All encompassing 2023 Draft thoughts thread.

Easy for the media to make statements like this…..their arses aren’t on the line for knee-jerking a QB at 2 (everyone is demanding the Texans take a QB) because “if” they’re not sold on “the suggested” top 4 QB’s…..it’ll be the GM taking the fall and the same media heads asking why he selected that QB at 2.

I’m still feeling strong that Ryans likes Anderson better than any of the QB’s that’ll be on the board after the Panthers take Young.

He's basically admitting that the reported low test score is accurate
Exactly. I can't fathom why he would do that. It will do nothing but hurt him. It's like he doesn't even have good enough sense to not comment on it.

No doubt, but what does the owner say?

In all honesty….I believe the McNair’s stay out of this #2 pick b/c their track record in selecting QB’s isn’t exactly sterling. This pick will be a Caserio/Ryans pick with the McNair’s blessing. If the McNair’s are the one’s making the decision…..you can put money on the fact they wouldn’t be picking CJ Stroud.

Another way to look at it as some have already alluded to is that DeMeco gets the first pick and if that is not a QB, then Nick Caserio works some draft magic to get one the next.
The beauty of having two firsts.

I think the opposite is true. DeMeco likes Stroud, while either Cal or Nick don't.

DeMeco didn't come here to get saddled with garbage QBs, I imagine he was promised Young or Stroud.

So back in January the Texans had to promise Ryans that either Stroud or Young would be his first selection?

They 100% promised him a top QB certainly, Young and Stroud were 1-2. I don't see a highly sought after coach going to a team with the worst starting QB in football

I believe this is exactly the case. I think Stroud is the best overall QB option in this draft, but he is not the right pick for this franchise. But I really hate him going to the Colts.

I hope he goes to the Colts. I welcome it.We got Stingley and if we can just save him for those Texans-Colts games then CJ doesn’t stand a chance!

Cal signed off on Stroud. He did exactly what his daddy did when Carr was the pick. Gotta get those butts back in the seats. Hopefully it works out better this time.

As draftniks, losing the draft picks is disappointing, but in the end it's about making the team better.
With WA on the field, he should command double teams so that right away will bring more opportunity to the DLine.
I expect him to get even better under DR's coaching and perhaps he can turn into one of the leagues premier disruptors.
I think we will all be watching him.

The team is starving for difference makers. The Texans made sure they got a big one in the best player in the draft.

In retrospect, the draft could've gone this way without losing draft capital in the process:

1-002: LB- Will Anderson (Alabama) / Went 1-003 > Texans
1-012: DE- Lukas Van Ness (Iowa) / Went 1-013 > Packers

2-033: QB- Hendon Hooker (Tennessee) / Went ????

It should be about the long haul. Unfortunately Cal/Caserio/Ryans took the short term butts in the seats approach. Hopefully the McNair's greed can be overcome. Nailing the draft this evening would be a good start. The haul for Stroud's perverted idol was certainly underwhelming. IMHO

They've been rebuilding for almost 3 years now. At some point, teams have to actually, you know, improve. Why would Cal/Caserio/Ryans want to keep tanking? Why would DeMeco take a job where he was required to tank?

I dont have a problem with them swinging for the fences even l though I doubt there will be championship. Finally a bold move made for the 1st time in franchise history. Maybe things really are changing down on Kirby. Since the trade the Pervert haul is done, they really need to hit on the picks tonight to build the future foundation for the franchise. At this point they need to add talent i woulduld look at fixing the center position because it's a need and a strength of the draft. Trading 3-66/4-105/ A 2024 th for a Schmitz at 2-50. He's a 10 yr starter and would solidify the OL yrs to come.

No they really haven't, the 1st yr was full on janitorial services, cleaning up the mess left behind. The 2nd yr they had picks but no cap space. This yr they had both for the 1st time in 3 yrs. Next yr they will have a standard level of picks due to trading for Anderson (Which I liked) and the most cap space in the NFL. If Stroud is what we hope he is, then the future should be bright. Personally I'm looking forward to giving Stroud the Mills treatment he got around these parts.

If Texans can hit it out of the park with a quality Center, that could be the final piece to solidify this line and make it our strength.
Would auger well for our QB.

HOUSTON — The shock waves came from Houston on Thursday night.

Who would have thought the Houston Texans would walk away from the opening night of the NFL draft as the team that stole the show?

No one?

Exactly.

General manager Nick Caserio made the two most impactful consecutive picks in franchise history, right up there with the 2006 haul that brought top overall pick Mario Williams and an athletic Alabama linebacker by the name of DeMeco Ryans.

Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud and Alabama edge rusher Will Anderson are potential game changers, and what else could one ask for on a rebuilding team’s wish list? It was audaciously delicious, right up there with Mom’s peach cobbler.

Surprisingly we got a little positive pub somewhere outside of Houston for last nights round one picks.
There was a lot of negative knit picking stuff about CJ and some obscure test and then all the talk of him having Watson's agent is also basically irrelevant.
Bottom line is the consensus is he's the best passer in this Draft and last time I checked the NFL is all about the forward pass in this 21st century.
Now what it cost us to move up to take Anderson will require a more comprehensive analysis sometime later.

What was your solution for QB in 2023? I know you wanted to take a QB in 2024, but what was the plan in the mean time?

Okay guys - I think this is clever.
Let's say Texans QB is sitting at #2. Do not take him there.
Here's why.
You take Anderson at #2 and then immediately trade up from #12 with Arizona and then take your QB guy.
Think about it - you get Anderson and your QB.
Sure, it might cost you an extra protected first from next year, but why not?
Shameless self promotion here - right idea, wrong way around. Check the date stamp on the quoted post.

Do Texans now take a flyer on WR boom or bust prospect Kayshon Boutte?
There are a dozen or more tier 2 receivers on the board but one stands out - but he has head issues.
Is he worth a risk?

I wanted a QB That already knows how to call plays in the huddle & adjust the plays at the line. Especially if we're moving to a Kubiak like offense where the QB calls the protection. I want a guy who has seen NFL defenses & has reacted to them already.

The main reason I want this is because we have a new OC who has never installed an NFL offense, never schemed an NFL offense, never called an NFL offense. I'm expecting a lot of mistakes to be made, & a rookie QB is a source of even more errors.

I'm also a firm believer the more your rookie QB has to overcome, the more he is likely to adopt bad habits.

I really hope we get one of these three tonite:-
Zacch Pickens DL Big guy up front with pass rush value.
Derick Hall ED - another pass rush specialist.
Nate Herbig LB - not sure if he's a Will or Sam, but he is a surprisingly good pass rusher.
We picked up Anderson, now let's get him another young buddy to grow with.
Harris should have a nice sophomore season so with this injection of talent, our defense should be transformed under DR.

I just want them to get someone so that we don't have to see Kirksey anymore

I still haven't forgotten about Michael Mayer.
You want the next Jason Witten? Here he is.
Schultz may be gone next season so Mayer can have a year of NFL experience with CJ.
Do-it-all Mayer runs routes like a polished WR and is known as a solid blocker.
