2023 TEXANS DRAFT DISCUSSION

I'm cracking up watching the ESPN pundits melting down because the Texans might not take a QB at #2 like they have been saying they should for weeks now. They seem to be even more frustrated because they have NO idea what the Texans are planning to do with #2. lol

Throughout this time leading up to the draft, I've been of the opinion that they should take Anderson at #2 or trade down for more late 20, early 30 picks & load up on defensive players & two of the best IOL with those picks. But, I'm starting to feel that taking Bijan Robinson at #12 would be a really smart move. If they acquire the two best IOL (Schmitz & Torrence, imo), they could use this next year as a time to get their running game fully implemented before drafting their franchise QB next year. Adding Robinson would be the only change I would make to my draft plans for this year.

Bengals won 2 games no matter your division. Their talent pool was bad, go look ar the production of said players. Green was washed and wanted out injured, Ross was pretty much a bust before we get to the ol. You're acting like the Texans fielded XFL players or something. In today nfl where half the teams make the playoffs from the year before are new is because of parity. The Dolphins gutted their roster, won 5 games before winning 10. Again, 5 years to rebuild was pre salary cap nfl rebuild, not post salary and rookie cap nfl. Plus none of those had 2 1st rd picks 3 years in a row

I know you aren’t asking for my opinion but I am going to add this:

The Bengals had a first round draft pick there first year of rebuild if that’s what you want to call it. The Texans only had a third.

The following year the Texans had a first, but where was the Joe Burrow comparative player? Last years QB class has underwhelmed.

This year it is looking like Stroud will be available. He had a Jared Goff comp. That’s not Joe Burrow.

Miami got a FA QB in Fitzpatrick. Where were the FA QB players we could pick up? We couldn’t because of salary cap. And even if we did we didn’t have draft picks to trade for any like Wilson. Or Ryan. And both underperformed expectations.

Speaking of Dolphins - they have made the playoffs in 2016 and 2022 if I am not mistaken. I don’t know what qualifies as a rebuild but making it to the playoffs should be part of it. That is a five year gap. Almost like a 5 year rebuild…

The point I am making is OB, Easterby and Watson screwed this team so badly that yes it is taking longer than most teams to rebuild than it should.

And the QBs players available in draft the last 3 years weren’t what Cincinnati fell into with Burrow. So it’s a bad comparison.

Caserio is going to do what his coaches want. That’s how we got Stingley. Hopefully it will work out with Demeco. But you still have owners that do dumb stuff like give OB the GM title. Hire Easterby. Hire Culley and Lovie. Hopefully that ends with Hannah’s involvement.

Stroud skipping the Manning Academy after committing because he wasn't going to get paid is more of an egregious red flag than Bennett getting arrested for public intoxication. There is a disconnect and those who are in it for the money and not the love of the game, usually do not fare well for long in the arena.

Agree.

Stroud wanted a part of the money Manning’s were making. I am willing to bet that idea came from his agent.

I may be wrong but Stroud doesn’t seem like a strong leader.

His height doesn't bother me honestly. Qbs don't throw over the top of linemen as much as they throw through lanes. I remember when Simms was in a battle with I think Applewhite at UT. Simms at 6'5 got way more passes batted down at the line than the 6ft applewhite.
In my previous posts re. Young, height was not my concern.........it was his slight bone structure and build/weight and potential durability in the NFL (with the injury history that is being overlooked).

Stroud saying he didn’t want to go #1 at the time to Chicago because his buddy is there, he isn’t a leader. Folks try to spin it all they want, he said he didn’t want to go first overall. Even if that’s how he felt, you don’t admit that.

I’d talk with the Raiders and Falcons about a trade back. The media darlings of Young, Stroud, Richardson, and Levis will probably be gone before picks 7 and 8. Either team could have an interest in moving to the 2 spot so they would have their choice of everyone but Young. Cost for either team…..pick 7 or 8, 2023 RD2, and a 2024 RD1.

I’m getting the QB I covet instead of hoping he falls to my desired draft point.

