3rd pre-season game vs Giants

Woods doesn't have trade value, this isn't Madden. Go talk to fans of other teams and ask if they want to give up draft picks for Robert Woods.
Right, a lot of NFL moves are made by fans.

A lot of the league felt Woods was basically cooked after his year with the Titans and I don't think his starts with us will have dissuaded anyone of that

So Nick was a dumb arse for giving Woods that contract? Were you able to poll the league front offices about how they felt about Woods?

I could be wrong but I think a team would give up a 7th rounder or maybe do a pick swap -Woods and our 7th for their 6th.

A trade doesn’t have to be a blockbuster. The contract could dissuade some teams, but it’s not like he’s making 30 mil or something. It’s doable for many teams. It’s possible he is also kept here, but if they plan to release him, I’m certain Nick will do his best to get a day 3 pick.

Coach said Woods and Hutchinson have been consistent throughout the entire camp. I’m thinking Brown will be the odd man out because he hasn’t been available. The receiver position is finally very deep with this team. Unless you’re a superstar, you can’t miss the time Brown has missed.
I think it would be silly to cut Brown because even a Brown that is hurt for half a season is still more productive than a fully healthy Woods.

That said I can see them throwing him on IR to start the season to open up roster space.

I notice you're trying to nit pick arguments out that you think are there to be made and completely ignoring the rest. A bold strategy but not one I'm interested in engaging with.

I'd be gobsmacked if a team traded a pick for a 32 year old who is clearly on the decline and got starts with an elite QB but couldn't muster even 500 yards.

I don't even think he would get claimed on the waiver wire. I can only see teams letting him pass and then signing him for far less than a 9.7 million cap hit.

When we're looking at WR 6, I feel like they have to bring ST skills to the table. If I had to pick now, I'm going Nico with Hutch as a backup, Diggs & Tank with Mechie as a backup*, and either Sims (returner) or Skowronek (general ST.) IMO I feel like Hutchinson has taken Noah Brown's spot, but I agree that if we can stash him on IR that would be the way to go.

*I'd replace Metchie with Woods if he doesn't continue what he started last week and has another terrible game.

I thought his salary was around ~5 million. I know cap hits can be different in a specific year. And the dude can still play and be that steady chain mover and play ST as well. He's been making plays in camp and is a steady vet presence. I'm not saying he's a difference-maker, but I can see the value of a guy like that. I think he's a bit of a longshot to make it here, which is where the trade scenario comes in. To reiterate, I'm not suggesting Nick can definitely pull off a 7th or another day 3 pick, but I just think your suggestion that it's a total fantasy isn't accurate either. I think it's possible. Likely? Eh...50/50 in my mind. At this point, we'll agree to disagree.

You don't understand how the cap works; if a trade for Woods is made, new team pays his base plus any incentive bonus $ such as per game. Woods base is $6.25 million and he is worth it. He or Metchie would probably have a higher ranking on WR starved teams than on Texans. We would eat ~ $3.25 m.
His savings could be utilized for a very good player at another position or added to ~$18 m we now have.

Barring a very good trade, there is no reason to deal Robert Woods at this time.

He is not worth that for what his production is.

Why do you think this?

How so? I really want to get your point of view?
First, Robert Woods is the epitome of consistent. He's had one career year i i r c, that he was below 10 yards per catch and that was at 9.9. Looking at his stats alone, he averages over a first down every time he catches the ball. Looking at 2023 season his catches dropped to 40 but all of us know that was because of the wide receivers Collins and Tank ahead of him. It wasn't because of ineffectiveness. I think a young Stroud wanted to push his younger teammates Collins, Metchie, Dell and to some extent Hutch as he felt closer to them.

2nd I think Woods is the same security blanket for Stroud as most hope a tight end or a superior receiving running back would be.
3. The discussion is whether Woods is worth his base $ of ~6.25 million to a team trading for him. He is.. based on 1 and 2.
Woods would not be a wide receiver 4 on a team that would trade for him but higher.

Is he worth $9 m cap this season to Houston? That is debatable and I guess we will soon find out. But that wasn't the question. Also, while he may not make wide receiver four, in my opinion, he and Metchie are tied with Metchie getting the nod from me due to his contract and age.

My issue with this is the idea that the only thing that affected Woods' production was Tank and Collins being ahead of him. Tank only played 11 games. Woods started as many games as Tank played. Nico missed 2 games himself and was banged up later. Woods didn't step up. Noah stepped up before he himself got hurt.

When those guys were out the receiving core SUCKED with Woods in it. We had to change up the entire gameplan and try to scrape together wins because Woods was basically a total non factor.

Catching a couple first downs because he can still sit in a zone does not a good receiver make.

I still think about the different route combos we use and then think if we're using Woods here we're basically playing with 10 men (and in a sense 9 because a lot of those concept have someone running a go or a post as a clearing route to open up the others and Woods absolutely can't be running that route) because speed becomes important on those concepts and if the opposition is playing man you're also toast if Woods is out there. Furthermore the team could use some help in the redzone, I'm hoping Mixon can help there. CJ doesn't really struggle marching the ball down the field. Woods is a total non-factor in the redzone.
