Texans vs Vikings Game Aug 9 Preseason 1

I like Patterson. I just am going off of what the coaches show us. When they pull a guy after his first drive that was a pretty dominant td drive it tells me they view him as a starter or key player. Patterson to me is similar to Greg Mancz. First interior OL off the bench.
Greg Mancz ! Yikes, there's a blast from the past !

I've watched the video of the play and Moore's leg was not fallen on..........it was caught under his own body.

From another video that was sent to me with a different perspective, I did a frame-by-frame analysis:

Moore was actually brought down from the shoulders.

The arms slid down without actual solid grip while Moore was already coming down..

There was no full body weight of the defender's body dropped on the legs.
His left foot caught in the turf as he caught his left foot under his own weight when he fell back.

Anytime a ball carrier is brought down from behind we will hear claims of hip drop tackle. That's why it doesn't work as a penalty. I think fining hip drop tacklers after the fact does work, because the league has a chance to determine if it was actually a hip drop tackle.
When you see a hip drop tackle, you know you saw one. When you have to talk about "elements of a hip drop tackle," it's probably not a hip drop tackle.

What did you think of Ersery?
I missed first quarter, so had to go back to review. Ersery is massively large LT but has good body control & balance. Tends to reach and get weight forward on his skies but collects and redistributes body weight just in time to maintain contact in the moment. He is a developing NFL LT, who will struggle against speed, needs to quicken footwork technique but uses reach to keep rushers from beating him. Like his mental make-up too. Think he was excellent pick @ dire positional need.

Good tackle from behind. The players themselves imo probably doesn’t even know what a proper hip drop tackle is.

Wrestle, twist and drop your weight onto their legs. It was notorious in rugby league

Fisher won't slide down much because the guys behind him aren't good. On the flip side, I'm for keeping Ersery at LT until I see he can't handle it. Let the coaches figure out who should play at RT.

I don't doubt the coaches are thinking this about Ersery. Especially if he does well the next game. He has the physicality to handle it. Right now, his ceiling appears high.

Exactly.

Offense was sloppy after Mills left, but it's preseason. I wonder if Mertz is the great grandson of Fred and Ethyl? It would explain a lot.
Did Fred and Ethyl play pro football? Otherwise what does him being related to TV show characters have to do with the kind of player Graham Mertz is or will be, I am being contrary when it comes to your comment, I know you were just kidding around.

It’s not as much about results as it is about execution & fundamentals. Another rookie OC is definition of insanity if you expect different results. Watching other games just to get a feel for they’re progress with both schematic and player changes.iy

Jacksonville offense looks completely different and promising. Steelers also look better, have a suffocating defense and smash T a score on this to emphasize point, I don’t care, it’s not enjoyable product which is sad.
:hankpalm:
Are you basing your opinion off of when we took out our starters and second string players, because if you are you and being foolish. This is the first of three preseason games and there are instances of teams struggling in the preseason who overcame those struggles in the regular season. It is especially misguided to base your prediction on the success or failure of our Texans based on what we saw in limited first string action in preseason game one! Come back down to earth and give our team a fair chance to improve and play the way we expect them to play!

I’d say Slovis is ahead in the competition at this point. If Mertz improves he gets the spot. If he doesn’t i’d find a reason to put him on IR and give him a redshirt season.

Does this really matter? If it gets down to either one of those two, the season is trashed anyway.

This is what I love about PS games. And by love I mean it sucks ass.

Have I mentioned I’d rather see televised joint practices instead of PS games?

Oh well, only 2 more to suffer through.

Dude it’s been an issue for 23 years.

*RB Jawhar Jordan looked very good, IMO!
*Noel and Higgins looked like they expected to be there and expected to make plays.
*The Offense simply made sense... the run blocking looked organized... there are common sense quick WR routes/etc... that's how Mills completes passes while the LDE is running untouched loops around Blake Fischer.
*Toglia, Settle looked like they disrupted a variety of run and pass plays.
*I thought the secondary looked great! They didn't make many plays but they were consistently under control, in the right place, with pretty good coverage, and good in run support.
*overall, I thought the defensive players were very disciplined in their run fits.

I saw an offense that has successfully undergone a C change in one off-season, which is very impressive... Now, let's see if they can turn it into something special.
I saw a very well coached football team with near 100% total buy-in from the players.

>I should say that I did really like what I saw from Blake Fischer early last season... so...
I thought Jordan looked fast and somewhat shifty. I don’t know about the secondary. They seemed more late than great. I hoped for more out of Mertz. Mertz looked like a TC Hertz.

The main takeaway from today was Ersery. He was manhandling those 2's. Expect a lot of runs on the left side in 2025.

