2009 NFL Draft Thread

I'm not fussed that we haven't taken a back. You can get big grinders later or undrafted, its the big play guys you have to draft early.

I'm interested to hear Smith and Kubiak give their rationale for the recent picks though.

agreed:
see Darius Walker

Well said, I'm convinced. With all of these guys flying around, mini camp and training camp should be pretty interesting. Seems like we're selecting smart, academic all american types to boot.

Well its been said we want to model ourselves after NE. Good job in this draft if so.

Still lots of RB's left

Cedric Peerman RB VIRGINIA
Javon Ringer RB MICH ST
Rashad Jennings RB LIBERTY
James Davis RB CLEMSON
Jeremiah Johnson RB OREGON
Kory Sheets RB PURDUE
Arian Foster RB TENNESSEE
Devin Moore RB WYOMING
P.J. Hill RB WISCONSIN
Marlon Lucky RB NEBRASKA

What about someone like Chris Ogbonnaya as an undrafted FA or even a 7th round pick? He's got good size and physical ability. Not a lot of wear on the tires so he should have a lot to give.
I'm kind of liking the thought of Casey as a FB/short yardage back. I'd go Javon Ringer if we don't need a big back. Jennings, Davis, Johnson... shoot Kubiak knows what he's doing!!

I like Ogbonnaya. But I'd take one of the other RB's in the draft. If Oby goes undrafted which is likely, I'd sign him to an undrafted deal. He went to high school at Strake here in town and then obviously to TExas. I'd gamble that he'd sign with the hometown team and still be with all his family and friends.

Well big Herman Johnson just got picked by Arizona. Say what you want about him but getting him for a 5th round pick is good value IMO. I bet hes starting within the next 3 years.

I've said since Day 1 that Gartrell should be the RB and I think they will go that way of he is still around.

Dude, Gartrell Johnson was gone a looooong time ago.

Chargers picked him up in Round 4 with the 34th pick of that round.

Watching his vids back in the off-season, I wasn't impressed with him anyways. We could have had him at the 12th pick in the 4th and we chose a DB instead. Then we went TE the next two picks. There are just no RBs that Smithiak is crushing on right now.

I just got back from running some errands and saw we passed on Rashad Johnson to draft a Center...ok, I can understand that...but then we draft 2 tight ends in a row? How is this being justified?

Because they want to improve the overall athleticism on the team while also improving their blocking in the red zone. Hill and Casey provide answers to both problems.

Casey is more than just a TE. He will be our longsnapper and H back and TE in our 2 TE sets and maybe more.

Ok, I guess I can understand that. I still think we'd been better off using one of those on a DB.

That being said, I really like Casey, and I still think there's some quality back up RBs available.

We keep complaining about not getting a RB but they are just not going off the board. The same guys have been on the board for a long time now.

Casey is more than just a TE. He will be our longsnapper and H back and TE in our 2 TE sets and maybe more.

He is easily a slot guy who can mix it up on those short crossing routes and slants and curls. Throw in his aggressive blocking, and it's a good pick IMO.

Compares to a cross between Welker and Dallas Clark. I see him as an Anthony Gonzales type, or a cross between Kevin Walter and Owen Daniels.

For those who were wondering about Jacoby Jones...I think this is the guy that fills that WR role that we had hoped Jacoby could nail down.

Casey is thick, but not bulky and slow. Good feet, good balance, and has skills in a wide array of areas.

These picks are definitely "value picks," IMO. I see the same thing a lot of you guys are seeing: Multi-role players who just have a knack for doing whatever is asked of them. This will PUSH those players on our roster who are beginning to think they are entitled to what they have earned. It sends a message, IMO.

I think DelJuan and Bulman are two types of go-getter "hustle" guys that are beginning to rub off on Smithiak: And the picks we have made thus far, IMO, are more of that type of player. I'm thrilled with this draft. Obviously, it remains to be seen how it really shakes out on the field in September, but I like the picks.

Training camp is going to be off the chain.

The Chargers picked Gartrell a while back.

Sorry, chasing kids outside and expecting another kid anyday now so my attention span is short and I am only available to check picks about once an hour. I liked the guys for what you could get and as a compliment. I liked his post season work.

It's called the wildcat. And Owen was a former QB too. If we were going to run the wildcat we would've last year. I think Kubiak has an offensive system in mind and it doesn't involve TE's that are passers.

o yah

just rember this before you dis the wildcard thing

miami has pennington an ok qb

an ok rb

relly no good wrs

just think what the texans can do with it

andra johnson owen danials steve slaton matt schaub kevin walter and the new kid Casey

Exactly. We have offensive talent, thus no need for gimmick plays on a regular basis. They may throw something out there just to keep the 'D' off balance, but I wouldn't draft Casey as my fantasy QB if I were you.

Ronnie Brown is much more than an ok RB.

I'd argue that Pennington is better than an ok QB as well.

Anyway, it's irrelevant to the conversation. I don't understand your point.

I don't think we will run a wildcat either. I think Casey will be a guy we line up in the backfield with Slaton and run routes from back there. I think he can be a backup TE and I would be interested in seeing how he does lining up at RB on the goal line.

I like the jennings kid. I hope the texans like him and move up a little and get him now. Then they could cut taylor and brown. If they dont, they must fell pretty good about chris brown.

amen

any ways i dont see us doing it every 3-4 time a game

i see it 1 or twice every couple games just to keep them wandering

*edit*

ok....here we go agin...

we have owen danials as a former qb and cassy
if we wanted to do a wildcat play we could
thats all im saying

and i wish they would because
miami made playoffs after a 1- 15 season the year before

it a risk but i would take it =p

People will laugh, but Ian Johnson would be a good pick right now. Check out his vids that are on youtube (good for four minutes of downtime while we wait for our turn to draft again)

Check at the run at about :30 on this clip, and tell me that's not Steve Slaton'ish

Dude has good footwork, has good vision even when running into the heart of the dline, and he has a one-cut and go type of running style.

Count me in as a fan of drafting Ian Johnson if he's there in the 6th.

Never heard of him, but I like the video. Guy breaks tackles.

He's the Boise St. runningback back that ran in the 2pt conversion on the Statue of Liberty play in overtime to win the Fiesta Bowl against Oklahoma.

We picked up Jared Zebransky, the QB of that team as an undrafted free agent... ironically, we might pick up Ian the RB! Wouldn't that be something.

Oh, okay. Thought he had went pro by now. Weird when a kid decides to stay in school these days...
