Do they gradually work CJ in or does he start the opener?

I like the two receivers drafted and perhaps a free agent signee such as Noah Brown can contribute.
I like the rookies, too. But it usually takes time for rookie WRs. They should get better as the season goes along.

Noah Brown? Now your Buckeye Homer is showing.

It's always interesting to me when you look at the three best QB's of all time.

Brady
Mahomes
Rodgers

Literally all of them sat for at least a year.

I mean.......its kind of hard to argue with.

CJ is going to be win the job though, because Dougie Mills just isn't that good.

And by the way... random, but was Tim Kelley actually good? He had Mills looking like a decent QB at time. Just feels like Pep was terrible.
They sat out a year why? Because they had really good quarterbacks starting in front of them. Every team doesn’t have that luxury at all.

Another thing Rodgers IMO is not an all time great either.

He got his chances last season and he actually played solid for the Cowturds. Before then he couldn’t get on the field because of the talent in front of him.

He was always injured at Ohio State but was immensely popular with his teammates. I'm shocked that he's been able to play in the league for so long.

Now that I think about it, how much will he play in the preseason?

I don't think much of the preseason program. Might not be a bad idea to postpone his first start if the team isn't where they want them to be. I mean if we're going to ZBS we know it takes a while to get it right.

If they schedule some scrimmages this year, I'll take that over a bunch of PS game snaps, though I do believe he'll need to see more than typical starters would see. If there aren't any scrimmages then he's going to need to see significant PS snaps IMO.

Tank creates his separation with Quick starts and stops and changes of direction, once he has that separation 4.49 will keep him away for the defender long enough.
Yeah, that's the hope but WRs and QBs need time to develop and chemistry too. I wished we had one solid vet to lead these guys but perhaps a rookie will.

Robert Woods is a pretty solid vet

Absolutely he is.

Former 2nd round pick going into his 11th year in the league. 130 games as a starter. This will be his 4th locker room, including last season with a division rival. Experience with 4 different coaching staffs.

Over 600 career catches with 3 seasons of at least 85 catches. 3 seasons with at least 900 yards, including 2 over 1,000.

Super Bowl champion.

I'm not suggesting all-pro caliber play, but he's damn sure a solid vet, and one the youngsters in the WR room can watch and learn from.

He had growing pains because sitting doesnt make you better playing does.
Like I had said many times, Mahomes only played one game his rookie year; a meaningless game to end the regular season.
Does that mean all rookie QB should follow that blueprint?

Did Mahomes have a competent QB in front of him?

He was solid on a good team. It’s a reason he’s on the Texans now. Past few years he hasn’t been the same player. Always loved his speed. Im sure at 31 it’s not the same.

I think we’re lucky Cj fell into our laps. It’s awesome reports coming out of Bryce Young showing up an hour early before Carolina practice which shows he’s dedicated but he looks like a middle schooler. I can honestly say, just watching a few videos of Cj, he’s very competitive and has a love for the game that most players don’t. Overall you have a rookie Hc, qb and oc. The odds are stacked against him and you don’t have players like #4 who come out the draft every year and beat those odds. Im rooting for Demeco, I thought it was silly to hire a 1st time oc with a rookie qb and hc but I expect good things when #7 has the ball in his hands. Let’s see how this goes

It wasn't just his speed that made him a solid vet

I agree, the Texans don't really have a WR that can take the top off the defense. But, I don't think the deep ball will be heavily featured in the 2023 offense. More about getting the ball out on time and letting the receivers pick up YAC.

I agree and think the priority this offseason was getting WRs who are solid route runners that can get open quickly and create YAC.

If they wanted someone to take the top off the defense then they could have drafted Hyatt. But they took the versatile weapon that can run a more complicated route tree instead.

Another thing to take into consideration with Mahomes is the Chiefs were looking for their 3rd playoff berth in 3 years & starting a rookie QB might have rocked the boat. He started the last game of the season after the Chiefs had secured a playoff spot probably more to rest Alex Smith & the starters than to play Mahomes.

