2024 Free Agency

Who is going to make that trade with the Texans? The Texans 2025 1st will likely be in the bottom 10. The Texans would probably have to throw in their 3rd round pick.

Hypothetically, I think there will be teams sitting picking in the 40s who would trade that pick away for a 2025 1st that they suspect will be in the 20s, but I don't know that for sure.

That hasn't happened in years. Bobby Beathard and the Chargers back in the '90s.

Just playing around with draft value. Obviously, you need other teams to want to do business, but:

trade 23 to Baltimore for 30 and 93
trade 2025 1st and 123 for Chargers 37
trade 59, 93, and 127 for Minnesota's 42

Result:
loss of 2025 1st... but here are the 2024 picks: 30, 37, 42 (WR, OT, CB in some order then 86 for RB, probably)

Love this

This could possibly happen.

Seems a bit far fetched. Madden-like

Texans DE Danielle Hunter’s two-year, $49 million deal.

• $21 million signing bonus.
• $8 million base in ’24, fully guaranteed.
• $19 million base in ’25, fully guaranteed.
• $500K in per-game roster bonuses each year.
• $1 million Pro Bowl incentive each year.
$8 m base + 10.5 prorated signing = 18.5 cap hit.

To clarify, the .5 m roster bonus is if player is on roster each game NOT that he gets .5 m each game. That has been a question I've seen other sites. Also, throwing out info, a roster bonus can be changed to a signing bonus and prorated.

The roster and probowl bonus should be considered LTBE ( likely to be earned) and count against 2024 cap.

Thanks for posting. Where did you get this info? It appears to be from CBS rather than over the cap or spot rac.

So, cap hit of about 20 this year.. instead of the 25 we were assuming.

My homie posted it facebook messenger.

your opinion is now where near facts. There are plenty of people to include professionals that agree Barkley is ELITE talent.
My facts are his ypc average has been under 4. That's not opinion, that's a fact. Show me where an elite back avg under 4 ypc over a 3 yr. I'll wait

so your going to blatantly disregard his speed, vision, hands and blocking ability and also act like his team and oline werent trash and had no other weapons other than him...like I said in an earlier post..you have lost all credibility and I will no longer waste any more time on your idiotic nor moronic posts.

wow thats crazy, but in same article they admit that no one will ever wear those numbers again, LOL...so retired but not "retired". Got it. LOL

If Watt came out and said let the home town boy that plays the same position and is a key part of the SB push wear 99 then they will let him wear 99.

You still haven't answered my question. On the side note, Henry oline was trash and he still broke tackles, yards after contact and his td,yds, and ypcatch were higher. So what else were you talking about? 😆😆

Wow, I can't believe they got Hunter and for that price! Considering the Giants had to give up a 2nd and 5th to get Burns and spend 30m apy on him for 5 years, this is a hell of a deal! Really happy to see that, but I hope he stays more than 2 years. Him and Will Anderson are gonna wreck shop!

Go get another DT, CB, S and we are good to go!

the only thing I’m not happy with is the OL. We really need to add talent. Would have loved Morse for 2 year 10 million. If we’re going to have two soft OTs at least beef up the interior. Looking forward to seeing improvement there.

There were so many injuries last year we really don't know what we have other than one of the best LT's in the game

All the free agent moves means they can focus on the line if they feel it's needed but honestly as @JB said last year we had pretty much a patch work line all sesson with only Tunsil being remotely consistent and CJ still carved up defenses.

Oh yeah forgot we were playing Dallas this year. Honestly don't remember the last time I was so looking forward to a game. Hope DeMeco and the boys show them not only aren't they American's team any more they aren't even Texas' team any more.
With them about to lose their all pro LT, and have no running back at the moment...our Dline should be able to eat all game and hopefully make Dak have a usual Dak game w/ a bunch of turnovers and garbage time yardage at the end.

…..and the Texans would like to roll into this season thinking a patch-work OL is okay b/c Stroud can still get things done behind it. Hmmmm, that’s all fine and dandy until CJ misses a half season or full season…..then the screams would be coming down like rain that Caserio didn’t address this weakness in the off-season and should be shown the door.

Defense has been addressed. Caserio and Ryans mentioned that the Texans would be addressing the run game shortcomings which to date means they were not satisfied with RT which fell way short. Howard is still injured with no definitive date of return and Fant is a FA. The lack of attention to the OL during the free agency period could mean C&R are planning to address this in the draft and my guess is, sooner than later.

The problem with addressing the O-line is: there is so much uncertainty. Kenyon Greene? Howard? Who will be the center?

we have invested a ton in the oline - and at times it looked great last season. And at times it looked horrible.
So if we get healthy and can stay healthy our oline could be a big strength for us. If not or if the young guys don’t develope as we want it may derail our whole season.
I am fine with that gamble, but I don’t feel comfortable.

