DW4 Traded to Cleveland

To be clear, none of them blame Watson for making sure he was 100 percent healthy before taking the field. No one wants a repeat situation from 2021 when Baker Mayfield continued to play with a torn shoulder labrum that clearly hindered his throwing motion.

Instead, they were less than thrilled that Watson spent the week assuring everyone he would play — before opting out at the 11th hour despite being medically cleared.

Could this be a problem long-term for Deshaun Watson and the Browns?
Anytime there are rumors of friction in a locker room, there's potential for things to go in the wrong direction. Cleveland unfortunately knows this as well as any team in the league. That's why it's fair to ask if this problem could persist throughout the season.

The answer to that is — it depends.

Whether or not this issue festers and causes a problem down the road will depend solely on how the team plays going forward. It's cliché but it's true that winning cures everything. So if the Browns can start to reel off some wins, no one will remember a Week 4 loss — no matter how ugly.

If they don't start winning...it could be another long season and several issues might be exaggerated.

And yet before the Browns Titans game DW4 and Nuk are seen pre-game dapping and hugging each other like bros.

Watson has done nothing but play and took the blame and criticism about his play when it was appropriate. Stefanski on the other hand is holding press conferences trying to low key blame his hurt qb b/c his team just got pile-driven by a division rival where his offense looked overmatched and his back up qb looked like a deer in headlights.

He’s reaching & trying to deflect blame from himself b/c he’s feeling the pressure.

As the supposed leader of the team, that’s weak on his part and the same **** BoB used to do when he was here..blaming Easterby/Cal for moves HE ultimately wanted/made or at a minimum supported when they went south.

I'm referring to @leebigeztx 's allegations of Kenyon Green's transgressions. What are they?
I read it as him using Kenyon Green as an example if you read the entire comment:

My uncle did the same with nfl and mlb players, I'm not disputing that, but as we've witnessed a guy failing a physical at one place, but passes at another. The doctors are to get you on the field, doesn't mean you're at optimal performance. Look at Kenyon Green as an example.
The conversation was about Watson's toughness vs willingness to play and that's where the rest of the comment came into play

To me, his transgressions deserve to be ridiculed and mocked. All the negative press he gets, he deserves. I will never question his willingness and want to play or his toughness. He was sacked alot here, beat up, busted lung, and whatever else.
The entire chain of conversation has to be read to make sense of it all. That's how I read it anyway. Not saying I agree

That's probably true. Mixing in the actual name rather than constantly opting for pronouns would help. Or a paragraph break. The last name used was Kenyon Green. Then @leebigeztx went for pronouns. Which I read as, "Look at Kenyon Green as an example. To me, his (Kenyon Green's) transgressions deserve to be ridiculed and mocked. All the negative press he (Green) gets, he (Green) deserves." The pronoun should reflect the last proper name used.

I will say that since being paid by the Texans in 2020, Watson has been surrounded by drama. Most of it his own making. It's difficult to give Watson the benefit of the doubt when he's constantly at the center of the controversy and doesn't address it head on. The latest issue involving not suiting up is another example of Watson not taking on the matter directly. No accountability. That will never go well.

Controversy is gonna follow him throughout the rest of his career b/c of what happened here. Deserved? Probably. The only things he can do to limit and/or quiet down that controversy is to win, retire, or for some folks unfortunately who will NEVER move past what he was accused of…die…This is just the world we live in today.

the only realistic option based on the likelihood to happen is that he struggles to lead the factory of sadness franchise that is the Browns to any meaningful winning and then he fades off into oblivion & retires.

How can anybody be shocked by this?

The Browns just need to let Watson get his own private treatment and he will be fine. I’m sure all he needs is some massages to work his muscles in the right position. You know his natural throwing stance in Houston was the bow legged corn stance. He hasn’t looked right since going to Cleveland.

Mystery surrounding Deshaun Watson’s shoulder brings back bad feelings of Browns QB instability: Jimmy Watkins

BEREA, Ohio -- The circus is back in town, and nobody paid for a ticket.

