So McNair was involved to the level of 'get the damn QB fixed.' RS was trying to find an OB guy. OB didn't make that worked. So RS went, 'screw it we're taken the best QB we can afford in the draft.'
& Buttchin still wanted to start Savage.

Just came by for my daily dose of why our (winning record) head coach sucks and should be fired.
He probably didn't want to come back. None of us know what was said behind those closed doors.
On this we can agree.
To be honest I think it was mostly a Smith decision but I'm not excusing BoB, I think it was a Smith decision because Hoyer, Mallet and Savage were all BoB decisions. In my head, and totally in my head, I can see McNair watching the meltdown that was Hoyer in the playoffs and telling Smith to un-F this mess and get a damn QB no matter what. Frankly if I had been in Smith's position I don't know that I would have consulted BoB either.
I just wish the former GM had lived with the philosphy of drafting a QB every 3-4 yrs in rds 1-3 so ...
Totally agree with this post.
I just wish the former GM had lived with the philosphy of drafting a QB every 3-4 yrs in rds 1-3 so that this franchise never again has to suffer thru the Fitzmajic/Hoyer/Mallett yrs.
This is where the former GM failed. I expect Gaine to pick a QB high in the 2020 draft, given Watson's injury history.

New #Texans TE @DarrenFells pursued a professional basketball career in Argentina, Mexico, Belgium, Finland and France from 2008-12 before signing with the #Seahawks in 2013.
I still can't get past @TheKDog 's assessment that this team is broke.
Which is why they don't have that much of an effect on the bottom line stat of PPG whether you include them or not & why your whole point of excluding them b/c you saw the Texans were 20th in this particular cherry picked stat is well, silly.
Also, stop acting like there's this huge gap from those teams that are on the backend of the top 10 & where the texans are. Outside of KC, NO, LAR & NE, There are a boatload of teams that are within 1/2 a TD of being in the top 10 according to your metric & more than a few that are less than a FG from being in the top 10 by PPG.
You pump up our defense b/c they finished top 10 in your handpicked metric but couldn't stop anyone when it mattered. Statistically though, KC's defense was better even though they were maligned by, well everyone. The hype around the Texan's defense is a myth perpetrated by ill-informed fans like you & the fan fare names like JJ Watt & JD Clowney bring.
Yep if we fail we quit trying.
#HoustonTexansorg,
Fix the oline and you will all but erase that percieved gap. There is a huge gap between the Texans offense and the offense of KC, NO, LAR and NE. It is absolutely massive. O'Brien's offense is like 70's era.

I understand your frustration, but there is still the draft and moves that can be made. They have to make some significant progress on the line this year, I definitely agree with you there.O'Brien doesn't know how to fix the OLine. Another offseason of terrible moves on OL. There were value FAs to be had and he didn't go after any of them.
They could have trade for Nsehke or Daryl Williams who signed for cheap.
Parnell is still out there, why don't they give him a look?
Name a team that does this? Don't say Patriots as they have only done so as Brady has hit will he/won't he age.
No one "quit trying." They attempted to keep Matthieu. But they didn't want to overpay, nothing wrong with that because if you overpay you constrain yourself capwise. Who is the last guy Belichick overpaid because some guy on the internet wanted him to? Do you want another overpaid bust like Osweiler?
They signed Roby and Gipson to help on the biggest need on the defense. They signed Blackson to a nice value deal.
The offense is a mess though, thanks to O'Brien. They didn't go after ANY value OTs. They tried to compete for Saffold, but why? He's a guard. It seems at this point they are waiting for the draft to fix OT but a rookie could take years for one to develop.
Green Bay
Washington used to do this under Beathard.

