2007 NFL Draft Day Two Thread

Define starter. Do you mean a spot starter and career backup or letgit full fledged 16 game starter?
McNair has one or two more years. I don't doubt that Smith has the talent to beat out Boller. If he can do that, he will get the chance to be a 16 game starter for as long as he warrants it.

I wouldn't sweat getting a kicker yet. You don't have to draft kickers, you can find them anywhere. Didn't we (the Houston Oilers) get Al Del Greco from a bar somewhere?

That's true..I think he bought me a drink...but of course, I was under aged then. :shades:

Datish is still available at Center.

Datish should be an OG, he struggled at C several times this season, I remember several bad snaps and I've heard as much if not more about him as an OG on the next level than a C.

As for kickers, Kris Brown improved throughout the year last year, I'm not sure on the credibility of his excuse of re-working his form last year causing his early struggles, but still he was fairly solid later in the year. Punter is the bigger need on special teams (although we could definitely use competition at both spots), but I'm not a big fan of drafting either position.

Any guesses for the 6th round pick coming up in a minute?

I'd guess LB with Prescott Burgess, Rory Johnson, Brandon Siler, and Tony Taylor all available. Maybe another DB with Michael Johnson, David Irons, and Ryan Smith available.

And we go with more OLine depth, Kasey Studdard from Texas. We finally pick a Longhorn for those of you fans that think there is a conspiracy against them.

Positives: Durable, tough blue-collar type who plays with true aggression … Lacks speed, balance and size, but can dominate when utilizing his impressive strength … Shows very good hand placement and punch, but needs to drive harder with his legs on contact … Will play with pain and works hard until the whistle … Will not back down from a challenge and shows good aggression finishing his blocks … Does a good job of picking up stunts and is alert to defensive coverages … Has a good understanding of game situations and does a good job of communicating with the center on combo blocks … Hard worker in the training room and takes pride in his leadership role … Has the short-area quickness to come out of his stance and attack the defender with force … Not sudden in his movements, but has the strong hands needed to lock on and sustain … Can get out and gain movement on the short pull, but will lose balance when having to run past the second level … When he gets his hands into the opponent's chest, he has the strength to gain advantage and move the pile … Has the upper-body power to combat counter moves and the punch to rock back the opponent … Keeps those hands active to latch on and drive through the defender … Showed much better kick slide in 2006 than he did in the past, especially when picking up stunts … His hand punch allows him to create separation, and he has the strong base to get stationary and protect the pocket.

Negatives: Has marginal upper-body muscle definition and lower-body development … Bit stiff in his hips, and possesses a soft midsection … Shorter than ideal and needs to add more bulk to his frame … Best when blocking in the short area, as he gets too narrow with his stance and loses balance when having to run long distances … Lacks the agility and lateral quickness to get out and seal on the edge … His hip stiffness prevent him from rolling and generating explosion off the ball, as he is more prone to bend at his waist than at the knees … Will cut and leave his feet too often when working in space … Despite his strong hand punch, he fails to extend his arms in attempts to make reach blocks … Too slow moving his feet to mirror the defender in pass protection … Tends to get up on his toes when asked to trap and pull, leaving him susceptible to being jerked down by the defender's hand action … Liability on the sweeps, as he struggles to locate targets on the move … Best when blocking in-line, as he doesn't have the quickness, nor does he take good angles to neutralize linebackers in space … Must do a better job of keeping his feet when moving past the line of scrimmage … Has very strong hands, but will short-arm, lean and push the defender when he loses mirror rather than grab and hold on in attempts to steer.

Compares To: Kendyl Jacox, Miami Dolphins -- Like Jacox, Studdard is a physical battler working in-line, but lacks the balance, loose hips and foot speed to be effective getting out on pulls and traps … He gets up on his toes too much, causing him to struggle against moving targets, but his hand strength is evident once he locks on and controls the defender with brute force … Because of his lack of hip roll, he might be better suited to play center at the next level.

I was beginning to think so! Seems like a good pick. Known as a classic overachiever....like the sound of that.

Studdard will be a project, if he even makes the team. He could very well end up on the practice squad though. Oh well, time to run errands now. I doubt anything significant will happen with the next pick.

Maybe we might get that kicker or punter yall are looking for in the 7th.

Not flashy but I like it. The :d: should be fun to watch.

I agree. I love watching a good defense almost as much as watching some big offensive plays.

I've never really liked watching the defense in action during a game, but last year turned that around for me. Demeco and Mario was a thrill to watch! What's nice about them is that they should get better and better as time goes on. Adding Okoye to that recipe, and the defense should be the highlight of our games. Add the new mix to the offense we have now, and I believe this year will be the breakout year we've all looked forward to! :texflag:

I like the fact that we are building the defense up with some youngsters who grade high coming out of college...now we just need them to play to their status...and it should start to get fun around here soon.

The 6th rounder, the guard out of Texas clearly "does not" fit the profile of the type of lineman they've been getting so far ? So I dunno what to think ?
I see his Dad played for the Bronocs, maybe his family is friends with the Kubiaks ? Kinda like Kubiak drafted one of his sons buddies from Colorado State last year.

From a thread I just started. Please forgive the misspelling in the thread though. Could you fix that for me Vin if Tex84 hasn't yet?

Compares To: Reggie White, ex-Philadelphia/Green Bay … To compare a player to White is something that can not be done without much consideration … But the more you see Okoye on game films, the more convinced you become that he will not only have a long, fruitful career, but will continue to grow both physically and mentally...

...Okoye is The NFL Draft Report's top-rated player for the 2007 draft.

So with Studdard on board, is it bye bye hodgon time?

I like the Studdard pick, he has experience playing against some top D-linemen in college, and while some say he doesnt fit into the ZBS i think he'll be fine.

Im liking this draft a lot, its just too bad we didnt have a second to play with (yeah yeah that second is matt schuab...)

I really give Rick and Kubes a high grade this off season considering all the holes they had and the small amount of money they had to do it.

I am not sure if it spells the end of Hogdon, not yet anyway. It all depends on what Frye and Studdard do in camp and during preseason. They are late round guys.

Just wait for next offseason when we do have money to spend!

I just hope they do not try and do it like the redskins, ya know over paying for players and giving away draft picks in signings. I want them still to be very choosy in who they go after.

Also, there is still june 1st cuts. Anyone have any info on who might be on the chopping block?

I'd like to see either Selvin Young or Jackie Battle myself.

Ya, you mentioned Battle. I still like Ben Patrick here as well. I wonder why he has dropped so far. There must be something we don't know about him. I like Battle right here as well.

Ben Patrick just went, would have been intriguing. Maybe Michael Johnson from Arizona since he's still available? Maybe a LB like Rory Johnson or Brandon Siler? Darius Walker or Chansi Stuckey?
