Texans Running Backs

The most successful one that comes to mind is Terrell Davis. Pick 196 (6th round), MVP, HOF. He was on the verge of not making the Broncos roster his rookie season until a spectacular tackle on special teams in a preseason game got him noticed - and the rest is history.
They also had Mike Anderson who ran for 1500 undrafted. The dude who was running behind RG3 ran for like 1200 he was a 6th or undrafted. Portis was a 2nd rd pick, but aside from him, they were late rd picks. Pierce and Singletary as a duo is probably the best position group on the Texans. I guess we can debate oline. They will be able to run the ball for about 140 a game as long as the defense can be middle if the pack, imo.

Wow I love his game!

Ok, I'm altering my 8-win prediction for Houston to 10 wins and a trip to the playoffs!

His vision behind the line is fantastic. And his decision making is very quick. He knows what hole he wants to hit almost immediately after getting the ball and then his first step is very decisive.
He's exactly the kind of running back that inspires a phrase most of us have come to hate.
You'll hear it during preseason games from color "analyst" Spencer Tillman, "smoke through a key hole".

Dameon Pierce studying CMC.

Dameon Pierce made himself a well-known commodity amid a stellar rookie season in 2022, and the Texans running back is expecting a productive follow-up by virtue of Houston's rookie offensive coordinator in 2023.
Bobby Slowik was brought along by new Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans from San Francisco, where he was heavily involved in Kyle Shanahan's highly efficient offensive scheme the past few years.

Pierce, who described Slowik's offense as "running back friendly" at OTAs, has been studying 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey in preparation for being utilized more frequently through the air.

"Oh, the more ways I can get the ball, the better, baby. I love that. I love that," Pierce said Tuesday. "But, I've got a lot of great guys to look at. Most recently, probably Christian McCaffrey. He thrived last year in the league, in his offense he's just getting out of the backfield, getting in the flat, catching hitches or whatever the case may be. There's multiple ways to get a running back the ball."

I dont really understand the Valladay hate, he seems like a stud to me. Guys get missed all the time. I am just happy people slept on Pierce last year. Read this earlier and got me excited. I never knew the PFF stuff with Pierce mentioned here.

"Amongst those elite running backs, Pierce ranked fifth in average yards after contact at 3.28 yards. He also forced a whopping 62 missed tackles, good for fourth, despite playing five fewer games than the next guy."

Valladay hate? For an udfa that hasn't done a thing in the NFL? Has anyone hated on him?

I was going to say… I haven’t seen “hate” on him anywhere other than just being an under the radar UDFA. He was Chad Reuter’s top UDFA RB for what it’s worth:

Saw this about Zeke.. saw someone have an opposing article, but this one got me excited for the possibility. He states that if the price is right it would make sense and I agree.

"This past season while in the red zone, Elliott gained 130 yards on the ground, 12 catches, and 14 total touchdowns. While the Cowboys have been lauded for having a balanced offense with an above-average offensive line, Elliott has been behind their top red zone efficiency."

Texans running backs coach Danny Barrett said Dameon Pierce has improved his pass blocking this offseason.
That's good. Though I'm not sure how he knows this prior to putting pads on.

I want to hear a coach say a guy has underperformed in OTA"s. That will be a 1st.

As an Ohio State fan I can tell you that every year, without exception, we get reports out of fall camp that this kid and that kid are looking like the next Jack Lambert or Ronnie Lott and then the season starts and they don't look anything like those guys. I suspect the same is true for the pros. Everyone is driking the Kool-Aid in the summer!

Yea, I wanna hear "I'm really disappointed in the effort being put forth by the team. It's like these guys don't want to be here. Their minds are somewhere else. Nobody can block. Our receivers couldn't catch a cold in a flu epidemic. Our quarterback can't hit a bus from 20 yards. Our secondary guys are always lost. It's going to be a LONG season. I'll probably be fired mid-season."

Texans RB Dameon Pierce focusing on ‘little things’ to produce big results

Doesn't matter who’s at RB if we don’t get the OL fixed. I love Pierces effort but still don’t know how he will fit this scheme. Hard to judge him from last year with that joke of a line. Now with a new scheme, 2 OTs that are wussies in the run game, a rookie C and a LG that is confirming he doesn’t belong in the NFL daily I’m not sure what to expect. Peirces running style combined with this OL makes me believe he won’t make it through the season without destroying his body. We’ll be lucky to get 9 games out of him.

i think Singletary will end up having a bigger year only because he is more elusive and better as a receiver. I don’t expect much at all from this offense. This is exactly why I didn’t want to draft a QB this year.

This line may be somewhat overpaid and over drafted. But it is not the pile of crap you're expecting. Pierce will get his.

I dont get it...we let valladay go, but we keep ogunbawale (ifumblefootball), and dokes??? and now sign rountree??? DP, DS, and boone I understand and can get behind...but the others...especially over a young work horse like valladay??? Head scratcher to me...

TEAMS as in Special teams. Only the first 3 guys get any PT on ofense. If there's a 4th guy, he has to be a jack of all trades type that is also a ST ace.

I'm not a huge fan of Ogunbawale (sp?) but he did contribute often on ST last year. The 4th guy will only see time on offense if there are injuries.

I suspect that Valladay didn't show ST ability, and he probably can't be hidden on the practice squad, so they did him a solid and released him.

The only guys getting carries is Pierce, Devon, and Mike Boone. Anyone else that sticks has to be a ST ace.

I guess but if he tears it up for the steelers im gonna be pisssssed

Was Valladay's bonus contingent on making the team or was it a pure signing bonus?

I thought he had a chance at cracking the rotation. I guess the coaching staff was less than impressed. Wondering if it was his effort, skill or attitude.

Texans backs 8.24.2024, I think they keep 5 combined. Barring any trades, bolded are who I think they keep (on the 53) and comments on what I would do.

Running backs
Joe Mixon - 6' 1", 220 lbs...no brainer
Dameon Pierce - 5' 10", 215 lbs...I'd probably be looking at a RB from another roster or cuts
Dare Ogunbowale - 5' 10", 205 lbs...keeping Brooks instead
Cam Akers - 5' 10", 217 lbs...he's earned a roster spot
British Brooks - 5' 11", 225 lbs...Brooks over Dare, Brooks was a special teams standout in college
Jawhar Jordan - 5' 10", 186 lbs...maybe practice squad
J.J.Taylor - 5' 6", 185 lbs...release

Fullbacks
Andrew Beck - 6' 3", 255 lbs...Beck provides more versatility in personnel groups but he can't block
Troy Hairston - 5' 11", 245 lbs...practice squad, he's struggled in camp/preseason

Edited for Cam Akers height and adding (on the 53)

Mixon/Akers/Pearce

Brooks

I would keep Jordan ove Pearce. Akers should definitely be RB2.

Jordan’s physical build is different from the other backs I peg them for keeping. I wonder if he was drafted (rd 6) for his potential as a return specialist or as a change-of-pace option. Also I don't see any backs on the team with homerun speed, but not having a back with blazing speed doesn’t necessarily mean they can’t score long touchdowns so not a concern but more of an observation. Going to be interesting to see what the running back room looks like after cut down day right up to week 1.
