Texans vs Vikings Game Aug 9 Preseason 1

I’d put Slovis in lead for PS based on this game. But not surprised by how Mertz has played first live action since torn ACL and wide eyed rookie. Considering this season a red shirt and hoping Johnson/Caley can coach him up to compete next offseason.

Wait, you mean we don’t tar and feather a rookie QB who was drafted to sit and learn because he is a little wide eyed in his first live action at any level in nearly a year, and won’t play a single snap this season? Are you crazy man? Who brought the tar… I have feathers. A pitchfork or two would be nice. Maybe a torch or two. We will be tracking this Mertz character at night. A bloodhound? Anyone got a bloodhound?

First drive OL was Ersery-Scruggs-Andrews-Ingram-Fisher

Second drive Ersery and Andrews came out of the game. Tells you what they think of those two. And Tomlinson/Howard were bubble wrapped. I think starting 5 is set.
You seem to be very confidant that Andrews has beaten out Patterson for the starting center job ?

Sick & tired being bludgeoned by 3rd stringers of a very comparable roster. It’s either coaching or lack of talent? All the back-up Vikings QB’s look better than Texans. Texans OL looks unchanged from last year (least from depth perspective). Nothing there in RB room! Both Jawrar and Brevin Jordan unworthy of a roster spot.
Yeah.

YAY British Brooks
A little too little little too late. I admittedly am rooting for British Brooks but I don't want to read too much into anything. I didn't get to see the game. I had to follow it on YouTube but I didn't see where British Brooks played very much.

Regardless of a win or a loss it seems people are saying the team has a lot of work to do. Here's to hoping the team looks more prepared for the regular season next preseason game! Let's hope we showcase more depth because we don;t need key players injured derailing our season.

At the end of the day, I’m happy with the first few drives! Davis Mills got a touchdown, Braxton Berrios looks like a great pickup, and our second-string defense only allowed a field goal to the Vikings’ starters. Mertz wasn’t what I expected based on what 610 said about him, but I’m just thankful there were no injuries!

I get it but the RB situation is still pending which aids to the look at BB as well as his versatility in special teams. He did have menicsus surgery last year and now fully recovered.

Good thing about the team depth. The depth players won’t replace the starters in a wholesale nature unless this team goes up by 40.

I believe they got the players to handle the one here and one there. I also understand this is GM1 of the Pre Season and Caserio won’t be done shopping until all the cuts have been made after PS GM3. If there’s better options out there, then I’m on board with adding the best players available.
Yawn. Gotta grind through watching the 40+ players who won’t be on the roster fighting to be #52 or #53 or PS here or somewhere. Our #2’s seemed well oiled. If any team has to go deeper into their roster it’s all over anyway.

I would like to donate my neighbor's basset hound. Oh my ears!

Patterson looked to have a pretty nice showing with the 2 and 3’s today. I think Patterson is a solid OL piece.

OK so is it possible that Patterson could help us at guard or is he strictly a center ?
I like Patterson. I just am going off of what the coaches show us. When they pull a guy after his first drive that was a pretty dominant td drive it tells me they view him as a starter or key player. Patterson to me is similar to Greg Mancz. First interior OL off the bench.

You would think it’s 52-0 reading these comments. How many times do we have to say it. Say it with me, then write it on the chalkboard 100 times. Preseason results are completely and totally meaningless. In fact it’s often the best teams that look the worst. There is a reason for that, which may be semi-obvious to longtime observers, or frankly anyone who watched the game and made note of who both teams played.
It’s not as much about results as it is about execution & fundamentals. Another rookie OC is definition of insanity if you expect different results. Watching other games just to get a feel for they’re progress with both schematic and player changes.

Jacksonville offense looks completely different and promising. Steelers also look better, have a suffocating defense and smash mouth offense (RB Kaleb Johnson is going to be a workhorse in the middle). Even the Giants look more functional offensively from last season. If you want to attach a score on this to emphasize point, I don’t care, it’s not enjoyable product which is sad.

Who disappointed you that is projected to make the team? The offense was humming with Mills and the rest of the guys projected to make the team. When the UFL gang came in they naturally sputtered. In the words of Rodgers after he whooped up on the Texans many moons ago…

For a while I thought we got a good push in the middle by the DL. If that continues into the regular season Hunter & Anderson should both do well with nowhere for the QB to step up. To steal a golf term 'Let the big dogs eat'.
I mean our defensive starters never saw the field. Imagine trying to step up anyway while trying to find a seam in our secondary when they are on the field. Anyway our two’s, or who I thought would be our twos were better than the Vikes’.

