2023 TEXANS DRAFT DISCUSSION

Another interesting new mock. Richardson could be amazing but only if someone like Jimmy G or another good vet is signed and he gets to sit and learn.

I see this as a possibility, but in reverse. Indy would take Richardson not Stroud, because of Shane Steichen and the success he had with Hurts in Philadelphia. Richardson is potential Hurts on steroids (figuratively, not literally).

I really hope it doesn't happen, because Steichen would be supremely suited into making Richardson a monster we'd have to face 2/year. Again, it's the compact and fluid throwing motion that has me believing AR will be just fine throwing the ball - perhaps deadly after more reps. I'd rather we get AR than the other way around, but I think the Texans will take the safer road and more WCO friendly option.

It's clear that the Pro-Young and Anti-Young camps around here will say anything to either defend or attack him. It's like a Trump conversation.

I think it’s the way people are nowadays. Very attached to their opinions and tend not to be objective or listen to differing opinions. It’s a very “you are either with me or against me” attitude in all things. Sports, politics, religion, etc.

I blame the internet and their algorithms.

Would you take Davis Mills at 2.33? Tanner McKee is pretty much another Davis Mills. Same school and all.

McKee is a Mills clone, he is not good, and he was terrible at the combine. Why on Earth we want McKee anywhere, much less 33 is beyond me. But no. Definetely not buying McKee when I already have him on the roster and he sucks canal water.

You realize that everyone at the combine went through extensive medical examines and the results will be given to all NFL teams? Right?
Do they get MRI's at the combine? They have so many players coming through there that they can't do anything more than a rudimentary check.

Basically my point. I'm not taking McKee at 2.33, and probably not at all.

I don't think exhaustive medicals like that are released. It will be the basic stuff, so things like labrum tears can go undetected... Still assuming Young is 100% fine until something concrete surfaces.

But surely they have the medical results from the original injury. Shouldn't an MRI been done at that time?

Who is the "they" you reference? Does the University of Alabama medical staff have an MRI if one was done? Yes. Are they authorized to provide that information to the NFL or any team? No.

"They" refers to the NFL and/or the teams at the Combine. You are correct about the authorization for release of previous medicals, but the players can authorize the release of that information, I would think. Any player who would not release his prior medicals should raise a red flag.

MRIs are taken. The medical examination can take as much as 8 hours of a player’s time. Hendon Hooker said his exam took 5 hours. He and Young played Uno.

Right. I was just saying that the NFL/Teams/Combine don't automatically get access to all of that. HIPPA and all that.

If I'm a QB prospect and have an alleged lingering issue with my throwing shoulder, I don't let anything get released. I wait as long as I can to heal as much as I can before going through any drills. IMO.

Hooker may be decent, but I think Jimmy will do better and he knows the system to a larger extent. Making it hard to hand off the team to another QB, as they wouldn't have the knowledge.
Well, the idea is to let Hooker sit until he's ready. I'd be ecstatic if this ended up happening. Let Hooker learn behind two vets and fully recover.
The grammar Nazi in me fify. :D

1. The Colts and Panthers moved up for C.J. Stroud (at No. 1) and Anthony Richardson (No. 4), respectively. The Bears were at the heart of both trades. Especially in light of everything you saw and heard at the combine, how’d you like those moves?
Baumgardner:
The Colts and Stroud felt like a perfect pair before the combine. Stroud could go through his share of first-year hiccups, but Indianapolis has a better roster than we’re used to seeing this high up in the draft. The Colts have the defense and general personnel to help a young player like this. For me, it seemed like a decision of whether Indianapolis would fall in love with Stroud, Bryce Young or neither and opt to sit and wait, knowing there’d be value at No. 4 anyway.

Stroud was terrific at the combine and in the College Football Playoff. His throwing motion is like a well-practiced golf swing, and he’s the most gifted pocket passer in this class. And, make no mistake, this is a good quarterback class.

Tice: I love it for the Bears, who need as many viable players and ways to find them as possible. A war chest of draft picks would help.

