2009 NFL Draft Thread

From nfl.com about Casey...

Analysis

Positives: Unique all-around athlete capable of contributing in various ways at the next level. Instinctive football player who simply makes plays. Good playing speed, though his actual 40 time is questionable. Good initial burst off the line of scrimmage. Good agility to make defenders miss in the open field. Good toughness. Willing to absorb the hit to gain positive yardage, but more often dishes out punishment. Natural hands for the reception. Good hand-eye coordination. Secure ball-carrier. Mature athlete with professional experience due to his baseball career.

Negatives: Lacks a true role and will be drafted based on athletic potential. Though many scouts view him as a potential tight end prospect, Casey has limited experience in this role and virtually none as a traditional blocker out of the three-point stance. Only two years of D-I experience and operated in a spread system perfectly tailored to his unique skill set. Due to his time playing baseball is older than most rookies (will turn 25 in September).

Compares To: WES WELKER, New England meets DALLAS CLARK, Indianapolis -- It is very hard to find a comparison for Casey. His ability to play in a variety of blue collar roles brings back memories of what Welker did at Texas Tech and does for the Pats. Casey's pass catching ability is on par with Clark's, but he does not have the size and blocking skills to be considered a traditional tight end. Using him as an H-Back or slot receiver is his best option, as he needs to be in motion to be productive, evident by his breakout performance in 2008. Still, he is a neophyte to football, with just two years of college experience and was away from the game for three years. His birth certificate has a lower date (8/22/84) on it than most prospects in this draft.

Great pickup just who I wanted. People are going to fall in love with this guy. This draft has a NE feel to it with Barwin and Casey. Both are players that are real versatile and van play many positions.

James Casey will play RB for us... Wow that pick was teh biggest surprise. Great value though. Imagine having Casey and Daniels on the field at the same time. Crazy stuff.

Fan Favorite.....and perhaps a wild cat QB ? Takes a few touches from Steve Slaton per game.....and gives Little Shanahand a new toy on the goal line....cheap. I like the pick.

I'm not a big fan of Cedric Benson. But, I kinda wish now the Texans had ponied up the extra $$$ to sign him. Anyone have Ricky Williams number? (Hint: There's a joke in there for somebody).

 Hey, maybe AJ has talked his good buddy Edgerrin James into coming to Houston after he's cut by the Cards?

James Casey is a Texan in the 5th round! Holy Cow! I love the pick, it just confuses me with the TE in the 4th too.

Wow 3TP... Glover was brought in for CB. This draft is so interesting and not what I expected at all!

Four and a half rounds in the books and still only 9 RBs taken. And a third of them in the 4th. That tells me the consensus around the league is that this RB class sucks.

What can Casey do besides pass catching?

As a H-back he should be able to lineup with Steve, take away carries by being a Cooley type player.

I'm not fussed that we haven't taken a back. You can get big grinders later or undrafted, its the big play guys you have to draft early.

I'm interested to hear Smith and Kubiak give their rationale for the recent picks though.

I slept for a half hour and some how woke up and decided to find out our 5th rd pick was. James Casey!! Another TE? He is very good value but where are we going to use him? OD and Casey, nice duo but wow. Need to go back to sleep.

GO TEXANS!!!

Casey starts as your #4 RB....I excpect him to be the number one guy off the bench spelling Steve by the end of camp. He's perfect.

Picture is getting real clear isn't it. Good thing I'm not the GM, would have taken an RB by now.

WTH is Summit Mississippi ?

I'm telling ya....Casey is your RB off the bench and short & goal line back.

This is a very weird, very strange draft to me... but I absolutely love it. I think we got a lot of just real solid players that are going to be good football players for this team.

Cushing completes our LB position.
Barwin added as pass rusher opposite Mario.
Caldwell to come in as C/G... should eventually start.
Hill becomes our blocking TE and is said to be like a 3rd tackle on the field.
Casey becomes our longsnapper? Shanahan's trick guy- so versatile... great pick for a 5th rounder.
Still need a RB and I'm a happy happy camper.

Well said, I'm convinced. With all of these guys flying around, mini camp and training camp should be pretty interesting. Seems like we're selecting smart, academic all american types to boot.

What about someone like Chris Ogbonnaya as an undrafted FA or even a 7th round pick? He's got good size and physical ability. Not a lot of wear on the tires so he should have a lot to give.

I thought the Bears took Herman Johnson...sorry if I was in error. The commercials were killing me... Cut away on our two....cut away on our three....No Coors beer for me for a while.

Summit? You got me. I've driven through there a lot... never exited buy it's right off highway 55. Can't tell you anything about it. Probably...population 12. :)

If Casey comes in like that... I wonder if we target a RB similar to Slaton with this 6th. Is Javon Ringer still available? I'd love it. i like this draft a lot.

ps- the Dukers just went to Carolina.

OK. So I'm going to throw this out there.

Our problems offensively were scoring in the Red Zone, right?

Antoine Caldwell may come in as either G or C and that could help us in the interior of our line. And that could help us improve in the Red Zone.

Bruener was out most of last year and he was our in-line blocking TE. That may have been one of the reasons we had issues in the Red Zone. Anthony Hill takes over that spot. BUT... who's our line coach? Alex Gibbs. What does Alex Gibbs like to do? He likes to take Ex-TE's in the later rounds and turn them into tackles. I'm not saying, I'm just saying.

James Casey is a great TE prospect but could be an H-Back. This guy was expected to go in the 2nd or 3rd round. This is just a great value pick.

Of course, this is totally not what I eas expecting.

I guess Smithiak think that there is going to be a RB in the 6th and in FA.

Good ol' Charlie was asked about the Texans draft so far on the live chat and this is what he said,

"Yes I do. The one I especially like is Connor Barwin. Considering that Antonio Smith can play on first and second down against the run, Barwin can come in and rush on third down opposite Mario Williams. And I think Cushing will be an upgrade for them."