IMO as long as the OL can protect him the Texans have nothing to lose & everything to gain by giving Stroud as much playing time as possible this year.

Does that mean all rookie QB should follow that blueprint?
Yes, if they can. Sure some can start day 1 but standing next to OC or QB coach watching, learning and asking questions is best. In our case, Stroud could also hear the roar from stands calling his name to replace whomever is starting. Boost his ego...

If
Or they plan on scheming the deep ball. If they're going to spread the defense out horizontally, there will be plenty of space for even two safeties to cover.
If Texans go with 3 WRs + TE as I've read they will, should be some opportunities for JC as you say.

If you're a top 2 pick in the National. Football. League. and still need an ego boost, I'm not sure that's a good thing.

Look, whether a QB sits/starts depends as much on the situation the team is in as anything. Sure, if CJ looks overmatched and struggles hard in PS, he might need some clipboard time to start. Mahommes sat because KC wasn't in desperation mode at the position, and they did win their division with Smith under center. Rodgers sat 3 years behind Favre. But there's just as many examples of QBs starting from day 1 and turning out just fine.

The Texans don't have a QB in front of CJ who's going to lead them anywhere, so if he looks halfway competent during camp and PS, he should be starting day 1. Not saying the Texans are ready to go anywhere or that CJ is would be leading them there this year, but IMO and in this situation, getting the game speed down, getting the experience and rookie mistakes out of the way and learning the game now could be off the charts valuable next year when they might be ready to go somewhere. Probably a lot to do with coaching but Trevor Lawrence's rookie and sophomore seasons were night and day, and he started from day 1.

I can see the value in this. But, if we have to "simplify" I think we're holding the team back, for one guy & the focus becomes developing a QB & not developing a team.

I am saying "if" not that we will.

whoever grasps the offense & understands nfl defenses best should start. Like you said, it's not about leading anyone anywhere. Im saying it's about developing the team.

Probably a lot to do with coaching but Trevor Lawrence's rookie and sophomore seasons were night and day, and he started from day 1.

True enough. I'm not advocating one way or another. I just want to do the most we can to help our team be the best it could be, long term.

I do not want to be that team that takes a good prospect & totally ruin him. The prospect has some culpability, but I truly believe bad teams making poor decisions ruin more QBs than help.

If you're drafted 1-2 you are expected to start game 1. Tell me the last QB that was drafted 1-1 or 1-2 that didn't start right away. If they were looking for a project they should have drafted Richardson. No excuses.

Regardless of whether he starts week 1 or week 10 you're going to have to dumb it down for him. Kubiaks version of the WCO will help with this. Might as well get the CJ show on the road. What I find hilarious is some of the same posters that think Mills is hot garbage now want him to start week 1.

After seeing the schedule, if I was in charge, CJ would be on the bench game 1 while taking mental reps. Baltimore is a pretty hostile place and that D is good.

So, it’s mental that day. Stand there with an ear Pierce getting all the calls, then map it in in his mind. What would I do with this play call vs. this D alignment. See what Case/ Davis does. Is it the same? Different? What was the result? Ask questions of Bobby in real time etc. if he passes the mental tests, and seems to have it under control, start him game 2 at home in a better environment.

My approach is more valuable then getting thrown into the deep end of the pool and saying sink or swim. If he gets in over his head in Baltimore, it could impact his confidence and the teams confidence in him. Much better to wait for the friendly confines, give him a week of mental reps, then roll him out and keep it simple to start and add more to his plate as the season progresses.

That’s my plan. Of corse there are only 3 guys that matter, and they aren’t asking me!

No qb in the history of football got a full playbook in the 1st season, much less 1st start. None! So how was all the other qbs any different than CJ?

Understand this sentiment, but I think it is more an outcome of a QB driven league these days with all the rules favoring the offense, and the rush to be competitive before the 5th year option, as opposed to the notion that QB's are inherently more ready to start Day 1 as a rookie than they were in the past.

