610 reporting trade has been done.

I actually had him going to the Texans in the 5th round in the only mock I created that year. He fit what Kubiak said he liked in RB's - one cut and get up field.

I could never figure out what Smith and O'Brien, later O'Brien and Gaine, then of course O'Brien and Easterby (?) were looking for at any position. I quit trying to predict with O'Brien as HC what they were going to do in the draft after the second draft. Which was a bummer for me because I enjoyed doing mock drafts until then. And I'm not trying knock the Texans for that approach, being somewhat unpredictable can be a good thing when it comes to the draft.
O'Brien likes the bulldozer type of back.
You know, one that can bump into the center's behind and drive him forward. :corrosion:

Dallas is legit? Rubbing my eyes. If they lose to Philly tonight Jones will blow like a volcano! Steelers will chomp on them like two Dobermans tried to on me.
Only legit with a chance to make the playoffs in that historically piss poor division and the Cowboys are probably going to lose with the 7th round (funny given the context of the conversation) rookie QB making his first start.

To be clear he was Texans before Colts...

In 1986 during a spell of unemployment, I would fix up things like vacuum cleaners, couches, coffee tables, etc folks would leave by dumpsters in apartment complex and I would sell to my neighbors. One guy bought $225 in two weeks. Comparable to a seventh rounder but got me through the month.

While I was joking about the curb stuff, I admire people who are hustling and try to get stuff with any reasonable value out early.

Dallas out here running high school offensive plays. Lol both teams looks like crap.

Ah the NFC east, the division that is so bad that it makes people question the entire playoff rules. Seriously that division is so bad I’m pretty sure one of the high end college teams could win it.

I mean seriously we are 1-6 and we’re still considered the best team in Texas.

Imagine if the Texans were in the NFC East......the Texans would run away with the division b/c of a solid 8-8 record, get blown out in the first playoff game, RC would get a 10 year contract, Easterby would become the new GM, and Cal would be thinking he finally got the organization back on track.

Might be worth it to get to beat up the "da boys" more than once in a blue moon.

There was an interesting bit during the Texans’ Hard Knocks where O’Brien and Smith discuss which of 2 players to keep on the roster, one supposedly fits what they are looking for in a player while the other has played better through camp.

I remember giving OB his honeymoon period at the time, but I look on it differently now where Smith is exasperated getting players in through the door that fit what OB has asked for and then deemed not up to task.

It’s something I think is really important, can the HC give the GM an exact picture of what he is looking for at each position, and use that blueprint to sign a team and coach them up. The scouting will always be poor if they don’t know what they are looking for.

It’s like looking at the Patriots gadget players over the years, how many of those have we had through the last 6 years and not a single one of them has done anything worthwhile.

We could be developing a possession receiver of our own instead of guaranteeing Cobb $18million and wasting years of roster spots on Coutee. Same goes for gadget running backs.

OL, we’ve drafted loads, signed FA’s to high price contracts. All deemed not good enough.

RAC has had more of a handle on what he wanted on D, although seems to have gone down a few blind alleys in setting up his team for the modern game (these ILB’s when you look how other teams are able to give too QB’s fits with coverage LB’s).

This is why I keep banging on about getting the GM in first, to manage the organisation. To hold the HC accountable for what he’s asking for.

It’s not acceptable that Davenport, Rankins, XSF all turn out useless when Brooks and Jones have been run out of town.

The bad drafting went back way before BOB entered the building. (Does Trevardo/Brennan Williams ring a Bell) You're right though, the GM/HC need to be on the same page. I have little hope of this happening. I could see DW4/Pancakes pushing for Bienemy and him being the HC even if the GM is chosen 1st regardless of who the new GM wants to hire. This would be another case of Texans orgs dysfunction.

Both Willians got injured, got IRed , and were never right again.
It has nothing to do with player evaluation/drafting.

They had injury problems when they were drafted. Go back and look at CnD's thoughts on that draft. BTW, I was for drafting Brennan Williams at the time. This was just 1 of many examples. Look at the Texans record in the draft in rds 2-4 for the last 15 yrs and if you're honest (You obviously wont be) you will realize why the team currently lacks the depth necessary to be a top tier team. Obviously you think the poor drafting only started with BOB. The oKoYe draft was also especially bad but I'm sure you can somehow explain that draft ways too. Doesn't matter this franchise is doomed for another 4-5 yrs and if they get the GM/HC hires wrong they will be doomed for another decade. Do you have any confidence that the all star search committee will get these hires right?

As you're familiar with it, can you pull the injury report predraft on the Williams?

