2024 TRAINING CAMP DISCUSSION THREAD

Metchie is a guy that needs to step up in games 2 and 3 of the PS. Hutch has pretty obviously improved from year 1 to 2. He had trouble getting open last year, but through his hard work…he seems to be much better in that area. I’m basing that on both camp reports as well as game 1. I though he might be the odd man out, but if he keeps ascending and Metchie doesn’t show up in games or has more drops…gonna be tough. And I’m rooting for Metchie. I didn’t like the pick, but he’s a heck of a kid and was dealt multiple bad cards…and worked hard to overcome. He’s definitely good enough to be on a roster. The question is with the depth here…is it the Texans roster?

WR is the toughest cut, and I suspect at least one trade will help clear the logjam.

Id wait till after the 3rd preseason game to let him and Hutch battle it out and as long as its not some disasterous trade like the astros did when they traded away loperfido and 3 others for that pitcher...i'd be ok with it.

Hutch having a good game in the 1st preseason game tells us nothing. We should expect him to look good against scrubs. He's absolutely talented, like Brevin Jordan. We need to find ways to get the ball in their hands. The reverse is an easy way to do that for Hutchinson.

But I'd like to see him play well against tougher competition. I'd like to see the team trusts him to be where he's supposed to be & get him the ball consistently down field.

Tells us nothing? Ok well I guess we can just cancel the entire preseason then.

Plus you may have missed this part - "I’m basing that on both camp reports as well as game 1". In camp...according to 3rd parties, he is doing well against whoever is out there. I do agree he has to prove it, though, and I also said IF he keeps ascending. These next two games are really vital for him and Metchie to sort out that competition, but in general, I see Metchie and Hutch as two ships passing in the night. But Metch has a chance to turn that around and put his good efforts in practice into actual games. It seems like camp reports are good...but it's got to translate to game day.

Bullock and his tackling concerns during the draft were never about willingness to tackle it was always about technique.

What made things worse was the fact those concerns were glaring the year before as well and it looked the exact same last season.

That said I hope he can work on those things with different coaching and hope the defense swarming means he doesn't have to be the only guy on the ball bringing someone down.

What % of snaps did both Metchie and X play in the Bears game? The only time Metchie was targeted was in the third series once Keenum came in.

How has Hutch pretty obviously improved from Year 1 to Year 2? Based on practices? People have been talking about how good Metchie looks as well.

You might be the only person who thinks Metchie has to do something in pre-season not to get cut/traded because Hutchinson is balling out.

I'm with Porky. Going off reports and the game Hutchinson is pretty ahead of Metchie.

One of Metchie's biggest issues has been catching the ball and even in the most recent practice drops were again a big issue.

Most reporting from camp have said Hutch looks very good and while Metchie looks quicker again dropping the ball has been a problem and he's been dropping down the practice depth chart as well.

Metchie has the inside track, but Hutch is like the underdog horse closing the gap. If that continues…Metchie could be in trouble on a very deep group of WR. I don’t see both making it, but it’s not completely out of the question.

Yes I’ve mentioned several times, he has shaky hands. Job #1 for a WR is to catch the ball. If the coach can’t trust you to come up with it 95% or more of the time…your either riding the bench or cut. I still think if the cuts were today, he would likely be on the roster and Hutch probably not…but this is a fluid race and Hutch is making his case very well so far. Does that continue? Stay tuned!

From camp it even seems like Hutch has the inside track as I'm fairly certain Hutch is with the backups and Metchie is often with the 3s and 4s.

Hutchinson kind of reminds me of Hopkins in a way. He’s not going to be a guy who gets great separation but if you throw it in his direction he’ll find a way to go up and get the football. A sure-handed guy who wins 50/50 balls more often than not. There is a place on this team for him.

A non-update update on Howard.

Huge Update Regarding Health Status of Texans' Starting Right Tackle

Houston Texans right tackle Tytus Howard had a scare at practice earlier this week.

Kade Kimble | 19 Hours Ago

The Houston Texans had a scare earlier this week as starting right tackle Tytus Howard left practice early.

During the practice, Howard didn't finish any drills after going to the blue medical tent. Fans were left wondering if the injury was something that would leave the starting right tackle sidelined for an extended period of time.

