Texans New 2024 Defense

Hansen looked good! Where did he come from?

Jake Hansen is from a football family. His dad Shad was BYU’s all-time leader in tackles. Jake was a top LB for Illinois. He had a season where he started 9 games, but still managed 7 forced fumbles. His injuries probably prevented him from gaining much higher recognition. Hope he can stay healthy and productive during the teams time of need.

I feel like a defense played a great game. For having 5 starters outs. We had some guys really step up. We definitely have depth on this side of the ball.
I don't disagree. I was very impressed with the defense.

Except, more than a "complimentary" game, this is a situational game. In those situations when you need a score to win a game you need your offense, your QB in particular, to go & get you those points.

Similarly if you're up by 2 & you turn it over to your defense with 1:40 left... they got to get that stop. Especially if you have a Will Anderson Jr or a Danielle Hunter, moreso if you've got both.

One of these days we're going to need them to get that stop against Mahomes, or Goff, or Jackson, or Burrows.

Also as I'm watching more of the video he gives Pitre a big shoutout. I don't think people realize just how good Pitre is playing right now, especially in coverage. I keep seeing people wanting trades for a new slot corner or nickle and it's starting to be a theme but opposing coaches and film junkies all unanimously love Pitre in his new role.

Autry is making this defense cook!

It's going to be awesome rushing the passer with

WA, Autry, Edwards, Hunter

Best front 4 in the NFL when it comes to rushing the passer.
Can’t wait! We’ve yet to see all four on the field together this season but this defense is on track to shatter the franchise sack record.

Then you’ve got Settle and Barnett in reserve as well. Oh and then there is the Christian Harris
/Devin White blitzing wrinkle they will be able to add to the gameplan as needed once Harris returns. They’ve flashed it with White as he’s become acclimated in the system.

Then you’ve got Settle and Barnett in reserve as well.
Settle definitely deserves a shoutout. When he was signed, I thought little of it. Settle has career highs in snaps, tackles, QB pressures, and had tied his career high in sacks (5) after 11 games. I'm impressed and getting everyone on the field and ready for the playoffs will be a big, and necessary advantage for the Texans. If you're going to lose the LOS battle on one side, you better win big on the other side.

I've already watched the game 3 times looking at different aspects of the game... but i haven't paid enough attention to even notice who our 3rd LB was.

Which brings up the question. Which two LBs will get the majority of snaps come playoffs?

Next year the core members of this defense are returning. Assuming the youngsters elevate their play another year with DeMeco and company, i’d expect the defense to hit another level. That level being more consistently dominant. More time putting QBs in a pressure cooker and less WTF lapses in judgment allowing a handful of big plays each game.

What made me most happy was the pass rush and subsequent lockdown secondary. Nick nailed the Kamari/Bullock picks and a healthy Stingley was 1st team all pro like we all knew he would be. And the Texans pass rush was a constant all season even with Will Anderson missing time.

Speaking of Will… terminator is a great nickname for him! He has DPOY upside going into year 3.

My biggest disappointment this season was Christian Harris’ unavailability. He might as well have been put on season ending IR in preseason. I really expected him to hit another level of play in his second year playing for DeMeco. A lost season for the most talented LB on the team.

Unfortunately, do we really have a spot for Christian Harris? I really like Azeez's energy & downhill play. Maybe a liability in coverage but I don't think Harris is enough of an upgrade to replace him. I don't know if I want to take To'o To'o off the field either, & I like having a healthy Pitre in the Nickle.

He's more than a depth piece. He's in a contract year... what to do, what to do?

Sounds like him and To’o To’o will be competing for LB2 in camp.

*In Ashley Shaffer voice*

Once brothers, now rivals. We will watch who shall reign supreme in camp this summer. Get your popcorn ready Texans fans! Whooo!

To'o To'o improved this year but a healthy Christian Harris is leaps and bounds a better player. Jimmie Ward is who I'd replace

Preseason, I was hoping that To'oTo'o would be the middle linebacker with Harris next to him. Of course, Ryan brought in Al shair from San francisco. I think anyone at middle linebacker in this system is going to rack up the tackles.

If he's healthy he easily takes Too Too's spot

I think we have 3 stud, young Lb's. Figure out which one has the best trade value and unload one. I have all the confidence in the world that Meco can take a late rounder and mold them into a solid backup/starter. We need offensive help and using one as a trade piece can help that side of the ball.
I wouldn't be against this, but the best they could get for Harris/Too Too is a 4th/5th rd pick IMHO and with Harris injury issues, trading a LB may not be a smart thing to do. Now if they wanted to trade Too Too for a proven starting LG (He probably would be on the last yr of his contract) I could get on board with this.

I just don’t think the market is high enough at LB to trade quality players on rookie contracts. And that’s assuming perfect health for the LB unit (which we did not get).

Lets look at Earnest Jones, who has accomplished more in the league than both Harris and To’o To’o:

Traded by Rams with a 6th for a 5th round pick.

Then at trade deadline, was traded by Titans for a player and 4th round pick.

The player and 4th round pick is decent, but i’d rather just have the proven player on his rookie contract than extra draft capital. And I don’t think a team would part with a starting caliber OL for one of them either.

Jones was on the last yr of his deal. Too Too isn't.

You might have to give up Too Too and a 4th for a starting level OL on the last yr of his contract.