What's your question?

Just go back and check out injury histories of the player before they were drafted.

If you want to know look them up.

I could, but it's your claim.
Besides, the responsibilty of injury diagnosis belongs to the medical team; it has nothing to do with player evaluation.

This, I can answer you easily.
Kubiak had to replace every single player on the 2005 team with hardly any comp pick nor cap space.
He left with players good enough to go to different teams, giving O'Brien comp picks.
O'Brien left with a bunch of bloated contracts.

The comp picks were to be the next point I was going to make in that O'Brien vs. Kubiak thread, so I had done a fair bit of homework on it.

But surely, if you don't know how bad Billy Bob O'Brien is by now, I don't think it's worth the effort to go through it again.

It's not a claim it's a fact.

Injury history should definitely be part of player evals.

You probably dont believe that part of your own post. Or you're not as in tune with the scouting process as I thought you were.

No, I'm not really interested in that part for every player. No time for that. I simply said, "given that the medical staff check them out".

Speaking of Texans gadget players, one name sums it all up for me - Braxton Miller. Now that’s how you burn a 2nd day draft pick. 2 years in the NFL and done.

Yep. This thread started with great potential, but like too many Texans' opening drives, it quickly turned into a punt.

Speaking of opening drives, just once in the last 30 games have they scored a TD on an opening drive. And that was AJ McCarron in last years week 17 rest the starters game.

This year they haven’t scored a single point on an opening drive. Not even a FG attempt. They’ve crossed the 50 just once (Jacksonville).

Oh that's just AJ McCarron showing off! You know how boys will get when I they get their first start in a season. He knows game plan and I doubt that will happen again. Of course it could be something between him and that Clemson guy...

30 games without an opening drive TD....Ownership should have probably started breathing fire up someone's back side after 10 or so games. THIRTY games?? That is flat out crap.
Not having crossed the 50 yard line this year but once?? Think about that, most of the KO's are touchbacks, so the offense is starting at the 25 yard line. Think about how BAD that is that the offense can't go 26 yards to get across midfield!! That "game plan" offense at its best!

But we have a franchise QB

You thought it would change over night. It still exists because they are still running O’Briens offense. Delvin is still the offensive linemen coach. Need I go on

That is a feature of the ED game plan offense. Probe the defense to see how they react. Instead of taking, you see what they give. At what point do you start a game and instead of trying to establish the run, they would pass to setup the run.

It would be interesting to see the play calls on those opening drives. This sounds like a job for @76Texan

So, serious question, why is it that Watson doesn't just run more?

That's a good question and one that could have a hundred answers.

Considering that this hasn't changed much at all since OB was shown the door - I'd have to say it was Watson's decision (and not necessarily a bad one).

I don't know why they don't incorporate the "threat of him running" at all considering the amount of pressure that would put on a defense - particularly the edge rushers and corners.
It really makes no sense at all to me because its his athleticism that makes him special. But he just seems content to stand in the pocket until he's forced to move.

I could draw up one hell of an offense off of his athletic ability ....

FYI... for those wondering. I wonder what's league average?

2014 - four opening drive TDs
2015 - one opening drive TD
2016 - two opening drive TDs
2017 - three opening drive TDs (two w/ DW4)
2018 - one opening drive TD
2019 - zero
2020 - zero so far
11 opening drive TD's in 6 1/2 years?? Dayum! That's 11 TD's in 103 games? I hate math, but even I know that percentage is really bad. 10%??

Considering his previous injuries, especially early in his career, i think this was a mandate by ob. I think it's been drilled into his head that he's worth more to the team in the pocket than he is on the ir. Sure, ob is gone but his minions remain and im not certain they're willing to deviate much.

Honestly, if we had a top ol I would probably want him in the pocket more. Instead our ol is crap and its a disservice to his talent and the team that he doesn't run more. It would help against the pass rush a lot and we leave a lot of yards on the field because he won't do it.

Any oc worth his salt ought to be able to draw up an effective and creative offense with him. We'll see what happens this off-season. Dw is pretty much the only thing that would lure a legit gm/hc to this franchise about now.

Think run on first down, penalties, fumble, offensive line blowing up.
That ought to sum it up.
Oh, and unimaginative play call on third down.

What I don’t understand is dude knew O’Brien staff were crap right. So why would he expect Watson to perform on the level of Mahomas who landed on a gold mind. Under the crap circumstances one would think Watson is playing better than the crap that was teaching him. Lol

He's been playing at an avg level at best for the last 13 games and white BOB didn't do him any favors DW4'S issues aren't all BOB related.