RD1-7 or 8: QB- Hendon Hooker (Tennessee)
RD1-12: DE- Lucas Van Ness (Iowa)

I’d gain a RD2, giving the Texans the number 33 and 38 or 44. They’d still have picks 65 and 73 in RD3. That would give them 7 picks in the top 104. Gaining another RD1 in 2024 would be highly beneficial in finalizing the rebuild.

And that probably came from his agent too. Classic money grab. We have witnessed Mulugheta’s players work together in the Brady Quinn fiasco. A player say he isn’t going to a team to compete against another Mulugheta player. And first hand saw one of his players sign a contract, get a no trade clause, and demand a trade months later.

It’s one thing to deal with Mulugheta. But don’t empower him by selecting one of his players at such a critical position like QB.

Yeah, it's like you're dealing with some cartel. Keep that NBA **** in the NBA.

C.J. Stroud Doesn’t Want Bears to Draft Him, Says It’s Justin Fields’s Team

Ohio State quarterback CJ Stroud is one of the draft’s top quarterback prospects, and could be the first signal-caller off the board next month.
Much has been made about what the Bears will do with the top pick in the draft. While Chicago is certainly open to trading the pick, there is a chance that they keep the pick. Regardless of whether or not they trade back to later in the top 10, Stroud has made it clear that he does not want to go to Chicago and displace former Ohio State teammate Justin Fields.

“I mean, nah, I don’t want to go there,” Stroud said at the combine on Friday. “That’s his team. I can do my thing. I can go build my legacy. He texted me yesterday morning. Me and him are brothers for life.”

While Chicago’s plan for now is to stick with Fields, the Bears are still evaluating options at the position in the draft.

Fields enjoyed a breakout year in his second season in the league. He had mixed results through the air, where he threw for 2,242 yards and 17 touchdowns to 11 interceptions. However, Fields’s ability in the running game was on full display in his second year, as he rushed for 1,143 yards and eight touchdowns.

The Bears are certainly hoping that Fields will take the next step in the passing game in 2023, but his playmaking ability on display from last season is a positive sign that things may be starting to click for Chicago’s franchise quarterback.

Right, he never said 'I don't wanna go number 1'. He said 'I don't wanna go there' (Chicago).

And he then proceeded to give a perfectly understandable reason as to why.

Much ado about nothing. Some folks have an agenda or don’t like him, so they look for stuff that puts him in a bad light. I have no idea if he will be in the HOF or out of the league in 3 years but in neither extreme will it be because he didn’t want to step on the toes of his best buddy.

Yet even Bryce says otherwise as do everyone else.

I will literally throw up blood if the Texans take Levis at 2.

I've still got a gut feeling the Panthers have just been shooting the **** all of this time trying to get the Texans to bite.

My 2 pick mock draft:
#1 - Stroud - Carolina
#2 - Young - Houston

117 hours to go.
Agree 💯
The first tweet has Bryce Young at +2000 for Texans. Absolutely laughable.

I'm afraid that Young is anticipating a "perfect world" that is unlikely to exist.

Bryce Young says he will use “anticipation” to make up for lack of height
Posted by Mike Florio on April 22, 2023, 12:21 PM EDT

During a recent interview with former Alabama quarterback Bryce Young, the perfunctory height question needed to be asked. In asking it, a different approach was attempted.

We all know that Young is on the south side of six feet. That’s not going to change, barring a growth spurt. So Young was asked how he’ll navigate the realities of having large offensive lineman and large defensive linemen in front of him.

“I think it’s a lot about anticipation, knowing where your guys are going be, and then knowing where the defense [will be],” Young said.

He added that much of it also comes from diagnosing and understanding the coverages, and then “trying to find throwing lane and seeing in between and again, even when you can’t see, it’s knowing where people are going to be at based off of understanding the concept, understanding the defense you’re getting, and knowing what you have to account for and who you have to account for based off where you’re trying to throw.”

As he explained, it’s about processing information, “whether it’s a clean pocket or there’s a bunch of people getting pushed back into my face.”