In fact, the Browns agreed to pay Deshaun Watson $230 million guaranteed in hopes that he would quell their franchise’s history of theatrics in the quarterback room. But on Wednesday in Berea, Cleveland’s situation under center once again felt familiar, which in Cleveland means uncertain.

The Browns either can’t pinpoint or aren’t disclosing the status of the bruised throwing shoulder that caused Watson to miss practice again Wednesday. Their official statement is “day-to-day,” which could mean week to week or hour to hour, for all we know. Cleveland isn’t easing the fanbase’s worries with its vague public statements.

“Any injury -- I don’t care if it’s ankle, knee -- you have to be able to do your job,” coach Kevin Stefanski said when asked what’s keeping Watson out of practice. “You have to be able to function and do all the things that are asked of you to play your position. That’s really what it is, making sure that he continues to rehab and get to a place where he’s able to do his job at a high level.”

“Function” is this week’s buzzword. Stefanski was once “hopeful” that Watson would start against the Ravens in Week 5. And when Watson didn’t, Stefanski said after the 28-3 loss that he expected Watson would be ready to play against the 49ers after the bye week.

Now the Browns need Watson healthy enough to “function,” and nobody in Berea seems sure when that might happen. Rookie Dorian-Thompson Robinson told a scrum of reporters Wednesday that “I know as much as you guys do,” about Cleveland’s quarterback depth chart. He also said he didn’t know he was starting against the Ravens until that Sunday morning, and it’s more than fair to wonder if that surprise contributed to his three-interception performance during the loss.

About an hour after Thompson-Robinson’s interview, Stefanski revealed that the fifth-round pick had been demoted behind new backup quarterback P.J. Walker, who signed with the Browns on Aug. 30 and, at the moment, resides on Cleveland’s practice squad. He joined the Browns after being cut by a Chicago Bears team that rosters Nathan Peterman and rookie Tyson Bagent (from Division II Shepherd University) behind quarterback Justin Fields.

The Browns prefer the 27-year-old Walker because of his experience, which includes 15 games and seven starts in three seasons with the Carolina Panthers. He’s 4-3 in those starts with four touchdowns and five interceptions. He’s completed 63.8% of his passes and averaged 6.7 yards per attempt (which would rank 23rd in 2023). Now he might play against the NFL’s third-best defense this weekend.

Might. Maybe. Could. The Browns can’t (or won’t) say for sure who their quarterback will be this weekend. They can’t (or won’t) say when Watson will be back. And the mystery surrounding his expensive shoulder reminds Browns fans of the quarterback woes they’d prefer to forget.

Cleveland has been waiting since 1999 for a quarterback like Watson. The city waited 11 more weeks last season to finally see him play. And it waited another nine games — until Week 3 against the Titans this season — to see him play to his potential for the first time.

Now Cleveland fans are waiting again, Watson is losing the momentum he built against Tennessee, and we have little insight as to why.

The Browns can’t control injuries, but they can control how they manage and discuss them. And on that front, Cleveland didn’t know Watson wasn’t playing against the Ravens until he arrived at the stadium. It still doesn’t know (or isn’t saying) when he’ll play next, and it is floundering for a backup plan behind him.

That’s why, six weeks into a promising season, Browns headquarters already feels chaotic. Maybe Watson will be fine, and maybe the Browns are wise to slow-play his return. But right now, we can’t be sure. And as Cleveland knows well, there is no worse NFL affliction than quarterback uncertainty.

Cleveland waited two decades, then 11 weeks, then nine ga

What’s Wrong With Deshaun Watson Now? Cleveland Browns Mystery
The Cleveland Browns seem to have themselves a Deshaun Watson Problem.

The Cleveland Browns traded with the Houston Texans for quarterback Deshaun Watson with the intention of him fixing the franchise's quarterback problem.
And so far, that has not exactly been the case.

Through the first nine games of his tenure with the Browns, Watson is just 5-4 as a starter and has thrown 11 touchdowns to seven interceptions, with a QBR of just 82.4.
Not exactly what you want from a guy making $230 million fully guaranteed.

