Preseason: Texans vs Dolphins

Well last post today. Guys, we got curb stomped out there. That was total domination. Miami looks great. Kudos to them.

Miami looked like the Harlem Globetrotters, and the Texans looked like the Washington Generals. This team is flat out bad at this point and needs a ton of work to get to sea level. I’m not even sure they will win 5 at this point without some major improvements on both sides of the ball. I still believe in Demeco longer term, but for the optimists out there - no sharp objects on Sunday afternoons.

Dm me with a recommendation for an eye doctor.

Good stuff today. Thanks.

DeMeco Ryans on CJ Stroud. “Overall, just with the operation of the offense about CJ was more efficient. He felt more comfortable. Everyone around him played better, which allowed him to play better. Proud of the progress that CJ took this week.”

DeMeco Ryans said Tank Dell felt a little tightness pregame. They thought it was best to sit him. But Ryans says Dell will be fine.

DeMeco Ryans on QB1: "You'll see the starter when we get to Baltimore."

CJ Stroud says it all about “making everyone better ..and I'm taking steps every week so I'm really excited for the future man and actually appreciate the mistakes and the lessons learned.”

CJ Stroud says he think he’s can be a really good player in this league but adds he has to become consistent. “I’ve show flashes of that, but it doesn't matter if you don’t do things consistently. Everybody can do it one time.”

Well, I see the board members are in mid-season form after the second preseason game. That's impressive. :corrosion:

Lol

I just finished watching the game right now and after reading the board beforehand I expected a dumpster fire!

1rst quarter D was awesome! Big plays fast playing!

Stroud looked good, especially when doing quick tempo plays, snap the ball and fire.

First time in I can’t count how many years this team is going to be fun to watch!

OK, looking at just the offense, first half, I'm just a little bit, just a smidge, more positive. The first series was a disaster. No question. But the second series was better, but our run game is pathetic. The first quarter ended with us still having the ball on our second possession. We kick our 3 points at the top of the second quarter. The third possession was three and out, with a penalty forth play, with Stroud throwing the ball short of the first down. Our forth possession the two minutes to end the half. We didn't do anything and it was three and out with two incompletions and one pathetic attempt at a run.

It wasn't good but it wasn't the disaster which I first thought. Except for the run game. What I saw could be fixed and/or improved.

Something to consider, these dropped passes were in the second half.

My observations from this game:

The offense worked fairly well when CJ was in, with, of course, the noticeable exception they didn't score. The offense looked pretty bad in the 2nd half.

The defense flashed when the starters were in, but couldn't stop anybody from scoring. Again, the 2nd half was even worse.

Which means our starters might actually be somewhat competitive this season, but our bench help doesn't look very good. I'm still not seeing enough to get us to 8 wins this season.

Moore dropped 2 3rd down catchable balls from CJ.
You'll have to help me out here. I don't recognize the name and checked the roster. I don't find a Moore on the roster. You have a number? I'll have to go back and look. I remember one well thrown ball that the db got his hand around in front to knock it away on a very good defensive play, but don't recall any drops. I'll have to go back and look, later.

3 points of offenses. Offenses and QBs are not only judged by passes completed...........they are judged by the points they've put on the scoreboard
And who exactly are you judging by points on the scoreboard? The kid playing his 2nd ever preseason game, or the 3rd year guy who scored zero against backups and has averaged 15 PPG in his 28 NFL starts?

Did Stroud look better today than he did in his first 11 snaps last week? Yes he did. He's not quite an All Pro on his way to Canton yet though. That's probably going to take at least 3 preseason games. Maybe a few more.

All we can do is hope he keeps improving each week, while also realizing there's going to be setbacks along the way. Let the process play out.

Nice write up on the Texans from the NFL page.

After a rough preseason debut, Stroud was a different quarterback Saturday. The No. 2 overall pick shook off the first-game jitters and mistakes made in New England, showing off his greatest strength -- his accuracy -- on an 11-play drive that appeared destined to finish in the end zone before Houston stalled inside the red zone. That result doesn't matter too much. What's more important is how Stroud handled the speed of the game, delivering fantastic strikes to Robert Woods, Nico Collins, Dalton Schultz and Noah Brown in his two quarters of work. Stroud's throws all looked a little different, coming at varying depths and even including one completed while rolling out. Almost all of them were equally impressive, much like his Ohio State highlight tape suggested he'd perform. The reasons Houston drafted him were evident in his play Saturday; now, they just need to work on finishing drives.

Ok, went back and looked at all the plays. The receiver was Brown. One of the plays I described above where the db made the excellant play...this was the second possession. The other play I'll give you, if I argued with 76Texan about a couple of those second half drops. Again it was Brown. He was on the turf and the ball down low but hit him in the hands just above the ground. He could have made the catch. This was the forth possession.

I only watched the 1st half and what I saw was a better coached, more talented team... which is what we should have expected.

Hopefully the Texans will look like the Dolphins after a year with Demeco.
How do we know if it's the coaching or the talent?
Or maybe both?

A ball thrown low that still hits both hands are supposed to be caught.
That's definitely one of those by textbook definition "if it hits both of your hands, you have got to catch it".
It's also a safe throw since the receiver is the only one that can get to it.

A ball that was placed on the wrong shoulder like the one Mills threw is always an invitation for an Int.
I can tell you I've seen many of those.
There are terms like "leads the receiver", and "throwing a guy open".
Like I said, it's not a easy throw, but it’s an inaccurate throw nonetheless.

Passes that are deemed catchable, but dropped by the receiver is scored as a drop.

Last year, the Texans receiving Corp was among those with the fewest drops (tied at 7).

I can guarantee that I had watched a lot of replays to match up the drops to the receivers.

I don't spend as much time as I used to, but I know I can tell which is which.
An inaccurate pass or a drop.

I don't have to discuss Mills; he's going to be a career backup anyway.
I was just telling you that I see a QB that is not (highly) accurate.
It was one of the reasons I didn't think he has the make up to be a successful starter in the NFL.

And my take on draft prospect at the QB position has been quite good for 16 years (not counting this year yet); I'd like to think I know what I'm looking at.

There's a difference.
I always had videos or photos to back up my claim.

Stellb only has his words.
He uses wrong stats and stuffs often that I had refuted clearly.
LoL, what I say you may disagree with and I embrace that. But if I have strong opinions, I don't need to suck the PFF tit to develop my opinions. Sorry I don't put up pretty pics or a spreadsheet for everybody to see. I'm sure if I did that would get you a little twingy down south of the equator.