Other short quarterbacks have pulled it off. And it is about understanding where people will be, and about looking for lanes through which to see.

Obviously, the Panthers have decided it won’t be an issue. Unless the betting markets have engaged in the worst amount of anticipation that they have in years.

Draft Notes: Hooker, Texans, Avila
April 22nd, 2023 at 9:34pm CST by Adam La Rose

For much of the pre-draft process, it has been widely assumed that four quarterbacks will be taken in the first round. The next highest-rated passer, Hendon Hooker, could increase that number to five.

The Tennessee product had a promising 2022 season cut short by an ACL tear, which will keep him sidelined for at least part of his rookie campaign. That, along with his age (25), has hurt his stock to the point that many see him as a second-round prospect. Hooker has met with a number of teams across the Day 1 order, however, and the Raiders are one squad which came away impressed with him.

ESPN’s Matt Miller confirms that Hooker is gathering steam to be picked in the first round. He cites multiple scouts who believe he can safely be penciled into the Day 1 order, with one prediction even connecting him to the Commanders at No. 16. Washington is committed to Sam Howell as their starter, and they have signed Jacoby Brissett as an experienced backup. While teams set to pick later in the round could therefore be better fits, it may not come as much a surprise if one of them elects to add Hooker compared to earlier in the offseason.

Here are some other notes from the same ESPN piece:
  • Both Miller and colleague Jordan Reid are in line with the prevailing thought in league circles that the Texans will not use the second overall pick on a quarterback. Recent reports have increasingly pointed to Houston preferring a defensive prospect to any quarterback other than Bryce Young, who is widely expected to go first overall. Miller adds that Alabama’s Will Anderson Jr. is the name “most often connected” to the second pick – something which goes against previous reports listing fellow edge rusher Tyree Wilson as the favorite for GM Nick Caserio and Co. In any case, the Texans (who also hold the 12th pick) will certainly be a team to watch in the early going on Thursday, as their QB situation may not be addressed on Day

It's still difficult for me to believe that the reason for Stroud not attending the "camp" was no compensation alone, if at all. If it did have anything to do with it, I'd have to think back to the fact that college athletes more and more are EXPECTING compensation for their mere "being" and "presence"............all beginning around 2014, when NCAA ruled that college athletes should be paid for their attendance at football summer camps, i.e. to pay student-athletes a figure consistent with the going rate for guest coaches.

It's funny to follow all the speculations by even the Vegas people.

Falcons the betting favorites to draft Bijan Robinson
Posted by Michael David Smith on April 23, 2023, 4:24 AM EDT

Bijan Robinson of Texas is universally recognized as the best running back in the 2023 NFL draft, but the running back position just isn’t as important in today’s NFL as it used to be, and some think running backs just don’t belong near the top of any draft. So where will Robinson land?

The betting odds suggest Robinson landing in Atlanta: The Falcons are the betting favorites to draft Robinson, at +200 odds at Draft Kings.

Running back isn’t necessarily a need for the Falcons, after rookie Tyler Allgeier ran for 1,035 yards for them last year and veteran Cordarrelle Patterson continued to be one of the league’s most versatile offensive playmakers. But there’s been plenty of talk that the Falcons have fallen in love with Robinson’s talent.

The next-most likely team to draft Robinson, the odds suggest, is the Texans at +500, followed by the Eagles at +750, the Commanders at +850 and the Cowboys and Bears both at +1000.

Understandable how? Because his friend plays there? I’m sure you know there are many players in the league who are friends and they still compete because it’s a business. By the way, saying you don’t want to go play in destination X no matter the reason is a red flag. That’s called entitlement. He hadn’t played a down in the NFL to be able to make such a request, especially publicly.

IMO the Desert is the ultimate insider, which is to say much of that betting is based on much more than speculation or guessing
and it's why I'm so torn between my adamant belief that the Texans will take only Young or Stroud, while the desert says no they aren't drafting a QB @ 2: somebody knows something that those of us who think QB @ 2 don't know. Period.

I have learned to take notice of their odds.

