2024 Free Agency

I don’t think Stroud cares about contracts. Stroud just wants a guy who can catch. It’s up to Caserio to make it work.

Let’s go get Diggs!

Which is why football players don't make decisions on other players. Dell was a different story because it was only 3rd and I'm sure they already had their eyes on him. Long as Shroud has targets and a run game to help then he will be happy.

I don't really give a **** how good Stroud is. I don't want him chiming in in every roster move and management and coaching concerns. He's a player. We've seen way too many football and basketball players hold team hostages with their demands.

No thanks.
Unless they are from Ohio State.
I dare say CJs extra insight may be valuable about some of his ex team mates - especially on the offensive side.

This is true. How much longer is Aaron Rodgers going to drag Randall Cobb and Nathaniel Hackett around with him?

In a draft known to be deep at WR we most likely can get another stud receiver that way!
Yes, and Noah Brown showed last year he can be a good stop gap if that rookie takes some time to get up to speed.

If it came down to a choice between paying big money to a FA/Trade acquisition or getting a long term deal worked out for Nico Collins I like Collins’ development curve and hope he could get even better in his 2nd season with decent QB play.

If you have 40 minutes, full Nick c interview

I love that the McNair's have backed off of the Not Texans Worthy stance

For the last time no McNair at any point in time ever said that. It was Matt Schaub talking about Ndamukong Suh, you know the guy that kicked Schaub in the balls, when asked about him joining the team.

thanks for posting!
It's a great interview and one gets a very clear picture of how Nick Caserio operates and what he values. For anyone interested in that, I recommend spending the time.

For me, I am 100% on the Nick Caserio bandwagon.

I don’t think he was chiming in on all the roster moves unless I’ve been missing something. Demanding is one thing and I agree wholeheartedly. I’d still want Stroud’s input though. Heck I’d even want Ward’s input on what he thinks could help gel that secondary.

Wouldn’t you want players input in that capacity? Or are you taking a hard line stance that they need to STFU and play? There’s no right or wrong answer here. Genuinely curious.

I think there's a difference between "hey how do you think you'd play with xyz" "are you familiar with xyz" "what do you think this team/unit needs" and something more than that. More than that would cause players to cause drama on and off the field, hold attachment even in the case of poor performance, force player movement etc. That's what I don't want. Ultimately I don't want to cater to whims of superstars.

I don't have a problem with asking players questions like "We're thinking of trying for X, what do you think about him?" or "Hey you played with X in college what's your feedback as a teammate?"

What I worry about, and not really talking about Stroud just in general, is when a star player demands that X be brought on the team or if X is traded they stop putting as much effort in.

I'm reminded of Harden with the Rockets, they catered to him every way they could and brought in everyone he wanted that they could and he still jumped ship soon as he thought the grass was greener. Or in the NFL Jets trying to make Rodgers happy with bringing in his wish list and then he goes down and they are stuck with a bunch of guys and contracts that have to have Rodgers to make work.

It's the same reasons HC don't negotiate contracts. Coaches and Players are focused on just the next season and will go all in every year if they could. That's fine as that's their job to focus on the season but GMs have to look 3-5 years down the road and keep the team out of cap and draft hell every year. So that means not signing that mega star free agent this year so you don't have to cut 5 guys next year.

The only position the Texans are clearly worse after a week into FA is DT. I still have no earthly idea why you trade Collins for a pack of chewing gum. Nonsensical without a move in place to bring in Aric or some other piece. There’s nobody left they can sign that is as good as Collins and it’s not like Collins is an all-pro, but he’s a steady, generally healthy decent starter. And then you turn around and low ball Rankins, who is a level above Collins imho and a high quality starter.

So you lose both starters and replace them with guys a level or two below the guys you lost. Someone make sense of this nonsense. At this point, DT is job #1 in the draft.

From the Caserio interview, it was pretty clear when he was asked about Collins that they wanted to move on from him. He was never part of their plan for 2024. I don't know exactly why. Also, it is the only position where he clearly stated that they were not done addiing to in free agency.

It's the healthy part that was in question. As @CloakNNNdagger mentioned, Collins has a degenerative hip issue. Collins did have his most productive season in 2023 (5 sacks, 28 pressures). But was a no show in the playoffs, possibly indicating his hip was acting up.