Fortunately, Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans cleared the air as the team prepares for their second preseason contest, this time coming against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

“Tytus is good,” Ryans said.

With the Texans playing Friday, it's unknown whether Howard will try and play or not, given he sat out during Wednesday's practice. The team could elect to rest him and ensure a full recovery with another week of ramping up.

It's a unique situation as players like C.J. Stroud, Stefon Diggs and Nico Collins will make an appearance in the exhibition game against the Steelers, which means injuries aren't necessarily a factor when it comes to personnel decisions for the preseason game. Still, with Howard having recently suffered his injury, resting could make the most sense.

“We keep going with our offensive line,” Ryans said. “We’re always moving guys around, having guys play different positions. So whoever is available and ready to go, they’ll be out there for preseason.”

With injuries littering the offensive tackle position, being versatile and flexible with personnel is a great approach as the Texans are mounting for what could be a special season with the franchise hunting its first Super Bowl victory.

So, what was the nature of Howard's injury? Which is now all good.

I heard it’s a minor soft tissue injury that they are not concerned about. DeMeco keeps things close to the vest so I doubt we get much more than that. If this was the regular season he would play tonight but given it’s preseason, I don’t expect to see him out there.

Lengthy article on Click2Houston on Derek Stingley and how he has dominated training camp. Also includes other camp info.

I think Stingley is one of the most pivotal players needed for the Texans to make a Super Bowl run. His ability to lockdown a receiver makes everyone else on the defense better.

It is a patellar tendon injury aggravation.

He did not find a way to go up and get the ball in 2023. 8 of 19 targets is horrible. His average for catch gets him a first down and he does look better this preseason. I'm really hoping you are correct.

Watch him in college. Last regular season 19 targets was too small a sample size. He’s an X WR that needs to get into a rhythm. Eventual Noah Brown replacement as Nico insurance.

We got to see what separates him and Sauce. Both can lock down WRs. But Stingley has the superior ball skills. He “fools” QBs into thinking they have a throwing window which leads to INTs. Whereas Sauce shuts down the window entirely forcing QBs to look away from him.

Interesting point and as much as I’ve ragged on the pick, if your looking at two random guys with those skills…give me the bait and switch guy who gives me more big plays vs. the guy who just locks it down. That said, both types are extremely valuable and I’d take either one any day of the week. At this point it’s all about health for Sting. Crossing my fingers but he scares the daylights out of me in terms of being able to stay on the field. Durability is huge for him this year.

The offensive line tonight is expected to consist of LT Blake Fisher, LG Kenyon Green, C Juice Scruggs, RG Shaq Mason, RT Nick Broeker.
Same line as against the Bears right? I actually thought they did quite well.

I'm guessing the Steelers aren't playing their starters though as it's only their first pre season game and if they do it's probably only for a series or so.

The left side did good. The right side had its issues, as far as the "starters" went.

DeMeco Ryans praises Mario Edwards Jr. after his Friday night performance in Pittsburgh
By Mike Florio
Published August 10, 2024 01:15 PM

In his tenth year, defensive tackle Mario Edwards Jr. has moved around, a lot. In his new home, he’s quickly thriving.

Edwards, originally a second-round pick of the Raiders in 2015, signed in March with the Texans. On Friday night in Pittsburgh, the first-stringer had 0.5 sacks, two tackles for loss, and a quarterback hit.

“Mario has been disruptive all camp,” coach DeMeco Ryans told reporters after the game. “And I wouldn’t have expected anything different from him. He showed up today playing on their side of the line of scrimmage and being disruptive. That’s what we need from all of our guys up front. I’m very pleased what Mario did tonight.”

After three years with the Raiders, Edwards spent one with the Giants, one with the Saints, two with the Bears, one with the Jaguars, and one with the Seahawks.

And so, while the Texans have acquired bigger names (Stefon Diggs, Joe Mixon, Danielle Hunter) in their effort to improve on last year’s final-eight finish, Edwards could help make a big major difference for Houston’s defense.
If he does, it’ll be a great return on the Texans’ one-year, $1.65 million investment.
