2007 NFL Draft Day Two Thread

Bennett's a good pick here but I really liked Kenny Scott(CB, GA Tech) over him as far as players with similar potential. Bennett has good coverage skills but his tackling looks very suspect. Hopefully Dunta can straighten him out.

Troy Smith will be an NFL starter in 3 years. Write that down.

Written.

First, he showed up to the combine out of shape, which makes teams question his dedication. And second, when he has one-on-one meetings with NFL coaches, they come away with the sense that he doesn't have an ideal grasp of how to read defenses.

If Smith wants to use a 7th on him, I won't be that pissed. But if he uses a 6th . . .

Good one... What's the difference between Donovan McNabb as a prospect and Troy Smith, besides 2"? This guy is a steal right now.

If it was only the two inches he would have been drafted already. McNabb has a lot of intangiables, such as leadership, pocket pressence and his run time was better. Plus no questions about character. Although Smiths is only minor per say but McNabb did not have any.

Smith doesnt' have leadership or pocket presence? The guy threw 30 TD's, 6 INT's, and 65% comp. for the #1 team all year. Despite the fact that he came to the combine out of shape, he still had the best vertical and broad jump and 2nd best 40 of any QB. To deny his value in the 5th is foolish.

I'm going to be upset if they don't pick up an offensive lineman in this draft somewhere. :bat:

If there are any left that are worth picking up, that is.

Mike (Tampa): Kidder, where will Troy Smith go, and will he EVER see the field?

KEITH KIDD: Look for Jacksonville to maybe take him with their 5th round pick, with the uncertaininty of both Leftwich and Gerrard. It makes sense he could compete for the third sport with Quinn Gray.

would be interesting

i can't provide link because it is live chat on ESPiN draft chat

Yeah I saw that as well.

Mozes is still around. I found this on him.

Strengths:
Smart with outstanding instincts and awareness...A hard worker and leader with outstanding intangibles...Tough and physical...Motor never stops...Nasty and has a killer instinct...Technically sound and does all the little things...He makes the line calls...Is versatile and can play more than one position...Has a ton of experience.

Weaknesses:
Undersized and doesn't have the bulk you look for...Has short arms...Not a great athlete and lacks quickness...Struggles with massive tackles...Is not stout at the point and he gets pushed back...Does not get a great push in the run game...Has some health questions with his shoulders and hip so durability is a huge concern.

Notes:
Started at guard early in his career before moving to center in 2005...Is not nearly the pro prospect that his college press clippings would lead you to believe and is a classic case of an All-American college football player who simply does not have the physical tools...The type you hate to doubt and he could secure a roster spot but at most he profiles as a backup in the pros...Winner of the Rimington Trophy.

Overall: Harrison appeared in 10 of 11 contests as a true freshman in 2003 making six total tackles and breaking up one pass. In 2004, he started all 11 games at strong safety registering 45 total tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, two fumble recoveries, one interception, one pass breakup, and one blocked punt. Harrison again started all 11 games in 2005 and collected 67 total tackles, two tackles for loss, three interceptions, and four pass breakups. In 2006, he played in all 12 games with 11 starts coming at safety and cornerback (played off the bench against San Jose State because of an injury), finishing the year with 68 total tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, one interception, five pass breakups, and one fumble recovery earning an honorable mention All-Pac 10 selection.

Harrison lacks ideal cover skills and range but he has good speed and athletic ability for his ... For complete overview, strengths and weaknesses, login above or become an Insider.

Positives: Has a big frame with room to carry at least another 10 pounds of bulk for a potential move to Cover-2 linebacker … Solidly built with minimal body fat (4.6 percent), well-defined chest, arms and shoulders and tapered thighs … Generally in position to make plays on the ball … Very athletic in his stride, showing ease of movement in attempts to close on the ball … Plays with good effort in pass coverage, but needs to show more aggression in run force … Makes the adjustment calls in the secondary and is good at recognizing the switch-offs when playing in the zone … Has the foot speed and hands to mirror the receiver in man coverage, getting into position quickly to try to reroute his opponent … Has the foot speed and balance dropping back in the zone and is alert to receivers' threats while maintaining eye contact on the quarterback … Shows good recovery quickness and is capable of running with backs and tight ends in the short area … Plays the man better than the ball, but he gets a good jump on the ball in flight, showing the range to close from behind … Has just adequate take-up quickness trying to catch up in pass coverage, but can adjust better to coverage in the zone and is quick to anticipate the pass … Times his hits well and keeps his pads down and arms extended to wrap and secure … Takes good angles in pursuit and uses his hands efficiently to shed blocks … Effective at pushing the outside running game back inside and generates decent pop on contact … Has enough speed to avoid blockers and pressure the pocket on the blitz … Demonstrates fluid hip turn and good hand extension looking the ball in when attempting to intercept.

Negatives: Has an imposing frame for a safety, but doesn't play with the physicality that you'd expect from a player that size … Has questionable ball skills in the deep zone, as he fails to get a quick read and is then caught out of position … Has had some maturity issues, letting his academics slip to the point that he was held out of 2006 preseason drills until he improved his grades … Not timid, but seems to shy away from contact, especially in run force … will take several plays off, then make a big hit, then disappear from the action again (lacks consistency) … Has excellent weight room numbers, but they fail to translate to the football field (good wrap-up tackler, but not a physical one) … Has good leaping ability, but just seems disinterested in elevating and combating for jump balls … Tries to run around blockers too much rather than facing up … Generally gets fooled on naked bootlegs and there are questions about his read and diagnose skills … Will bite on the receiver's double moves and fails to generate a second gear to chase down the receiver when the opponent gets behind him.

Compares To: Michael Boulware, Seattle Seahawks … Like Boulware, Harrison looks the part of an imposing strong safety, but his weight room strength fails to translate to the field … He is best when playing the man, as he seems disinterested in making plays in a pile … He can be fooled often on naked bootlegs and tries to run around blockers rather than engaging them … He doesn't have the second gear needed to mirror the receivers on deep routes, but if he is to play strong safety at the next level, he will have to perform with more aggression.

I don't think Harrison will be a starter, but I bet whoever he replaces on the bench will help the team.

Do yall think he could be a starter and a FS starter?

He is in the fith I think right now you can't list him as a starter, he will help on special teams right away but maybe next year be a starter unless he impresses in camp. But don't count on it.

This guy will not start next year or probably ever. He'll help ST but that's about it. Wish we could've taken Kenny Scott, who will eventually start at CB for someone IMO. Harrison was definitely not a BPA pick.

Into the 5th Round, and still no OLineman drafted ? Anybody else surprised ?

More like disappointed. We do have a couple of good o-lineman and then the remainder of the roster is full of poor to middling ones. Why add another mediocre one at this point?

Anything past the 4th round is not likely to be a strong player anyway, otherwise they would have already been taken. Yeah, there have been a few exceptions, but the 5th round on is like picking up throw-aways in free agency. If you can replace a bad player on your team with a mediocre player, you just upgraded yourself.
