2007 NFL Draft Day Two Thread

Into the 5th Round, and still no OLineman drafted ? Anybody else surprised ?
not me...I've stated over and over that they wouldn't take an OL since they signed Salaam and Black to back up Winston and Spencer...I think we like our Guards too...the only ? is at C imo....and I think Flanagan and McKinney are gonna be fine there for one more year.

Why add another mediocre one at this point?
The Packers took Alan Barbe and the Cowboys took Doug Free right before us, so they must have seen some potential there ? And both of those guys were excellent candidates for our system.
And I get a kick out of some people claiming the Texans apathy about drafting an Olineman is a good sigh about Spencer's recover. We all know its a long time before that situaion is clarified ?

We upgraded our line by getting rid of the incredible self sacking QB.

Dan Mozes for our Center? What do you think vinny?

Actually, I am just resigned to another year of poor o-line performance. If they are average I would be surprised; average would be a nice step up. I don't think Schaub will change that much about the line play.

We are closer to thin then set at depth. If Spencer doesn't come back, and if Salaam continues his trend of nagging injuries, we might be in trouble. That scenario is just as likely as Spencer being 100% and Salaam finding the fountain of youth.

Center is weak too - I don't really want to see Hodgdon again, and I don't think Flanagan holds up the entire year. That leaves McKinney and ... no one.

Tyler (DC): First the Redskins drafted someone with the last name Landry, now they have drafted someone with the first name Dallas. What is happening to the Redskins' franchise?

KEITH KIDD: Enough said.

too funny (from espn live draft tracker)

We upgraded our line by getting rid of the incredible self sacking QB.
But how much of an upgrade ? Can Schaub's installation as our new QB in and of itself be enough to make our OLine's pass protection acceptable ?
I wish I shared your optimism that it was only that simple.

Paul (NC): Do you think David Carr will beat out delhomme? I believe Carr will be a better than average quarterback if he gets better protection.

KEITH KIDD: Delhomme will be the starter. Carr needs to sit behind him and learn for a year before he gets back on the field, although it can all change if Delhomme struggles. I know the Panthers hope that Carr is the answer in 2008.

I like what I read on Frye on the NFL site. He positives are good, and his negatives are coachable. A good solid backup that could very be a starter if he loses a few bad habits.

And he's built like an offensive line. I like this one. Good pick.

Yeah, well, there's too much of that around here right now, and it's unjustified.

Unjustified? How do you characterize the optimism that is mainly based on "the Texans made the move, so it is good".

I take contention with the fact that our bad o-line got better without Spencer and with another year on the legs of Salaam and Flanagan. I don't think it is too pessimistic to argue that the addition of Jordan Black and an unproven QB has not fixed the line.

Brandon Frye it is.

Huh - I guess the coaches thought we needed o-line help too. Makes for a crowded roster going into camp. Black to guard? Hodgdon gone?

Really athletic for the position...Has decent size and the frame to get bigger...He moves well and has great feet...Tough and will play hurt...Very strong...Excels as a pass blocker but can run block as well...Good bloodlines...Still has some upside.

Weaknesses:
Was only a starter for one season in college...Will need to bulk up...He plays too high and with poor leverage...Doesn't have great balance...Weight room strength doesn't always translate to the field...Soft?...Raw and not yet a finished product.

Notes:
His father, Stan Rome, played football and basketball at Clemson and went on to play wide receiver for the NFL Kansas City Chiefs...Was a tight end in high school and began his college career as a defensive end...A real interesting prospect who certainly has some physical tools to work with...May be a nice developmental guy

Finally an OLineman pick, if only as a "development guy" for the future as his description says.
I dunno, but maybe this dearth of OLine picks were bugging Messers Schaub & McClaine and they got on the horn to S & K ?

Hey just got here, was watching the draft with some of my friends. I am Ok with the Okoye pick. The big problem is thats 4 years with a first round DL. I like the Jones pick. The corner in the 4th was good, but another SS? I would have liked to look at another position, maybe FS or a LB. And the Frye pick, its cool. As a whole, so far, I am not mad or happy. Just kinda bleh.

for whatever reason, someone on the NFL network said at least twice that Frye would have to swith to RT. He never offered up why, but the video they showed they all complimented his moving and blocking.

What the heck is up w/Mel Kiper's hair??? Helmet head for sure...

Hey i may have missed it, cause I just started watching day 2...have we drafted a kicker yet? Are their any strong kickers available? Should we draft one? Your opinion wanted...

No kicker as of yet.

Martin you forget TJ and babin were capers picks, ya know drafting square pegs to fit in round holes. This year and last year we drafted very athletic guys.

Well, are you happier now? Still seems like you have a glass half empty take on it. Casserly's gone, remember?

Draft Insiders says he doesn't have the ability to play OT in the NFL....I bet he will play mostly at G.

It's a wonder Deion didn't go to Troy Smith's house and stick a microphone in his face asking how it feels to have been passed over so many times....as he did to Quinn yesterday.

He wont do that because of a certain thing that I will not mention. (it is not the school they went to either) :bat:

I wouldn't sweat getting a kicker yet. You don't have to draft kickers, you can find them anywhere. Didn't we (the Houston Oilers) get Al Del Greco from a bar somewhere?

Del Greco was already an established NFL kicker though...it's not like we just took some guy out of a bar.
