2024 Draft Talk

Yep, that draft turned out pretty well to not have 1st or 2nd rd picks

Mills
Collins
Jordan
Cashman

What more did fans expect?
What does Cashman have to do with the 2021 draft? He was a 2019 draft choice by the Jets. He was traded to the Texans in 2022. The draft choice traded was in 2023. The pick ended up in the possession of the Packers who selected Anders Carlson, a K from Auburn, with 6.207.

I thought they traded a 2021 6th for Cashman, my bad. The trade made the 2023 draft even better.

Any possible FA adds out there like Cashman that Caserio can take a chance on a talented but injured LB? I know you dont like trading late rd picks for players, but this season would be lost without guys like Cashman and the OL depth additions.

Let me roll this one by y’all:

Texans go DL shopping in UFA. DB’s are a focus along with a dual threat at LB. One of the more important selections is RB, Trey Benson.

Personally, Caserio and Ryans need only to get Noah Brown and Dalton Schultz signed to new contracts. As for this season, the offense should find ways to get both Metchie and Hutchinson more involved.

Collins, Dell, Brown, Wood, Metchie, Hutchinson, and Schultz have the potential to be a really good group. I would sign TE- Hunter Henry (UFA) to complete this receiving group.

I'd let Brevin Jordan go and let "Q" complete the TE position.

WR's Wayne and Sims would get their shot to continue and impress the team.

It's DB's and RB- Trey Benson (Florida State) for me.
Why would you let Brevin go for Q? It's not like Q has done anything either. There are still glimpses of Jordan, but he can't seem to stay healthy either.
Not a fan of Hunter Henry if I already have Schultz. I like Benson, but he tore his knee to shreds a year or so ago. I do understand rbs are 1 contract guys. I like a back like Bucky Irving of Oregon as a Etienne type of guy. Very, very explosive in run and pass game.

I also like Bucky Irving, but when you have a man of Benson's size (6-1 @ 223 lbs) who can pop a projected 4.37-40.....that makes me look a little deeper. Benson is seen as a ZBS runner who uses his eyes and speed to find the cut back lanes, plus he has decent hands.

I'd like to have two decent and respected TE's on the roster. First, I don't think Henry will command the kind of contract he had in NE and Belichick isn't the type to give him a raise to retain his services. If his price comes down and Schultz's asking price stays reasonable....I wouldn't mind the investment. If it comes down to signing one, then it's Schultz without a doubt. He's been better than expected and should only get better in season two.

Benson runs too straight up for my liking.

Benson runs too straight up for my liking.
This doesn't bother me, plenty of RB's have had an upright running style. My questions are
1. Does he have a feel for the ZBS style of running
2. Can he pickup short yardage with his style of running.
3. Is he good in pass pro.
4. Does he have good hands catching the ball.
5. Does he have the aptitude to be taught the nuances of running pass routes.

If he's got all of these things then he's worthy of a 1st rd pick. Although I think he falls to the top-middle of the 2nd. A true difference maker and that's what this team should be looking for.

Only thing is if you trade up to get Benson then you probably will miss out on the WR/DT depth part of this class.

If I was Ryans and Caserio what I might do is look at signing Hunter/ Wilkins even if this means letting Schultz walk. Then drafting the best CB available in the 1st rd.

1. Cooper DeJohn
2. Benson
4. Best TE
4. Best WR

FA, Cashman, Rankins, Hunter, Wilkins, Henry.

I've never been comfortable with Amendola. I would be a lot more comfortable with Robbie Gould or Matthew Wright.

BTW, what do you think about Irving as a Texan? Is the Ducks TE a Sr., I like that guy, not Herbert's brother.
Like both. Thank god Schultz has been a gift. Slowick would like to add all around TE who excells in pass pro and run blocking with good hands. This is probably best Duck team in school history. Friday night game vs Huskies should be epic, get a good look @ a lot of draft prospects. UW WR Rome Odunze is my dream pick for the Texans 1st rd (Browns selection, hence hope they go downhill rest of season to have a shot on him. He would set WR room for Stroud to excel even more for years and years to come).

Love Odunze and talent wise he would be a steal.

What would you think about drafting a CB and a safety and adding difference makers like Wilkins and Hunter in fa? That would make for a very stout defense.