I think Fisher had an injury in the off-season and showed up out of shape and unprepared. You don't go from competitive to terrible without a new factor involved.
Yep, Ersery took a positive step. He exited his chrysalis and his wings started to dry. Hope he becomes a Monarch.

In repeatedly reviewing the Moore videos, besides the foot stick in the turf with knee hyperextension that I previously noted near the beginning of the tackle bringing in concern for an ACL rupture, I noticed something interesting that could put the patellar tendon in question.

As I previously posted, Moore basically sat his own full weight while falling back on his left leg, thus hyperflexing his knee and thus placing a great deal of load on the patellar tendon near the end of the play. If this were a cut and dry patella you would not expect for him to be able to keep his left leg in extension. But he did at the very end of injury videos as he rolled onto his back. It's then that I noticed that he crossed his right leg under his left leg, apparently allowing his left leg to actually be passively supported in extension. How pertinent this observation is in determining his injury/injuries will ultimately be answered by the MRI later today.

Good review. The only things that I would disagree with is that the DL allowed too many up the middle runs and there were distinct problems setting the edges. I am also not too confident in the center position............those that have looked halfway decent have a terrible time staying healthy.

I don't disagree with your statement for sure. But they've said that about Mills and now I'm not sure that Mills could not hold his own as a starter in this scheme.

Did we survive without in

Fishers looking like a bust
I would love to understand how a player like Fisher regresses so rapidly. He looks nothing like the player I saw last preseason nor in those chunks of time the first half of the season when he got playing time as the swing tackle... Late in the season, as the starter at RT, he certainly got exposed. However, he just had some bad snaps. He wasn't getting beat every play!... Now, he looks like a guy that doesn't have the strength, quickness, or fundamental skills to play in the NFL... WTF happened?!

Has to be an injury. Only thing that would make sense.

This frame demonstrates a moment before Moore' left foot stuck in the turf and hyperextended his knee. It also illustrates that Jamal Hill grabbed Moore's shoulders to bring him down.

I addressed this recently (this past Wednesday):

Based on reports from TC, Fisher has faced significant struggles and has been demoted on the depth chart at right tackle. He has been getting beaten consistently by the D has given up too many (virtual) sacks. He has been called for enumerable false starts in back-to-back team drills. Popovich who is not known to be very tolerant demoted Fisher after pulling him out of several drills.
Fisher, who started camp working with the first-team offense, has been relegated to second-team reps reps since the pads came on. Even while playing with the second team, Fisher was called for a couple of false starts and was subbed out, indicating his struggles are persistent. That has relegated him to third team reps.

All of his struggles have to do with loss of quickness, lateral mobility and loss of ability to hold his ground. I'm beginning to think that his regression may be having to do with the knee injury he sustained at Notre Dame. In the 2021 TC, he sustained a knee injury which was reported as "minor." It was a meniscus tear, which the HC encouraged him to play through. He tried, but finally was taken to surgery. And in order to get him back on the field as quickly as possible, since the team was in dire need for his services, they opted to excise rather than repair, saying he would be back within 8 weeks (a repair would have totally ruled out the season). As it turns out, he could not return until 12 1/2 weeks due to setbacks. When you have significant setbacks post meniscus excisions, you are likely to have damaged articular cartilage and setting yourself up for bone on bone.

Be aware that following a meniscus excision (meniscectomy), arthritic changes can initiate as early as 2 to 5 years [perfect timing for Fisher's problems] after an arthroscopic partial meniscectomy. The risk can be even higher for athletes who have a high BMI and heavily rely on their knees as would an offensive tackle.

We’ve seen plenty of Mills though. He’s a backup that can probably hold it together for a game or 2, but if he sees significant playing time the Texans won’t be doing much with him either.

And in preseason he’s a guy who always looks decent against backups but just doesn’t have much when the talent level rises. I don’t have him in the top tier of backup QBs. Maybe not even in the 2nd tier.

Bottom line is for whatever reason he doesn't have the feet to keep up with avg speed rushers off the edge. Put a Miles Garret/Max Crosby/Hunter/WA over him and Fisher looks like a 7th grader going against a Sr. who will be playing for the Longhorns next season. His feet are this biggest reason for his getting beat/false starts etc... If I had to guess he's got a slight unreported knee injury.

Regarding Fischer, the injury history doc talks about, etc. ..

Its too risky to take guy with that history in The 2nd round.

Green…same thing. Only the first round.

Juice? You guessed it. Same issue.

Why Nick…why?
? He started his ND freshman season 2021 and was injured game one but returned to play in the playoff. In 22 and 2023 he started all games at right tackle for Notre Dame If I remember correctly. He did get a concussion his first year with Houston.
I think he was a very good pick in round two. My guess is the concussion he received late 2024 missing two games may have impacted him more than is thought. There was a rush to get him back on the field last season.