You get the exception in someone like Mahommes that was drafted by a team that was already good with an offensive mastermind in place, but the norm is generally going to be a bad team with more than likely a new coach, setting the stage for some bad decisions - and performances - in the name of turning things around quickly.

I personally expect CJ to struggle at the beginning of the season as one would expect of a rookie on a team coming off of a three-win season. What I do not expect is CJ to still be struggling at the end of the season. I'll hold off getting out my pitchfork, lighting my torch and joining the mob storming the castle until then.

I'm going to reserve my "if Cj is struggling at the end of the season" opinion until I see what these coaches actually do

Like most of us I was not happy with Mills at the end of the season, but I blame the coaches & the front office drama more than Mills. & my opinion of Mills isn't much different than what it was at the end of his rookie season.

Same with CJ, if firing a guy who should have been fired three years ago has the #1 WR in tears & the offensive coordinator refuses to use motions. HB screens, moving pockets & all those other things normally employed to help a young QB... I'll turn in an "incomplete" evaluation

Agree with all you state and i expect Stroud to start even if draft lower. Hope is on combination of things that on paper having improved.

OMG!!!

This board never fails to amuse me.

I've never seen so many excuses made for a top 5 pick before he even steps on the field. As others have alluded to, top 5 players are generally considered plug & play players. The only way Stroud doesn't start, is if he struggles badly & Mills steps up his game to take the position away from him.

Many of you demanding they take a QB with #2, are now implying that Stroud is too stupid to learn a new offensive system. The kid has played football his entire life & has most likely played in multiple systems over the years. He'll be just fine as long as the O'Line keeps the pressure off of him for the most part.

I was a fan of passing on a QB this year & building the trenches, but now that we have Stroud, I'm excited to see what he can do. Will he make some mistakes along the way? Maybe. But, he won't get better if he doesn't play. As for his confidence, players like him don't lead major college programs without having a huge amount of confidence.

So, quit making excuses & start getting excited. lol

I didn't want to draft a QB with our 1st round picks.

I don't think this team is ready to start a rookie QB, I think it will be detrimental to his development.

I have no doubt CJ Stroud will start game 1. I'm hoping for the best.
I agree with you. I was hoping the O'Line would have a year to jell together before we drafted a new QB & that Mills would have one year with an upgraded line & a sane coaching staff. But, that's not the case & we have to hope for the best. I was glad to see them take two centers in the draft that are capable of playing guard as well. With the addition of Mason & the fully healed Green with a year of experience, I feel really good about the line coming together rather quickly. Then, you add a quality RB in Singletary, a quality TE in Schultz & several intriguing WR's, not to mention a seriously upgraded defense, I can't help but get excited.

I could argue with your all time list, to start with. But taking those QBs into account, Brady was not drafted to be a starter, and only became one because of injury. Mahomes had a very solid QB in front of him. Rodgers had a HOFer in front of him. All pretty unique situations. I think sitting behind good QBs helped these guys. But Peyton Manning didn't need to sit. Dan Marino did sit for a few games, but didn't need to. Joe Burrow played from the start. It's all situational. There's no secret recipe that has to be followed.
Probably a fair bit of survivorship bias in the data also, because the ones that didn’t work out are a lot harder to break down the why than simply saying Mahomes sat and was fine but Manning started and was fine.

The key thing is, if he sits game 1, they have 2 replacement level QBs with extensive NFL experience to hold the torch while CJ readies himself and the sky will not be falling.

That said I do expect him to start game 1. And I expect him to look better than rookie Trevor Lawrence did when he does. (That said, I’ve never seen a QB look so poised while playing so badly as Trevor Lawrence did his rookie season, like if you ignored where the ball went after it left his hand he looked great, I just thought I’d get hammered if I posted it).

You have to understand who you're replying to and the player you're referring to. It's never going to be rational when you put that puzzle together
