Week 8 post game: Admit it, you knew it was going to turn out this way.

Slowik needs to let Stroud rip it.
Why do we think Slowick isn't allowing Stroud to be Stroud? We had no problem thinking he was letting him play before the interception. Now after the interception Slowick is reeling him in...

Doesn't make sense to me.
Stop forcing DP runs until we open the field up with passes.

To me this is related to the first issue. When it doesn't make sense to call a run play, or it gets too predictable, I'm not sold that it is exclusively on the OC. The QB makes the call at the line as he looks over the defense.

If anything I hope Slowick gets Cj better options when he doesn't like what he sees.

Hey we weren’t the only team who played down to a lesser team and loss. The mighty Chiefs lost to the Broncos.
It happens to the best the best of them.
The Texans have lost to a mediocre Falcons team and a bad Panthers team this year. The Texans themselves have been a bad football team since at least 2020, and I'd say it goes back to 2019 when the Chiefs showed the world who the Texans really were. The Texans franchise shouldn't be a comparison to the Chiefs in any way.

The Texans lost to a team they might be slightly better than. If Stroud had played like a typical rookie quarterback throughout the first part of this season, the Texans would probably be winless at this point. Maybe Steelb fooled you into thinking this is a team on the cusp but they're not. They're a lot more entertaining, by leaps and bounds than last year. IMO, they're headed in the right direction. But talent wise, they're not a threat to any team and them losing to any team shouldn't surprise anyone.

The Texans had a horrible game. It happens. Can they rebound next week? Slowik needs to let Stroud rip it. Stop forcing DP runs until we open the field up with passes. Defense falters late yet again. That is two games Stroud took the lead with little time left only to have the defense fail to get a stop. Games are tight in the NFL. Someone needs to make a play.

100% We need to unleash the Texans! If they can run, great! If not, let CJ sling it! I saw multiple occasions he had WRs open and for the play option 1 was open also. Let him decide if the open 30yrds or 5 is a better pass.

Too many times we are trying to run DP with no running lanes. Stroud will get into a rhythm and then we try to force the run. Disrupts the flow of the game. I think Slowik is a true Shanahan guy and wants to establish the run early and often, and like Mike and Gary, even when it isn't working they stick with it. Instead of letting the game unfold naturally, they keep forcing their plan over and over. This was a bad game. I expect it to be better next week.

In theory, I like the idea. But if we take the run game out ourselves & become one dimensional from the get go, our OL may not look as good as it has been & pressure is going to get to Cj more often.

Again... I don't know who is calling what. But if you & I can see the run is too predictable, I'm going to assume the OC can see the same thing.

It's happening, I'm not denying it. I don't think we understand why.

All teams want to establish the run, no secret there. The Texans are especially bad at it but only 10th worst in the league at 91.9 ypg
They are 3rd worst at 3.3 ypc

Running back is climbing my list and may end up as our biggest off-season need. Boone actually is the best RB in this scheme. They are just too stubborn to admit it. DP should be taking Boone’s role, and Boone should take DP’s role. Devin can stay right in the middle as he is now. DP sucks in this offense and I’d say he is slightly better then where he was…but it’s not good enough. He should be traded or moved to #3.

been saying this for a minute now. Pierce doesn't have the vision or quickness to play in this offense. Robert Smith mentioned something about this during the broadcast as well...something about Pierce being "frustrated" that he hasn't been able to pick up the running scheme as fast as he would like...For Smith to say that tells me it was likely something Smith probably asked Pierce about in a pre-game meeting or during warm-ups..Just struck me as odd he'd mention that when we've heard nothing of the sort all season about it from anyone.

I'm not arguing with either of you.

But it would be nice if someone would break down run plays the way O'Sullivan does QBs.

I don't know if the OL is making run lanes. Sometimes I think I see a lane, but they close up kinda fast. Hard to tell. Previous weeks it looked like Singletary was consistently finding lanes. Yesterday, not so much.

Yeah, he's getting way too many snaps in passing situations. They're basically taking a explosive player off the field when Beck is out there. They already have a lack of explosive players, but now you're making it worse.
That fluke kick return for a TD fooled Slowik into thinking he has a gadget weapon in Beck when reality says otherwise.

I’m not even going to lie, I thought we would not only win against the Panthers but believed we would thrash them. Boy was I wrong, lol. This team should feel ashamed after taking an L against an 0-6 team. I guess we’re back to being the joke of the AFC South. Everyone can STFU about winning the division now.

What? We're still in 2nd place. Two weeks in a row. Couldn't have said that for the last three or four years. LOL

Jarrett Patterson has a broken ankle ! They're not sure if he'll br ready by the end of the year. I wish we would do a deal with the Browns for Luke Wypler .... he's ranked 3rd string .... should not be cost-prohibitive .... he was bright, strong, and quick ! At least try him out !

