2009 Texans Talk Member Mock Draft

Sorry, folks I'm in Washington State at Ft Lewis going through Combat Skills Training, but...

With their first pick (#23) the New England Patriots select James Laurinaitis, LB, Ohio State

With the 24th pick, the Atlanta Falcons select BRIAN CUSHING, OLB, USC.

Explanation: I really had my eyes set on Brandon Pettigrew with this selection, but for some strange reason the Jets selected a TE in the 1st for the second year in a row. Go figure. Pettigrew would have solidified the offensive side of the ball for the Falcons for a decade and give QB Matt Ryan prolific weapons all over the field. I also thought about selecting Peria Jerry at this pick seeing that Grady Jackson isn't getting any younger. But Cushing makes the most sense. The Falcons are not bringing back UFA LB Michael Boley. Boley played out of position at the Sam LB position last year and his production fell off dramactically. Cushing gives the Falcons a perfect fit for that position, and gives the Falcons a strong core of LBs with Curtis Lofton and the underrated Keith Brooking. Look for the Falcons to go after a DT in the 2nd.

Good pick! I could really see him as a fit there.

Thanks! I like JL for several teams, but he seems to be the versatile kind of LB that the Patriots love. With Mayo last year and Lauriniatis this year, the Pats will have gone a long way to refreshing their LBing corps.

With Laurinaitis, I see a real blue collar hard working team player. I think he should do well in a 3-4 system like New England (and just seems like a Bellichek kinda guy). Good time to select him, especially for a playoff calibre team like NE. Should be a late first rounder or maybe an early 2nd rounder at worst, imo. Nice selection.

Wow, there were some awful picks there. Well, not awful I guess. Just some I really disagree with.

Nope. You were right the first time. Some of those are just plain awful.

You two want to share with us what picks you disagree on? Not that I disagree that there are some awful picks in that mock. I disagree with the Wells pick & the Freeman pick to name a couple. How about you guys?

The obvious. Houston Texans select Beenie Wells.

Those 2, and Detroit picking Delmas at 20. Raji to the Jags is interesting, but not necessarily bad. And I am not high on Oher.

Just prior to the Miami Dolphins pick we have learned of a trade between the Baltimore Ravens and the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Bengals will lose:
#38 : 520 points
#70 : 240 points
Total : 760 points

The Ravens will lose:
#26 : 700 points
#122 : 50 points
Total: 750 points

After Hou-Tex picks imatexan will be on the clock.

:twiddles thumbs:

I should've gotten a team with a higher pick....this is mega-boring hahah....I can only imagine the paper-flying, phone-screaming, utter sense of chaos in the half hour surrounding a teams' pick.

With the 25th pick of the 2009 NFL draft, the Miami Doplhins select: Alex Mack , C out of Cal.

OK, there was a serious run of LB's over the weekend. I was really hoping Laurinaitis would keep falling. :gun:

My plan would be to move the smaller and often over-powered Satele to G. Mack has the size and power to take on the larger NT's.

Other players that were considered were: Alphonso Smith (CB), Larry English (DE/OLB) and Darrius Heyward-Bey (WR)

My apologies for the hold up.

My goodness, I would love to be a fly on that wall just seeing what all goes down. I'm sure there's a healthy dose of some curse words flying around as well.

Oooh, surprise pick by the Dolphins!

Fly on the wall yes...

Particpant? Man, I don't know...it would be a crazy opportunity/experience but one that I would be hesitant to go through with...

Great pick by the Dolphins. Mack, IMO, is the most polished and experienced O-Lineman in the draft this year.

Yeah, I was really torn between Mack and Alphonso Smith. After doing a lot of research on the Phins and Parcells, I chose Mack.

Maybe Kastoff can weigh in on the pick, but Satele was over-powered at C from what I've gathered.

Good pick. Sounds like a Parcells guy. Question. Which LB's were you looking for with this pick?

TexansSeminole is on the clock.
Im sure TimeKiller knows he is after TS.
Then jgl35.

Due to trade between imatexan and TexansSeminole:

With the 26th pick of the 2009 NFL draft The Cincinnati Bengals select:

I was really hoping Laurinaitis would keep falling. Honestly, I was surprised he fell far enough to get me excited at #25. I don't think the Phins have filled the gap at the ILB position since Zach left.

I did consider English as the OLB opposite Porter, but after doing some research I found C was a position of need too. Mack was one of the BPA.

Cincinnati must of spent some day in Oxford, MS this season! They got Michael Oher and Peria Jerry. That would be most unfortunate if this were to really happen as I like Oher and Jerry and wouldn't want them to end up in the Cincy. :bat: LOL

sour grapes

imatexan just owned this mock draft :scarygirl:

With the, uh, #27 pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, the Indianapolis Colts select:

Duke Robinson, OG, Oklahoma

After being denied a trade up to get B.J. Raji with him going unexpectedly early and then watching as the Bengals leapfrogged me to steal Jerry away my shot at a DT looks busted for round 1. Next I look to upgrade the Oline in any fashion save C, Duke Robinson may be a slight reach here but fills the need nicely.

The Titans patiently await their pick. Plenty of talented players are available at need positions and will be value picks for the Titans as their pick comes around.

Uh oh... I know who you're going to pick. Well that's what I thought last year and they went running back, so nevermind.

With the 29th pick in the draft, the New York Giants select:

08-09-27-FB-1209.jpg

Chris "Beanie" Wells, RB, Ohio State

This was actually a tough choice. I hadn't planned on going after a RB until the later rounds. But with Wells falling to me and Brandon Jacobs and Derrick Ward becoming free agents, I have to get a RB to pair with Ahmad Bradshaw.

The Titans have needs at C, LB, DT, DE, CB, WR and QB. Certainly some of these potential needs could be solved via FA (from within and externally), notably re-signing Haynesworth. Bulluck's contract is up in 2009, contracts for Vanden Bosch and an aging Kearse are up in 2009, they have some coverage softness in Finnegan and an aging Harper. WR has always been an issue, but that can be solved later in the draft or FA, but I would rather shore up the QB position first before I start spending 1st round picks on the position. Finally, Mawae's contract is up next year and should retire.

I was intrigued by Harvin's availability, but the Titans are a team that excel in trench warfare and that begins with the running game. They must find a replacement for All-Pro Kevin Mawae, whose contract is up after next year. The pick here is Max Unger, as he can play all five positions, but excels in the interior. He could easily get reps all over the line in the first year and step into the starting C position in 2010.

Wolverine Fan and D-Rek are going to finish off round 1. Then we have round 2 kicking off with Ole Miss Texan, YoungTexanFan and Jwarren.

Sorry this is taking so long guys, I'm trying to work a double trade at the moment, but one of the members is not responding and has not been active in this mock.

It's very frustrating, but don't worry I will make my pick or announce a trade before the 24 hour deadline.