Just what Texans don't need.
They already pushed our oline around last season, now this.
Not good.
Nope, 2002 to now they have drafted Rodgers (2005) and Brohm (2008) in the top 3 rounds.
Beathard 1978-1989, seriously this is a current example? You're proving my point. Anyway, Jay Schroeder (1984) was their only top 3 rds QB pick during his tenure.
Classic SteelB. Prove him wrong, he changes his argument. SMHI went exactly by your statement, draft a QB every 3-4 years in the top 3 rounds. Your examples did not. Nobody burns that much draft capital on backups.
Didn't Green Bay have Favre when they drafted Rodgers?
Didn't Washinton have Theismann then drafted Schroeder/Humphries/Sign Williams in FA?
BB drafted Jimmy G
I really dont care what other teams are doing I'm telling you what they should be doing, so that when Watson gets hurt they have the QB position covered by more than Weeden/Webb. BTW, I like the McCarron signing alot. The best backup QB since Rosencopter. IMHO
No team in the league has starting caliber players as backups for anything longer than a season or two. If they were starting caliber they would be somewhere else starting.
Rookie contracts? You draft eventual (hopefully starters) a few years before need, right?
Top 3 rds are generally expected to start within 0-2. So I wouldn't call that a few.
There is a huge gap between the Texans offense and the offense of KC, NO, LAR and NE. It is absolutely massive. O'Brien's offense is like 70's era.
Who gets to decide what's an overpay.
You dont really overpay if spending big $$$$ is protecting your franchise QB.
They certainly haven't overpaid to the tune of having rhe 2nd most cap space in the league. Call that what you will.
I guess those other 6 teams in the top 10's offense's were from the 70's era too then. Pay attention. I said OUTSIDE OF those 4 teams...meaning the elite of the elite yes, there is a huge gap...the other 5-6 in the top 10..not so much.
Looking at remaining FAs
Texans should try to sign. no order
CB Claiborne
G T.J Lang
DT Wilkerson
RT Penn
WR Hogan
CB Melvin
G Spain
DT Philon
Rookie contracts? You draft eventual (hopefully starters) a few years before need, right?
Claiborne as depth has size and has played decent when healthy at NYJ.Clairborne = trash
TJ Lang = done
Wilkerson = team cancer / done
Penn = coming off injury / done
Hogan = not much better than what we have as our 3-4 guy now
Melvin = Who?
Spain = not much better than what we have now / Tenn paid Saffold big money to rid themselves of this guy
Philon = Who?
Doesn't matter which position on that line you upgrade.
Just one quality addition can have a huge impact on it.
For instance, you install a beast roadgrader at Guard and suddenly your run game comes to life which then opens the passing game more.
The Texans were fools for hanging on to the Clown that way and should have made trading him for a #1 (Anybody's #1 this year or next). Instantly could have replaced him for less money with Justin Houston who will be playing this game at least as long as Clowney's knees are working. Now the Colts are going going to have this guy chasing Watson while the Texans spend $15 million on what could very easily be one of the last good years Clowney will see in his career.
I don't have a problem with much of the inactivity in free agency but I think this was a big mistake.
Claiborne as depth has size and has played decent when healthy at NYJ.
Wilkerson with Watt & Clowney would be a nightmare for offenses.
Penn is better then all we have right now.
Melvin at 6ft 2in is a big corner who had a down year.
Spain is good run blocker.
Philon is a rotation player for the rams. A big run stuffer. But ARZ is signing him.
Hogan is a playmaker and would be cheap. WR depth has been a big issue.
Any OL players brought in on prove it deals need to happen. Just get guys in and run thru training camp keep those that perform cut those who dont. Status quo is not the way to go.
Bring in 10 new OL on minimum deals I dont care. Find players that help this team.
I actually think they've been trying to do just that but no one is offering a #1.
I past desperate with last years OLine. This team will not win a superbowl with this oline. Hell could not win a playoff game with it at home. I would like to see my favorite team win. I am not sure what it is that you that you would like to see, maybe a rinse repeat scenario.I guess your in the “desperate times call for desperate measures” mode I suppose.
Just keep in mind, desperation led to the Brock Osweiler and Ed Reed signings.
I am still mystified as to why Mancz was not re-installed back at his Center spot he did so well at his rookie year. He may have continued to develop into a solid C.IMHO, the weak spot I. The run game has a name that starts with N & ends with ick Martin. We absolutely have to do something at Center.
PFF:
"Matt Kalil’s $55 million deal is shaping up to be an all-time bad signing. He earned a 63.1 overall grade in 2017 before missing all of 2018 with yet another injury. It will cost them more to cut the soon to be 30-year old tackle than to roster him in 2019, but either way, you likely don’t want him starting."
PFF Most Improved OLs
"The move to cut Matt Kalil itself might have been enough for Carolina to make this list, but when you pair it with signing center Matt Paradis and re-upping right tackle Daryl Williams, Cam Newton can rest easy. Paradis was a top-three-graded center before he went on IR last year and has been consistently one of the best centers in the NFL ever since the Broncos won the Super Bowl. To get him for under $10 million a year was a steal, and he’ll be a significant upgrade from the now retired Ryan Kalil. Williams’ injury woes look a bit more serious, but he was a top-five-graded right tackle his last full season of 2017."
Panthers released OT Matt Kalil.
It's a post-June 1 designation, which creates $7.25 million in cap space. It was a necessary, expected move after Kalil missed 2018 with an unexplained knee issue. The injury washout came on the heels of a truly dreadful 2017 where Kalil's play regressed even further, and he was one of the worst tackles in the league. Kalil's 2017 signing was an abject disaster for ex-GM Dave Gettleman. The Panthers will be moving forward with Taylor Moton and Daryl Williams at tackle. Four months shy of his 30th birthday, Kalil is in danger of washing out of the league