But even more odd, is that Watson has been completely absent from the Browns lineup since Week 4, with the team citing a 'bruised shoulder' as the reason for his absence.
Officially, Watson is listed as day-to-day, but as it stands, it appears that he won't make the start in Week 6 for the Browns matchup against the undefeated 49ers on Sunday.
To make things even stranger? Cleveland head coach Kevin Stefanski was extremely vague about Watson's status with the media this week.

“Any injury, I don’t care if it’s ankle, knee ... you have to be able to do your job,” Stefanski said. “You have to be able to function and do all the things that are asked of you to play your position. That’s really what it is, making sure that he continues to rehab and get to a place where he’s able to do his job at a high level.”

And even after a bye week, things are just as mysterious.

Even rookie QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who started in Watson's place in Week 4, has no idea what the status of Watson is going forward.

“I know as much as you guys do," Thompson-Robinson said. "We all try to work to be the starter every day, including Deshaun with his rehab and everything like that.”

The Browns have elevated veteran P.J. Walker to the backup role, seemingly with the intention of starting him against San Fransico on Sunday.

In other words, this will make three consecutive weeks that Watson is sidelined in practice and games, with no clear timeline on his return.

Mysterious indeed.

NFL policy states that it is the responsibility of the team to see that the HC, starting QB and any requested entities make themselves available for interview. Guess the League has found another way to give Watson an out.

In stress situations, Watson doesn't seem to do so well without Rusty furnishing him with a script

Well, he did go to Clemson.

Question…..could Watson become the biggest “Gift Giver” in Texans history?

So far, the gift basket has included enough draft capital for the team to build up a nice core of young talent. Any chance he could throw a cherry on top by gifting them the services of WR, Marvin Harrison Jr as well?

Rotator cuff contusions are not really all that predictable. Gentle ROM (not throwing) rather than total rest actually helps avoid shoulder freezing. But activities that cause further trauma or bleeding into the tissues should be avoided. Healing for an overhead athlete can be anywhere from several days to several weeks. The injury causes significant pain and stiffness. Ice, steroid injections and anti-inflammatories can be used to treat it. Too early return to throwing or another hit the shoulder is likely to cause further damage. As an aside, if the original or a secondary hit is hard enough, it can cause small tears in the cuff, and can prolong the healing even more. If Watson were smart (and that's an oxymoron), he won't be out there Sunday.

One thing to understand regarding the Injury Reports...........for those that "Do Not Practice/Participate [DNP]" does not mean that they have not "practiced" on their own. From what I have found out, Watson, during the early period that rest and ROM only is needed for a rotator cuff contusion to heal, continued to throw under the supervision of his "private QB coach" Quincy Avery. With too early return to the stress of throwing, a rotator cuff contusion can definitely bleed into the rotator cuff and/or cause small tears, something that apparently occurred.

Watson et al should have followed the standard protocol for such an injury as now even reported by Mary Mary.............

Report: Deshaun Watson could miss multiple more games with rotator cuff contusion
By Charean Williams

Published October 13, 2023 06:06

Deshaun Watson will miss a second consecutive game — and third week — with a shoulder injury, and he could miss multiple more games.

Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com reports that the Browns quarterback was diagnosed with a right rotator cuff contusion. She adds that “it’s a deep contusion that presents or functions more like a strain.”

Watson, who injured his shoulder in the third quarter of the Sept. 24 game against the Titans, will not return to the field until he can throw normally and without pain.

Team doctors medically cleared him Oct. 1 with his shoulder structurally intact. The protocol now calls for rest and rehab with minimal throwing, according to Cabot.

Kevin Stefanski said Friday that Watson did some light throwing this week, but the coach offered no prognosis beyond this week.

The Browns initially believed the injury to be a bruise, which would have gotten him back in the lineup quickly. But when Watson tested his shoulder in a pregame warmup before the Week 4 game, he experienced significant pain and weakness in the arm.

The team now is taking a conservative approach in Watson’s return.

The Browns have not gotten their money’s worth from Watson yet. They traded three first-round draft picks to acquire him from Houston and then fully guaranteed a $230 million contract. He missed 11 games last season while suspended and has played only nine games in his career with the team.

Watson sat out the entire 2021 season, with the Texans making him a healthy scratch every
week.