Autry can play inside on passing downs. And the draft is coming up. Are there other DTs available once the draft is over? Very possible. So I won't rush to judgement on this. I don't even think this is the Texans biggest issue at the moment.

Best article on what we are getting with Edwards. He has played 3 tech through 9 tech, standup, hand down and has always been a plus run stopper on the edge. Low key signing that could be a major plus for the season. This isn’t just a depth add in my opinion.

This is to you and Lucky really. Why sign Collins to an extension last offseason then? Was the hip a new issue?

This is Caserio talking from an interview:

5:56...the day starts on Monday it goes pretty quick but and then players come off the board you have agreements in place but I
6:03
would say the one thing you have to be careful of is sometimes even though there's agreements in place they really
6:08
don't manifest themselves until actually Wednesday when you can actually I would say sign the contract or go through the
6:16
medical process and just make sure that you have the player um I'd say just it just seemed this year maybe more than
6:23
years past there was a little bit more movement relative to player making
6:28
commitment one place and then you kind of saw a change of tune or change of heart which goes back to what I said a little bit earlier you just can't get
6:34
too fixated if you lose a player then you just have to go to the next player so I think what you try to do is after...

I think one of those players Caserio is talking about is Arik. Remember it was a forgone conclusion he'd be a Texan. It was assumed we'd put out some type of feelers and had an arrangement in place that He'd sign here once released.

It's possible that the Texans made that deal with that in mind, but once he hit the open market and saw the contract he was offered from another team he just couldn't turn it down.

Either way I think they were ok with losing Collins.

He's now on his 6th team, which doesn't exactly speak to him being much more than JAG. I think he pretty much fits the exact definition of a depth piece, and he'll likely be on a 7th team next year. I remember him from the Titans specifically. Decent, but not great player. He's JAG or slightly above JAG. But it's cool. He's got some talent as a guy who can play when needed and help stop the run. There's value in that, but I'd rather sign the guy we got from Philly in-season last year. I thought he did a good job. Someone help me with the name—I'm getting old, apparently, lol.

Barnett I wanted back too. What I meant by not just depth is he isn’t just a warm body like some 2nd and 3rd stringers in the league. He actually can show up in a game once a twice each week, and that once or twice may be all we need with the stars we have. I would prefer him over Hinish or Lopez is my point (my how far we have come!)

Mario Edwards is a guy that's never been out of the league since he came in as a rookie in 2015. Still, he's someone that's never had much of an impact. Edwards may make this team. But if he's getting more than 33% of the snaps, the Texans are having injury problems.

I think DeMeco leaned heavily on Nick's evaluations in regard to returning players in 2023. Once he got to see Collins in person every week, Ryans cooled on him.

Edwards is a quality depth piece on the DL. Can count on him to play 30-40% of snaps along the DL and not be a liability.

As far as just edge goes, have to assume Horton will be on inactive list this season battling cancer. That leaves Autry and Myjai Sanders. Would really like to see Myjai Sanders make a year 3 leap and take control of that “designated pass rusher” role Ogbo used to play.

As it stands, the edge rotation looks set with Anderson/Hunter starting and Autry/Edwards/Sanders subbing in as needed.

If a guy like Darius Robinson is at 42 he’d be too good to pass up imo. But I no longer see edge as a need. It’s a strength of this team.

I think Settle and Fukasi can be the run stoppers they need. So, I would be happy adding an athletic pass rushing DT like Fiske in the 2nd or Logan Lee later in the draft.

Thanks for the input, guys. That makes sense Lucky. And I appreciate your POV JWL.

I always enjoy chopping it up with you guys and many others, and I learn more here than anywhere else I go. I appreciate all of you!
I think Ryans saw Collins as a good player but very replaceable. Can't fix everything in one off-season. This yr Collins is replaceable.

I think Robinson could easily play on the interior even against the run. If he wanted to he could put on 10-15 lbs and be a true 300 pounder or he could keep around his current weight and be more versatile.

I see Robinson as a guy who could develop into a Greenard type player. Which is a quality starter when healthy.
