5-3 TEXANS

Texans move up 4 spots after beating the Lions.

Even without pro football's premier defensive player -- and with the most maligned quarterback in football (when Jay Cutler isn't playing) -- the Texans are inconveniencing the haters with a 5-3 record. With that, much love and respect to Andre Johnson -- to this point, the greatest Houston Texan of them all -- who was a force for a long time in the NFL. During the lockout in 2011, I wrote a series called "Player 2K" where I debated the top players at each position since Y2K with a guest analyst. Johnson was my wideout. Let me tell you: The man seriously deserves consideration for the Hall of Fame, WR logjam be damned.

5-3 TEXANS

No change in the ranking after the bye.

The Brock bashing has abated a bit. Amazing what winning will do, eh? The 5-3 Texans are coming off their bye carrying a lead in their division and plenty of question marks. Of course, those Qs start at QB. Despite logging the recent victory over the Lions, Osweiler has been far from brilliant (see: 186 yards passing on 29 attempts -- ugh). Then there is the disappearance of Will Fuller, who began the season with consecutive 100-yard receiving performances ... but has posted a grand total of 161 yards since. Or, put another way, he's no longer in the running for OROY. Spoiler alert.

6-3 TEXANS

The Texans move up 1 spot after defeating the Jaguars.

The Texans held on in Jacksonville, staying ahead of the Titans (5-5) in the AFC South while maintaining a perfect division record (3-0). Brock Osweiler's stat line once again invoked groans: 14 for 27, 99 yards and two touchdowns. Getting two scoring tosses is always nice, but 99 yards on that many attempts? Horrific. The defense did its part, shutting down the Jacksonville run game and making the Jags' offense one-dimensional (otherwise known as Blake Bortles garbage time -- he's darn-near branded it). Will Houston's defense and Lamar Miller be enough to take the division? The Texans visit the Titans on New Year's.

6-4 TEXANS

Down 2 spots after a very questionably officiated game.

Mmmmm, mmmmm, mmmmm. Wow. Tough to swallow that deal Monday night. The sideline call in the first quarter appeared to cost the Texans a touchdown. Both spots on the penultimate possession in the fourth quarter were questionable, to say the least. And tough to disagree with Jon Gruden's assessment in postgame: Bill O'Brien probably should have gone for it on fourth-and-4 with only one timeout left and 3:13 remaining. As bitter as the defeat might be, the Titans also lost and the Colts could be without Andrew Luck this week. Houston is still in first.

6-5 TEXANS

Dropped 6 spots after getting beat at home. 2 losses in a row now.

At this point, no one is sure whether to take the Texans seriously or not. Houston is, without question, the weakest division leader in the NFL. In fairness, this is the first time this season that theTexans have dropped consecutive games. The Week 11 loss to the Raiders was certainly questionable, from an officiating standpoint. Still, the running game is uneven ( Lamar Miller has averaged 3.8 yards per carry or less six times this season), and it is increasingly clear the huge investment in Brock Osweiler was just a huge investment. Not a fruitful one.

6-6 TEXANS

Texans drop 1 spot after losing to Green Bay.

The Texans dropped their third straight in Green Bay on Sunday. The real news here is that Houston is now tied atop the AFC South division, which has not been the case all season. Worth noting is that the Texans currently own the head-to-head advantage over both the Titans andColts. They will travel to Indy next week. The Nashville trip to face the Titans comes on Jan. 1. Anyway, it was neato seeing Texans players throw snowballs during pregame at Lambeau. It would be cooler than snow to see them win another game.

After beating the Colts, the Texans move up 6 spots in the ranking.

The Texans defied the odds on Sunday in Indy -- and in the process, defied nearly every analyst I know. Given the state of Brock Osweiler's play, and the Texans' history versus the Colts, it was sooooo easy to take Indy in Week 14. What Bill O'Brien's club proved, for the 500th time (at least) in NFL history, is that running the football and playing solid team defense will never go out of style. The Broncos won the Super Bowl last year with similar schematics. Houston might have won the AFC South behind Lamar Miller's 107 rushing yards and the defense's three takeaways.

That's probably the nicest thing they've written about the Texans all season! Lol!