Sure about that, I'm not convinced ?
Here's the latest - now it's a QB who's not Strout or Young. Levis ! That would be a shocker !
Well this is definitely a more entertaining offseason for Texans fans than recent years.
NFL DRAFT - No. 2 OVERALL PICK ODDS
Will Levis (Kentucky, QB) -140
Tyree Wilson (Texas Tech, LB) +250
Will Anderson (Alabama, LB) +380
CJ Stroud (Ohio State, QB) +470
Anthony Richardson (Florida, QB) +2000
Bryce Young (Alabama, QB) +2200
Jalen Carter (Georgia, DL) +4000

I love how the Texans have so many options in this draft and especially at the top.
With #2 they can:-
Take the best QB available
Trade down the first pick
Trade up to #1 (yuck)
Take the best pass rusher
Take BPA

With #12 they can:-
Take BPA
Take the best remaining QB
Trade down
Trade up
Take the best pass rusher

With #33 they can:-
Trade back up into the 1st round (5th yr opt.)
Take BPA
Take their QB
Trade down

Surely they have the most unpredictable draft scenarios of all the teams.
This is what makes this draft for Texans the most exciting and intriguing I have seen.
NC has had his work cut out - now we get to see just how hard he has been working.
This draft is pivotal for Texans.
I just hope he nails it.

Don't quite know what you mean by "anticipating a perfect world", but Bryce is merely repeating what has been said of him in his profiles, that he plays with diagnosing and anticipation and is elite in this. His S2 score reflects this.

This past season Young showed how excellent he is playing off schedule when play is not perfect. His pocket presence under pressure is excellent while he also keeps his eyes downfield, still anticipating where his receivers should be.
Anticipation doesn't work if you're receivers aren't positioned perfectly............and/or don't attain the significant separation he would have seen in college. That window is very dependent on multiple factors............QB protection, QB response, receiver skills, defense coverage. Also very importantly, as every rookie has to admit, the speed of the game in the NFL gets raised several notches..............some very highly rated QBs adjust.............others never do. Only time will tell how Young responds to the transition, and if he is given that time before having to deal with significant injury.

https://bleacherreport.com/articles...-no-2-a-mild-surprise-in-nfl-latest-on-texans

Will Levis emerging as a possible favorite to go No. 2 to the Houston Texans in the 2023 NFL draft was met with "mild surprise" around the league, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

"But I did ask around on Houston and Levis and that potential marriage," Fowler said Sunday on SportsCenter. "I was told that his predraft meeting with the team did go very well, it was positive from all that I've heard. And then also, it was pointed out to me that Levis and GM Nick Caserio both very similar personalities, both considered 'serious.'"

There's a growing sense of uncertainty surrounding the Texans. For most of the predraft process, the general belief was that Houston would select Alabama's Bryce Young or Ohio State's C.J. Stroud depending on which of the two was available.

But The Athletic's Dane Brugler reported on April 17 that "there isn't a unanimous belief among the Houston coaches" about one quarterback being good enough for the No. 2 pick.

Another curveball came when Levis emerged as the betting favorite to go second overall at one major sportsbook.

Fowler reported that "Houston's been open to trading back," so the Texans might feel they can move down a few spots and still land Levis or wait for him to fall to No. 12.

That ^ would be my choices.

For our team, selecting the BPA each round would be acceptable to me. None would be an unnecessary luxury pick.

Success will be dependent on identifying the BPA. (capt. obvious) That's where the rubber meets the road.

We can have faith in Casserio and our scouts, or not.

Some will, some don't.

Yes, because someone he considers a brother is the starting QB there and he has no intentions of trying to supplant that.

And it wasn't a request, it was an answer to a question. He wasn't negotiating with anyone, he was asked and politely answered a question.

I don't recall him twirling his mustache while unveiling his diabolical plot. He was asked what he thought of going to the Bears who had the first pick at the time, like most elite-tier players are regularly asked each year around the draft, and he politely and candidly responded that he'd prefer not to go there out of respect for his close personal friend.

It's really pretty simple.

He had time in the pocket. A lot. Won’t have that in the NFL.
