2014 Texans Talk Mock Draft SELECTION

22(122) Philadelphia Eagles (beerlover) ON THE CLOCK: 9:15am - 1:15pm

23(123) Cincinnati Bengals (NCTexan)
24(124) Kansas City Chiefs (JCTexan)
25(125) San Diego Chargers (Texan4Ever)
26(126) New Orleans Saints (Coon)

Eagles top need is DB -

Antone Exum, CB/Safety, VA Tech, 6-0 213, ACC

Kelly was only Head Coach in attendance for Virginia Tech Pro-Day. The more tape I watched then evaluated his physical rehab condition @ the combine convinced me he is all the way back from his acl he tore over a year ago in a pick-up basketball game which forced him to all but miss his entire senior season. He tested out across the board higher than Ha Ha Clinton Dix, same size, see him playing safety in the NFL not CB, can play strong or free. Actually played FS first two seasons, led team in tackles, then switched to CB when star corner Jayron Hosley injured. One year he played CB he led team with 5 INT's. Probably his basketball background but plays above the rim & flashes ability to climb the ladder, recovery speed, difficult to over throw or run by him. See his strength as a deep safety, with size/strength & corner skills.

23(123) Cincinnati Bengals (NCTexan) ON THE CLOCK: 9:30am - 1:30pm

24(124) Kansas City Chiefs (JCTexan)
25(125) San Diego Chargers (Texan4Ever)
26(126) New Orleans Saints (coon)
27(127) Cleveland Browns (Dutchrudder)
28(128) Carolina Panthers (Bah007)

Give me a bit to get to class and settle in and I'll post it. Should be within the next hour. Especially now that my #1 (Murray) was taken..,

Bengals select George Uko, DT, USC.

I like this kid. I think he needs some time to develop, which he will behind Peko and Atkins. But Peko is in a contract year and Atkins is coming off and ACL tear, so having some depth here is good. This seems like about the right spot for him to go.

With the 124th pick the Kansas City Chiefs select...

Justin Ellis - DT - Louisiana Tech - C-USA

Sitting at a squatty 6'1", 350 lbs, Ellis looks every single pound of that on tape. He looks like Vince Wilfork against La Tech's lesser competition: constant push in the passing game and absolute domination between the tackles. He looked outstanding at the East/West game, as well. Ellis has definite starter potential, and if the Chiefs were serious about either giving Poe a blow, or moving him to DE, Ellis is definitely worth a look if he lasts to this pick..

I almost took him over Uko, but I wanted Uko cause I think he can kick outside if the Bengals need him there or if people get injured.

Good pick!

Looks like there's been a bit of a run on D-linemen.

Btw Mussop, I like the EJ Gaines pick a lot. I saw quite a bit of him during the A&M vs. Mizzou game, liked what I saw.

Murray was a fantastic pick for Arizona, Kiwi.

That's his best case scenario right there, learning under Arians and Tom Moore.

Texan4Ever has roughly 45 minutes left on his clock so let's start tossing around ideas just in case he doesn't make the deadline.

Chargers Draft:
1 - Xavier Su'a-Filo - OG, UCLA
2 - Jeremiah Attaochu - OLB, Georgia Tech
3 - Pierre Desir - CB, Lindenwood

I see their top needs at this point as another CB, a backup NT, O-Line depth, and a #2 WR.

I really like this pick. Ironically, I see Ellis much like I did Poe when he came out. His skill set is better suited as a penetrator, but he has the bulk and strength to play the nose. His development won't be as quick as Poe's, but he has serious potential.

Just using an old version of the CBS big board:
Will Sutton, DT, Arizona State
Terrance Mitchell, CB, Oregon
Jared Abbrederis, WR, Wisconsin

Best player available, but the reason I have passed on Sutton so far with the Chiefs & Falcons is because he isn't a 3-4 DT/NT. He is small and every scouting report I've read calls him "undersized". Maybe he can be a 3-4 DE, though? Otherwise, he's not a fit with the Chargers here.

Sutton appears to be almost exclusively a 3 tech DT to me. I don't see him as a fit in a 34.

Mitchell is the top CB on my board. I think I would go with him or the top OL.

Proxy pick for the Chargers after going over their deadline.

San Diego Chargers select...

Charles Leno Jr. - OT - Boise State - MWC

Chargers need depth at OT and Leno is an ideal swing tackle prospect. I thought about CB, but it's really deep and can be addressed again later.

Depending on the board, OL could be...

Anthony Steen, OG, Alabama
Bryan Stork, C, Florida State
Tyler Larsen, C, Utah State
Charles Leno, OT, Boise State
Michael Schofield, OT, Michigan
Jon Halapio, OG, Florida

I tend to project small DT to DE in a 3-4. Again that might be best suited for a 1 gap 3-4 though.

Yea that's more of a one-gap transition. Most smaller DT's don't have the length or power to anchor against double teams like they are required to in a two-gap. They are quicker and more explosive guys who are more adept at shooting gaps, which makes them good fits as gap penetrators in a one-gap system.

When I set up my board, I place all of my players in tiers 1-10. I then rank them individually within those tiers, but my rule of thumb is to never reach to a lower tier if a player from a higher tier is available. It helps me address need without reaching to far for a position instead of a player. I have 3 guys on my board still that are tier 4 players ( this means I think they can be starters). With that said I will double up on pass rushers.

With the 126th pick the New Orleans Saints Select
Demarcus Lawrence- DE/OLB- Boise State

Great pick. He was easily my top guy remaining. That's the 2nd time the Saints have taken the top guy on San Francisco's board (the other being Kyle Fuller in the 1st).

Rick, is that you?

Good sound strategy. Nice pick!

The San Francisco 49ers select...

Trey Millard - FB/TE - Oklahoma - Big 12

rn_a_treymillard2_ms_300.jpg

The 49ers just signed starting FB Bruce Miller to an extension, but I see Millard as more of an H-Back anyway. I envision him getting somewhat of a redshirt year as a rookie and then getting snaps in the Delanie Walker role as a move TE. Pure luxury pick, but the 49ers can afford that luxury.

The New England Patriots select...

Crockett Gillmore - TE - Colorado State - MWC

Crockett-Gillmore.jpg

I've been targeting a TE for the Pats in what feels like every round, but they keep going off the board before I can get on the clock. Not this time. The general consensus seems to be that the Pats need to add another Hernandez-type move TE. I disagree. They need an insurance policy for starter Rob Gronkowski, who has battled injuries continuously the past few years. When he gets hurt, the Pats offense falls apart because they have nobody to replace him. Now they do.

Gillmore is not the same matchup night mare that Gronk is, but he is a solid all-around player who can catch, run, and block. He is also someone that I think has the ability to play early and can come in and contribute immediately.

31(131) Denver Broncos (Blake) ON THE CLOCK: 4:45pm - 8:45 pm

Denver Broncos select:

Rashaad Reynolds, CB, Oregon State

If you saw the Oregon State v. Hawaii bowl game, you know who this guy is.

Sorry... yes he sent it last night. We should do a group pick for him if we want to keep moving tonight. I was just throwing out Smith because I thought the Lions could use a backup QB. I'm open to whatever.