Stroud matches the size threshold that the Colts have for their players and would bring a polished game to a roster that isn’t as bad as one might think. Pairing Stroud (my personal QB1) with Shane Steichen, who has a background in Norv Turner offenses, would make sense. Stroud could push the ball to an Indianapolis receiving corps with size. That roster would just need a little talent injection along the offensive line, as well.

Based on conversations had before and during the combine, the Colts are looking for a long-term option at quarterback but not a project. While there’s no such thing as certainty when it comes to rookie quarterbacks, Stroud is as close as you’ll get in this draft class to threading that needle. His size, accuracy and consistency make him the kind of foundational piece needed to build this offense around.

I still some have questions about how Stroud will manage pressure at the next level, but I have a hard time seeing him being anything other than the efficiency machine he’s been since his first start for Ohio State. The 2017-18 version of Jared Goff is the trajectory I’m banking on, and Stroud’s ceiling will be determined by how comfortable he is using his legs.

3. Trades aside, what was the most surprising pick of Dane’s latest mock?

Another thing that’s not a surprise to me but might be to some: Dane noted Houston doesn’t have to (and might not) take a quarterback at No. 2. It seems like too many have assumed otherwise. The Texans need so many things, in addition to a quarterback, that if they want to ride with Davis Mills for a bit longer and focus on the elite options in next year’s quarterback class … I can understand that.

Tice: It was a non-pick for me, and that’s Johnston falling out of the first round. This wide receiver class is not a great one, as far as top-end talent — especially compared to recent classes and even more so when it comes to receivers with size. I wouldn’t be shocked if Johnston falls to Day 2, because he is not a perfect prospect, but he has an intriguing height/weight/speed combination that others at the top of this year’s class don’t.

I kept scrolling to see his name and ended up in the comments section.

How is he hurting his draft position?

His odds of being the number 1 overall pick have gone up from where they were before the combine.

If that's true, why are more mocks showing Stroud and Richardson going top 3 as well as a D player and then Young? It's a gamble on any of them but unless he shows really well at...whenever he throws. He already got a slight ding for not throwing at the combine. Not by everyone but some.

Why should I know or give a rip why anyone's mock draft shows anything? Just any one given idiots guess.. ok.

And it's not 'if' it is true because it verifiably is true - his odds actually became greater to be the number 1 overall pick from before to after the combine.

Cant wait to see the rash of new mock drafts if it happens. Texans will then be in the prime position to trade down.
Then take Peter Skoronski.
Then Brian Bresee with #12.
I'm hoping trade down no matter, Skoronski ok at 12 no to Bresee in top 50.

i was thinking whatxif texans get cj at #2 since young will be gone

and if tanner falls to us in the 2nd we take him has well

u think nick would grab two qbs
I heard this suggested on radio but it was quickly shut down by others. For me a QB in 6th or later would be ok. We need too many players to waste a round 2 after a QB round one. Hooker in round 2 is till my thought. His injury unlike others has been said not to be a long term deterrent by Doc IIRC. He has a strong arm with accuracy and he is mobile with good frame. This place him ahead of both JC and Bryce IMO as you cannot eat intangibles that might not be on table in NFL.

"His time in the 40-yard dash (4.86 seconds) was fast for a player running at 298 pounds, and in his on-field work, he showed just how smooth, polished and incredibly quick he is. Bresee only made very minor, slightly out-of-control errors in the drills, but they're inconsequential."

You're joking right?

First, why should Young explain anything to the public? Public disclosure does not effect his draft position one iota. His medical issues were fully disclosed at the Combine.

It is conjecture, but almost certainly his long postponement of not throwing has to do with ongoing physical therapy to his shoulder and the advice of his physician and therapist, his goal being to fully recover going forward. His future prognosis will be fully understood by any team rolling the dice on drafting him.

The public should have no expectation of being informed at this point.
Then why throw at all?

Jimmy G to the Texans is starting to look like a real probability. 610 has reported that the team spoke with his team. As well as another station saying that the lively of Jimmy G going to Houston is heating up. Jimmy has ties to Nick Caserio (NE briefly), Meco and the new staff. He has no issues with turning the team over to another player as he did twice in San Francisco. I see 3 ways that it would end if it happens.