Virtually every team is running out their starters, least opening of games. What are Texans so scared off? They must get some reps & live action too.

Preseason to me is about individuals so with that, my risers and fallers…

Risers -

Ersery - really focused in on this guy. in one preseason game, he showed me more physicality and swarm menatality than anytime in the era of the lazy stoner known as Tunsil. Instant starter at either tackle spot. Great start to his career. Nick finally hit on a lineman.

Both centers - both guys appeared to play well, but i think Jake has the edge. They werent going best of the best..but both did well when i honed on. In fairness…didnt see every snap from them, as my eye was watching different things.

Dare - took advantage of his opportunity to the tune of 5.8 YPC. The starting line balled…see above..and was opening holes any RB should have success with, but Dare took advantage and probably sealed his spot.,

Braxton Barrios - opened a lot of eyes out there. Not as a res[turned]r…but as a receiver. Considering hes been the best returned]r in camp…he is making this team. Great job.

Mills - limited action, but looked in command, accurate and decisive. He appears to have made yet another step and now looks like a very good backup. Ill add that Noel flashed a bit too in limited duty.

EJ Speed - the only guy that may get signifiant snaps this year that played well and really stood out. His name is correct!

A few other ldefensive guys flashed here or there although overall the D wasnt very good, especially 3rd downs.…but ill just list some guys that flashed…Jamal Hill, Togiai, Toohill, Neimann, Tremon Smith.

Fallers -

Blake Fischer - he played almost the whole gsme. BTW thats not good. They are trying to get him some snaps to turn it around. Once we got to theor 3rd teams]ers he looked pretty good overall. But with their 1’s out there he was not good. Beat too much on the edge. In fairness, i focused more on Ersery, but what i did see…not too good.

Metchie - if Barrios was a riser..lthat means almost by default that Metchie is a faller. He did some decent things at times, but decent wont cut it in this group. He has to shine. Not seeing it. I see him as a cut. Id say somewhat the same with Watson, who never touched the ball. Camp reports say Hutch is stepping up. Watson and Metchie or the cuts for me right now.

Mertz - faller might be too strong considering his place in the food chain, but if he had any chance of making this team…it went to zero today. PS is possible if they dont find a hangnail.

Darrell Taylor - he played quite a few snaps, and did nothing of note. Ive heard great things, but where was it? I think he is making the ream, but i want to see more going forward.

I wont say faller…but i was hoping for more out of Myles Bryant. Another camp stsr…he was just a guy out there. I do like his versatility so hes likely got a spot, bit another guy i want more from if he has it.

I might be missing a guy or two but those are the ones i made note of.

Patterson seemed to handle the line calls and pointing out defense. Announcer mentioned saying plays went smoothly (my word).

Just some people I thought did well in the game. Nothing spectacular but something they can hopefully build on

Mills - 4/5 for 50 yards with 10.0 yard average and 1 TD and 0 INTs for a QB rating of 147.9.
Ogunbowale - 5 carries for 29 yards and a 5.8 average.
Berrios - 3 receptions for 33 yards and a 11.0 average.

Not surprising the LBs did pretty well. Don't know which ones we'll keep and of course injuries will play a big role but we may have one of the best LB corps in the league. Ones that did pretty good in today's game

E.J. Speed was a hitting machine.
Jamal Hill
Nick Niemann

*RB Jawhar Jordan looked very good, IMO!
*Noel and Higgins looked like they expected to be there and expected to make plays.
*The Offense simply made sense... the run blocking looked organized... there are common sense quick WR routes/etc... that's how Mills completes passes while the LDE is running untouched loops around Blake Fischer.
*Toglia, Settle looked like they disrupted a variety of run and pass plays.
*I thought the secondary looked great! They didn't make many plays but they were consistently under control, in the right place, with pretty good coverage, and good in run support.
*overall, I thought the defensive players were very disciplined in their run fits.

I saw an offense that has successfully undergone a C change in one off-season, which is very impressive... Now, let's see if they can turn it into something special.
I saw a very well coached football team with near 100% total buy-in from the players.

>I should say that I did really like what I saw from Blake Fischer early last season... so...

How many QBs can a team hold in PS?
NFL teams can carry 16 players on the practice squad. So, the max number of QBs on the practice squad is 16. The Browns may approach that number this season.

* NFL teams can carry a 17th player on the practice squad if that player is part of the NFL's International Pathway Program.
