rams.
THE REST OF THE STORY

Good thing is they dont have to try to tank to be bad.

Kinda like the Rockets this yr.

He must like it down on Kirby

I'm just glad the same people that negotiated the Cunningham/Merciless contracts aren't doing that anymore.
Facts! I just think at some point you get tired of moving around. He's a good football player and you can never have enough of those. I don't care how far you're off from being a playoff team like the Texans. At some point players got to be able to look in the lockerroom and think they have a chance.

Agree.
On the defense, when you saw Watt out there on the field with you, it had to be a boost.
Same with any unit - you see a stud out there with you, you are hopeful.

When players see guys who can't play and they're getting paid, you get funny looks. To me culture is about having a bunch of good ball players. Players don't count other players pocketbook, but when you see a dude who can't play especially at key positions, your so called culture going to suck

Glad to see it, to me at this time seeing what we have in Mills by giving him reliable weapons is worth more than the 2nd that Texans were apparently wanting. I know you could find a WR in the 2nd, maybe even one better than Cooks, but you could not find a guy thats been on the roster, knows the playbook and has a season with Mills in the 2nd.

They couldn't trade Cooks if he didn't want to be traded.

2022 will be Cooks last season playing as a 20-something. 30-year-old WRs in total have (4) 1000 yard seasons over the past 5 years. If there's no guaranteed money after this year, then there is very little risk. Still waiting to see the details.

So, you're happy with the Executive Vice President of Football Operations handling all players contracts today then?

I'm happy with this contract.
So last year they restructure Brandin Cooks contract borrowing $7.5 MM from future years AND cancel the last year of his contract (2023). All so they could this week extend his contract by two years in 2023 and 2024 at twice salary they pay him then. (You just can't make this stuff up)

Someday the Houston Texans Executive Vice President of Football, Jack Easterby is going to have to write a book about how he was able to pizz away more money down the toilet and write some of the worst contracts ever written in the NFL. All Hail Jack Easterby! And the Kool Aid Brigade thinks this is way to the playoffs. All Hail the Brigade, the porn section can be found in aisle 9 in the back.

This may not be over just yet. The Texans could still trade Cooks and agree to pay half of his new contract for a 4th RD draft pick.......Stay Tuned.......

All I know is that Cooks is going to be around a few more years at a fair price and there will be plenty of cap space available next off-season.

BTW, you must not have noticed that WR's with Cooks numbers are getting paid. What would you have paid him?

You could save us all a lot of time if you'd just post a .gif of a crying toddler throwing a tantrum, instead of your verbose and predictable complaints about virtually everything.

First, I would've never restructured his contract in 2021. There was no need to, if you knew what you were doing.

Second, I would've never have cancelled the last year of his contract. That was an act of stupidity.

Third, if I didn't trade him for a 1st or 2nd RD in 2022, I would've have let him playout his old contract at $12.5MM in 2022 and 2023 instead of cancelling then extending the contract at twice the salary. That's just dumb and a total waste of money. And finally, I'd let him become a FA in 2024 and received a 2024 comp pick for his departure at the end of 2023.

I would not try to re-sign him because in 2024 he would be at an age when WRs lose a step and are not the productive WRs they once were.

Now I know you're fond of saying, Oh there will be plenty of cap space next year. That does not excuse the constant pattern of issuing bad contracts and making fiscally irresponsible decisions. Contrary to your popular belief that there will a lot more salary cap space, that is not a license to write frivolous contracts and be fiscally irresponsible with the salary cap and team budget. Spending money unwisely and writing horrible contracts is an act of stupidity or simply a case of having no idea what the hell you are doing. It can only mean you're equally as bad in making bad decisions in other phases of management.

Stop it lol

Brandin Cooks' two-year contract extension has $36 million guaranteed with $19.8 million maximum average annually.

That’s outrageous for an age 30 & 31 WR. What would Bill Belichick do (WWBBD)?

Not this.

Never understood why the Saints traded Cooks. He's exactly the kind of player you want. His veteran leadership is crucial to the Texans' success right now.
Once they traded him, they no longer had the ability to take the top off. He's a good football player who is also a good influence. As the Rams said ***** them picks 😆😆

Except he overpaid for the former Eagles wr who isn't in Cooks lane. What BB is starting to realize by spending all that money last year is Tom Brady made them dudes look better than what they really were.

I disagree because that's the new going rate for wr not in rookie deals. When you say wr loses a step at 30 or 31, that was more in the 80s or 90s, not now. Not to mention if a 4.3 guy loses a step , now he's 4.4 ish which is still really fast. Not to mention, he's a great route runner. He's also a guy who can play all 3 wr spots.

It is now. As I pointed out earlier in the thread, WRs aged 30+ have a total of 4 1000 yard seasons the past 5 years. Losing speed for an OL is no big deal. Losing speed for a WR is a big deal. No one is getting faster as they grow older.

Even 4.5 is still plenty fast.
An experienced guy running 4.6 is still gonna make up for lost speed with cunning and skill.

Just because other bad teams grossly overpay, doesn't make it a good idea.

An experienced guy running 4.6 shouldn't get $36 million guaranteed.

Cook is 28 so why are we talking about receivers 30 and above?
His BD is 9/25 so they'll get a year at 29, a year at 30 and he'll finish the contract at 31 so technically its relevant conversation. I think they over-paid a tad but overall I'm glad a top-tier vet WR is staying with the team and Mills.