I'm terrible at evaluating DB's, any worth 1-20ish?

Hunter is an absolute beast. They need to resign Greenard too, not sure where the get enough cap relief to do that, but let’s hope they’re creative. Good corner group in 20th range, Cooper DeJean, Iowa would be a great fit. Physical, smart can play every position 6-1 205. Kalen King, Penn State, plus tools very athletic. Terrion Arnold, Alabama, you know well coached and having a great season. This is actually a deep class.

After thinking about this, I would let Schultz, Greenard etc... walk. Bring back Cashman and Rankins. Sign Hunter and Wilkins in FA and draft a developmental edge like Jalyx Hunt. Keep this guy at home. Depending on what Barnett has left I would try to keep him too. In other words there's not an edge I would keep on this team next yr other than WA unless Barnett plays well.

I'm thinking this draft.

Rd.1 DeJohn
Rd.2 Benson
Rd.3 Stover or the best WR that falls in the draft if he's really good. Somebody like your Ducks WR.
Rd.4 Jahiem Bell
Rd.4 Jalyx Hunt

I would also bring Griffin back on the cheap, and sign a cheap vet FA safety along with LB Burks from the 49ers.

But I'm signing the 2 big guys in FA regardless if I lose everybody but Cashman in FA. Improve the DL and pass rush, get a stud RB and this team will look like a contender with better OL health. Thoughts?

Sorry mods I didn't realize this wasn't in the draft section. Please move.

I can get with Wilkins, but he's going to get the tag and he's going to eclipse the latest dt value. That's nothing to fear since he does play every snap. If the get Wilkins or the DT from Ravens, I would let Rankins walk. I would draft a dt in the 3rd rd. Keep Cashman.
I like Benson, but I think you can get the same player in the 3rd rd. In all honesty, they could sign a Henry or Cook for 5m for a couple of years and revisit the rb situation in a couple of years. All in all, I know they still need alot of help on the defense.

I know they need a lot of help on the defense, if Hunter and Wilkins are signed, then I keep Davis (who I think has played well this year) and Hinish as backups. Plus maybe drafting a DT to develop later in the draft.

Tell me what you think of Jalyx Hunt edge HBU, I've got him as my developmental edge in the 4th. Guys got a feel of the Oklahoma Edge that played with the Texans last yr and the Browns this year Ok....

1. DeJohn
2. Benson
3. Dumas Johnson LB Georgia
4. Jaheim Bell
5. Jalyx Hunt DE Houston Baptist.

Re-sign Cashman and put him at MLB. I thought he's looked pretty good there the last couple of seasons.

Defense

DT Wilkins, Collins, Davis, Hinish

Edge WA, Hunter, Barnett, Hunt.

LB Harris, Cashman, Dumas Johnson, TooToo, Hewitt, Hansen, Late rd pick.

CB's Stingley, DeJohn, Griffin, Thomas, King, Late rd developmental guy.

Offense

QB Stroud, Mills, Keenum

RB's Benson, Singletary, O, Pierce if I couldn't trade him.

WR's Same as this yr, add a late rd guy like Whittington or Anias Smith. Smith plays a lot like Dell.

TE Hunter Henry, Bell, Saubert, Jordan or Q.

OT Tunsil, Howard, Jones, Developmental guy.

IOL Mason, Green, Scruggs, Patterson, Deiter, Green

That's a pretty good team.

Hinish shouldn't see the field unless injury. He's not even depth honestly. I'm not letting a productive player the team drafted walk out the door in Greenard. They have developmental players already in Sanders and Horton at de. I don't see Henry as an upgrade to Schultz. I'm probably getting my rb in the 3rd rd.

Wilkins is top 5 good actually. I've been in the Madubike train for a minute now
Donald
Q. Williams
Simmons
C. Jones
Madubuike
Buckner
Allen
Vita Vea

Maybe a few others. Payne, probably. I'd pay all of those guys before Wilkins.

I'm not a fan of spending money on injured players. Greenard has only been healthy in his contract yr. Sign him at your own risk. I would rather spend his money plus more on a difference maker like Hunter.

Horton is a developmental guy but apparently he has issues, can't depend on him. Sanders is a guy that probably won't be on the team next year. If they thought much of him at all they probably wouldn't have signed Barnett and activated Hyder.

