Texans New 2024 Defense

Calen Bullock took over the lion’s share of safety snaps last week from Eric Murray. Getting 84% of defensive snaps. With Ward out today, I expect we’ll see a starter work load from him once again.

Two rookies in the secondary, lets hope there aren’t any communication issues on the back end. But Bullock has a ton of upside. Lets hope he comes through!

Texans DT Tim Settle had the first two sacks of his Texans career last week at Minnesota.
We haven't talked about this guy at all. I honestly don't know him. I know sacks from the DT position aren't something you can bank on & there's really no stat to track consistency in collapsing the pocket, but is this something we can look forward to? Is Tim Settle a big ugly that can control the front of the pocket on a consistent basis?

Settle is a big guy that is athletic like Foley. Quality rotational DT but the two sacks is not something we should expect going forward. The DTs are benefiting from Hunter/Anderson being 1/2 in the league in QB pressures which is allowing them to clean up the mess the ends are creating in the pocket.

He's a really good player whose career has been sidetracked by injuries.

I can't remember these sacks specifically. But they could be a result of the QB stepping up due to pressure off the edge. I don't see double digit sacks from Settle.

Right, I'm not asking about the sack, I'm asking about collapsing the pocket, our DTs need to be shrinking the pocket giving QBs limited room to step up & out of pressure from the ends.

Definitely missing what Christian Harris and Denico Autry can bring. Not gonna lie, I haven't seen Al-Shaair make much of a difference and does make you wonder why didn't DeMeco pursue him last year before he signed with the Titans...I think it was leebigeztx who brought this up before about Al-Shaair.

I hope Harris and Autry can elevate the defense when they get back. Having them in the front 7 should give more pass rush options. And Harris is a dynamic sideline to sideline LB if he can stay healthy.

But the biggest issue in the secondary is miscommunication on the back end leading to wide open WRs. Maybe improving the pass rush with them will help? But that’s my biggest concern with the defense right now. It was an issue with Ward and it looks like it will remain an issue while Ward is out. Bullock will have growing pains, Murray is who he is.

Who's playing better than Al-Shaair week in week out on defense? He's easily one of the top 3 we've been putting out there this year.

I started watching him and not the group. The way everyone was raving about him coming here after playing in San Fran when DeMeco was there, I had expectations of him being a more of a playmaker. He had 2 of the best playing with him in San Fran so perhaps he will benefit when Harris returns.

It's why I wanted to keep Cashman AND bring in another like Azeez. Azeez is pretty good at everything a LB needs to do he's just not great at anything.

I was in this camp this offseason.

Said so at the time.

Grugier-Hill is also playing very well for the Vikes.

Texans currently ranked 17th in run defense.

2024 - Yards Allowed per Game:120.2 -- Home:126.3 -- Away:111.0
2023 - Yards Allowed per Game:101.5 -- Home:89.5 --- Away:114.8

And they decided to start their rookie QB vs the Texans. Could be a rough day for NE
Hopefully it's not like last season where they play great against a top QB and awful against a bad one.

Ridder and Zach Wilson having career games against us still stings.

Didn’t we play great against Caleb Williams?
No although sending guys brings the idea of pressure which can rush things.

It's all about figuring out what it is that gets him off his game.

That all said it's barely about Drake. The Pats have and will be trying to lean on their defense and run game. That's what we'll be having to actually gameplan against.

I disagree, our defense played darn great against Caleb Williams. They were number one in pressure after that game and we sacked dude 7 times. We hit and hit him often, forcing two interceptions. They did not let that rookie quarterback beat them like did a few times last season.

Yes that might be their game plan.

Drake Maye isn't Caleb Williams and the Bears aren't the Patriots.

Fact is you send a full tilt blitz against someone whose actually handing the ball off and has a decent run game and you better get them in the backfield or they're probably housing it. Blitzing is a lot easier when the team has no run game. Patriots will be running the ball and running it a lot.

It's two different teams and will need two different gameplans. Maybe blitzing works, but also maybe it doesn't. I'm not even sure if we played the Bears next week that the same gameplan would actually work anymore - I'm fairly certain it wouldn't.

We do not know what their offensive game plan will be. We can best believe they will throw the ball. And our job should be to get after the rookie quarterback no matter how many times he drop back to pass. You do know it they get behind early, like 21-0. They will not be running the ball as much.

It could very well work. You seem to want to be right for whatever reason.

Denico Autry should be back next week. That will help the pass rush more. Mario Edwards has been doing a great Autry impression during his absence. Can’t wait to see the DL with Autry added to the mix.

Kurt Hinish will be in the third week of his IR designated return practice window. But my question is where does he fit with a fully stocked DT room? I think they give it one more week as a glorified healthy scratch then he may just be an IR stash for the season if the DTs stay healthy through next game.

Then there’s Christian Harris… who knows when we’ll see him but it’ll be nice when that happens!

I'm pumped that Autry is coming back just in time for the Packers. Hopefully our front 4 in the 4-2-5 can make Jordan Love's life miserable. Hunter-Autry-Edwards-Anderson should be a scary front.

I just hope this doesn't continue to leave the middle of the field open for wide receivers to make the easy catch.

Patriots;

Passing attempts 33
Rushing attempts 26

Our defense brought the pressure, got 4 sacks and two turnovers.

New England went with a balanced attack. They did not go run heavy and they let the youngster sling the football around.

The Texans went with pretty much the same game plan from the Chicago game. They brought the heat, landed on some and got burnt on some.

They actually probably blitzed too much. Most of Maye's best plays came against the blitz and a lot of our best came with just our 4 man pressure.

Kind of illustrating my point that there's not just one single gameplan just because someone is a rookie.

I wouldn't even say they didn't want to run the ball but their defense didn't let them run the ball. It felt like we were up two scores minimum for the vast majority of the game. Those things are tied together.

I expect DeMeco will dial back the blitz against Jordan Love (and other good QBs), which will leave the LBs playing zone in the middle of the field. If you can successfully get pressure with just your front 4 you plug holes/seams in your pass-defense (ideally).

Well Edwards suspension opens up Autry’s roster spot. May even have room for Hinish in the rotation in the meantime.

My concern is the LB injuries. To’o To’o in concussion protocol and Azeez with knee injury. Christian Harris still not practicing.

Could have Hewitt/Hansen soaking up all the LB snaps when they had 1 snap between them on defense coming into yesterday’s game.

It's a good thing the Texans aren't facing the #2 rushing offense next Sunday. Oh, never mind.

If Al Shaair cant play the Texans defense is going to be in trouble.

Hansen, Hewitt, Hill, and Phillips wouldn’t be on the roster if they couldn’t play the game. Hopefully they play the game on Sunday like they want to earn a starting job.