Texans’ Stroud takes beating in opener, sacked five times in 25-9 loss to Ravens

Texans QB C.J. Stroud in concussion protocol following loss to Jets

Despite Texans leading NFL in sacks allowed, C.J. Stroud still thriving: ‘This kid is made of all the right stuff’

After shoulder injury, Texans rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud emphasizes he’s nearly 100 percent, ready for Jaguars game

Texans rookie passed for 384 yards despite being sacked six times, hit nine times overall in loss to Colts

I don’t want to read headlines like this all year in 2024. We finally seem to have a legit QB and all I hear is it’s ok the OL had a lot of injuries last year. FK that. I don’t care about excuses. Get this young man the best protection possible. And get him experienced OL that can maul in the run game as well. There is plenty of money left and protecting him and giving him a legit run game should be priority number one.

at least no one used the age old dumb as fk argument, we have already invested too much in the OL to spend anymore. God I hate that!

we have no real answer at LG or C. Don’t want to wait and see if one of the young guys we drafted can pan out while risking Strouds health. Sorry that just seems stupid to me.

Could someone please point out where I, or anyone for that matter, said the Oline was fine? No one, including the Texans, were happy with the line last year but they went to war with the army they had. I don't blame them for not dumping a bunch of assets, like cap space, into the line first because as others have said we don't truly know what we even have because it was so patch work but in other areas, like RB or DE, we knew we had holes that needed to be filled and no current way to fill them so yeah those had to be addressed first.

Way people talk about "invest more into the offensive line" sounds like they think its plug and play but its very much not. You could spend all the capital you have and get a line of nothing but pro bowl guys but if they can't mesh well together then you might as well put paper dolls on the line. Like wise you can have a group of guys that are just ok but they play like they are part of a hive mind and they will look like a steel wall. Fact is we have invested a ton into the line often to the determent of other parts of the team and this isn't a problem that can be fixed by just throwing more bodies at it. At some point there has to be stability and you have to give them a chance to learn to play together without swapping guys out and moving them around every game. I'm not saying that point is now and I would not be at all against bringing in a couple more guys, especially a RT, but at the same time there has to be a glass chewing period where you just do the best you can until it clicks.

I think this pretty much changed as the season progressed. Teams began by teeing off on our OL and hitting Stroud early, he then established that he could get the ball out real fast throwing receivers open with anticipation and beat the rush, that meant they had to ease off on pressure and play more coverage, then he showed he could beat that also.

Late season he was presented with a new challenge as teams began to take away the middle of the field, there was a couple of weeks missed due to injury and then a soft schedule at the end of the season that leaves open the question of whether he’d truly answered that question, but having lost Dell to injury, a faltering running game and the fact the team he lost to was the Ravens who looked real good at the time, I’m unconcerned.

The time to move on from the mega contract OL is not this season, Tunsil/Howard/Mason are vet precences while we bring on whichever young players take up the LG/C positions. The time to move to rookies at the other OL positions will come in the next 2 offseason, IMHO.

Yep, you can not have this kid go through the wringer like that again and expect him to be available for all 17 games or have a long illustrious career.
I don't think we can fully fix our line this year so having a reliable ground game will be key.
I expect Texans will bring in another vet and let someone else walk.
DR has said the Dline is the "engine" of the team and they are obviously trying to fix that this off-season so a big effort to fix the Oline may have to wait for next year.
In the meantime, the ground game is a quick bandaid as is a reliable receiver corp and perhaps the one OL.

Agree except in regards to Howard, reading @CloakNNNdagger thoughts on him in the injury thread he could be out the entire 2024 season, or knowing the Texans doctors, he could play game 1. Either way that is to much uncertainty at to important a spot so I would like them to bring in a vet RT if they can find a decent one at a good price. Doesn't have to be Tunsil level since its right and not left but a good one that can learn quickly and start fitting in with the rest of the line.

I'll say IMO the Howard contract was Caserio's biggest miss but hey, even Babe Ruth got struck out at times.

The two RTs I had my eye on, Onwenu and Eluemunor, both signed yesterday.Trent Brown is still available, but probably the best option to sign a veteran RT is to resign George Fant, who is still available. If we don't sign a FA, maybe this week, we'll definitely have to address the position in the draft. And would you be liking a second day or third day rookie starting and protecting Stroud? If we go the draft route, it really should be at 1-23. And I don't particularly like this idea, although a good prospect should be available there. Signing Fant is probably the best way to go.

Agreed, ironically we draft Howard at 1-23. While I like Brown better overall Fant has the advantage of already being in the system and not needing to learn as much. Plus he was solid last year and with a year under his belt with the Texans he should do better. Though truth be told looking over the list of free agent tackles vs what is in the draft pipeline ultimately draft might be the better way to go especially since so many QBs are predicted to come off the board fast so that will cause other positions to drop.