You probably can sign Hunter for 8-10 mil vs Schultz for 13-15 mil. I want to put that savings towards bringing in Wilkins.

Check Hunt out and tell me what you think of him as a prospect. He's got a lot of upside.

Why? Wilkins is good, but not top 5 DT good. I would pursue Justin Madubuike of the Ravens before Wilkins.
I'm scared of Madubuike's injury history vs Wilkins. But I would be fine with him if that's who Ryans wants.

Plus Wilkins name is easier to spell.😂

I would put Wilkins up there with these guys.

Jones
Donald
Williams
Lawrence
Simmons
Wilkins
Buckner.

These guys are all top tier difference makers and leaders on their teams.

If hunter is who you think he is, he's costing way more than 8-10m. Sanders is still on a 3rd rd draft pick contract. You pay Greenard and just put % snaps bonuses in his contract. I'm not giving Schultz more than 8m per. Madubike doesn't have a long injury history. Either way, I would sign one and draft one.

I know he's going to cost way more than that. I'm putting that 8 mil saved towards the 25 mil that Hunter is going to get. I think Wilkins is going to get 25 mil too. I'm good with paying these guys that much and re-signing Cashman. Then re-signing depth pieces like Singletary, Griffin a cheaper safety etc. I also let Nelson walk and draft a CB. This defense would be dominant over the next 5 years and this is doable. I mean the 49ers signed Hargrave last off season.

Nelson is your best cb who has been valuable and durable, why would you let him walk? I'm down with drafting a safety or cb, but I wouldn't let Nelson go especially with Stingley injury history? I don't think I would offer Wilkins 25m. It's not my money, but if it came to that, I would prefer to draft Sweat in the 1st rd and resign Rankins or find another vet to mix in.

I like Sweat, but I don’t believe he’s a 1st round talent. I’d go for him on day 2.

We have different visions.

I want to spend money on the front 4. WA/Collins/Wilkins/Hunter and draft the CB's to go with Stingley along with signing cheap FA's like Nelson/Thomas were and Griffin is.

DeJohn/Stingley/King/cheap FA/late rd pick/Holloman.

The 49ers spent big money on their DL and filled their secondary in. I hope Ryans does the same thing.

He's a 1st rd talent. With him, it depends on his weight and how many snaps he can play. I mean Jordan Davis of Georgia went 15. He's a better pass rusher/ pocket collapse guy than him.

They only spent big money on dl this offseason because Kinlaw has been avg.

Are you forgetting that the 49ers built their DL with several very high draft picks over years of sucking real bad?
Kinda like the Texans?

Did they suck when they drafted Kinlaw or signed Hargrave?

Bottom line is what would be different if Caserio drafted Sweat and signed Hunter than what the 49ers did. Draft a young guy and sign a vet.

Only difference is I'm hoping they spend money they're going to have on 2 vets instead of 1 and draft the best CB available in the 1st rd. Spend the money that you have available and spend a couple of high picks to continue rebuilding the defense. Seems like a smart thing to do. IMHO. How good would this team look with a dominant defense? They've got the money and picks to make this happen this off-season.

I think another team would be willing to pay Greenard what the Texans would and not have a clause about percentage of snaps.

This could be a year of getting compensatory pics in 2025 by allowing some of our free agents go to other teams. I just don't see Caserio and Ryans putting out much for high priced free agents this offseason. They have been very successful with non-day-one draft picks plus vets acquired for inexpensive one and two year contract deals to give up that approach.

I can see Nelson, Deiter, Greenard, Schultz, Hughes, Rankins, Noah Brown and Fants not returning.

Here's a list of the top 20 (actually 50) Seniors in the 2024 draft from Chad Reuter of NFL.com

This Senior class is a strong one. And its depth makes the Day 2 picks even more valuable.
Latu, Odunze and Jaden Daniels have moved themselves up boards with this season.

Latu, Odunze and Jaden Daniels have moved themselves up boards with this season.
Latu has played well the past 2 seasons at UCLA. But I have to wonder if NFL teams are going to pass him on a physical. His neck injury at Washington was considered career ending. Is a team going to spend a 1st round pick on a guy who is one hit from a devastating injury? I think Latu will still be on the board at the start of Day 2.

I think Latu has shown those teams with questions after his 2023 season. I will be stunned if he drops below top 16.