The Texans were winning the TOP up until that last drive.
No excuse for the D.

That drive was on the coaching decision.
They pulled the DBs back into Cover 3 or Cover 4, making it simple and easy for Young.

Those were some of the most stupid Defensive play calling I've ever seen.
They gave the game away to the Panthers.
They play cover 3 all game anyway

DeMeco straight up says the problem was lack of preparation by his young and overconfident team:
“We've got to learn how to handle success," Ryans said. "We have a young team. We're growing. As we continue to grow, we have to learn ... how to work after a win. We can't get too up in this league,” he added. "We have to remain consistent and put in the same work that [we do] when we've lost a game every single week."

‘We Have to Learn How to Handle Success!’ Texans Coach DeMeco Ryans Calls Out Team Preparation

And I don't think he's deferring blame since the defense did their job by holding the opponent to 15 points.

With the 1st batted down pass of CJ, I had a bad feeling. When it got to 2, I was praying that the running game would start working. I even told my wife that if they are going to be able to bat passes at the line either CJ needs to somehow start throwing upwards more in a hurry or we need to be running the ball and tire out the defense. If we can't, then they will have a decent chance to get a win.

IMO what cost us, great goal line stuff for our defense on the FG drive. Was our inability to get the Panthers off the feild on 3rd down. Young was average for the whole game. But, the run game pulled them out of 3rd and 5 type situations too often. We need a DT or 2 to really clog up any run lanes in situations like that. And with Stingley out, we needed better tackling from the DBs. Better yet, Young threw about 3 INT passes that the DB or LB just couldn't get. Had we picked of the pass when the WR had it bounce out of his hands late in the game, and we had 2 players right there, we could have just played run the ball and maybe got a FG or TD. Either way even if we didn't, we would have won the game. They would have had say 1min to even try to get yards. Instead we didn't get the pick and then penalty after penalty got them in FG range. And Perryman being off side 3 times, on 2 got called cost us the game.

Bottom line is our secondary played decent until the 3rd. And then, it showed we need to both get a DT to clog some running lanes and another CB or 2 that are better than what we have. That would likely have been a difference maker. I think the loss falls on the back end of the D near the end of the game. I only mention a DT because more pressure would have also caused Young to likely not scramble right and hit Thesin(SP) to prolong the drive. We got pressure but it was more from the middle of the line not the edges. A DT taking up the middle more would have allowed our DE's and LBs to flow to Young to in theory stop his rollout or sack him outside the pocket.
The middle pressure wasn't the problem, it's when guys rush past the qb and create throwing lanes. A guy like Young, you rush him like you would LJ or Allen. Get upfield 2 yds then flatten out.

Howard should be at RT. They're using Beck to help Fant which takes a wr out of the play. Howard can handle his business out there and whomever plays guard can get the help. It's a waste of resources because the gap from Howard to Fant is wider than whomever plays guard.

This.

The running could greatly improve if Patterson (or Scruggs) could move to LG when Scruggs comes back. Now who knows when Howard will be back at his natural position.

Would love to find another Arian Foster.

Yep then Pierce has a good run and Texans give him 5 more plays hoping for same.
If it's broken don't fix it.

Pierce thinks he sees a lane but...

I don't recall seeing Beck line up as anything other than a running back so if not on the field, is the backfill empty of a blocker? Also on the fumble, i i r c Beck did catch the ball he just did not cover it up to protect it and chose to use his left for a forearm which did not keep the ball from being knocked from his grasp.

I dont want Howard playing LG. Put Jones at LG and he can do as good of a job as Howard did. I think the issue with Howard is he just isn't smart enough to pick up the new scheme at LG. This shouldn't be as big of an issue for him at RT.

Did you see that there were a couple of plays where Howard was supposed to be pulling out to the left on a run play to block Burns? He looked like he didn't know what he was supposed to do. It made the play look like they left Burns unblocked intentionally.

Also I dont think the gap between Howard and Fant is all that great. Is Kendrick Lewis eligible to come off of the IR? I also dont think it would be a bad idea to give Broeker a shot at LG. He couldn't be much worse than Howard was yesterday.

Wait till we trash the Tampa Bay Buccaneers next Sunday.

Nah Scruggs will be back..
Like the robot.

that fumble was from him being split out as a WR wasn’t it? He was split out as a WR at least 2 other tines that I recall as well.

Sorry I was speaking about other than that fumble play and you inform me he was lined up outside twice besides that. I did not recall seeing those. Thanks.