I don't get going after a QB that Kid Shanny is gnawing his own arm off trying to get rid of.

Carolina Panthers

The Panthers were never willing to go as high on Derek Carr as the Saints, which is part of the reason there was buzz at the combine that Frank Reich and GM Scott Fitterer were interested in trading up for a quarterback. The Panthers are considering all options, but they know they would have to switch places with Arizona at 3 to ensure they get one of the top three QBs on their board. While the Panthers are impressed with Anthony Richardson’s raw talent, my sense is they view him as too big of a gamble to trade up for. Then — assuming they don’t pursue another free agent such as Jimmy Garoppolo — it becomes a matter of which QB they like best among Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud and Will Levis. — Joe Person

Houston Texans

It’s no secret that the Texans need a quarterback and plan to use their first-round pick on one of the top passers in the draft. But general manager Nick Caserio said it’s possible that the Texans could come away from the draft with two quarterback selections. Third-year pro Davis Mills is currently the only quarterback on the roster, so Caserio said that he plans to add multiple quarterbacks this spring. Given the Texans’ abundant resources entering the draft (11 picks including two in the top 12), Houston very well could pull off a trade to move up to No. 1 overall so they can select the top quarterback on their wish list rather than waiting to see what Chicago does at the top spot. (Many around the league expect the Bears to trade down so another quarterback-needy team can leap-frog the Texans.) — Mike Jones

Indianapolis Colts

General manager Chris Ballard knows the rest of the NFL firmly believes he’s going to trade up for a quarterback this spring and — ideally — steer the Colts out of the quarterbacking abyss they’ve been stuck in since Andrew Luck retired. Last week, Ballard tried to downplay that desperation, purposefully pushing back on the narrative his team has to trade up to land its future face of the franchise. “I know everybody in America has just automatically stamped that you gotta move up to (No.) 1 to get it right,” Ballard said. “I don’t know if I agree with that. I don’t.” Does this mean the Colts won’t move up? Absolutely not. That’s still very much on the table. But Ballard stressed that he won’t unless he feels the player he’s getting is a slam-dunk prospect. There’s still a lot of evaluation to be done before that decision gets made. But something both Ballard and new coach Shane Steichen did allow: Size won’t scare them away. That’s an interesting development on the Bryce Young front. — Zak Keefer

Then why throw at all?
Who? Young? I've commented in a previous post that I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't. If you are asking why should any qb throw at a combine, it would be to showcase arm talent and draft prospects. If my suggestion that Young may not be throwing because of medical advice is actually accurate, if he's cleared to throw, then he will because it's expected.

Nope watched him play after losing his side kicks to NFL. Like Carter, unimpressive but unlike Carter not injured. As with Richardson he rides the combine wave.

would that be the Houston hotel that was discussed in the Deshaun Watson forum? DW keeps taking and taking. Even after OBrien and Easterby gone they remain..
Shhhh! The NFL might take another draft pick. On a serious note. When reports came out that the Texans/Easterby setup the arrangement at the hotel. I immediately wondered if that wasn't a salary cap violation.

Is it a salary cap violation because they didn't get everyone a membership? Why can't the Texans have an alternate workout facility? They need a good lawyer. What's Buzbee doing now?

When I read the tweet this is exactly what I thought. It has to be due to the Hotel. It makes so much sense. Unless Texans players say otherwise.

Also, DeMeco and Slowik knows the reason(s) why Shanny is gnawing his own arm off to get rid of him.
Maybe there was a personality conflict between Shanny and Jimmy G? I guess DeMeco is cool with Jimmy?

I wonder if Jimmy G could have been activated for the last playoff game but Jimmy G didn’t want to be because he wanted to be cautious with his injury. Or he was pissed at Shanny for some reason and didn’t want to be.

Is Young going dark, on social media? Is it strange he hasn't posted any comments on his where abouts or updates on what he has been doing?

Ironically, most if not all of my simulated mocks ended with the 5th round because I felt like I could still get a good player in the 5th round. It's all a conspiracy against me. First the IRS, now the NFL.
