Diggs to Houston

This trade definitely opens up the draft in round 2 and 3, IMO. Those wanting a DT could get their wish after all... I think they have a couple LBs targeted in round 2. I will now be surprised if we don't move to grab a LB somewhere in round 2 or 3. Steel, how do you think this impacts the draft?
I don't think it will be a lb until maybe 4th because of big nickel packages

Not to be a downer, but I think this trade is also a 2025 hedge regarding Nico Collins. My guess is we plan to bring Diggs or Collins back in 2025- not both.
True, but they can pay Nico, just not what Ridley got overpaid. They still have 3 more years of cj rookie contract

This is what makes this deal so good.

Anybody got the trade chart value on this? I assume Nick smashed the value out of the park!

Diggs is a difference maker but he’s a diva. I’m a bit concerned he’ll be in the Woods role (albeit more productive). I could see him getting upset not getting the big play opportunities Tank/Nico should be getting. But at the end of the day I trust this organization now… I don’t think i’ve ever been as confident in the coaches/FO/QB in making things work!

Yeah, I think DeMeco is gonna have a problem with him. I’m not happy with this trade. It reeks with “dumping a troublemaker” if you ask me.

Esp. With Mixon too?

Combustible. Not what I want for a team with a young, impressionable QB and quite frankly, a team that is still learning.

Grading the Texans-Bills trade for Diggs

The odd thing about this deal is that situationally, the Bills sure need Diggs more than the Texans. Houston now has a plethora of riches at receiver, given that it already had an exceptional duo in Collins and Dell. They both ranked in the top 10 in overall score in ESPN's receiver tracking metrics last season.

Buffalo could not be in a more different place. After dealing Diggs (and letting Gabe Davis sign in Jacksonville), the team's top wide receivers are Curtis Samuel, Khalil Shakir and Mack Hollins. Sure, the offseason isn't done, and this year's draft includes an exceptional wide receiver class. But even if the Bills address receiver in the draft, they appear very likely to head into the 2024 season with a question mark at the position. Plus, it's worth noting that the draft capital that Buffalo acquired here is for next offseason.

Though Buffalo is turning over some of its roster, it's Super Bowl window is absolutely open. The Bills will take on a $31.096 million dead-money cap charge, but this is not overly important. That money is a sunk cost. The Bills will save almost $19 million in Diggs' salary and roster bonuses, though this is less than his market value.

This deal will ultimately hinge on which version of Diggs the Texans get going forward. He started the 2023 campaign on fire, with five 100-yard games over the first six weeks. But then he never had one again over the rest of the season. Diggs' yards per route run dropped from 2.8 in 2022 to 2.2 in 2023. And his advanced metrics took a dive: His receiver tracking metrics overall score -- which was between 72 and 91 every season from 2017-2022 -- dropped to 52. That his RTMs open score remained above average (69, a drop from 83 the prior year) mitigates a little of this concern, but any time a 29-year-old receiver has a dropoff in play, we have to consider the possibility that it is just him showing his decline.

The optimistic case for Buffalo? Perhaps it thought Diggs' play was falling off and decided to cash out now rather than wait a year and watch his trade stock drop further. But given Buffalo's team-building situation -- having arguably the second-best quarterback in the NFL without any dangerous wide receivers now -- it's possible the Bills just decided they wanted to move on.

The aforementioned areas of concern in Diggs' numbers and his age (he'll turn 31 in November) are why this is not necessarily a home run for Houston. There are real questions about what caliber of player Diggs is going forward, and the draft capital exchanged wasn't trivial -- though getting back two late-round picks takes a little sting out of it. Still, the Texans are firmly in their rookie-QB Super Bowl window and earn the right to pay Diggs below market value -- perhaps for multiple seasons -- so I certainly understand pushing their chips in. -- Walder

So, what’s the deal here? It looks like to me they were desperate to get rid of him. Look at the dead money they are carrying just to do the trade. Doesn’t make much sense to me. And that makes me a little suspicious.

He’s been a locker room problem his whole career. That’s the only reason I’m not ecstatic with this deal. I’m happy with it, just not ecstatic. We’ll see how it plays out.

Not sure that I agree with your assertion that Stroud is impressionable based on his demonstrated maturity and leadership in his rookie season on the field, on the sideline and in the locker room. If anything, I have seen him exert his will and mindset onto others.

Could Diggs or Mixon create some drama? There's a chance based on what history tells us. Is that going to derail Stroud? No.

There is a 100% chance that DeMeco talked to Diggs prior to this trade, asking if he'd want to be here and explaining how SWARM works, the overall culture, what's expected, etc. And Diggs signed off on it, or this trade wouldn't have gone down. Not saying the Diggs can't be a problem child if he isn't fed like he wants...but I don't think his diva act will work very well here. This is a good locker room with excellent young high character leaders. He'll fall in line, or he'll be gone fairly quickly...and no harm no foul in that case. DeMeco isn't going to tolerate a distraction for very long.

Was it before or after you were telling us this FA was an epic fail and Caserio was a bum?

This isn't FA my man. This is trades. He's made two excellent trades in Mixon and Diggs.

If you want to discuss the 2024 offseason more broadly, I'd still like a #2 corner and am not happy with the DT situation. BUT, adding in the two big trades, I am moving Nick's offseason from a B- to a B+. Good work so far overall.

Let's see what happens in the draft. They now have more flexibility so those two needs on D are likely to be addressed.
